  • 12 Places it’s never been illegal to be gay

Despite homosexuality being outlawed by most countries at some point in history, there are eleven countries and nations in which it has never been against the law to have sex with someone of the same sex.

12 Places it's never been illegal to be gay
12 Places it’s never been illegal to be gay

Many countries have never outlawed female same-sex relationships, however, male on male sexual activity has been outlawed in many country and territories throughout history.

This is a list of countries where it has never been illegal to be a gay male. This list is not an endorsement of LGBT+ rights in each of these territories, rather that, the governments of each country has never outlawed sex between two men.

    Cambodia

LGBT citizens of Cambodia may live without discrimination protections or same-sex marriage, but it has never been illegal to be gay and the age of consent is equalised with heterosexuals.

    Côte D’Ivorie

In private sexual relationships between consenting adults has always been legal in this African nation, which is highly unusual for an African country as the majority of nations on this continent have outlawed sex between two men.

    French Polynesia

There have never been laws against homosexuality in French Polynesia, it has brilliant protections for LGBT people which are in line with France’s legal system.

    Laos

There are no specific protections against discrimination for LGBTs but it has never been illegal to be gay.

    Macau

In Macau homosexuality was never classed a crime per se, however anal sex with someone under the age of 17 is classed as a crime and an offence that carries a 10-year prison sentence.

    Poland

Poland is one of the few countries where homosexuality has never been considered a crime. Homosexuality was made illegal when Poland lost its independence in 1795 where the sodomy laws of  Russia, Prussia, and Austria came into force in the occupied Polish lands. They were finally abandoned in 1932.

  • Five totally gay things to do this Pride weekend

So if you’re going to Pride In London this weekend here’s five other things you should totally check out

Five totally gay things to do this Pride weekend

Pride in London isn’t just about the massive parade that’s taking place in the centre of London (although that is a hugggge part of it) there are hundreds of other activities to get involved with.

    1) Saucy Soho Tours

Up until the 8th of July, you can embark on a tour of Soho and discover why it became the home of LGBT+ life. The tour lasts one hour and 15 minutes and costs £16.25. If you can get tickets pop over to Tate Britain and take a look at the incredible Queer British Art 1861-1967 Exhibition.

    2) Gay Theatre

If you’ve got the time you might want to stop by London’s only LGBT theatre, Above The Stag. The theatre runs a programme of gay content throughout the year. During pride season, ATS is showing He Shoots He Scores. Tickets are available from £20.

    3) Moonlight Screening

Watch 2017’s Best Picture, Moonlight. The Prince Charles Cinema is showing a screen of Moonlight, presented by Unicorn Nights.

    4) The Scene

During pride, you have to get yourself to the scene. Now, a word to the wise, Old Compton Street becomes very, very busy – don’t expect too much room to swing a cat (so leave him at home). To find your closest LGBT venue, download our free bar finder app.

    5) UK Black Pride

Pride in the park takes place in the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens on the Sunday after the Parade. Pride in the Park is a community-style event with all kinds of entertainment. There’ll be a cake baking competition, sports events, dog show, music, spoken word and food and drink. All in a relaxed atmosphere that everyone is welcome to be a part of.

  • Drag Race Allstars 3, who could they be?

Series 9 has now ended and I feel a hole in my gayness that needs filling (I genuinely didn’t intend to put a pun there, but I spotted it and decided to leave it in). Oh, the puns!

    It is widely expected that All Stars 3 is coming (not soon enough!) and fans are already talking about who could return. We already know that Willem is out (she said so herself via a post on Tumblr which was subsequently removed, oh the intrigue) so who do you want to see in the new all-stars? Here is my ideal lineup;

    BenDeLaCreme (Season 6)

I liked Ms de le Creme, especially her Maggie Smith. She slayed the runway on a number of occasions and I think she would put up a good fight.

Adore Delano (Season 6 & All Stars 2)

Now I wasn’t sure about this one as I didn’t agree with her decision to leave AS2. I could also see that she majorly went wrong in life. So I’m torn. I’d love the old Adore back, a little older a little more experienced I reckon she could easily get through to the final again.

    Courtney Act (Season 6)

Simply because I like nice boys to look at.

    Laganja Estranja  (Season 6)

RuPaul’s drag race wouldn’t be the same without a shady queen to spice things up a little. And with this mix, it would get nice n spicy.

Bianca Del Rio (Season 6 Winner)

I’d bet money on her to win again. But these girls would give her a run for her money.

    Sharon Needles (Season 4 Winner)

A little bit of the extraordinary is always a good thing.

Latrice Royale (Season 4 / All Stars 1)

This lady is my spiritual mother. The shade, the alcoholic pink lemonade and all that sass baby.

    Morgan McMichaels (Season 2)

Another pretty one, and hopefully this time round she has some more tricks up her sleeve (if not it’ll just be fun to watch).

Bebe Zahara Benet (Season 1 Winner)

The first ever winner, remember her? She mastered it with low budget challenges and even worse prizes. I say give her a crack at some Series 9 level realness.

    Trixie Mattel (Season 7)

Again the viewing value is worth its weight in pink lemonade. I doubt she would get through to the final but it would be one hell of a show.

Chi Chi De Vayne (Season 8)

She came 4th, that’s some serious ability (and I think she’s a dark horse, so it’ll make for good telly!).

    Kennedy Davenport (Season 7)

Another girl that came 4th just missing the final post. She had some killer looks for the runway and again, she’d give the girls a run for their money.

    Milk (Season 6)

I threw Milk into the mix because, well, I’m a little drunk. I wanted someone that didn’t do that well on their season (her Julia Child was just awful in Snatch Game) and that, given some time and gin, could come back and not fcuk it up.

What do you think? Is that lineup shady enough do we think? Who would you like to see in the next All Stars series?

There is currently no fixed date for an announcement on All Stars 3 we can likely expect something soon. A life without RuPaul’s Drag Race in it is a very bland one indeed. Watch this space!

  • 5 things you need to try if you’re going to have a one night stand

When it comes to the traditional one night stand, or having sex with strangers, none of the honesty or rules of chivalry apply! In fact, you probably stand a better chance of pulling, if you employ full use of your carefree attitude. So guys, when you’re getting ready to go out tonight, make sure the last thing you put on, is your shagger swagger!

tips for a one night stand

The beauty of having sex with a stranger is that it can be completely anonymous, and string free. The best part of a relationship, with the added bonus, that it only lasts one night! For those of you that have never slept with a stranger, are you starting to see the appeal yet?

    NOM DU PLUME

My advice is to completely invent yourself a pseudonym, build up a whole alter ego, do whatever you like, be whoever you like and do it with whoever you want to do it with! You have to make sure though, that when you’re building up your night-time image, that you have to remember your story! Stick to the lies, you’ll thank me in the morning – never let your secret slip!

    TRY SOMETHING COMPLETELY NEW

Experiment, it’s always fun to try new things! If one nighters aren’t your thing, then honey, pick up your Bible and tighten up your chastity belt, 2017 isn’t the year for you! If you’re thinking of trying it out, then do it – don’t think too much, you might change your mind! If you’re a more seasoned bed hopper though, why not embrace your adventurous side – my motto – if it’s comfortable and slow – you just aren’t doing it right!

    KEEP THE DEETS SECRET

In my experience, it’s for the best that you Never Swap Numbers, once you do, you run the risk of (a) if you rocked his world, gaining a stalker (b) having to admit you lied and (c) making awkward conversation because you’re too nice to tell him to leave you alone! If you don’t feel comfortable saying no to giving him your number, and can’t make one up off the top of your head – take his, tell him your phone is dead and discard on the way home!

    DON’T BE A COMPLETE DRUNK

When sleeping with strangers, it’s a good idea to make sure you watch your level of Intoxication, you don’t want to be so drunk you end up waking up face down in a ditch, with your trousers around your ankles, and all of your possessions gone with the stars! I am going to say though you don’t want to be sober either; you just won’t enjoy yourself if you are! Get yourself to that merry state, and voilà, you’re in for a night filled with filth.

    WRAP IT UP

And, as ever, we at THEGAYUK always promote Safer Sex, you can never be too careful! We know that in the heat of the moment, taking the time to roll down your condom is possibly the last thing on your list, but you have to be responsible!

I hope you enjoy your night, have fun, go wild but most importantly, think P.E.N.I.S. – Pseudonym, Experiment, Never Swap Numbers, Intoxication and Safer Sex.

As I always say, don’t be a fool – wrap that tool! If you need any advice, or for more information on sexual health visit: http://www.gmfa.org.uk/sex/ better to be safe, than sorry!

  • These tips will help you sleep through the heatwave

These tips will help you sleep through the heatwave

Officially the UK is in meltdown – and let’s face it we’re not coping very well.

    Bru-nO / Pixabay

They’ll talk about it always, the summer of 2017 – well that is until the next freak weatherwave happens… Anyone looking forward to this winter’s Snowmageddon?

Are you having trouble sleeping during the heatwave? Well, Max Wiseberg of HayMax has come up with these five tips to help you drift off to a restful sleep regardless of the heat outside and the pollen count.

Max comments, “Staying cool is the key to a good night’s sleep and if you’re a hay fever sufferer like me, avoiding the pollen too.

    And freeze

Try putting your pillowcase in the fridge so that it’s cool! Some people swear by chilling all of their sheets, but that sounds extreme…

    Get wet

Shower before bed. A cool shower will help to cool you down from a day in the sun. And it will help to remove pollen from your hair and body.

    Jug it

Keep a jug of cool water next to the bed.

    Breezy does it

Opening a window at the front and back of the house can provide a cooling breeze. Be sure not to do this until late evening though, because early evening brings high pollen counts as the atmosphere begins to cool and pollen settles back down to the ground.

    The nose have it…

Apply an organic, drug-free allergen barrier balm, such as HayMax, to the nostrils and around the bones of the eyes before you go to bed, to block pollen before it enters the body. HayMax has been proven to trap over one-third of pollen grains before they enter the body.”

  • 10 signs of depression you should look out for

Depression and mental health have been hot topic subjects of late and sometimes spotting the signs can be difficult.

We spoke to psychotherapist Andrew Smith clinical director of TherAppUK Ltd who gave us 10 pointers to look out for.

    1. Social Withdrawal.

This is when someone may become more withdrawn from social activities, and not be as interested in going out and socialising. However, more importantly, they may not be doing anything else as an alternative. Give them an invite to something and mean it. As a therapist, we often use the boundary of a session to gently challenge clients who would wish to withdraw.

    2. Being Less communicative.

Has the talking stopped? Keep the conversation going. It can really help if the person opposite really feels like you care about what they are saying.

Most people who are struggling with difficult feelings and experiences often lose an ability to engage in dialogue with their loved ones. This happens over time and is a gradual response to depressive feelings. Keep talking, even if it feels like drivel, and really listen to what people are saying. It is very difficult to push away someone who is genuinely interested in you.

    3. Isolation.

This is the effect, not always the cause. Pop around to see them, offer to help out, and persevere. Often, the message that someone is not going away, no matter how hard they are going to be pushed, is so important. Therapy is a further way of helping this, in a far less pressured way.

    4. Health.

As we descend into the spiral of depression and anxiety, we often lose sight of how taking care of ourselves (better things to worry about), and gradually this can lead to poorer choices in food, sexual health, financial matters, and exercise. Ironically, good choices in all of these can help immensely in our recovery. So ‘encourage’ someone to take up a new activity with you (yoga can be amazing), try a meditation class, and cook some healthy food together.

  • 10 Things You Know If You’re An LGBTQ+ From The ’10s

    Aah, the ’10s.

Ofsted Adds Homophobic Bullying into Inspections

This seemingly small act in 2012 ensured that schools took a stand against homophobia. A 2014 Stonewall teachers’ report found that “the proportion of teachers who say their school has a policy that explicitly addresses homophobic bullying has increased significantly: in primary schools from 19 percent in 2009 to 31 percent in 2014, in secondary schools from 30 percent in 2009 to 55 percent in 2014.” However, the report also states that most teachers believe there’s a lack of leadership standing to tackle homophobic bully and fewer than 1/5 teachers say their schools’ library has LGBTQ+ information books. Only 8% of primary school teachers and 16% of secondary school teachers say they’ve had specific training to deal with homophobic bullying, so while the 2012 act added homophobic bullying to Ofsted reports there’s a long way to go from there. But it’s a clear sign that times are changing to include LGBTQ+ students in governing reports and not just acknowledge the potential danger they may face but actually do something to change it.

The Marriage Act (For Same-Sex Couples)

Just one year later, this act was passed in England & Wales in 2013 and two years later in June in 2015 in the USA. Civil Partnerships were granted in 2004 giving essentially the same rights and responsibilities as heterosexual married couples – but why go above and beyond to instil and enforce the difference of same-sex relationships in a whole new act? Well, now gay couples can have the same legal standing of marriage as straight couples thanks to Maria Miller, the Chair of the Women and Equalities Select Committee who introduced the act. The first same-sex marriages in the UK took place on the 29th of March in 2014. Love wins!

    Ellen Page Coming Out

Her speech in 2014 for the Human Rights Campaign was groundbreaking. It made global headlines and many praised Page for her bravery and honesty. Ellen Degeneres, Neil Patrick Harris, Adam Lambert and Ricky Martin paved the way for celebrities like Page to come out but Page’s speech covered the crushing standards of beauty the industry puts on everyone – not just young people – and how the ideology of being a certain way forces you to act a certain way. She discussed the bullying, the secrecy, the boxed-in claustrophobic feeling of being in the closet out of the toxic fear of being outed. She chastised the narrow views of femininity and masculinity and how they serve no purpose in contemporary society. She made you think and feel and cheer and cry and it was (and continues to be) one of the most empowering speeches for LGBTQ+ youth who feel oppressed by the norms and values of society. I will never forget how she talked so openly and honestly without painting everything black and white. But if you take just one thing away from her speech, let it be that you can make a difference by loving yourself. Because that’s where you start loving other people and that’s how you save lives. Not by being horrible to other people but by loving each other.

    Caitlyn Jenner’s Public Transition

Love her or hate her, there’s no denying that the media’s attention was laser-focused on Cait after she came out as a transgender woman in April 2015. She’s not the best advocate for the LGBTQ+ community but the truth is she helped bring the limelight to transgender rights and the discrimination the marginalised group suffer daily. Many people didn’t even know what being transgender meant before Cait. Bruce Jenner, the Olympic gold medallist, showed the world anybody can feel like they don’t belong. Of course, let’s also not forget the important work of Laverne Cox, the Wachowskis and Aydian Dowling.

    The Explosion of Dating Apps

A plethora of never-ending headless torsos at your beck and scroll. With such an endless selection of gay apps – from Grindr, BoyAhoy, SCRUFF, Adam4Adam, GuySpy, Hornet, Jack’d to GROWLr – there’s a noticeable lack of lesbian-centric dating apps. HER is essentially the only one tailored specifically for queer women. You could always just select a women-only feature on Tinder, Bumble, OKCupid, etc. but why is there such a large dating market for queer men and not for queer women?

Ginger Minj Losing RuPaul’s Drag Race to Violet Chachki

Violet is a great queen (don’t come for me Violet stans) but Ginger, regardless of how many times she was in the bottom two compared to Violet’s safe streak, was undeniably the standout star of the season. To this day it irks me that the skinny queen with the snatched waist won over the most multi-talented comedy queen in RuPaul history. It seemed like Violet’s “redemption” arc was shoehorned in the last 3 episodes as a set-up to make her likeable. Ginger was consistently funny, heart-warming and bled her larger than life personality into every performance. I just think America’s Next Drag Superstar should be more than just a pretty face with a good aesthetic. Sue me.

    Stonewall Film

Controversy controversy controversy. Definitely a lower point in the LGBTQ+ community. The white-washing and white saviour narrative depicted in the film, although tiresome and ignorant of real-life history, actually highlighted one of the biggest problems in our community: the glorification of white gay males. Now, Stonewall could have significantly played upon this trope in a satirical social commentary and made a point of casting mainly white, attractive males – even if it is a stretch to suppose the potential of a film that ignores a large portion of its real life history. Instead of addressing these issues, whatsoever, producer and director Roland Emmerich responded to the commentary saying, “I didn’t make this movie only for gay people, I made it also for straight people… As a director, you have to put yourself in your movies, and I’m white and gay.” There’s no logical response to the oblivious ignorance of this comment, but he didn’t stop there. He went on to claim the gargantuan failure of the box office on “one voice on the internet who saw a trailer and said, this is whitewashing Stonewall. Stonewall was a white event, let’s be honest. But nobody wanted to hear that any more.” Despite whatever twisted ethnocentric version of history Emmerich believes happened, people of colour, drag queens and lesbians (surprise, surprise, the film features one poorly portrayed openly lesbian character) all participated and played a huge role in the pivotal Stonewall Riots, don’t let this flop of a film tell you otherwise.

    The Pulse Massacre

49 people were killed and 53 were injured in the Orlando nightclub shooting, one of the biggest mass shootings in American history. I guess it shouldn’t be this surprising that horrible, horrible occurrences like this still happen. We often take for granted how far the LGBTQ+ movement has come and all the sacrifices made to give us the (somewhat limited) freedom we have today. But it’s events like these that bring us closer together, in grief and in loss we remember and we reflect and we never let our voices go unheard. For the 49 people killed, for the 53 people injured, we must continue being unapologetically ourselves and demand the treatment every human being deserves – labels and categories and boxes be damned. In Trump’s America we can’t let anything divide us and we can never, ever forget.

David Bowie, George Michael, Prince, Pete Burns, Alexis Arquette and Carrie Fisher

All great LGBTQ+ icons. All taken too soon in the same year. There’s not much else to say but to remember their lives and their accomplishments with nothing but love in our hearts for each time they stood up for us.

Moonlight first LGBT film to win Best Picture at the Oscars

2015 may have flopped with Stonewall, but 2016 made up for it with Moonlight. Not only was it the first LGBT film to feature an all-black cast, it explored sexual identity and masculinity within the African-American community with a poignancy deserving of all its won awards. Critics and fans alike love it, which hopefully tells big execs what representation and what untold stories the worldwide audience is hungry for. Let’s continue to move forward, not backwards, and fill cinemas and awards lists with sensationally progressive films like Moonlight.

  • 10 Things Gay Men Hate On The Gay Scene

10 Things Gay Men Hate On The Gay Scene

The scene… hold on I hear you say? Why do I hate the scene? It’s the place to be, to socialise and meet other like-minded individuals! But as you shall see my friends, The Scene is fraught with obstacles and dangers that lurk in the dark underbelly of that glitter infused world

10 things gay guys hate on the gay scene

    1. The Shade, The shade of it all…

This one would probably be the most obvious of things to dislike about the gay scene. The natural bitchiness that seems to infest the community. Whether it’s simply snide comments, or outright nastiness, there is a constant feeling of being judged by your taste in music, or who you are, if you don’t subscribe to the idea of perceived gay perfection.

    2. It costs a lot of money to look this cheap…

Recently there is a fashion to go towards having the most up to date underwear, the most on fleek eyebrows and enough makeup on your face to smother a cow. I’m first to admit I’ll happily slap a thin layer of foundation and powder on in order to have a more even skin tone, but taking out shares in Boots makeup counter is not something I really feel the need to do. Plus hotels probably charge for leaving that amount of fake tan on the pillows.

    3. You can’t sit with us…

Unless you’re 18, with perfectly styled hair and weigh enough to make a Twiglet look morbidly obese, you’re painfully looked down upon. God forbid you should be over 30 with a receding hairline and carrying a few extra pounds and still want to go out and have a dance and a drink. Cliques are frustrating if you simply don’t fit into one. Yet trying to find a group of people you do fit in with, can usually result in meeting people who probably strangled small animals as a child.

    4. Jimi Hendrix deceased, drugs. Janis Joplin deceased, alcohol. Mama Cass deceased, ham sandwich…

Most club DJ’s seem to forget any music existed between 2000 and 6 months ago and before 1990 and unless you ask for it, the brilliant music from the past is completely passed over for the mind-numbing tunes that you’re not entirely sure where one ends and the next begins because of the same beat traversing through the tracks. Not every gay person enjoys the same music, and even the most dedicated of club goers can get bored by the same tracks being played week in week out

    5. Nissed as a pewt…

With the way most jobs are these days, shift work causes a natural tendency to go out and get absolutely wrecked on alcohol. I don’t just mean louder and not caring how you look on the dance floor drunk, I’m talking as drunk as possible before passing out. And this can lead to many unfortunate accidents and waking up next to the creature from the black lagoon. Find your limit of where you’re still an acceptable human being to be around and bloody stick it.

    6. We’ve got one night only…

Let’s face it, the gay club scene is usually not where you’re going to find the love of your life. But most people seem to expect it and this leads to disappointment that Prince Charming didn’t come in on a white horse and sing at you. But it is disheartening when the most you can usually expect is a fumble behind a skip

    7. Calm down Beyonce…

We’ve all seen them, and we’ve all been on the receiving end of them. The diva queens who insist they are the dog’s proverbials. Strutting around like the world owes them something, pushing in at the bar because they think they should be served first, but as soon as you call them out on it, it’s like you’ve somehow insulted THEM and aren’t bowing down to their sense of entitlement.

    8. No, no, you said it. It’s out in the open. We have to live with it now…

The girl that guy is trying to get with goes to a club with her best gay friends, he tags along, and then acts surprised by the fact he’s in a gay club. Then the questions start… the endless questions and the protestations of: “no I’m fine with gay guys, just don’t come on to me”

Consider it flattery, just say you’re straight and move on. Don’t act offended, you’re in a flipping gay club with men who are attracted to men.

    9. A dog’s not just for life, it’s for Christmas…

The girls who are on the lookout for a new “pet gay” Their old one has moved on, or got into a relationship and these girls are on the shop. While it’s always nice to make new friends, we certainly aren’t looking for someone who only wants a gay friend as some kind of fashion accessory and to boast to their lady friends. We also shouldn’t be used by these female strangers as a way for them to call judgement on and or pull the tall guy we fancy ourselves, and no I won’t come shopping with you tomorrow.

    10. My god, it’ll be beautiful…

When your local club announces it’s going to have a “refurbishment” and closes down sections for weeks with endless announcements of the re-opening with all the special promotions that go with it. You gussy yourself up, get all your friends out. Have a few pre-drinks, because those club drinks don’t come cheap. You queue outside anxiously waiting for this little slice of gay heaven to open it’s doors. You go in with sparkles and rainbows in your eyes to be greeted with a new mirror ball, a smoke machine that fails after an hour and the walls being painted blue. Oh the humanity!

  • 4 Gay Things NOT To Do In Hamburg

4 Gay Things NOT To Do In Hamburg

I’m a big fan of exploring new cities, and when you book a trip to Germany there are a few cities that pop to the forefront of your mind. You may fancy the hipster-chic of Berlin, or the traditional beer-fest that is Bavaria, and so cities like Hamburg are often overlooked.

Amidst the melee of middle-class stag dos, I stumbled onto the soggy streets of Hamburg. Striving to slightly distinguish itself from the hipster-haven that is Berlin, Hamburg has a nautical history that is evident in most of its decor. Since 80% of the city was obliterated by bombings during World War II, the millennial-style spaces inhabit less-than-ancient warehouses and dockyards.

The gay scene is different in every city in every country around the world, so don’t expect Hamburg to be just like any other German city. Here are a few things you should not expect to be able to do whilst visiting Hamburg.

    1. DON’T go day gay drinking

You can, of course, go day drinking, in fact, we would highly recommend that you do given the city’s excellent selection of beers. However, don’t expect there to be a bustling gay crowd during the day, even on the weekend. The Germans love to go drinking and they love to go partying, but unlike the Brits, they don’t start early. Bars won’t get busy until about 10 pm and the clubs won’t even tend to open until about 2 am. So while a casual day gay drink on Lange Reihe would be nice, it won’t be especially exciting.

    2. DON’T go to a sauna at night

Again, of course, you can go to one of Hamburg’s gay saunas at night, but the crowd is better during the day… I’ve been told. My sources say that the best time to hit up a gay sauna in Hamburg is Sunday afternoon when people have recovered enough from the night before. Getting in at 6 am means that it will be a few hours before many of the good gays resurface and head to the sauna to sweat out the sin from the night before.

    3. DON’T wear a towel at the sauna

Here our British modesty tends to be our downfall, but when in Rome (Hamburg), do as the Romans (Hamburgers). No one wears a towel in the sauna, whether it’s a gay sauna or the one at your hotel. And while you may not enjoy an eyeful of that old straight guy’s crotch, there’s no reason not to give him a sneaky peak of the goods while you can. You might just make his day.

    4. DON’T only stay in gay hotels

While we are proud to support the LGBT-friendly hotels that have become a staple mark of Hamburg’s gay district, you don’t need to limit yourself to the hotels in St. Georg. There are plenty of cool, trendy, friendly, hipster hotels dotted around the city that are never too far away from the gay parties. I stayed at the adorably chic 25Hours Hotel in HafenCity, which wasn’t necessarily the closest location to the gay scene, but was easily one of the coolest hotels I’ve ever stayed in.

Designed with a distinctive maritime theme, it oozed millennial and was a great place to hang out (especially when your bloody Easyjet flight isn’t until 9:45pm and your checkout time was at noon). Free wifi, portable speakers you can take around town with you, and a short ride to St. Georg on the nearby 24-hour Meßberg underground.

Plus they make THE best soy latte that I’ve ever had!

  • 10 Signs You’re Falling Out Of Love

For many, love is a fantastical thing that erupts sweaty palms, butterflies in the stomach and more than a few uncomfortable boners. But

10 signs you're falling out of love

Falling in love can be magical. Falling out of love can suck.

Here are 10 telltale signs to look out for:

Cute Habits Turn Into Annoying Pet Peeves

All those sweet enamoured things they used to do, like holding open doors for you or putting their arm around your waist when you walk, slowly but surely become mind-numbingly infuriating. The little things that used to make you swoon now make you groan. More so, you find yourself actually looking out for these little ticks that fuel your anger and frustration rather than turning a blind eye.

    You Seek Out Conflict

Picking fights used to be this grand, scary event that you’d mentally prep yourself up for beforehand. Now? Not so much. Bickering and arguing are practically the bread and butter of your relationship. The slightest of inconvenient occurrences can feel like the heaviest of set-backs. Did he forget to tell you he was seeing his friend tonight? Of course, he did, he’s so inconsiderate. Sound familiar?

    Other Couples Highlight Your Insecurities

Double dates or group hangs just remind you of what’s missing in your relationship. You can feel the palpable envy in the air when a couple who can’t keep their hands off each other begin sucking face in front of you. It’s a gut-wrenching feeling to realise the infamous spark is gone and it feels better to stick your head in the sand than have your nose rubbed in it. Chances are if you’re jealous of another couple, it’s because they have something you don’t.

A Future With Them Is Unrealistic

Planning stuff together a week in advance makes you iffy. Thinking about a long-term future plan with a picket fence and kids makes you nauseous. It’s just not realistic to daydream about backpacking together or lounging on a matching set of towels together and still have it be fun. Or even tolerable. If that much time away, with only the two of you, makes you shiver then what’s the point in being with someone?

    Saying Empty “I Love Yous”

Once more, with feeling. Three words that tingled your spine the first time you dared to whisper them into his ear. Your friends made such a big deal out of it. Truthfully, when you mumble them into the phone now it’s more out of habit or courtesy than love. They ring hollow, devoid of the fiery passion they once held. If they say it back in the same monotonous tone, odds are they’ve probably fallen out of love too.

A Relationship Just Isn’t What You Need Right Now

Perhaps other priorities have risen, be it a new career opportunity or needing to take care of a sick relative, and the sad yet honest answer is simply what’s written on the tin. A relationship isn’t your priority or necessarily even what you need. We all know how we love to think we know what’s best for ourselves. But it can be a bitter pill to swallow and admit. Maybe you rushed into things. Maybe you didn’t consider what you wanted out of the relationship. Maybe you don’t need to be in a relationship right now and that’s okay if you communicate it to your partner and not let it fester up and snowball.

You Care About Them… As A Friend

Attraction is important in a relationship. It’s not everything but it does play a pivotal role. If that attraction were to burn out, what’s supposed to be left is mutual respect and trust… right? So where do the distinct lines of friendship and relationship end? Attraction is a pretty good indicator. If you’re lucky enough to have a partner that ends up feeling like both a friend and a lover, congrats, but if it leans towards platonic (and let’s be honest, you know when it does) rather than romantic then that’s pretty self-explanatory.

    The Thought Of Breaking-Up Isn’t Heart-Breaking

A long time ago, losing your significant other would absolutely crush you. Three to four months of mourning, minimum. Ice cream and tears galore. What springs to mind when you think about it nowadays is… meh. Not only do you find yourself caring less and less if you’re with them or not, seeing them doesn’t make your heart pitter-patter anymore. It wouldn’t shatter if he left for good, either, and if that’s the gospel truth well then that’s a pretty darn good sign.

    He Doesn’t Satisfy You Anymore

There are plenty of things to do to spice up your sex life. Whole books are written on the topic. But if your relationship is suffering its very own mid-life crisis, it’s very likely that what used to be there isn’t anymore. Perhaps that’s where the jealousy of other couple stems from; sex is no longer pleasurable or as exciting or fun as it used to be. Tearing each other’s clothes off used to be common practice. If you’ve scheduled out a mandatory coitus sesh every Sunday night, and the thought of snacking afterwards is the only driving force to your climax, then it’s a pretty clear indication that the love part of your love-making is existentially dead.

    You’ve Fallen For Someone Else

The ultimate sign that you’ve fallen out of love: being in love with someone else. Of course, this last sign only applies to monogamous couples. To have someone’s undivided devotion is wondrous. What can end up stinging the most, however, is finding out the hard way that’s not the case. People don’t like hearing it but there’s no easy way around telling someone you’re in love with someone else. Coming to terms with it yourself is a good starting point.

If any of these ten signs ring true, maybe you have a few things to consider. If not, cherish your love (or your singlehood!) and let’s all agree that love is simultaneously the biggest mystery and wonder of the world.
