  • Gay couple viciously attacked in New York’s Time Square

Two men, who are believed to be a gay couple, were reportedly assaulted by four individuals in New York City’s Times Square, during which “anti-gay slurs” were used.

The New York Police Department has stated that the incident, which resulted in the hospitalization of the two victims, may be investigated as a hate crime pending further information. Fox News reported that the attack occurred on April 8th at approximately 10:30 pm while the couple was walking around Times Square.

The victims have asked to remain anonymous but shared that the group made derogatory comments towards them before assaulting them physically. The couple was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where one of the victims reportedly underwent surgery. No arrests have been made thus far, and the investigation remains ongoing.

New York is relatively safe for LGBTQ+ travellers. However, like many cities, New York City has experienced incidents of violence and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community in the past. However, it’s difficult to say how frequently such incidents occur, as not all cases are reported to the police or media outlets. According to a report by the New York City Anti-Violence Project, in 2019, hate violence against LGBTQ+ people in New York City increased by 20% compared to the previous year.

The report also found that transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals were more likely to experience violence and harassment than cisgender individuals.

It’s worth noting that hate crimes and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals are not unique to New York City and occur in many places around the world.

According to a report from December 2020, 68% of LGBTQ+ individuals in England and Wales reported experiencing hate crimes based on their sexual orientation or gender identity within the past year, with 27% reporting physical injuries resulting from the attacks.

Most of these incidents went unreported due to a lack of trust in the police’s ability to take the reports seriously. Marta Lima, who helped create an app for those affected by hate crime, emphasized that every individual in the LGBTQ+ community has a story, but many are unaware of their rights and do not believe reporting incidents will make a difference.

Anyone who has witnessed or experienced a hate crime is encouraged to report it to the police or visit the True Vision website. In case of an emergency, dial 999.

Labour announces they’ll be marching in Prides across the UK, and lots of people are unhappy about that

The opposition party said it was “excited” to announce it was going to be marching in LGBT+ Prides across the UK on Twitter but blocked anyone from replying to their tweet.

The UK’s Labour Party has said that it will be appearing on Pride marches across the UK in 2023. In a tweet sent late last night (18 April 2023 at 11.54PM) the LGBT+ section of the party, LGBTLabour, announced that it was planning to join marches in cities including, Brighton, Birmingham, Manchester and London.

However, it closed off replies to the tweet meaning that followers were unable to air their views on the announcement. However the Tweet itself has been ratio’d, it has only recieved 74 likes (at time of publish) but over 709 Quotes.

THEGAYUK examined the first 100 quotes and found that all were responding negatively to the announcement.

Despite replies being turned off for the Tweet, Twitter users could reply via “Quotes” and many, many users were very unhappy about Labour joining Pride marches.

Labour, led by Sir Keir Starmer, is facing heightened scrutiny regarding their stance on LGBTQ+ issues, particularly those relating to transgender individuals.

In early April, Starmer received criticism for his statement regarding female sex organs, in which he stated that it is “completely biological” for 99.9% of women. Additionally, Labour faced backlash from LGBTQ+ activists for expressing support of the Equality Human Rights Commission’s proposed review of the UK’s Equality Act, which seemingly advocated for a definition of “sex” as biological, potentially impacting both cis and trans individuals negatively.

Trans activists cautioned against such a change in definition, arguing that it could adversely affect their lives. At Easter, Starmer generated further controversy for meeting with a Manchester church leader with anti-LGBTQ+ links. This was not the first instance of such controversy, as he previously visited Jesus House in London in 2021.

Now users on Twitter are user “Quotes” to share their distain for Labour

  • Icon and legend, Paul O’Grady dies, 67

Icon and legend, Paul O’Grady dies, 67

The comedian and presenter Paul O’Grady has passed away at the age of 67, as confirmed by his husband Andre Portasio in a statement.

O’Grady gained fame in the 1990s through his drag queen persona Lily Savage and went on to host popular TV programs such as Blankety Blank and other light entertainment shows like Blind Date. In the later stages of his career, he became a host of chat shows and showcased his affection for dogs on-screen. According to Mr Portasio, O’Grady passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on Tuesday evening. “He will be missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals, and those who appreciated his humor, wit, and empathy.”

Mr Portasio expressed gratitude on O’Grady’s behalf for the love he received throughout his career.

Just a few weeks ago, O’Grady had been on tour playing the character Miss Hannigan in the musical Annie. Taking to Instagram after performing in Newcastle, he expressed his delight at playing the role again and working with an “amazing and lovely” cast.

However, he recently departed from his weekly show on Radio 2 in August 2022, citing his displeasure at sharing his Sunday afternoon slot. O’Grady was also scheduled to present on Boom Radio for Easter Sunday, less than two weeks away from the time of his passing.

According to O’Grady’s long-time radio producer, Malcolm Prince, he had visited the star on Tuesday afternoon at his residence, where O’Grady seemed to be “laughing, smiling, and full of life.” Prince took to Twitter to express his shock at O’Grady’s passing, stating that O’Grady was proud of his work in Annie, thrilled to be back on Boom Radio, and eagerly anticipating several new projects. Prince also referred to O’Grady as a unique talent and a dear friend.

On Wednesday, Zoe Ball, during her Radio 2 breakfast show, expressed her and the team’s deep sadness upon hearing the news of O’Grady’s passing. She acknowledged that O’Grady had a special place in the hearts of Radio 2 listeners and the entire team.

    Wirral Star

Paul O’Grady was born in Birkenhead, Merseyside, in 1955 to a mother whose maiden name was Savage, which is believed to have influenced his famous drag persona. He began performing as Lily Savage in the 1970s and gained widespread recognition by advocating for LGBT issues.

Savage performed a solo show for eight years at London’s Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Later, he hosted The Lily Savage Show, a chat show for the BBC, in 1997.

O’Grady then presented a revamped version of the game show Blankety Blank, which aired until 2002. He later hosted The Paul O’Grady Show, which started on ITV in 2004, then moved to Channel 4 from 2006 to 2009 before being revived again in 2013 for two years on ITV.

In 2013, guest hosts fronted the chat show when O’Grady had a health scare. He had previously experienced heart attacks in 2002 and 2006, with the latter necessitating intensive care. In 2017, after the death of his friend Cilla Black O’Grady stepped up as the presenter of Blind Date when the show was rebooted on Channel 5.

    Award-winning

Paul O’Grady had a successful career in television and won numerous awards including a TV Bafta, British Comedy Award and a National Television Award for The Paul O’Grady Show.

In 2008, he was awarded an MBE for his contribution to the entertainment industry in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. O’Grady had a daughter with his friend Diane Jansen in 1974 and later entered a marriage of convenience with a Portuguese lesbian in 1977, legally divorcing her in 2005.

He married his husband in a ceremony held in London in 2017. In November, O’Grady was appointed as one of Kent’s deputy lieutenants, a position that involves representing the King at events in the area. O’Grady lived in Aldington, near Ashford.

  • Revealed: Met Police is institutionally racist, sexist, and homophobic, report finds

A recent review has found that the Metropolitan Police in London is institutionally racist, sexist, and homophobic. The review, conducted by an independent panel, was commissioned after the police force faced criticism for its handling of the murder of Sarah Everard earlier this year.

Following the abduction, rape, and murder of Sarah Everard in March 2021 by one of its officers, Wayne Couzens, a review was commissioned into the Metropolitan Police. Louise Casey led the year-long investigation into the force.

The report concluded that the force’s institutionalized practices are discriminatory and contribute to a lack of trust and confidence in the police among minority communities. The review highlighted several areas where the force needs to improve, including recruitment, training, and accountability mechanisms.

The panel made several recommendations for the police force to address these issues, such as improving diversity in recruitment and leadership, increasing transparency and accountability, and strengthening the force’s internal monitoring and complaints mechanisms.

The findings of this review are a stark reminder of the ongoing need to address issues of discrimination and bias within law enforcement agencies, and to work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

“Are you a giver or a taker”

According to the 363-page report, the police force also showed evidence of “deep-seated homophobia,” as well as widespread racism and bullying. The report revealed that nearly one in five lesbian, gay, and bisexual employees had experienced homophobia, and 30% of LGBTQ+ employees reported being bullied. Trust, confidence, and fairness scores among LGBTQ+ Londoners have also significantly decreased.

During the review, an openly gay officer reported that his colleagues continually asked him inappropriate questions about his sex life, such as whether he was a “giver or a taker,” both in briefings and around the police station. He also stated that the response team would collectively groan when an “LGBT matter” came through on the radio.

While he knew that acquiescing was not the right thing to do, he remained silent for the sake of his own mental health and career. He questioned how the police force could provide Londoners with the service they deserve if they couldn’t treat their colleagues with respect and compassion in one of the world’s most diverse cities.

Another openly gay female officer also reported witnessing racism and experiencing both misogyny and homophobia. For instance, a male officer told her that his “balls were cold” during a night shift, asking her to “warm them up.”

    Jokes on Whatsapp

In the report, an openly gay male officer, referred to as ‘E,’ revealed that he is frightened of the police after being subjected to a prolonged campaign of homophobia from within the Metropolitan Police force. The review disclosed that E had seen evidence of WhatsApp groups among serving officers that joked about stopping and searching him off-duty while using homophobic language.

E reported that when he raised his treatment with the Met, they brushed off his experience. According to Casey, the report’s author, there is a culture of denial in the force, which has allowed predatory and unacceptable behavior to thrive.

    Trust has hit Rock bottom

According to Casey, public trust in the Metropolitan Police has hit rock bottom. The number of Londoners who lack confidence in the force now exceeds those who do, and black Londoners have had lower trust levels for years.

Despite efforts to eradicate institutional racism, the Met has yet to rid itself of the problem, and public consent has been lost. The force has also become disconnected from the principles of policing by consent outlined when it was first established by Sir Robert Peel.

Moreover, the review found that black officers were 81% more likely to be subject to the misconduct system than their white colleagues. The report stated that complaints were often turned against officers from ethnic minority backgrounds.

LGBT+ Hate crime continues to rise

Like in many other countries, hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community are a problem in the UK. According to a report by the Home Office, there were over 14,000 hate crime offenses related to sexual orientation in 2019-2020, which represents a 19% increase from the previous year. These offenses range from verbal and physical abuse to more violent attacks and murder.

In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases of hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community in the UK, including the murder of Ian Baynham in 2009, the stabbing of two women on a bus in 2019, and the murder of three men in a terror attack in a park in Reading in 2020. The rise in hate crimes has led to calls for better protection and support for the LGBTQ+ community in the UK.

  • Apparently, pollution is turning flies gay

Apparently, pollution is turning flies gay

Gay animal news is making headlines in March 2023. Recently, Japanese scientists announced that they had successfully created baby mice from the cells of two fathers. Meanwhile, a German research team discovered that air pollution is causing male fruit flies to exhibit gay courtship behaviour.

I mean we’re wondering what “gay courtship behaviour” means at this point. A Grindr pic swap? A dark room fumble? Some cute love-meet in a uni library? Come on scientists work with us here.

So, Fruit flies use pheromones to find and mate with their partners. However, ozone pollution is destroying these pheromones, making it difficult for male fruit flies to distinguish between sexes. When exposed to ozone levels similar to those found in polluted cities, male fruit flies exhibited an increase in gay courtships, likely due to decreased pheromone levels.

Female fruit flies were also less interested in males exposed to ozone pollution.

It’s not all fun and games

While the gay drama of insect courtship is entertaining, the study’s findings about decreasing insect populations due to pollution are a serious concern. The research team warns that if pollutants continue to disrupt chemical communication, insects will not be able to reproduce at a sufficient rate.

As 80% of crops rely on insect pollination, this could have far-reaching consequences.

It’s important to note that same-sex relationships between animals are common and healthy, with gayness observed in 1,500 species. Apparently Bats are supposed to be some of the gayest animals on the planet well Swans are pretty darn gay too… (20% in same-sex relationships, often with families) and exhibit homosexual behaviour.

Love truly knows no boundaries in the animal kingdom.

  • Lord Brian Paddock’s husband, Petter dies unexpectedly

Brian Paddick is left “devastated” by the untimely death of his husband, Petter Belsvik.

British politician Brian Paddick has shared the sad news that his husband, Petter Belsvik, has passed away “peacefully alone” at their home in Oslo, Norway. Brian, who is a former contestant on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! and a member of the Liberal Democrats, announced the news on social media, telling his 14,300 followers that Petter’s cause of death is not yet clear.

In his tribute, Brian described Petter as his “beautiful, loving husband,” and expressed his devastation at the sudden loss. He added that he and Petter were devoted to each other, and that it will take some time to understand what happened.

Brian’s followers and colleagues quickly offered condolences, with Charlene White from Loose Women and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! sending their love to him and his family. The news has been met with sadness from many who knew Brian and Petter, and they will undoubtedly be missed by those close to them.

The news of Petter Belsvik’s passing has prompted an outpouring of love and support for Brian Paddick from various public figures. Labour MP Jess Phillips, Sky News’ Kay Burley, and Claire Fox are just some of the many people who have expressed their condolences to Brian and his family.

Not much is known about Petter’s life, but he met Brian in a bar while they were both on holiday in Ibiza. The couple got married in Norway in 2009, just over a week after same-sex marriage was legalised in the country. Their wedding was one of the first high-profile same-sex weddings in Norway.

Reflecting on how they met, Brian once said that he was “minding his own business” when he met Petter, and they spent just 24 hours together before parting ways.

Despite this, they clearly formed a strong bond and were devoted to each other until Petter’s sudden passing.

In addition to their chance meeting in Ibiza, Brian once revealed that a “divine intervention” brought him and Petter together again. When Madonna was playing at Wembley Arena, Petter happened to be in town to see her live. Brian, who lived nearby, offered Petter a place to stay to save on hotel costs. Brian described this as a “gamble,” but it clearly paid off as they went on to build a life together and create many happy memories before Petter’s untimely death.

When Brian and Petter first met, they were leading very different lives. Brian was working long hours as the Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police at New Scotland Yard, while Petter was working as an engineer in Oslo. Despite the challenges of a long-distance relationship, they were clearly devoted to each other and managed to make it work.

While they went on to build a life together and get married, Brian and Petter often kept their relationship out of the media spotlight. They preferred to focus on their love for each other and enjoy their time together away from the glare of public attention.

  • Yep, Brighton is the gayest place in the UK

Yep, Brighton is the gayest place in the UK

According to the census, individuals residing in the Essex district were found to be six times less inclined towards identifying as gay as compared to those residing in the East Sussex city.

Where is the gay capital of England?

Brighton and Hove, long considered the unofficial gay capital of England, can now proudly wear the official crown. According to the 2021 census, one in 10 people aged over 16 in the city identified themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or “other sexual orientation”.

Around 10% of Brighton’s overall population identifies as gay, lesbian or bisexual.

This figure matches the estimates made decades ago based on the research of Alfred Kinsey, a US professor from the 1940s who argued that homosexuality was far more prevalent than official sources acknowledged.

    Gay culture in Brighton

Culture is likely to play a significant role in the differing levels of LGB+ identification between Rochford and Brighton. Unlike Rochford, Brighton has a long-standing history of pioneering gay rights, from its gay bars and clubs to its annual Pride festival. The city recently bid farewell to George Montague, a 98-year-old gay rights campaigner who had been fighting for decades. Brighton and Hove City Council has a range of initiatives to support the LGBT+ community, including an LGBT workers’ forum, “my pronouns” campaign, and an LGBT helpline.

According to gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, Brighton’s vibrant LGBT+ community, extensive support organizations, and liberal public attitudes make it an attractive place for LGBT+ individuals to live. People feel safe and comfortable in Brighton, and they feel more able to be out and visible. However, Tatchell acknowledges that despite the generally gay-friendly atmosphere, there is still a problem with gay-bashing attacks. He said, ““Brighton has a huge amount of LGBT+ venues and community support organisations that makes it a very very attractive place for LGBT+ people to live,

“Public attitudes are more liberal than other parts of Britain so people feel safe and comfortable. They also feel more able to be out and visible. But this also makes them targets. Despite the generally more gay-friendly atmosphere, there is still a problem with gay-bashing attacks.”

Paul Kemp, managing director of Brighton and Hove Pride, said that the city has always been a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals who seek a community of like-minded spirits. Many LGBTQ+ individuals come to Brighton to study at the university and decide to stay due to its supportive and inclusive environment.

  • 10 terrible foods to eat if you’re bottoming tonight

Gonna get spicy tonight in the bedroom, then you might want to leave out some of these foods if you’re bottoming because they’re bound to make you feel uncomfortable.

However, some foods may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, gas, or bloating, which could make bottoming uncomfortable. Here are some foods that some people might want to avoid or limit if they plan to bottom:

    Bad foods for bottoming

Some foods are particularly bad if you’re planning on bottoming (having anal sex). Try and stay clear from the following foods on the day and the day before you plan to have anal sex.
    • Spicy foods: Spicy foods can cause irritation and inflammation in the digestive tract, which can lead to discomfort during anal sex.
    • Dairy products: Some people are lactose intolerant, which means they have difficulty digesting lactose, a sugar found in dairy products. This can cause bloating, gas, and diarrhoea, which can make bottoming uncomfortable.
    • Greasy or fatty foods: Greasy or fatty foods can slow down digestion, leading to bloating and gas.
    • Foods high in fibre: While fibre is important for a healthy diet, eating too much of it can cause bloating and gas, which can make bottoming uncomfortable.
    • Alcohol and caffeine: Both alcohol and caffeine can cause dehydration, which can lead to constipation or diarrhoea. They can also affect the body’s ability to relax, making it more difficult to bottom comfortably.
    • Processed foods: Processed foods can be high in sodium and other additives, which can cause bloating and water retention, making bottoming uncomfortable.
    • Beans and legumes: While beans and legumes are nutritious, they can also cause gas and bloating for some people.
    • Cruciferous vegetables: Vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts are high in fibre and can cause gas and bloating for some people.
    • High-sugar foods: Foods high in sugar can cause an imbalance in gut bacteria, leading to gas and bloating.
    • Red meat: Red meat can be difficult to digest, especially if it’s high in fat. This can lead to bloating and gas, making bottoming uncomfortable.

It’s important to note that everyone’s body is different, and what works for one person might not work for another. If you’re planning to bottom, it’s a good idea to listen to your body and avoid any foods that you know cause discomfort or digestive issues.

Additionally, practising good hygiene (like douching, give our handy how-to-douche a read here) and using plenty of lube can also help make bottoming more comfortable. Need a douche? Check out the range at our partner site THEGAYSHOP
