  • Theatre Review | Rough Crossing – National Tour

    ★★☆☆☆ | Rough Crossing

    As a theatre company board a cruise ship to cross the Atlantic to New York for the premier of their new piece, it’s not just the waters that become choppy. Following the overhearing of an ill-timed romantic interlude between his two leads, Hungarian playwright Turai tries to keep his upcoming production on track, by re-writing parts of his script to cover up for their indiscretion. But with only four and a half days to rewrite and rehearse the play, it is all hands on deck to keep things afloat.

    Turai is played with an air of camp sophistication by John Partridge (EastEnders) and bounces nicely off Matthew Cottle (Spooks) as his downtrodden writing partner; whilst rising star Charlie Stemp outshines them both with a confident portrayal of the cabin boy, Dvornichek.

    Despite an impressive and lavish art deco set, sadly, the play holds little else in terms of appeal. The script is neither witty nor amusing, eliciting only the briefest isolated pockets of laughter (primarily from the same audience member); whilst the direction is lacklustre at best and inexplicably tacks on a wholly misplaced musical number at the end of each act. The whole thing doesn’t really know quite where to put itself – it is not quite sophisticated comedy, not quite farce, not quite “Carry On” and not quite musical comedy. Sadly, unlike the fictional ship, the whole story seems to go absolutely nowhere.

    Tom Stoppard’s play is a wordy affair with a rapidly delivered script which is awash with very gentile and outdated comedy and a smattering of physical slapstick thrown in; and fans of Stoppard’s work will no doubt relish the opportunity of seeing one of his lesser revived pieces performed in a professional, touring production.

    Despite a few issues with diction at times, the production is competently presented, but ultimately the show itself never really sets sail and ends up casting the audience member’s interest adrift.

    Rough Crossing is currently at the Sheffield Lyceum until 27th April 2019 before continuing on its national tour.

    1) John Partridge is openly gay and he is in a civil partnership with his husband Jon Tsouras. They partnered in September 2011.

    2) He was with Jon for 8 years before they married in front of family and friends in the Trafalgar Tavern pub in Greenwich, South East London.

    3) He was, up until March, his mother’s primary career as she suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. She was diagnosed in 2010. However, she’s now in a care home, because he felt he couldn’t “meet her needs”. John has cited his mother’s illness as one of the main reasons why he wouldn’t be returning to EastEnders.

    4) In 2010 He won Stonewall’s Entertainer of the Year Award.

    5) He has appeared in no less than 7 original cast recording of musicals from Starlight Express to Cats.

    6) In Eastenders, he played Christian Clarke who became the first gay couple to celebrate a civil partnership. At the time it cause quite a bit of controversy. See our top ten gayest moments of EastEnders.

    7) He joined Twitter in 2012 and has over 134,000 followers.

    8) John and his partner have a pet dog called Winnie and she’s the cutest thing…

    9) He was in Celebrity Big Brother in 2016. He used the money he earned on Celebrity Big Brother to pay for the care for his mother. In an interview before he went into the house he said, “My mum has Alzheimer’s, I pay for her care and it is expensive. The honest answer is I’m here to pay her bill.”

    10) Apparently he’s a good cook, with risotto being his signature dish.

    11) His husband keeps his feet on the ground warning him to “count to ten”, before opening his mouth. He said, “think about it again and then if it really compels you, then you’re allowed to speak.”

    EastEnders and former Celebrity Big Brother star, John Partridge and his boyfriend have just celebrated their anniversary!

    And they were on a yacht baby.

    The couple, Jon and John got civilly partnered in 2011, six years ago and are giving us serious relationship goals.

    Taking to Twitter, John’s partner, Jon said, “Six years ago I got to kiss my prince… Happy Anniversary @mustbejp Love you Baby xxx” and published a cute picture of the two locked in an embrace and kiss at their wedding.

    Speaking before he entered the Celebrity BB house in 2016, John said his husband keeps his feet on the ground… Including reminding the actor to “count to ten”, before opening his mouth. Apparently, Jon says,  “think about it again and then if it really compels you, then you’re allowed to speak.”

    So the 20th series of Celebrity Big Brother has just launched. We thought we’d see which LGBT celebs have starred in the ever popular show.

    Generally speaking, LGBT celebs tend to do well in Celebrity Big Brother. There have been two openly gay winners, Rylan and Julian Clary. There have been three runners-up, Sue Perkins, Austin Armacost and Michael Barrymore. However, some LGBT celebs have caused controversy and were booted from the house, including Tila Tequila and Christopher Biggins. There have been two trans women to take part in the show.

    Sue Perkins, came 2nd

    Former Great British Bake Off presenter Sue Perkins wasn’t as famous back then as she is now. Series two of CBB was just ten days long and she managed to stay right till the last day but didn’t win the series. That honour went to former Take That singer Mark Owen.

    Jodie Marsh, first evicted.

    Jodie Marsh who said she was bisexual after being celibate for 4 years didn’t fair well during her time on the show. She was the first evictee from the series. In an exclusive interview with THEGAYUK.com she told us that only gay porn gets her off now.

    Michael Barrymore, came 2nd

    His appearance in Series 4 of Celeb Big Bro was largely considered Michael Barrymore’s comeback to mainstream television following the death of a man at his home. He managed to spend 22 days in the house and was crowned runner up of the series.

    Pete Burn, came 5th

    Peter Burns came fifth the fourth series of Celebrity Big Brother. There were hopes he’d be invited back for the ‘All-Stars’ version of the show, but he died a few months before the start of the 17th series.

    Alex, who has spoken about how he might consider himself transgender or a cross gender-dresser in 2015 managed to win the 7th series of the show. During her time in the Big Brother house ex-wife Katie Price talked about how much Alex liked butt play.

    Gareth Thomas, came third

    Rugby’s first out player, Gareth Thomas, finished 3rd in the ninth series of Celebrity Big Brother.

    Jasmine Lennard, first evictee

    Jasmine didn’t fair too well in the tenth series as she was the first celebrity to be booted from the show.

    Louis managed to dance and prance his way through the 12th series of CBB placing 7th overall.

    Lauren was the first openly trans person to star in Celebrity Big Brother. She came third in the 12th series of CBB. In December, Lauren gave heavy hints that she’d be joining the 17th series, but so far she’s not appeared.

    Lee Ryan, came 7th

    Lee went in a straight man, however, a sexual revelation during a conversation with some housemates made many viewers believe that he is bisexual. Even his fellow Blue bandmate, Duncan James tweeted that he thought he was the only “only bi/gay in the band”. Lee lasted 24 days in the house.

    Ollie Locke, came 3rd

    Ollie announced that he was bisexual before entering the house and admitted that he had never slept with a man. He has since come out as gay.

     

    Series 14

    Leslie Jordan, 2nd evictee

    Will and Grace actor Leslie got more than he bargained for when he joined series 14. A few spats with Frenchy saw his best undies destroyed by the star.

    Kellie Maloney, came 9th

    Kellie Maloney became the second trans woman to enter the BB house. She won the nation’s hearts with her public transformation. Kellie also reveals that Tom Selleck would be her perfect man.

     

    Series 15

    Kavana, came 7th

    Boybander Kavana, didn’t get much airtime in the 15th series thanks to huge personalities like Michelle Visage, Perez Hilton and Katie Hopkins.

    Michelle Visage, came 5th

    Okay, so Michelle Visage is an honorary member of the LGBT community. She did herself proud in the house and even managed to make Katie Hopkins seem approachable.

    Perez Hilton, came 6th

    Apparently, possibly, the most talked about housemate in the history of the show. Execs were so eager to have him back for the latest series but failed to meet his “double the money” demand.

     

    Series 16

    Austin Armacost, came 2nd

    It didn’t take long for Austin to get naked in the BB house, in fact, it was just a couple of hours. He managed to bromance his way to the finals with James Hill.

    Tila Tequila, ejected

    The less said the better, to be honest. She got kicked out when BB execs realised that she had written some offensive messages on social media.

     

    Series 17

    Christopher Maloney, came 8th

    Christopher failed to make much of an impact in this season of CBB – although proved himself to be the nice guy.

    John Partridge proved popular and likeable during the 17th series of CBB.

    Poor Christopher Biggins didn’t last long in CBB after a number of offensive conversations, Biggins was booted off the show.

    Austin Armacost was once again invited back to the house but didn’t get very far after he was evicted in a cruel twist when housemates voted him the dullest. He was in the house for 11 days.

    Entered the house on day one. In her opening VT, Jemma proudly stated she was bisexual.

    La Cage aux Folles Theatre tour review

    You’ve probably heard of or seen this musical in some form or other. You might know it as the 90’s Robin Williams/Nathan Lane comedy film The Birdcage, the original French farce and subsequent film version from the 70s or the often revived 80’s Broadway musical.

    It’s a queer little story in more ways than one. Drag queen Albin and his long-term lover Georges run a nightclub in St Tropez. Georges’ son (from a drunken one night stand) who they’ve raised together wants to bring home his fiancée and her ultra-conservative parents. There’s one condition, though. Albin must be hidden away for fear of embarrassing their son with his high camp ways. 

    Famously launching the gay anthem ‘I Am What I Am” onto the world, this is a musical that emerged during a storm of reawakened prejudice amidst the AIDS crisis yet managed to lure thousands of people into seeing a heartwarming and fun show about gay men in a committed relationship. It revved up an astonishing reaction in an army of straight men dragged along by their wives and girlfriends who then ended up dancing in the aisles and cheering on a flamboyant and camp main character as he fought against prejudice. Quite a feat.

    This touring production is a bit of a paradox. It feels undercooked and underwhelming in parts and there’s a distinct lack of comic timing from swathes of the cast. In spite of this, it’s also incredibly good fun. Yes, it’s like a night at ‘Funny Girls” in Blackpool. Yes, it’s more Danny La Rue in pantomime than RuPaul. Yes, the drag queens would certainly get a dressing down from Michelle Visage for sloppy padding but it’s got an infectious charm nonetheless.

    John Partridge (best known for his role as Christian Clarke in Eastenders) as Albin shows his musical theatre pedigree and belts out a tune with panache. He’s also not a bad ad-libber (although be warned, public transport users. The show overruns due to this). The sets are stylish but wobbly. The costumes are glitzy and although the plot is absurd it’s tolerable. Forget production values and all that stuff though. All in all, it’s a fun night and the audience at The New Wimbledon Theatre were ecstatic.

  • LGBT Peoples We’d Like To See As The Next Bond

    Much is being said about who is destined to be the next Bond and well here at THEGAYUK we’d like to see a bit of diversity…

    So if Spectre is Daniel Craig’s last film in the Bond franchise and the job is up for grabs, we’ve got some suggestions from our very own community.

    1) Paris Lees

    Although we can’t find her age (how you do this in this modern age of Wikipedia, Google and FB is a dark art – something that could come in handy for a Bond), so we’re guessing she’s mid to late 20s, Paris Lees might be a little too young to play Bond, but how magnificent would she be. Outspoken, witty, dresses to kill,  well connected and knows how to mix a good cocktail we’re told.

    2) Andrew Hayden-Smith, 32

    Swave, British, easy on the eye and Northern – we’ve yet to have a Tyne And Wear bred Bond and we think it’s about time. He’d be the youngest Bond to play the part if he got it, but since Bonds need to last a decade we could definitely see Hayden-Smith maturing into the role nicely.

    3) Sue Perkins, 46

    Sue Perkins’ got the smarts and the sense of humour. She exudes confidence, which is a must for any Bond.

    Former cover star for THEGAYUK, Martyn is an international man having travelled the world extensively. He’s multi-lingual and a genius when it comes to Russian politics having served at a journalist for RT for nearly 10 years. At over 6’3″ he’d be one of the tallest Bonds to date.

    The perfect age for a Bond – plus Wentworth Miller’s got that whole prison thing going for him.

    Plus he looks amazing in a suit – so what more do you really need?

     

    6) Alan Cumming, 51

    Scottish born Alan Cumming, showed his Machiavellian side in The Good Wife, we think Alan could definitely pull off a gay bond. At 51 he may be a little too old – as Bonds should ideally last about 10 years in the role – which means by his last film he’d be into his 60s. He wouldn’t be the first Scot to play Bond, rather famously Sean Connery embodied the role and is considered one of the best Bonds ever.

    7) Asifa Lahore

    Can you imagine audience reactions to Britain’s most famous Muslim Drag Queen as Bond. It gives us shivers now, which is why we’re nominating her for the role. Asifa could be her own Bond girl as well – saving money on the budget.

    How’s about a Welsh Bond? Physically fit, a man’s man and knows a thing or to about the important of blending in with your crowd. Although Bond often works alone you need a man who knows the importance of teamwork.

    He’s got the looks and he’s the perfect age. EastEnders’ bad gay boy would be perfect for James Bond. Plus he looks divine all suited and booted. Aside from the perfect look, he’s got a heart of gold and he loves his mother – we’d like to see more of this fluffy side to bond.

     

    10) Seann Miley Moore, 26

    Hey if we’re going to totally f*ck with the heteronormative brand of James Bond we might as well suggest Seann Miley Moore. The X Factor star moved from Sydney, Australia to London to make his dream come true, proving that he’s ready to move mountains to get the job done.

    He wouldn’t be the first Aussie to take the part, George Lazenby played Bond in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

    Openly gay actor John Partridge is to make a return to EastEnders as the hunky Christian.

    After his stint in Celebrity Big Brother, John Partridge it seems, is irresistible to TV execs who have reinstated Christian and his on-screen mother Lynda Baron in EastEnders.

    Bosses are staying tight-lipped on the details surrounding their return, but the shocking storyline promises to change the Beale family forever.

    Christian was last seen in the Square back in 2015 when he attended the wedding of Ian and Jane as part of the 30th anniversary live week.

    On his return, John Partridge said:

    “I am thrilled to be able to return to EastEnders whilst touring the UK with Chicago… Christian is never far from my mind – I turn my back for five minutes and look what happens!”

    Christian’s character has in the past caused considerable controversy with some viewers of the long running London-based soap. In late 2008, 145 complaints were made after a kiss between Christian and new love interest Lee was broadcast before the 9PM watershed.

    Episodes featuring John Partridge are set to air in Summer 2016.

    Next week the gay character Johnny Carter will return to the square to reunite with his family.

    Whoever had control of John Partridge’s Twitter whilst he was in the house is literally boss.

    It’s fair to say that while he was in the Big Brother house actor John Partridge cause a bit of a stir outside in the real world. It wasn’t long before the trolls left their riverside dwellings to have their say on Twitter. Well John Partridge’s Twitter HQ took it in its stride.

    Whoever was controlling his social media was literally boss and knows the true meaning of “Bye Felicia”, owning every single negative comment that came toward’s the star’s official Twitter account.

    Whoever it was, proved that they had as much sass as the real life John and slayed troll after troll. The social media team’s withering put downs kept coming and coming. They were on point.

     

    JP was the first of the finalists to be evicted in last night’s final and was met with a mix of boos and cheers from the crowd. Before he went into the house John said that he was doing the show to help pay for his mother’s care home costs.
