  • COMMENT | Is Gay Twitter just too darn cliquey?

What is it about that phrase “apply for membership” that is simultaneously repugnant and intriguing? It’s like my personality splits instantly; one-half goes “urgh” and walks away, the other is halfway through typing an application form detailing why it is I would be great for this club and frantically trying to find ‘cool’ photos to upload to Instagram.

But those clubs make money from being exclusive; “Gay Twitter™”, however, does and should not.

So why, oh why, are gays still trying to syphon themselves off from the rest of life? Why do people include an ACTUAL TRADEMARK after ‘Gay Twitter’? These are all questions I ask myself as I scroll through my Twitter feed each morning.

My issue is with some of the influential members of ‘Gay Twitter’ and the damage I feel they’re doing to what we strive to keep an open, encompassing community.

But, still, my issue isn’t with the idea of the name ‘Gay Twitter’ itself; that’s just the title for a demographic of Twitter users, really. My issue is with some of the influential members of ‘Gay Twitter’ and the damage I feel they’re doing to what we strive to keep an open, encompassing community.

Looking for inspiration, guidance and I’ll be honest some networking opportunities, I started following a few of the editors, sub-editors, contributors etc of certain successful flagship LGBT+ publications on Twitter. While I was expecting to be inspired as a wannabe-editor, I’m continually disappointed by what I can see is just one big clique. “Unfollow them!” you say? Why? I’d have nothing to write about.

I watch these intelligent, prominent writers spend all day @ing each other in tweets; usually about an in joke and/or anal sex. And when their followers try to chime in? Oh, don’t expect a response unless you’re someone they have/want to/are going to shag. Didn’t we grow out of that somewhere after GCSEs? Haven’t we gays all had enough of feeling left out of a social group when we were at school?

What upsets me the most is that some of these are the people running the publications that I looked up to when I was desperate to get out of small town life and be one of them. For example, Gay Times has a print readership of 170,000 people; 869,411 web page views and a social media following reaching into the millions*.

That’s millions of people in their sphere of influence that they’re either peacocking in front of or ignoring completely.

Now don’t get me wrong, the beauty of Twitter is that it’s an unfiltered stream of consciousness and it’s your own personal account but they cannot deny that they’re in the public eye (hello? You have a big blue tick next to your handle!) These guys are writers after all; write something that young gays will look up to! When there’s so much out there with the potential to damage young minds and yet, even more, channels for them to reach out through, how about show the next generation how to be dignified LGBT+ people by tweeting something that doesn’t involve you being a bitch? How about using your high profile for charitable good, or to highlight issues from the community? I’d love to hear a voice that isn’t just cynicism and sycophantism.

‘Gay Twitter’ needs a wakeup call: engage, inspire, broaden some knowledge – because the elitism is hurtful.

The private members’ clubs I get: being exclusive is literally their business, it’s in the title. But ‘Gay Twitter’ needs a wakeup call: engage, inspire, broaden some knowledge – because the elitism is hurtful.

While I’m at it, dear publishing Lords, give me a man topless on the cover of a gay lifestyle magazine who doesn’t have abs! But that rant is for another day when I haven’t eaten a Five Guys straight after the gym.

  • Finally suspended from Twitter, Lucian Piane is off the platform

It seems the folks at Twitter have called time on Lucian Piane’s account.

The songwriter, former producer and judge for RuPaul has had his account suspended on Twitter.

A user called Lois complain to Twitter about Lucian Piane‘s offensive and erratic Tweets. She received notification from the team on Twitter who said that Lucian’s account had violated their community guidelines.

She said, “So now I guess I’m the girl that got Lucian Piane suspended from Twitter,” she tweeted.

Lucian’s twitter account has tweeted a series of offensive messages and he apologised earlier in the year saying that he was in a “marijuana psychosis” – according to UCLA doctors. He claims he consumed 800mg of cannabis edibles in 48 hour period. He called the experience “eye-opening” and “enlighting”.

The songwriter’s tweets descended further and further into chaos. At one point he made claims about the Obamas and Clintons. He also claimed that Barack Obama was gay and his own body and nearly everyone on earth was infected with brain-controlling parasites.

He also uploaded a picture of his penis.

The messages published on his account caused much concern and many fans feared for his mental health.

His suspension follows other high profile LGBT folk, who have also been suspended including, Milo, Azealia and Tila Tequila

  • What was Donald Trump’s first ever tweet?

You can’t turn on the news anymore without a Tweet from President Donald Trump making the headlines… but where did it all begin?

President Donald Trump has sent over 35,200 tweets – many of them late at night or very early in the morning, which many commentators have said is a clever marketing tactic in order for him to have the run of the news cycle for the next 24 hours. It was a tactic which he used to great effect during his presidential campaign. It left his competition reacting to the comment or accusations, rather than having the opportunity to be proactive.

So what was Donald Trump’s first-ever Tweet – well it was sent in May 2009 – and it was self-promoting. He (or someone tweeting on his behalf) was simply letting his followers know that he was on Late Night with David Letterman.

It has had 436 Retweets and 402 likes – a far cry from the tens of thousand a tweet might achieve if sent today.

Speaking about the power of social media and more specifically, his presence on social media Trump said,

“I really believe that, um– the fact that I have such power in terms of numbers with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, et cetera, I think it helped me win all of these races where they’re spending much more money than I spent,

“You know, I spent my money. A lot of my money. And I won. I think that social media has more power than the money they spent, and I think maybe to a certain extent, I proved that.”

  • Twitter unveils new Pride icon for Pride Month 2017

Twitter has changed its Pride and #LoveIsLove heart icon from a singular rainbow to  a rainbow along with a blue and pink element.

Twitter has added a gender element to its #LoveIsLove and #Pride2017 heart icon to celebrate the start of Pride month across the world. The full rainbow icon was launched last year with the trending of the #LoveIsLove hashtag, but has now had a blue and pink element, which echoes the transgender pride flag, added to the left-hand side of the heart, which some had said has added a sense of unity for the community.

Twitter users took to the social network to show their love for the new design, with many users commenting how “cute” the new design was.

Martin Roberts targeted by homophobes on Twitter, despite not being gay

Homes Under The Hammer star Martin Roberts has been targetted by homophobes on Twitter since his appearance on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

Since his entry into the Jungle, Martin Roberts has both delighted and annoyed fans of the show with his outrageous behaviour, however, some viewers have taken to social media to homophobically abuse the presenter, despite the fact that he’s not gay.

The flamboyant star, who normally presents the BBC’s Home Under The Hammer, has been the victim of anti-gay abuse and slurs and has even had one death threat with his perceived sexuality being a feature in the Tweets written.

One user started a poll, which asked, “Who’s the biggest faggot in the @ImACelebrity jungle” and listed only Martin’s name

Martin Roberts is actually married to Kirsty Roberts. They got married in 2010 and together they have two children. They now live in Bath, Somerset with their two children. Before he went into the jungle he said that he was determined to make his two children proud of him.

However, it does seem as though Martin does have a man crush.

Before entering the jungle, Martin said that he’d most like to share his jungle experience with Eddie Izzard who he said would be a “riot” to hang around with and be the perfect campmate.

  • You won’t believe who has just offered to buy Vine

You won’t believe who has just offered to buy Vine

It’s the news that rocked many, Twitter is to shut down Vine. But there could be a lifeline.

    Vine

It was a dark day for many yesterday after it emerged that Twitter was to close down its 6-second video sharing platform Vine. Although reasons for offloading the platform have been sparse many believe that a rapid decline in user base is at the heart of the decision.

Well, a lifeline has seemingly been thrown to the popular video platform, which attracted millions of users after its release in 2013.

Pornhub has said it’s interested in buying it.

    pornhub_logo_black_1

A letter from Pornhub VP Corey Price to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey that was shared with CNET,

“We figure since Twitter has dropped (Vine) and is having significant layoffs, that you and your stakeholders could benefit from a cash infusion from the sale of Vine. Not to mention we would be saving Vine gems like ‘Damn Daniel,’ ‘Awkward Puppets’ and many more.”

Twitter has not responded to whether it will sell the platform.

It’ll be a new record if you can fap and finish in 6 seconds.

  • Twitter suspends popular gay porn news site

Twitter has suspended the account of a popular gay porn news site.

Twitter has seemingly suspended the account of St8UpGayPorn.com and has yet to reply to calls for an explanation from the website’s editor Zachary Sire.

The editor claims, via a post on the site,  that neither he or any of the people who tweet from the website’s Twitter account have violated any of Twitter’s terms of service.

Writing on the website, Sire said,

“The inexplicable suspension could’ve happened for any reason, and after nearly 48 hours, Twitter has yet to provide Str8UpGayPorn or any of the account’s 30,000 followers with an explanation as to why the account was suspended.

“Multiple inquiries and appeals have been made to Twitter to have the account un-suspended, and this should be resolved before the end of the week. Even when and if the account is un-suspended, this incident serves as a good reminder that Twitter’s so-called rules are arbitrarily enforced, and anyone can be suspended at any time, fair or not.”

The site, which reports on news from the gay porn industry, has in the past come under criticism for some of the stories and the way in which it reports on various individuals, however has a legion of fans who reacted to the news with shock.

Stephen Fry is back on Twitter after he left the social media networking site back in February over an uproar over a “bag lady” comment made about costume designer Jenny Beavan, who was collecting a Bafta, for which Fry was the host.

The backlash against Fry started almost immediately and he released a statement saying,

“So just a word to the tragic figures who think calling Jenny Bevan a bag lady was an insult. She’s a dear friend and she got it. Derrr.”

    Another tweet said,

“Will all you sanctimonious f***ers f*** the f*** off Jenny Beavan is a friend and joshing is legitimate. Christ I want to leave the planet.”

However this after it appears as though the actor is back on Twitter.

In a blog on his site, told his fans,

“After five months of life away from social media I have reactivated my Twitter account.

“From time to time you will now be able to read news of what I am up to, along with occasional redirects to causes important to me.

“I started work on a comedy series for CBS television in the US this week and I will certainly keep the @stephenfry feed up to date with information and pictures about this exciting new project as well as, perhaps, subjecting the world to a mini-blog or two on my website.

“While I won’t be burdening you all with personal observations or visiting the Direct Messages page, Twitter can still reward with its marvellous uses as a bulletin board and information exchange.

“Had anyone suggested that such a service might exist ten or fifteen years ago I would never have believed them.”
