  • Can lesbians call themselves “gay”?

What’s in a label? Some women who love women love the term lesbian while some, prefer the term gay, so which is right?

    It turns out both.

A Quora user asked whether she could say she was gay rather than use the term lesbian and people were quick to suggest that either was acceptable – however there may be some, who according to user Robert Pfaff who might be “vehement about the distinction”.

Chrys Jordan helpfully added, “If you are a woman who likes other women, you can call yourself a gay woman or a lesbian, or both.”

Lily added, “You can absolutely say you’re gay. That’s your choice and I think we all know what gay means. It’s about what you think and feel about yourself.”

    What does Lesbian mean?

    What does lesbian mean?

The dictionary defines Lesbian as a “homosexual woman”. The late 19th-century-word “lesbian” originates from the Greek word, Lesbios from Lesbos, which was the home of Sappho, who wrote poetry about her affection for other women.

Lesbian when used as an adjective about the people of Lesbos, describes someone from the island of Lesbos.

GLAAD defines the term lesbian as, “A woman whose enduring physical, romantic, and/or emotional attraction is to other women. Some lesbians may prefer to identify as gay (adj.) or as gay women”.

    Is Dan Wootton gay?

    © ITV Photographer: Tony Ward

He’s a well-known figure in the gossip world – probably second only to Perez Hilton in terms of solo media gossip brands – and he works for one of Britain’s biggest newspapers, the Sun, but what else do we know about the star?

    Is Dan Wootton gay?

Yes, folks, Dan Wootton is in fact gay.

The 33-year-old journalist took to Twitter in December 2013 to announce that he was gay and pro-equality. He said, “I’m gay and I believe in equality in every way. If the media hides gay relationships then how will they ever be normalised?”. He’s one of mainstream journalism’s most prominent openly gay editors and reporters. He has attracted a fair bit of criticism from the LGBT community because of the way that he has tackled certain subjects.

Last year, he attracted criticism over the way his story about Charlie Sheen’s HIV status was portrayed and he also attracted criticism after labelling George Shelley as “bisexual” after the singer was clear that he didn’t want to label himself.

Is Dan Wootton married or have a boyfriend?

As far as we know, Dan Wootton is not married and he’s not publicly disclosed if he has a boyfriend. We did put out a request, but he’s not answered yet!

    Where is Dan Wootton from?

Have you detected an accent from Dan Wootton? That soft lilt in his voice is a New Zealand accent, not Austrailian as some people mistake. He was born in Lower Hutt, which is a city in the Wellington Region of the Northern Island. He moved to the UK when he was 21.

    What was Dan’s first job?

Studying at Victoria Univerity he achieved a media and political science degree. He started his journalism career as an entertainment columnist for the Dominion Post. He was also a reporter for the daily TV show, Good Morning. He moved to the UK when he was 21 and eventually found a full-time job at Broadcast magazine. In 2007, when he was 24, he came the TV editor for News of the World before joining the Sun in 2013.

    Does Dan Wootton have enemies?

Being a reporter and keeping famous friends is a difficult task and quite a few have publicly dissed Dan over the years. In 2012, former X Factor winner Steve Brookstein took to Twitter to say, “‘All those people with HIV and not one of them is called Dan Wootton.”

Lilly Allen threw some shade when she Tweeted, “@danwootton *rolls eyes and wonders if you ever think about why you hate young girls so much* one for your shrink perhaps?”

Dan also faced a huge backlash after his report on Charlie Sheen’s HIV as “Hollywood HIV panic” was seen as an “insidious piece of stigma-reinforcing ‘journalism’” by Tom Hayes writing for the Independent in November 2015. Dan Wootton clarified that the startling headline of the piece was not his work.

  • Is it safe for LGBT+ to travel to Bermuda?

Is it safe for LGBT+ to travel to Bermuda?

Despite the repeal of same-sex marriage, Bermuda is relatively safe for LGBT+ travellers.

    skeeze / Pixabay

Firstly, we have to point out that in Bermuda it is legal to gay and lesbian. However, LGBT+ residents and visitors may still find that the people and its governance are still quite conservative.

It is illegal to discriminate on the basis of sexuality in Bermuda, but not on the basis of gender identity.

Up until February 2018, Bermudan same-sex couples had the right to marry. A law was passed in December 2017 effectively replaced same-sex marriage with domestic partnerships. It was given Royal Assent on the 7th February.

When Bermudan people were given a referendum on the issue of same-sex marriage, it was overwhelmingly voted against.

So is it safe for LGBT+ people to travel and visit Bermuda?  By and large yes, although due to its conservative nature, LGBT+ people might find it uncomfortable to show public displays of affection.

Crime rates against LGBT+ people seem to be low.

Please note, there is not an equal age of consent – and the law is different to the UK for gay and bisexual males. Gay and bisexual men must be older than 18-years-old.

The UK Government’s travel advice for LGBT+ people says, “Homosexuality became legal under Bermuda law in 1994, and in 2017 the Supreme Court of Bermuda ruled that same-sex couples have a legal right to marry (now out of date). Attitudes to homosexuality are tolerant but conservative, and some people may not approve of public displays of affection between same-sex couples. See our information and advice page for the LGBT community before you travel.”

In our opinion, yes it is safe to travel to Bermuda if you’re lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

  • Is it safe for LGBT people to travel to Indonesia?

Is it safe for LGBT people to travel to Indonesia?

Despite homosexuality not being illegal in Indonesia, recent events have shown that it is not an entirely safe place for gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people to visit.

Strictly speaking, homosexuality is not illegal in Indonesia. However, the country does have a very conservative view on same-sex sexual acts.

Recently there has been a crackdown on homosexuality and transgender people, particularly in the Aceh Province, which uses Sharia law to govern its people, Sharia law outlaws same-sex sexual activity.

There have also been reports where there have been raids on gay men in the Country’s capital city, Jarkata. In May 2017, dozens of men were arrested for allegedly attending a party at a sauna. Police raided the venue and captured 144 men, under broad pornography laws. The broadly written rules have been used to target the gay community in the past unfairly.

Punishment has ranged from 100 lashes, in public, in Aceh, to imprisonment and public humiliation in other areas.

THEGAYUK.com cannot, at this time recommend that anyone who identifies as LGBT+ travel to Indonesia for the foreseeable future. However, if you do visit, we recommend that you do not use gay saunas, which could be targetted by law enforcement officials. If you are travelling to Aceh province, you should refrain from public displays of affection with a same-sex partner.

With The Voice UK starting up again, the questions surrounding the star’s love life have started to emerge and people are interested to know if will i am is married or not.

  • What is cottaging and is it illegal in the UK?

What is cottaging and is it illegal in the UK?

    What does cottaging mean?

Cottaging is a slang term for sex between, usually, two men in a public space, typically a public toilet. Before same-sex sexual relationships became legal men, who were bisexual or gay had few options on where to have sexual liaisons so would have sex in discreet places, where they wouldn’t be caught. The term dates back to Victorian times when “cottage” referred to a small house or public house.

In the 20th century, public toilets in the UK sometimes took the look of a small cottage, sometimes with a thatched roof.

The sex between men who would frequent a cottage would usually be anonymous. Gloryholes, a hole drilled between stalls in public toilets became a way in which this sex could remain faceless.

Before the rise of gay bars and before homosexuality was legal in the UK, cottages were a way for gay and bisexual men to meet other men.

There are thousands of gay cruising grounds and cottages across the UK and still remain popular to this day.

Cottaging, the act of having sex in a public toilet, is illegal in the United Kingdom under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, and applies to both heterosexual and homosexual acts.

Is cottaging or gay cruising illegal?

The Sexual Offences Act 2003 doesn’t say however that sex in a public place is illegal. Cruising grounds and cottaging are two different spaces. Cruising grounds are defined as open spaces, where men can hook up with men, or straight couples can meet for sex (often referred to as dogging), as long as no members of the public can see you.

    What is cottaging?
    jarmoluk / Pixabay

You risk being arrested if reported by a member of the public. If this happens you have the right to legal advice from an on-duty solicitor at the police station. If convicted you could be sentenced to 6 months in prison and /or a fine.

A caution or conviction will result in a criminal record for a sexual offence which you will have to disclose in any criminal record checks.
