  • Star Trek had not one but two franchise firsts in the last episode

Star Trek Discovery is pretty groundbreaking…

Not just because the ship looks incredible, the strong female lead and a gay couple – with a storyline… but now they’ve gone into the final frontier – the f-bomb and beyond.

Yes, some fans were left stunned after Monday night’s episode (episode 5) when not one but two F-bombs were dropped, by two characters. Cadet Tily (Mary Wiseman) was the first person to ever say the word, followed by Lt. Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp).

Rapp told Indiewire that it was “f**king cool” to say f**k… saying, “We were aware of it, and we embraced it, and we had a blast with it” .

    Too right.

The other first was the scene between Lt Stamets and his partner, Doctor Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) having a normal, but cute, conversation in their living quarters. Previously there has only been snatches of gay couples in the Star Trek universe, but they got a full scene, being normal, brushing their teeth together…

Speaking about his character, Rapp said,

“I’m really excited and happy when a gay character is a part of a story — especially when a gay character is created in a complex and human and non-stereotypical, interesting way, and that has certainly been the case with Stamets,

“And you get to see his relationship. There was a little glimpse with Sulu in Beyond, and it was a nice nod.

“But in this case, we actually get to see me with my partner in conversation, in our living quarters, you get to see our relationship over time, treated as any other relationship would be treated.”
The couple even got a nod from George Takei, Star Trek’s original, Sulu

    Bravo Discovery!

Looking actor, Jonathan Groff is starring in the brand new Netflix drama, Mindhunter

Looking actor Jonathan Groff stars in the Netflix drama Mindhunter

In a stark contrast to his previous roles in Frozen, Glee and Looking, Jonathan Groff takes on a hard-hitting role, of an ambitious FBI agent who tries to understand the minds of some of the world’s most dangerous killers – so that he can catch other killers.

He’s teamed with experienced agent Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) in the Behavioral Science Unit and will work with his sometimes reluctant partner to find new methods of investigation. Together they will meet some of America’s gravest killers – and face the cynicism and scorn of the tradition-bound hierarchy of the 1970s’ Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Speaking about his new role, Jonathan said that the director, David Fincher made him feel “completely relaxed” despite feeling “intimidated” in meeting the Gone Girl and Social Network director.

“It was a wonderful, surreal feeling,” says Groff, of sitting down with the Seven and Zodiac director to discover he’d got the part. “The idea of meeting David Fincher feels so intimidating, because of the work he’s created, but the minute I sat down I felt completely relaxed. He makes you work harder than anybody else, but he makes you feel more at ease than anyone else.”

Mindhunter is set to stream on Netflix from 13th October.

  • OMG! Emmerdale just killed off a gay character – and fans are distraught

    We didn’t see it coming!!!

Emmerdale has killed off a gay character and his death has left fans reeling. Finn Barton, played by Joe Gill was killed off last Thursday. In an interview with the Radio Times, Joe said, that he felt it was “time to move on.” He said: “I felt professionally it was time to move on. I’ve loved every second of playing Finn and being part of the Barton family, but creatively it seemed like my time had naturally come to an end and I wanted to play different characters.”

Joe revealed that he felt “a bit sorry for Finn” when he heard about the fate of his character. “When you tell the bosses you want to leave you put the characters’ fate in their hands, and part of me felt a bit sorry for Finn I’ll be honest. But it’s a case of whatever’s best for the show, and if it meant getting that impact then it was the right thing to do”.

Fans were naturally upset by the heartbreaking episode with one writing: “Honestly devastated as Finn deserved a happy ending! Thank you Joe Gill for bringing us a character the public loved.” Another added: “Gutted. Love Finn,” while a third said: “I’ve already cried five times. I’m going to miss him a lot.”

Joe Gill identifies as straight, but he knew that the character of Finn Barton was gay before he auditioned for the part. Speaking in an interview he revealed that he enjoyed playing a gay character because it helps him understand, learn and see things from other points of view. He said, “I think it’s been really good for me to play a character that’s far removed from myself. It means that I get to see things from someone else’s point of view, and learn and understand things that maybe I wouldn’t have done if I hadn’t played Finn”.

  • Surprise… Louis got the boys

Well, it’s that time of year again… Where the X Factor contestants are carved up like meat and slung to the judges… This time round Louis got the boys.

The boys stand waiting for their mentor to make an entrance. They have no idea that Louis is behind the door – and could lead them to X Factor victory.

In a change to the norm, Louis Walsh got the boys this year, having only officially had them once before – he also had the under 25s in one of the first shows, before the boys became their own category.

This year, though, Louis is in with a good chance of winning the series, as the boys’ category has tended to do well with the voting audience at home, with the category winning six times, more than any other category in the competition.

Surprise lads! Louis is your mentor!
Louis gives the boys a pep talk… Let the battle commence.

Usually, Louis – the longest-serving judge on the X Factor, mentors the groups, having done so 6 times in the past. Louis has taken part in every season of the X Factor, apart from two years ago, when he was replaced by Nick Grimshaw in a massive programme shakeup.

However, he and Sharon Osborne were reunited last year – when the show’s execs decided to bring back the original judging line up.

The boys will now, have to go through the six chair challenge and then be taken to the judge’s houses where they will have to impress Louis and a guest judge before they are able to appear on the live shows.

  • Louis Theroux’s new documentary looks harrowing

Trust Theroux to get right to the nub of the problem

Louis Theroux's new documentary looks harrowing
America has a love affair with prescription painkillers, which has led to a widespread dependency on opiates, but following a crackdown on over-prescription, two million Americans are finding new ways to feed their habit.
With the pills now becoming increasingly expensive and scarce on the black market, vast numbers of Americans have turned to the cheaper and stronger opiate: heroin. The drug now claims more lives in the US than either car accidents or gun crime. And, for the first time in over two decades, life expectancy in the US is declining – largely attributed to the rise in fatal heroin overdoses.

In Huntington, West Virginia, Louis Theroux embeds himself in an Appalachian community that is being devastated and stretched to its limits by widespread heroin use. With one in ten babies in the city born dependent on opiates and a fatal overdose rate 13 times the national average, this is the epicentre of the most deadly drug epidemic in US history.

Louis spends time with the user community caught in the vice-like grip of drug misuse and follows the emergency services struggling to cope with multiple overdoses each day.

Louis Theroux: Dark States – Heroin Town BBC Two on 8 October at 9pm

  • Oh no! Netflix is raising its prices

Fan favourites such as Orange Is The New Black and House Of Cards are going to be a little more expensive to watch from now on.

Fan favourite House Of Cards will be a little more expensive to watch from now on thanks to a price hike.

Netflix is about to raise its prices, the first time in two years – meaning that your monthly spend could be up to 11.2 percent more expensive.

The standard UK price plan will rise by 50 pence, from £7.49 to £7.99, whilst the premium price plan will rise by a whole pound, meaning it will now cost £9.99 a month. That’s £12 extra a year… We can handle that… right?

The basic account will stay static at just £5.99 a month.

Charges only apply to the two top tiers of membership – the Standard and the Premium. The basic member will remain at £5.99.

In the US, the price plans will rise by $1 to $10.99 a month for the standard service and $2 to $13.99 for the premium service.

Netflix has been at the forefront of streaming technology, forcing mainstream television companies and film distributors to reconsider their options. In a digital age, Netflix is a real disruptor – as millions of people leave linear television behind.

So, what are we getting for our extra £££? Well, Netflix has promised to produce 40 feature films in the coming year, and a continuation of its original programmings, such as House Of Cards, Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why and ATypical.

    Still worth it though, right?

  • Those Bromans are now comparing d sizes

    “Give ’em what they want…”

Those Bromans are now comparing d sizes

We can almost hear the ITV execs screaming at the producers of Bromans – ITV2 brand new reality vehicle. Despite it being oh so very heteronormative they’ve managed to squeeze just enough gay into it, to satisfy us here at THEGAYUK.com.

In a heart to heart, two of the Bromans. Brandon and Glenn turn to the subject of peen sizes – over lunch. Well, if you are going to talk about willies, why not over a heart chilli special.

Glenn said to Brandon, “So everybody in here’s saying you’ve got a massive schlong”.

Brandon replied, “Tom loves it, he was literally going on about it, saying, ‘You’re the most longest I’ve ever seen, how do you do it?” I was like, ‘I don’t know I think it’s just natural’.”

Glenn, whose interest was piqued, asked, “How big is it?”, ever the man after our own hearts…
“It’s a bit like the chilli,” Brandon shot back.

And then that’s when this happened.

What ensued was basically porn, as Brandon fed Glenn his chilli. We sh*t you not.

Glenn revealed that his friends call him “Girthy Glenn…” – a picture we can not/do not want to get out of our heads.

You can catch up with all the comparing on the ITV HUB.
