HOTEL REVIEW: Moxy East Village, New York City

    by Jamie Tabberer

A lift – or in that delicious New York drawl, an ‘elevator’ – can say a lot about a hotel.

Being easily spooked, I usually detest them. Thus, any distraction is welcome, from music to low-lighting or a retro lift operator/baby-sitter.

So then, what to make of the 286-room Moxy East Village, and its very, very memorable lifts? At first glance, you’re greeted by glassy explosions of stars, so brightly-lit, they’re piercing. On closer inspection, you see they’re actually emojis – including the beloved poop emoji. Once you’ve processed this (‘What the actual…’), and made awkward eye contact with the other guests in what feels like a hall of mirrors, you’ve reached your floor.

Full marks on the distraction front.

Irreverent, fun and young, the clearly-defined Moxy brand follows the lead of sister hotels Moxy Times Square and Moxy Chelsea. Still brand spanking new since opening in September 2019 – the rooftop bar isn’t even finished yet – this is dependable and well-located stopover, minutes from Union Square, that won’t break the bank. Prices start at $179 (£138.12) per night, and that isn’t easy to find in Manhattan.

A timelessly smart, clean exterior, courtesy of Stonehill Taylor, is somewhat at odds with more daring design and decor from Rockwell Group inside. Not least in the lounge, where wacky features included a vast collection of 90s knickknacks. Among them VHS tapes, a Fisher Price cassette player and a skee-ball table that begs you to play with it.

The famously (or infamously) compact rooms, meanwhile, exploit space in inventive ways: fold-away furniture, bunk beds, flat screens HDTVs literally at the foot of your bed. My queen room covered 155 square feet and I didn’t feel cooped up, but people I know who’ve stayed with the Moxy in the past have felt differently. My advice: go with it, and don’t let your luggage explode all over the room, as that’ll make it feel even smaller. Space is lacking, but it’s worth it for the price point and the perks, such as fast Wi-Fi, rain showers and a Netflix connection: hallmarks of a truly modern hotel.

Meanwhile, the moody lighting and plush textures in the Alphabet Bar & Cafe is a Manhattan fantasy come true, and a show-stopping hanging wire sculpture by Edoardo Tresoldi in the absurdly glamorous Cathédrale restaurant is befitting of a five-star hotel. Elsewhere, the atmosphere and the service exudes easygoing cool.

The East Village is one of umpteen gay playgrounds in NYC so there’s plenty to see and do on your doorstep. You simply must visit the Cock, a time-tested gay dive bar, and Big Gay Ice Cream – ‘like Ben & Jerry f***ed each other’, as my friend puts it.

But what really sets the East Village apart is its historical flavour: it’s the former stomping ground of actual, proper queer icons like Keith Haring, Andy Warhol and Allen Ginsberg. The latter, for example, lived at 437 East 12th Street for 40 years until he passed away in 1997. It’s also where Blondie’s Debbie Harry lived while working as a Playboy Bunny in the 60s (oh, to have been her roommate), and other famous former residents include Jack Kerouac, Jeff Koons and Madonna.

Gentrification has scrambled the countercultural spirit somewhat, so to get under its skin, a tour with an in-the-know local is good bet.

HOTEL REVIEW | PGA National Resort and Spa, Palm Beach

A peaceful oasis where you and your game come first.

    PGA National Resort review
The Champion course at the PGA National

Gay golfers will rejoice in the sheer grandeur and scale of the PGA National Resort & Spa Palm Beach Gardens in Palm Beach Florida. There are five courses for you to enjoy, each offering their own challenges and joys, but if you’re a beginner, don’t worry, they’ll even help you on your way with a lesson or two with a professional golfer. I did. I can’t say I’m any better than when I started off, but I do know now, that you shouldn’t treat your hitting stick (i’m reliably informed they’re called clubs) like a tennis racket.

    The Room

Step into your room and you’ll be amazed at the size. Americans are known to go large and they haven’t disappointed at the PGA National. We stayed in a deluxe junior suite, which can fit most people’s entire apartments in it. It comes with a comfy seating area and a giant king bed.

The room is decorated in brown and red tones, which is the perfect opposite to all the blue sky and greenery of your outdoor surrounding. It makes the space a sexy getaway after you’ve spent all day on the course.

There are over 360 rooms at the resort.

    The People

Professionalism is the word du jour at the resort. As you’d expect, nothing is too troublesome from the valets to the receptionists. Early evening you’ll be greeted with a knock at your door with the next day’s weather forecast written – it’s like having your own real-life Siri, but much friendlier.

Of course, everyone who works here is passionate about two things. Golf and hospitality, which is why PGA National Resort and Spa is the number one name in Golfing resorts.

You must have a meal at the award-winning Ironwood Steak & Seafood restaurant. Fresh and wonderfully presented food awaits you at one of the most respected restaurants in Palm Beach Gardens.

    The Location

Part of the reason why you’ll choose to stay at the PGA National Resort is for the golf and you might not even leave, however, if you get a moment, be sure to get lunch at Palm Beaches’ hippest eatery, Guanabanas (960 Northway Ala Jupiter) which is a short drive away. If you’re looking for some culture check out the Flagler Museum, the story of Henry Flagler is breathtaking and he and his vision is the only reason why southern Florida exists as a tourist destination.

If you’re looking for a pamper beyond your expectations we can wholly recommend the spa at Eau Palm Beach (100 South Ocean Blvd).

    The Gay Scene

There are a few options in Palm Beach, for drag shows you should visit Fort Dix (6205 Georgia Ave., West Palm Beach). There is also a leather meet once a month at the venue. Then there is Roosters (823 Belvedere Rd., West Palm Beach)  which boasts drag shows, karaoke and latin nights. There is also Penny’s at the Duke(902 N. Dixie Hwy., Ste. B, Lantana). To find out more on the local gay scene check out Hot Spots Magazine.

    Our Verdict

The PGA National Resort & Spa Palm Beach Gardens offers a generous package and we like that in a getaway. It is relaxed but not over familiar, friendly but not over the top, traditional but not stuffy. Refinement is key and the resort offers that in spades. There is an incredible view of the lake at the end of the pool area, take a moment to enjoy the view on a cloudless night as the moon bounces off the water’s gentle ripples and the crickets sing you a romantic serenade.

  • HOTEL REVIEW | Moxy Times Square

Unashamedly hip, effortlessly cool, functionally beautiful.

The Moxy, New York Times Square review
Moxy Times Square in the heart of Midtown, Manhattan

Overview | The Room | The PeopleThe Location | The Gay Scene | The Verdict

If you’re a Manhattan novice, or even if you’re not, you’ll probably want to stay close to Times Square. The hip and the cool amongst us will tell you that you need to stay on the lower west side where you’ll find the meatpacking district, Chelsea Greenwich but the newly opened Moxy, brings that effortlessly cool vibe right to Times Square’s backyard.

  • TRAVEL REVIEW | Gay hotspot Fort Lauderdale? Perhaps.

We hear many appealing things about gay hotspot Miami, and eyebrows start to raise when Fort Lauderdale, Florida wants to step up to contest with a gay scene that competes with all gay capitals around the globe. With fabulous beaches, outstanding weather, fresh seafood, and the recently launched direct route from London Heathrow to Fort Lauderdale (BA), I wonder if Fort Lauderdale can be listed as a favourite gay hotspot?

Retirement springs to mind when I hear about Florida, especially when the state boasts the highest percentage of people over the age of 65. It’s the centre of juicy oranges, the birthplace of commercial aviation, and thanks to the likes of Disney – tourism is the engine that drives Florida. I questioned why I’d choose to travel to Fort Lauderdale, instead of neighbouring gay Miami (30 miles) or gay haven Key West (approx. 189 miles away) and was surprised to find numerous gay exclusive hotels in the Fort Lauderdale area. Ideally situated near the oceanfront, I was welcomed by gay owned and operated – The Grand Resort & Spa. A reserved and refined resort that has plenty of touches, such as: the 24-hour access to the friendly and professional front desk team, pool/jacuzzi, unlimited towels, selection of housekeeping services, hot breakfast, fully equipped large kitchen/living room (in penthouse suite), quality toiletries including mouthwash. They all making a stay extraordinarily fresh and very comfortable.

Although The Grand Resort has its own award-winning spa, I ventured out (or I would never leave the resort) to the newly opened Hush Spa situated in Fort Lauderdale’s gay area of Wilton Manors. Spoilt for choice from the all-male focused indulgent menu, I opted for one of their signature massages, and if you enjoy precision with elements of nurturing, then I think any service would be recommended. The social atmosphere that the staff creates makes you want to keep a bit hush-hush like a new best friend – all to yourself.

Wilton Manors is where most of Fort Lauderdale’s gay establishments are – I struggled to find a bar that didn’t have a view of a shopping complex or a car park, and travelling from wintry London, why would I not want to spend time al fresco with a view of the ocean?

Walking along the oceanfront was far more appealing, and the South Florida humidity always complements a stroll.

During my visit, I took an oceanfront 2-mile walk in shorts, vest, and flip-flops (Dec ‘17), and after some time in the sun, my face was ready to be treated. I found myself sipping champagne (nice touch!) before my facial at the impressive Marriott Harbor Beach Spa; by this time, I was almost certain that spa hopping was far more fitting than bar hopping. The treatment I had was exceptional, and I couldn’t wait to show off my new face to the Floridians, and what better way of doing so than by dining at Ocean 3030?

Executive Chef Adrienne Grenier had all my senses on fire with her carefully constructed tasting menu. I felt as though my dishes were prepared as if I was the only patron in this shimmering restaurant. The American modern seafood restaurant embraces dining with technology by having electronic menus on tablets so you can see how your cocktails will be made and have an idea of what your dishes will look like – some may argue that they want to be surprised, and that’s fine as they have regular paper menus as well.

The surprise will always be in the taste. Chef Grenier made sure that my meal was going to be the highlight of my trip, and it indeed was – over and over again.

The Grand Resort and Spa is grand in value and location, and I would loosely recommend Fort Lauderdale to those that enjoy the quieter side of a gaycation. Accommodation at The Grand Resort is a lot less inexpensive (even for a penthouse) compared to other hot spots such as Miami and Key West. Clothing is optional in parts of the resort, which meant that you could sunbathe and use the jacuzzi in the nude.; however, because of alcohol licensing, swimwear must be worn in and around the immediate area of the pool – great for those that enjoy a drink, and not so great for those that don’t.

Five things that you must never do at The Grand Resort & Spa:

    • Don’t miss The Grand Resort’s happy hour
    • Don’t be an introvert while using the jacuzzi
    • Don’t use the fitness centre (you’re on gaycation!)
    • Don’t pet Racoons as if they were house cats
    • Don’t keep Ocean 3030 a secret to fellow patrons

A grand hotspot for a gaycation in the winter sun!

  • HOTEL REVIEW | Santiago Resort

    HOTEL REVIEW | Santiago Resort

    ★★★★★ | Santiago Resort

    The Californian TREAT in RETREAT

Located in a highly desirable neighbourhood in Palm Springs, California sits a quaint resort that is the recently refreshed Santiago. The friendly and attentive staff welcomes you to this gaysclusive 24 room – awe-inspiring resort. Most rooms boast landscape views of the towering mountains that surround this swim suit optional resort. The long list of amenities includes TV, DVD, fridge, microwave, king size beds, ceiling fans, housekeeping, WiFi, heated oversized pool, and Jacuzzi that are all a stone’s throw away from the tropical exotic surroundings that light up this resort. Santiago is one of the very few resorts that also offer both complimentary continental breakfast as well as a healthy light lunch that varies daily. As this resort sits proudly near downtown Palm Springs you will be neighbours with the bustling areas that will cater for your retail, wining, dining and dancing needs.

Sometimes when we travel we think that we have to go out and explore or else we feel as though we are missing out on something and Santiago has this natural pull to the resort that even though the area is waiting to be explored…so are the hammocks, the fire pit and the views that come with both. OK so one might think that there is only so many views that one can take – I stayed here in January and back home in London it’s not very often you get to look at a backdrop of snow-capped mountains behind a canvas of clear blue skies whilst drinking English Breakfast tea (of course). When dusk starts to creep in and you are backstroking in the warm pool it’s difficult not to get carried away with a number of stars that twinkle away from any light pollution. I left thinking is Palm Springs closer to the moon – it seems that way.

Santiago is the treat in retreat!

  • HOTEL REVIEW | Hilton Times Square

HOTEL REVIEW | Hilton Times Square

Gloriously central and fabulously touristic, the Hilton Time Square is the perfect place to book if you’re staying in New York for the first time.

    Hilton Times Square
Right in the heart of it

Overview | The Room | The PeopleThe Location | The Gay Scene | The Verdict

One of the things you’ll find if you’re staying in Manhattan is that hotel rooms come in two sizes. Small and extra small – that is unless you’re staying at the Hilton near Times Square.

Some may argue that the location is too conventional and too safe and that the “real” New York happens several blocks away, but if you’re a Big Apple novice and you’re looking for a friendly place in a city of over 8 million people, the Hilton is a perfect choice.

  • TRAVEL REVIEW | Hot In Palm Springs

Travellers that are staying in Los Angeles will find that Palm Springs can be a convenient getaway as a vacation from a vacation. The most convenient way to get to Palm Springs from Los Angeles is to drive.

Driving time will take 2 hours with no traffic (approx 120 miles from Los Angeles).

Palm Springs is also served by a small International airport, therefore continuing your journey by air within the USA from Palm Springs is possible.

Palm Springs is a desert city, therefore, the heat here can be extremely over bearing, occasionally you will feel a breeze, however, it will be conditioned with high temperatures of heat!

Many businesses (including the East Canyon Hotel + Spa) have water misters in the outer areas that will dust sprinkle mist to keep you cool. All venues have air conditioning.

Don’t let the heat put you off, after you have soaked yourself in the hotel’s pool venture out to the local attractions such as The Aerial Tramway, Joshua Tree National Park, Palm Springs Air Museum, Palm Canyon Drive and the highly recommended Red-Jeep tour, where you will be guided by a local, transporting you in a red jeep discovering the gems that make Palm Springs a place that is blissfully manicured.

  • HOTEL REVIEW | Easton Mountain: Bit of camp for winter

★★★★ | Easton Mountain: Bit of camp for winter

It’s startling that there are gay capital-dwellers who travel to New York City, Boston and Montreal and are yet to discover the nearby gem that perches on the edge of Albany that is Easton Mountain.

Created by gay men, Easton Mountain is comfortably a sanctuary and retreat with a unique experience that unites and takes a step back from the surrounding cities hard-partying tribes – set in a quaint corner of Hudson Valley, Easton Mountain’s positive spirit is drizzled by the collection of men that embrace the land and everyone within their adopted brotherhood.

Easton mountain is host of the warm welcoming ‘Winter Camp!’ Where you’ll find fun winter activities, new friends, community and warmth.

Freely surrounded by acres of land and way below the towering snowy mountain sits the guest house where accommodation is en suite and semi-private. Branching from the guest house we see the Lodge and Temple both sharing the pulse of 175 acres of land.

If it’s possible to be tiresome with the backdrop then discover a range of indulgent in-house workshops that focus to revitalize, replenish and hydrate your mind. The workshops are available for you to select freely to participate in and are all run by dedicated and volunteered facilitators who all create and provide personal attention to everyone attending.

Restore your bodies glow on the premises outdoor pool and indoor Jacuzzi along with massage rooms to complement your relaxation. Nestled a few feet away from the guest house is a yurt-style sauna where the atmospheric temperatures continue to rise after hours.

Enjoy the very height of tasty nutritional home-cooked meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner can’t arrive fast enough with the most lavishly catered generous spread that awaits each meal time.

Experience why this gay inspiring haven is quite simply New York State’s level of supreme perfection for the spoiled for choice gay voyagers.

The most favourable way to get to Easton Mountain is to arrive in Albany’s train or coach stations and then driven to the land via volunteers at Easton. Albany Airport is served by numerous national airlines, therefore, continuing your journey by air within the USA and afar is convenient.

Whether you travel from near or far, any strains from long flights, drives or rides will rapidly dissolve when you begin to discover the colourful gems that make Easton Mountain blissfully manicured in this land of many ‘campers’.

  • HOTEL REVIEW | The Pineapple Point, Fort Lauderdale, USA

★★★★★ | The Pineapple Point, Fort Lauderdale, USA

Fort Lauderdale, Florida makes an impressive POINT!

Many gay travellers tend to head to Miami for its busy South Beach area that offers a gateway to its swanky bars, famous nightspots, sandy beaches, exclusive shopping, numerous tanning products and ridiculous diets to compliment that cocktail that you have in hand – oh, and if it’s not a low-calorie cocktail you may be looked at as if you were drinking CONCENTRATED orange juice!

Yep, this is ‘SoBe’ (South Beach for short) or a more polished ‘SE’ (Southend, Essex) that definitely has its characters eyeing tourists from behind their velvet rope.

Thankfully there is a ticket out of this hot mess and the ticket hero that is Fort Lauderdale comes to the rescue. Just 45 minutes north of Miami sits a very patient area of Florida that has an increasing gay population in the Victoria Park and Wilton Manors gaybourhoods.

Numerous gay hotels line these areas with easy access to the calm and powdery white beaches. The Pineapple Point Guesthouse and Resort claims that over 90% of their business is from returning guests and really I am not surprised. This resort is tucked away in luscious heaps of palm trees and boasts spacious bedrooms to three-storey villas with private splash pools and decadent furnishings. The beds are so ridiculously comfortable like where on earth did they buy these from!

If you choose to be social their repeat guests will offer you their non-attitude company and if you choose to be private then the friendly breeze from this resort will tempt you to relax. The Pineapple Point’s only downfall is you will have trouble deciding whether to stay in the quarters of your room, suite or villa or go outside on the grounds of the resort where a number of pools, Jacuzzis and hammocks are all inviting you with their silent persuading whispers – tempting you to their haven. Best to hire a car in Fort Lauderdale (with Sixt car rental) or jump on one of the bikes that the resort provides. Before heading out to dinner to the walking distance of the Las Olas Boulevard area (go to BAO Bar Asian Kitchen – so good!) the social hour by the pool in the evenings are hosted by the generous staff who are the lovely ones that promote a point to make you feel very welcomed at The Pineapple Point.

  • HOTEL REVIEW | The Out NYC

Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan is New York’s right hand that throws the glitter in its Cousin Chelsea’s face! As an ex New Yorker, I often wonder around Chelsea and have withdrawals from the energy Hell’s Kitchen famously oozes.

Regardless of budget head straight to 9th Ave (between 42nd & 52nd Street) and trip over gay bars such as Posh, Flaming Saddles and Mickey Spillane’s – all offering warm welcomes and steering you away from the capitalist aroma of NY by drawing attention to their generous happy hours! New York’s real estate is hands down one of the most lucrative in the world therefore accommodation can flare a hole in your tutu unless you stay at THE OUT NYC.

Described as one of the most high energy, full service hotels in the area this urban resort in Hell’s Kitchen at 510 W. 42nd Street is not too far from 9th Ave – it’s probably the same walking distance from London’s Astoria (RIP) to the Candybar.

THE OUT NYC predominantly welcomes the LGBT community on diverse travelling budgets. This hotel offers plush Quad rooms featuring 4 full size bunk beds with full amenities including individual TV’s – the bathroom is shared but relax as you don’t seem to care when you have to share a powder room at a bar or on a plane and if you do like your own space and travel on helicopters instead of the tubes then without the hefty price tag THE OUT NYC also offers private bedrooms listed as deluxe, studios and one bedroom suites all draped with particular mirrors and comfortable lighting. They also offer dog house suites (where you might find your clothes from the night before or an ex). All visitors are welcomed to use their Spa that has a sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi.

The staff all headline gorgeousness inside and OUT – you will have a hard time not asking them to join you for a drink at the hotels KTCHN bar and restaurant. THE OUT NYC is deep in Hell’s Kitchen but far from Hell on earth.
