    When We Rise first look

In February a new seven-part mini series premieres in America about the early gay rights movement.

I’ve written about the Stonewall riots before, and this new series focuses on that time period. Written by Tom Daley’s fiance, Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (who also directed two of the episodes) it is based on true stories of the brave LGBT community members who fought tooth and nail to be heard, and to be accepted. There’s also some big names involved as well, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Guy Pierce, Michael K Williams David Hyde Pierce, and Mary Louise Parker, to name just a few.

Dustin Lance Black has always been a strong vocal advocate for the gay rights movement, and it appears with this series he is showing how far we’ve come, and how far we still have to go. I for one will be watching it when I can, and I hope with it being on the TV station ABC that it will also appear on Netflix soon after it’s release so UK viewers will have a chance to watch it.

The first trailer has just been released, and I must say I was actually quite choked up after watching it. It really hit home that people had to, and are still going through hell just to be accepted for who they are, and with the divisive US election still fresh in people’s minds, this series is coming at a time when a fresh struggle for our community is upon us. I hope that the younger generation of LGBT folks, will watch the show, and know that the type of freedom they have today is thanks to a generation that endured violence, seething hated and brutality, and who cried out that they had had enough and fought back. I don’t want to waffle on with a big piece so I’ll let the trailer speak for itself, and hope it touches you in the way it touched me.

  • Milo Yiannopoulos school lecture cancelled after Department for Education gets in touch with school

Right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos was supposed to host a lecture at his former school, The Langton Grammar School for Boys, however, it has been cancelled due to “safety concerns” after the school was contacted by the Department for Education’s (DfE) “counter-extremism unit”.

Milo Yiannopoulos, the self-proclaimed, super villain of the internet has had a scheduled talk cancelled after the school was contacted by the Department for Education’s (DfE) “counter-extremism unit” after concerns about safety were called into question.

Around 220 students had signed up to hear Milo speak. A spokesperson for the school noted that, “the staff and students of the school were overwhelmingly in favour”, of Milo’s visit.

Concerns for the security of the school site and the school’s community were raised after activists planned to demonstrate during the event.

    The school’s spokesperson said,

“This decision was taken following contact from the DfE counter-extremism unit, the threat of demonstrations at the school by organised groups and members of the public and our overall concerns for the security of the school site and the safety of our community.

“We note that, within 24 hours of advertising the event, 220 Langton sixth formers had, with parental consent, signed up for the event and that objection to our hosting Yiannopoulos came almost entirely from people with no direct connection to The Langton. The staff and students of the school were overwhelmingly in favour.

“Whilst disappointed that both the pastoral care and intellectual preparation we offer to our students has been called into question, we at The Langton remain committed to the principle of free speech and open debate and will resist, where possible, all forms of censorship.”

Writing on his Facebook page on Monday, Milo said,

“My old high school has been bullied into canceling my talk on Tuesday by the “counter-extremism” unit at the U.K. Department of Education.

Who even knew the DoE had a counter-extremism unit? And that it wasn’t set up to combat terrorism but rather to punish gays with the wrong opinions? Perhaps if I’d called the speech “MUSLIMS ARE AWESOME!” they’d have left us alone. Disgusted.

People are noticing Simon Cowell’s gay jibes at Louis Walsh

Another week, another gay jibe at Louis Walsh.

It seems as though “casual homophobia” is the new thing for Saturday night TV. Last night Peter Kay, whilst on the BBC, was blasted on social media for a joke some decided was homophobic and over on ITV Simon Cowell, once again, made a comment alluding to Louis Walsh‘s sexuality and viewers are starting to notice the frequency at which it happens.

In Saturday’s (19th Nov) broadcast of the X Factor, Simon Cowell questions why Louis might like Matt Terry over Ryan Lawrie, after the 64-year-old judge told Ryan that Matt was better than him. Simon’s response, it seems, was done in such a way that many people took to Twitter to call him out on his “gay jibes”.

A couple of weeks ago another comment by Simon prompted huge speculation over Louis’s sexuality. During the critique of Matt Terry’s performance of “I’m Your Man”, which Louis thought was “a bit karaoke”, Simon aimed his critique at Louis saying, “This is the first time Louis has said I don’t like I’m Your Man.”

This isn’t the first time Simon has made jokes with someone’s sexuality as the butt of the joke (pun intended). During a live Xtra Factor broadcast, Simon asked Rylan Clark-Neal whether he liked the backdoor.

  • Lance Bass has taken drastic measures to stop sweating

So what is Lance Bass doing to stop sweating through his clothes?

In pictures posted to social media Lance Bass is seen taking drastic measures to stop underarm sweating through his clothing. Yes, he’s having botox injected into his arms pits and it looks super painful.

The former boy bander joked, that he should be putting the injections into his forehead, but putting it into his arm pits saves him a fair few $$$’s in dry cleaning!

“I should be putting #Botox in my forehead , but putting it under my arms saves a lot of wardrobe under the hot lights”

Botox is known to stop the sweat glands from producing sweat for around six months at a time and can be useful to control excessive sweating. You can use Botox to stop sweating in your palms too!

Fans were quick to comment on the picture with one telling the star that he was “brave” while another, clearly excited by the sight of Lance’s pits said, “I’m just glad you showed your pit!”

The model uploaded a rather saucy piccy which shows off his incredible bod and well, the star of the show is quite clearly below the waist line, which leaves absolutely NOTHING to the imagination.

Sanjay Sood-Smith looks pretty darn hot we have to admit after he shed an impressive amount of weight. In total, Sanjay managed to lose a stone and a half of fat thanks to the help he got from his personal trainer, Nathan Johnsonn.

Posting pictures to his social media, the former Apprentice star, who appeared in the 2014 series of the Lord Sugar hit, looked toned and confident and remarkably slimmer thanks to all his hard work over a 12 week period.

The star posted a number of before and after pictures which showed the extent of his stone and a half weight loss. Featuring one that shows that the star’s stomach no longer hangs over his trousers, proving that hitting the gym can really help shift those stuborn inches.

In one of the pictures the reality star joked that most of his “beer belly” had almost completely disappeared. Sanjay has lost inches across his back, belly and chest and cuts a fine looking figure these days.

Earlier in the year the businessman was spotted downing cocktails in Ibiza with chums on a “lads” getaway.

Sanjay also managed to work hard on his back and really slimmed down his lower back.

    Bravo Sanjay!

  • Dear 13-year-old me… What would you say to your 13-year-old self?

What would you say to your 13-year-old self if you had the chance?

    CREDIT: bigstock-soupstock
    CREDIT: bigstock-soupstock

    Dear Thirteen-Year-Old Me,

There is potentially never a more shaping time in ones life than the torturous years of teenagehood. If 80’s movies have taught me anything it’s that everyone deserves their very own coming of age story. Ideally we’d all get our own Molly Ringwald moments as a teenager – we’d kiss over cake, or bond through detention, or maybe we’d own our very own collection of questionably embellished bowler hats. However, being Molly Ringwald isn’t as easy as it seems, in fact for most of us – especially when we identify as part of the LGBT community – we rarely happen to get the teenage coming of age story we truly deserve.

I understand you are currently struggling through your very own version of hell on earth – minus all of the actual flames, of course. You’re struggling with your sexuality like so many have before you, and I am writing to warn you of what is to come. You’ll soon be entering the second stage of your senior school career. The first stage was realising that you might, actually, possibly, be kind of gay. Next you are going to spend a long time hoping – and literally praying – that you aren’t, a fairly wasted effort when everyone else already seems so certain that you are. Then, for an even longer time, you are going to play one of the least convincing roles ever, the role of a straight boy. Seriously, the time that you played Mayor’s Assistant #1 in your year six production of Rocky Horror was more convincing – and that wasn’t even a real role.

Throughout all of these stages one thing will remain present and consistent all the way, and that is how alone and isolated you will feel. You’ll believe that no one else has ever felt, or worried, or been bullied the same way ever before, and this is most definitely not the case.

Hindsight is honestly 20/20, much like it’s a cold-hearted bitch, but I’ve learnt a lot since my teenage years, so allow me to bestow some wisdom onto you – you awkward and quiet baby gay.

Firstly, It gets better, you’ll no doubt hear this a million times throughout your life, but that makes it no less true. Year on year since coming out I have personally found life has kept getting better for me, so by no means assume that where you are now is where you’ll be forever. I don’t want to fall into the rhythm of a long-winded and overtly rambled speech on the importance of being oneself – especially when it can all too often feel like the entire world is pushing against you to be someone else. However, please try to be you. Closed-minded people will always find issues with change and difference – and while we may know that whom we love makes absolutely no difference to who we are as people, those kinds of bigots will always struggle to understand that. Trust me, in the long run you’re going to regret pretending to be someone else much more than you could ever regret being true to yourself.

When it comes to the actual bullies I’m going to borrow a few words from the founder of TheGayUK, Jake Hook, have “the bravery to confront them,” know “that when you push back that bullies rarely know how to respond and once you’ve taken away the power of their words they get bored and move on.”

I think he, like many other members of the LGBT community, would agree with me when I say, “Screw the haters, be proud and be brave”.

One final thing, remember you’re not alone. You are a part of a huge, loud and supportive community that all know exactly what you’re going through because most of them have already been there themselves.

You’ll be okay. You’ll be fine. You’ll be grand. You’ll be gay.

    Sincerely,

    Twenty-Five Year Old You

The internet just slayed Milo Yiannopoulos

Professional Internet villain just had his ass handed to him, on a plate, as hundreds of people took to Twitter to share their disgust after his appearance on tonight’s Channel 4 News interview with Cathy Newman.

Milo Yiannopoulos the self-styled poster child of the conservative youth in America is finding out that he doesn’t have many supporters in the UK. Scores of people have taken to Twitter to troll the troll with his name becoming a trending tag on the social network after appearing on Channel 4.

Milo, who was a very vocal supporter of Donald Trump during his presidential campaign, has proved to be a divisive character whose thoughts on feminism among other hot topics have proved very unpopular.

Milo’s Twitter profile was first unverified and then suspended earlier this year, following a spat with Ghostbuster actor Leslie Jones.

He’s been hanging out with his lady friend, Faye Brookes, in New York and it seems as though they’re worried about being spotted in Times Square. During a quick mini bicker about packing too many clothes, Faye turns to Gareth and says, “we’d better pipe down before someone recognises us”.

Gareth quickly pops on his sunglasses and suddenly no one is none the wiser.
