  • RECIPE | Sparkling Lavender Lemonade

Homemade lemonade is so simple to make and when you use real lemons, it is bursting with vitamin C. Now that summer is here, it is a great time to have stock syrup in your larder.

Below, I have included the recipe I use for a basic stock syrup which may be infused with many alternatives including; Elderflower, Rosemary, Star Anise, Mint – the list is endless but my favourite is lavendar which turns the lemonade a light shade of pink. Stock syrup will keep for many weeks in an air-tight kilner jar in your larder but lemonade is best consumed on the day it is made.

    Makes 1 Litre

    Ingredients.

    Stock Syrup:

    – 250g Caster Sugar
    – 250g Still Water
    – 2-3 Tbsp Dried Lavender

    Lemonade:

    – Juice of 3 Lemons
    – 750ml S. Pellegrino Sparkling Water

    Method.

    1. Place the sugar and still water in a saucepan over a gentle heat and bring to the boil. Place off the heat, add in the lavender and allow to infuse for a number of hours or preferably over-night in a small kilner jar.

    2. Strain the syrup, mix the lemon juice with the stock syrup in a large jug and gently pure over the sparkling water. Serve poured over ice-cubes.

  • OPINION | What is in the label?

“You know Charlotte? The girl who can relate anything in life to something that has happened in The OC”

Even though we may not want to admit it we all place labels on others. Within every group of friends there are characteristic, personality traits or specific physical features that define someone. Although these are positive ways to describe others, should we define someone because of their sexuality?

You may be an excellent sportsperson or a talented comedian. You could be the next Picasso or your devotion to charitable work stands out to others. Now, what would happen next if someone forgot all about what defines you and just referred to your sexuality?

Who agreed it was acceptable to define an individual based on their sexual preference?

Whilst being surrounded by those with limited views on homosexuality it confused me. I wondered who had made the rules of life where a man had to find a charming princess and why couldn’t I find a prince charming?

After coming out to family and friends I found that although I never changed – the opinions of others changed.

My friends when referring to me with others would use the term “gay”, and I couldn’t understand how the labels that defined me before disappeared.

Gay is merely a synonym for homosexual, which breaks down in Latin to mean same and sex. Since the late 1960s gay has been used in replacement of the label homosexual. Members of the LGBT took the label of gay as it felt more positive than the latter term homosexual which gave a more clinical feel.

Labels define us all in positive and negative ways but why should we allow people to overlook our other qualities just because of sexuality?

  • FILM REVIEW| I Want Your Love

★★★★ | I Want Your Love is collaborative film between gay porn studio NakedSword and independent filmmaker Travis Mathews.

Jesse is an aspiring artist who feels creatively blocked because of the state his finances and his massive amount of debt. After spending the last decade in San Francisco, Jessie decides to move back home to his parents in Ohio, the Midwest to free himself of the financial pressure.

I Want Your Love is the story of his last weekend in San Francisco with his friends, roommates and ex-lovers coming to his leaving party.

Sex plays an important role in this film and there are uncensored sex scenes from the start. Sex is used to show character development, intimacy, move the storyline along and the development of friendships: those that start with clear defined boundaries but turn into something more – entering that grey area between friend and lover.

Whatever type of man you’re into, you’ll find them in this film and I can guarantee that they’ll be in a graphic, all-exposed sex scene. Whether your taste be: bears, twinks, older, younger, white, black, Asian, muscly, ordinary or just an all-around lover of all.

The film is extremely erotic and at times felt like watching a porn film. There’s even a threesome scene. The obligatory porn “I’m going to come!” scene followed by – well use your imagination, makes several appearances in this film. Arguably the storyline gets lost at times in the incredibly hot, but distracting sex.

Jesse is completely likeable, relatable and discovers that he’s searching for his true self. Over the course of the weekend, he redefines what it means to him to be an artist, gay, and an adult. However, the ending was a bit of an anti-climax.

It’s brilliantly directed and shot in a way that makes you feel like your sharing the characters most intimate moments. I Want Your Love is at times: funny, emotionally touching, romantic and sentimental as well as being abundantly horny throughout.

There were slow scenes of sparse dialogue that were followed by peaks of rampant high-paced sex. There was an annoying character – one who really grated, but luckily he wasn’t in the film much.

Mathews stated that he wanted to give an ‘honest and relevant’ representation of everyday gay life for men in San Francisco. I’m not from San Francisco so I can’t comment, but if that’s what it is really like – get me on a plane!

I Want Your Love is the perfect film to watch with your partner or other very close friends – not only thoroughly entertaining, it will give you plenty of ideas in the bedroom department.

I Want Your Love is available to pre-order/order on Amazon.

  • Gay tourists in Russia could be jailed or deported

A warning for gay travellers and tourists thinking about venturing to Russia this year might need to rethink their plans after Russia passes anti-gay law.

The new bill, now fully in effect could find openly gay visitors, detained for up to fourteen days, if found to be promoting homosexuality, although it is unclear what constitutes promotion.

The new bill, now fully in effect could find openly gay visitors, detained for up to fourteen days, if found to be promoting homosexuality, although it is unclear what constitutes promotion.

    Skift.com has written:

The law also contains a provision permitting the government to arrest and detain gay, or pro-gay, foreigners for up to 14 days before they would then be expelled from the country. That provision ought to send chills to anyone gay, lesbians, bisexual or transgender who is planning to attend or participate in the Winter Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee released a statement calling for the acceptance of all athletes due to attend Russia’s winter Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee is clear that sport is a human right and should be available to all regardless of race, sex or sexual orientation,” the statement said. “The Games themselves should be open to all, free of discrimination, and that applies to spectators, officials, media and of course athletes. We would oppose in the strongest terms any move that would jeopardize this principle.”

The official and legal definition of ‘homosexual propaganda’ is currently unclear, however reports are emerging of arrests for kissing, holding hands, wearing or using rainbows.

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs has also updated its advice for gay people travelling to Russia. On their website the DoFA states:

“Homosexuality was illegal in the USSR up until 1993 when it was decriminalised. However, a federal law has recently been approved that prohibits the promotion of homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality and transgenderism in the Russian Federation. Fines can now be imposed on those who provide information about the homosexual, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities to minors. According to the legislation, public displays of affection or activities regarded as counter to the law may also lead to fines, arrests and deportations.”

Actress Tilda Swinton was recently seen in front of the Kremlin holding a rainbow flag with a statement that read:

“In solidarity. From Russia with love.”

  • Matt Fishel releases When Boy Meets Boy

Matt Fishel releases 6th single, When Boy Meets Boy and celebrates with one of best music videos we’ve seen in a long time.

Not many people can say they include Stephen Fry as a fan of their artistry, but openly gay singer-songwriter Matt Fishel, can. Speaking about Fishel’s music Stephen Fry said:

“Gloriously gay, sweetly romantic, wonderful touching music”

Now if that’s not a call to action, we’re not sure what is.

And what can we say… We completely agree!

When Boy Meets Boy is released worldwide on iTunes and Amazon as a 3-track single, including an exclusive remix from Dutch DJ/Producer Matt Pop (RuPaul, Almighty Records).

The original music video for the song is a short animation film directed and animated by Joe Phillips, who also created the beautiful artwork for Matt’s album. This new video is a fun ‘boy meets boy’ love story between Matt and the mysterious, super-cute skateboarder Marcus… with a superhero twist!

Matt has crafted his own unique style of songwriting and production, with themes of sexuality, education, love and lust running through his work. However, his songs and lyrics deal openly with the joys, pains and experiences of growing up as a gay teenager and young man, setting him apart from other artists.

  • COMMENT | What’s your magic number?

So what’s your magic number? You know the number that I’m talking about…

Some of you might have shifted uncomfortably upon reading that or being asked? But don’t worry I’m not looking for answers.

The number in question, of course, refers to the number of sexual partners that you have had. What quite defines a number varies from each person’s list and each conversation. I suspect that this is due to each person’s desire to either increase or decrease the total for their own reasons.

Of course, this is commonly asked at the start of many a relationship, but why the hell do we care? And what is the impact? Coming into a relationship we may have many questions about our partners, while the questions may be free from judgment, what we are doing is trying to get a better picture of who that person is and their suitability as a partner.

As human beings, we tend to fill the gaps with our own imaginations and therefore we create an idealised view of that person from what we know. By getting to know them better we are testing to see if our perception matches reality. However, we all have history and that can be very different from the place that the other person finds themselves in at present.

By challenging our perspectives of other people we are inviting change into a relationship, for example if you felt your boyfriends figure was too high, would you still hold them in the same regard. Of course they have not changed as a person the only shift is our perception of them; of course if they are on grindr with their junk hanging out in their profile picture, you’ve got a pretty good idea that they aren’t sat at home at night sewing quilts for the church fete.

In male-male relationships, this can sometimes cause additional frictions, as there may be an on-going power struggle for the dominant male. If one man perceives himself as the alpha male in the relationship, he may feel emasculated upon discovering his partner has a higher number. In the short term, he may become isolated and jealous. In the longer term, it may become resentment.

Of course there is the flip side, I have known someone in the past who has called off an engagement because he found out that she wasn’t a virgin, and yes he was Catholic but when you’re in your 40s chances are against it? He admitted that it was a silly situation but the woman he had loved had become someone different in his eyes.

I think the crux of the argument is how much of your past defines your future. As a person centred counsellor I work with the here and now, clients are powerless to change the past but making sense of it allows them to begin to shape the future. The important thing to remember at the start of any new relationship is that both parties have intentions to leave the past behind and create a new future together.
If you feel that you want to know your partners number, ask yourself why? What are you hoping to gain? Asking that question is like opening Pandora’s box, once it is open there is it cannot be closed again and the consequences will need to be dealt with.

Can a leopard change its spots? Yes, absolutely. If someone has an especially high number it may mean that they were unsure about what they were looking for, but they find something appealing in you that makes them want to change. Should they be ashamed of the person they were? Certainly not and neither should they be defined or judged by it.

And I’m not telling you my magic number.

Air New Zealand To Play Host To 1st Same-Sex Marriage At 30,000 Ft

Modern Family actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson will board an Air New Zealand domestic flight alongside a lucky Kiwi couple to celebrate the first ever same sex marriage at 30,000 feet next month.

Same sex marriage becomes legal in New Zealand on Monday 19 August, and Air New Zealand is on the hunt for a special Kiwi couple to prove that love is truly in the air by tying the knot on a flight between Queenstown and Auckland.

Air New Zealand’s Head of Global Brand Development, Jodi Williams, says the airline expects to be inundated with couples wanting to have a unique wedding experience so they can demonstrate their love to the world.

“We expect this marriage at 30,000 feet to attract significant global media interest. Naturally, the couple’s family and friends will want to be on hand for the special occasion so we have plenty of seats set aside for them. Jesse Tyler Ferguson being present will make the day even more memorable,”

    Ms Williams says.

“Jesse has been deeply committed to campaigning for marriage equality and the fact that he is prepared to travel from the United States to be here demonstrates the historic nature of this event.”

    Jesse Tyler Fergusson says,

“Justin and I are thrilled to be taking part in witnessing this historic moment for New Zealand! After launching ‘Tie The Knot’, our bow tie campaign for marriage equality in the US, it is clear that the journey towards marriage, both in the US and beyond, means so much to us. We cannot wait to celebrate this joyous occasion with Air New Zealand!”

Kiwi couples keen to walk down the aisle on board the Air New Zealand flight are invited to visit www.flyingsocialnetwork.com and share their love story. Entries close 26 July 2013.
Ms Williams says the lucky winner will also get the honeymoon of a lifetime.

“We’re shouting them a honeymoon to Palm Springs in the United States. It’ll be an amazing time there escaping the cold Kiwi winter.”
