  • 6 Greatest Sex Scenes From Gay Cinema

6 Greatest Sex Scenes From Gay Cinema

Forget those porn movies – Gay characters are becoming more and more prominent in mainstream cinema.

Films that explore the relationships between same-sex couples are increasingly seen in the multiplexes as opposed to being the preserve of the art-house or independent cinema circuits. There have been a number of pivotal moments in cinema whereby films with wider appeal have either hinted at or graphically displayed on screen gay or lesbian sex. From Personal Best to The Crying Game, The Rocky Horror Show to My Beautiful Laundrette, there is a welcome increase in both serious and light-hearted looks at the gay community. But with it, comes an increase in sex scenes, which can arouse you, make you reflect or fill you with romance. Here are six of the best, which, for a variety of reasons, are ones which are of note.

    6. Threesome

Intellectual Eddie (Josh Charles) is in the closet. Heading to college, he finds himself sharing a dorm with Stuart (Stephen Baldwin), a jock and serial womaniser. But due to an administrative error, their other roommate is Alex (Lara Flynn Boyle), a feisty young woman who is down as a male on the college records. But the complications start as they grow closer. Stuart loves Alex and wants sex with her. Alex loves Eddie and wants sex with him. And Eddie loves Stuart, hiding his desires to have sex with him and secretly checking him out at every opportunity. The three of them become firm friends and, of course, sex gets in the way. Until that is, they think that they have found the perfect solution….

But will the three of them end up in a ménage a Trois and will Eddie ever get his desires towards Stuart fulfilled? A mostly shirtless, muscular Baldwin brother plays the all-American depraved teen with lustful desires towards his female roommate, but who gets more of an education at college than he probably imagined when he filled out his application.

    5. Shelter

Zack is an aspiring artist trapped in a life of supporting his dysfunctional family and caring for his nephew, until his best friend’s gay brother, Shaun (Brad Rowe), comes back from L.A. As the two hang out and surf together their feelings for each other develop among the waves, surfboards and wetsuits. Not only do they hide their relationship for Zack’s benefit, who is struggling with his new found feelings, Shaun encourages Zack to take control of his life and follow his ambitions. But not before the two of them have engaged in plenty of bedroom activities.

If a hunky surfer, a semi-twink and lots of manly dudes in wetsuits is your thing, then this film may be for you. The beautiful boys find time to kiss, cuddle and caress each other in the California sun, the highlight of this film is an early morning romp whereby the boys nearly get caught by their brother and best friend.

    4. Wild Things

In this steamy thriller, two girls accuse a high school counsellor of raping them in a convoluted extortion plot. But as the key players in the plan find themselves increasingly mistrusting of the others, Suzie Marie Toller (played by Neve Cambell) attacks Kelly Lanier Van Ryan (Denise Richards) in a swimming pool, but the attack turns to lust as the two girls kiss passionately and undress each other, whilst all the time being observed and filmed by a police officer hiding in the undergrowth.

The swimming pool scene is one example of how this film strides out where other erotic thrillers (Basic Instinct, Showgirls) feared to tread by showing erotic lesbian sex scenes with partially nude Hollywood starlets. After watching this, it becomes clear why they stayed in the pool to cool off.

    3. Beautiful Thing

Teenage life on a London council estate is difficult for Jamie, who has a crush on his handsome classmate and neighbour, Ste (played by the very beautiful Scott Neal). In Beautiful Thing, Ste has his own problems with his dysfunctional family and alcoholic father. Love slowly blossoms between the two boys as they deal with an interfering neighbour, visit their first gay bar and grow into their sexuality.

The catalyst for all of this is when Ste is beaten by his father and spends the night at Jamie’s. Sleeping “top to toe”, Jamie starts by massaging Ste’s bruised body, but this turns into much more as the two boys end up kissing and subsequently sleeping together. But what makes this scene so special is that it is a beautifully tender moment which takes you back to your first love and maybe even reminds you of those fledgeling fumbles you once had.

    2. Bound

In this film noir fuelled movie, Violet (Jennifer Tilley) wishes to escape her violent criminal boyfriend and so engages in a clandestine affair with a sexually charged ex-con, Corky (Gina Gershon) and the two of them plan to rip off $2 million of mob money. Double-crossing, violent criminals and underhand tactics cannot detract from the explicit sexual aspects of this film.

The two women are beautiful and their first encounter is a breathy, whispered and intimate one. Whoever thought that showing someone your tattoo would lead to such an erotic encounter? But their second encounter is why this film makes the list. As the camera pans around the two women, their graphic intimacy is clearly shown and the passion of the two women for each other really shows.

More visually detailed than your usual mainstream Hollywood film, this was a groundbreaking film at the time and settles in a high position in this list.

    1. Brokeback Mountain

Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two Cowboys who find themselves with only each other for company whilst working high up on the slopes of Brokeback Mountain. With nothing but a supply of whisky and each other, they find a way to pass the time, leading to some fairly rough initial intimacy and huge feelings of guilt. But as the years go by, they share something more special than either of them ever anticipated and what starts off as a drunken fumble becomes a deep love for each other, although Ennis struggles more with it than Jack, who wants them to be together.

Who could resist Heath ledger and Jake Gyllenhall dressed as cowboys and engaging in some manly fun? Their first encounter in the tent, involving some spit and a few minutes of grunting is perhaps the best-known sex scene in the film, despite a number of other more romantic encounters as the years go by. But the film makes the list not for this scene or for the tantalising prospect of the two leads in various states of undress, but for the most romantic scene whereby, on a fishing trip, Ennis approaches Jack and simply folds his arms around him in an emotional embrace. Who says that romance is dead?

  • COLUMN | Meat (and Two Veg) is Murder

The modern world is all about the ‘foodie’. We’re all supposed to be happily salivating over organic cuts of meat, freshly baked soda bread and imported delicacies. I’m a little out of kilter with this trend.

I’m actually not very interested in food. It bores me. Eating can be a pain. It interrupts what you’re doing and means you have to cook which in turn means that your nice clean kitchen gets all grubby which is no good at all. Ovens are great places to keep books. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a nice meal out (mainly for the people watching) and if you want to cook for me then that’s fine and dandy but if it was a choice between food or books or cigarettes then the food would always lose. I tend to watch TV whilst I eat. I turn on the TV, start to eat and the minute the meal ends, I turn it back off. It stops me having to think about it. I can happily eat the same food every day without getting too bored. It’s like scratching an itch.

A friend once told me that she lay in bed and dreamt of food. She said that her first thought on waking was “What can I eat today?” I find this hard to understand. I hate the feeling when you over eat. That sluggish torpor and the feeling of being full to the neck is not my idea of fun. It’s a torture.

I don’t really like cooking much. It’s tedious. As for baking, they sell cakes in shops. Why waste your time? You could be reading a good book.

As a child I hated to eat. I hated meat, salad and vegetables. Unluckily for me, I had parents who were as snobbish as Margot and Jerry Leadbetter but with the horticultural skills of Tom and Barbara Good (from the 1970’s sitcom “The Good Life”, if you don’t recognise the allusion). My parents had a huge allotment and grew huge quantities of fresh vegetables which we would have to eat all year round. They sowed, picked, blanched and froze and we had to help. They also loved to cook much more than I hated to eat. I compromised a little and would eat peas and carrots and the occasional runner bean. This wasn’t enough of a compromise and I spent many hours sitting in a chair, not allowed to leave the table or lay down my cutlery until I ate one Brussel sprout or a sprig of broccoli. I was stubborn enough but my mum was the grand mistress of stubborn. Meal times were a tense battle which I usually lost.

I devised a few tricks. Firstly: the dog-friend. He was my food ally and was a canine dustbin. He’d eat anything. I’d try and lure him into position under the table and artfully flick half my dinner into his waiting jaw. He suffered a lot of wind due to his varied diet. Secondly: the swallowing trick. With enough gravy or sauce applied liberally I soon mastered the technique of swallowing most foods. I worked up from peas and eventually was at the point where I could swallow a sprout without it touching my tongue. I still hate sprouts. They were invented by Satan but I do suspect that this technique may have come in handy in other ways too in later life. Thirdly: the pocket game. With a tissue laid on my lap, I would secrete food under the table and stuff it into my pocket, consigning it to a watery grave down the toilet as soon as the meal ended.

I ate so little that eventually I was allowed to have a side plate instead of a dinner plate and no one worried about it. I wasn’t anorexic. I just didn’t like eating much. I expect if it had been any later in time than the 70s and 80s I’d have been admitted to a clinic and tube fed whilst being made to talk about my fear of sexual intimacy. Luckily, I evaded that.

I did like sweets. I’d line up a pile of dolly mixtures and play my favourite game. This was called “Mummy” and involved scoffing a load of sweets which represented my pills. I’d pop them one by one as I held aloft a little glass of dandelion and burdock and a candy cigarette and feel grown up. I would inhale deeply and sigh and pop another “pill” with a swig of my “sherry”.

It wasn’t too much of a leap for a teenage food hater to become a vegetarian. A love of “The Smiths” gave me a fantastic idea. Not eating meat was cool and trendy and would annoy my parents to the highest degree. Every teenager’s dream, I think. I recall a Christmas dinner as I smugly nibbled a cheese and onion quiche, aged 14, whilst my parents looked on and frowned. I soon got bored of it, though and was back eating meat.

As I got older, I started to enjoy food a bit more but on leaving home and moving in with my first partner, I experienced real poverty for a time. We often had no money at all. I had a priority list: cigarettes came top. As long as I had cigarettes I could happily live on Happy Shopper biscuits and bread.

I made a terrible mistake in 2004. I was watching TV and flicked through the channels onto a program on BBC2 about abattoirs. It was repulsive. I cringed as I watched but couldn’t turn it off. The next few days I found eating meat a weird experience. I couldn’t get it out of my mind that it was a corpse I was eating. I felt sick. It rolled around my mouth, sticking there and I couldn’t swallow. I gave up meat. It wasn’t high moral principles that stopped me eating meat but pure over thinking and subsequent disgust.

I’m still a vegetarian now although I had a brief lapse in 2007. It was alcohol related and involved a plate of chicken nuggets which I fell face first into. There’s no meat in a chicken nugget though, really, so it’s all OK.

  • 5 things you need to wear this spring

As Spring tries to make an appearance, and in the wake of Fashion Weeks across the world, thoughts are turned to what we should be scouring the high-street for this season.

    4589182024

Spring can be a difficult season to dress for, that’s why searching for those key transitional pieces is so important. With the weather being so unpredictable, a mac or lightweight jacket should be an essential in every gentleman’s wardrobe. For me it’s always got to be the classic trench. Every year I do the same search for light- weight jacket and I nearly always come back to the same thing. It’s such a versatile jacket. You can wear it over a suit for work or with a pair of jeans and shirt and jumper combination for a weekend in the city. This year Burberry Prorsum updated this classic with some amazing metallic fabrics. For those who can afford Burberry I would strongly advise a purchase. Metallics are a huge trend this year, but it’s not for the faint hearted. Pulling off this look can be daunting but for those who are brave enough inject some springtime excitement to an outfit, go for it. Try layering a metallic shirt with a plain round-neck jumper for a more casual ‘day-look’ or a smart jacket for a night out. For those who are still unsure about embracing this trend, then look for at accessories. A metallic satchel is a great statement, and shoes are another brilliant entry into this magpie world.

    4589182299

Strong, graphic, geometric prints are another hot trend this season. This is a great trend, and very wearable. High-street stores are taking inspiration from Jonathan Saunders and Jill Sanders collections from LFW and making this trend an affordable fashion statement for spring. Brilliant, bold colours make this trend perfect for this time of year, adding light to your wardrobe to contrast the more subtle colours of Winter. For the more conservative amongst you, go for a tie or pocket square to add a geometric element to your outfit. Ties and bow ties are an incredible, inexpensive way of exploring all the trends this season has to offer. We’ve seen prints in both full colour and monochromatic tones, both are fantastic. Combine either with a strong coloured pair of chinos, or shorts in one of this season key colours for an effortlessly cool look. For the fashion forward out there, there is another option. Marni is showing some spectacular tailoring using geometry inspired weaves. It’s an alternative to the more traditional checks and woven fabrics that are associated with tailoring. Pair a Marni suit with the new Nike trainers for an ‘the moment’ stylish ensemble.

    4589182355

Worn, by the likes of Reggie Yates and Russell Tovey, camouflage has taken the fashion world by storm. Introduced last year it has stood the test of time and returned this season with no sign of fading. There are no excuses for not owning something from this trend. There is so much variety in the way it can be worn. From a full camouflage outfit reminiscent of Matt Damon, in Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan from 1998, to something as simple as a pair of socks. It’s very versatile and gives a masculine feel to any outfit. If it still doesn’t get you excited, try one of the great colour variations that have emerged this spring. It’s no longer just about the green and brown tones, but in blue and grey and pink and purple.

  • HOTEL REVIEW | The Wensleydale Heifer

    ★★★★★ | The Wensleydale Heifer

They say no-one expects the Spanish Inquisition. They would probably also not expect a rather splendid fish restaurant and boutique hotel in the landlocked Yorkshire Dales.

Nestling in the ample bosom of the picturesque Dales, the Wensleydale Heifer is admittedly off the beaten path, situated in the tiny village of West Witton, but it’s well worth the drive to experience what is one of the finest dining experiences my partner and I have had in a long time.

The hotel itself comprises a number of themed bedrooms all playfully but tastefully decorated. We had the Whiskey Room for our night’s stay, which was pleasantly warm and inviting, incorporating distillery memorabilia around the walls with tartans and a wee dram of complimentary whiskey which greeted us on arrival (not a great whiskey fan I instead devoured the marvellous complimentary home made cookie and pondered what delights the people in the next door Chocolate Room were enjoying. Would they ever leave the room?)

Dinner was in the fish restaurant after making our menu selections in the informal warmth of the lounge. A nice touch when we reached the table was the two small hors d’oeuvres to whet our appetites. Service was good and what they very occasionally lacked in professional finesse they made up for in attentiveness.

My starter was Japanese panko crusted goats cheese fritters with jam, pine nuts and rocket salad. My partner had Whitby crab, gravalax, potato, shallot and chive tian, salmon, pink grapefruit vinaigrette and salad. Both were excellent, well presented with a nice contrast in taste. For mains I had tarragon and white truffle crusted hake with parmesan and rocket risotto and shallots and my partner had Roast Cornish turbot fillet, tagliatelle of Venus clams and brown shrimp, white wine and garlic fresh pea shoots and pea oil. We loved both. You could tell that this is a restaurant that loves its fish. The wine and garlic cream gave the latter a nice body without it being too heavy and both mains were excellently presented with lovely flavours. The hake was fresh and though it’s very easy to over serve risotto, they got the quantity just right.

Looking forward to dessert I plumped for the ice cream brownie and my partner the stem ginger parfait, both of which were very good.

After retiring for the night we had the English breakfast that though didn’t quite match the fine dining of the night before, was still very welcome.

Overall The Heifer is highly recommended whether you fancy a few days retreat in exclusive and quirky surroundings or just booking a classy meal out. Even if you don’t think you’re a fish fan you can’t fail to be bowled over by the combination of flavours and styles in each dish which, combined with a stylish contemporary setting and excellent accommodation should put it on every foodie’s menu.

  • OP ED | Is Prostitution The Last Taboo?

This month’s issue is the Vice Issue and, if I appear to have been quiet for a while, it’s because I’ve been away indulging my passion for sunbathing in Cape Town (probably a vice) and my addiction to chocolate over Easter (definitely a vice).

I was also taking a holiday from my main job, which some would no doubt claim is the biggest vice of all. I work as a tantric masseur, which could well be considered the more legitimate end of prostitution (certainly there are many sites which will not accept a massage ad, which gives any indication that the massage might be sexually pleasurable), and before that, I worked as an escort.

It seems to me that, even in our more sexually charged world, a world that increasingly accepts sex as a part of life, prostitution is one of the last, great taboos. There are people out there selling all sorts of services, from cleaning to baby-sitting to dog walking, so, if you happen to be good at sex, then why not offer that as a service?

Presumably the reason prostitution is frowned on goes back to most religions viewing sex as a sin, but though more and more people would no longer subscribe to that opinion, prostitution, or selling sexual services, is still frowned upon. Are there double standards going on here? For instance, society still seems to have problems with women who view themselves as sexual beings. Why is it, for instance, that a man who has multiple sexual partners is considered a stud, but a woman a slut? Feminists, too, often have problems with women who admit to a high sex drive, and often refuse to believe that there are women who choose to work in the sex industry, even when confronted by someone like Dr Brooke Magnanti, the woman who created the blog Belle De Jour, which was, in turn, based on her experiences as a high-class call girl. Believe me, there are plenty of others out there, but they go unnoticed, whilst the media concentrates on the problems of trafficking, coercion and drugs.

This dichotomy exists in the gay world too. There are plenty of gay men out there, who spend their lives frequenting sex clubs and bars, having anonymous sex with multiple partners, often more than one in a single night, and that is accepted as just part of the gay scene. Many of these men are completely indiscriminate as to whom they end up having sex with, and yet they will look down their noses at anyone who chooses to accept payment for sex. “How can you have sex with someone you don’t fancy?” they will say, though they’d be perfectly happy to join in with a group session in a sex club, with scant regard as to who else was in the group. You can’t tell me they went through a strict vetting process beforehand.

When I first started escorting, it kept me very busy, and I might easily have had sex with 15 to 20 men in a single week. Yet a friend who once told me that I was the least promiscuous gay man he knew. He had a point. If I wasn’t working, I was, and still am, extremely choosy. Maybe it’s because it can too easily just seem like work, but I digress.

Now I know of many gay men, who have, at one time or another, worked as an escort. These men have perfectly normal day jobs, whether it be in IT, law or whatever, but of course they keep it completely secret. When asked, you would never be likely to hear them say, “Oh I work in IT, but I also do a bit of prostitution on the side.” Aside from the fact they’d likely get sacked, working as a prostitute or an escort still isn’t acceptable. Mind you, in the straight world, nor is sex outside of a stable relationship, which, come to think of it, could be one of the problems some heterosexual men still have with gay men.

Actually, rather than society becoming more comfortable with prostitution, the reverse is happening. At present there is a Bill before the Scottish Parliament, (brought by MSP Rhoda Grant) that would seek to follow the Swedish model by making it illegal to purchase sex. I believe they are also considering this model for the rest of the UK. This law seeks to make the client into a criminal. Rhoda Grant recently stated in the Glasgow Evening Times, “People that use prostitutes are people who would rape and abuse,” a statement that is utterly false and completely inflammatory. An article by sex worker, Laura Lee, in Independent Voices on Friday April 5th, seeks to refute these myths, but is anyone listening?

Closer to home, one will typically find, when talking about sex, that a gay man will say something along the lines of, “I’d never use an escort. I don’t have to.” The inference being, that they are too sexy, good looking, young or whatever for them to even consider the services of a sex worker. Well, let me tell you, there are many reasons a guy might choose to see an escort, and usually, it has very little to do with the way they look. Most are just average guys, the kind of guy you might have winked at in a bar, and some of the ones I’ve seen have been downright gorgeous. Admittedly, there are a few who look better with the lights out, but for the most part, they are just ordinary guys.

In Linda’s article, cited above, she gives a few examples of the kind of client she might see. Let me add a few more.

    1. He’s in a long-term relationship. He still loves his partner, but his partner doesn’t enjoy the same sort of sex he does. Seeing an escort is far safer than picking someone up on the internet or in a bar. His partner is far less likely to find out about it, and the escort is far less likely to turn into a bunny boiler.

    2. Maybe he’s disabled in some way. We do tend to forget the physical needs of the disabled, as if a disability should condemn someone to a life time of celibacy. One of my clients, a sweet and gentle man, had lost both his legs in an accident. Sex wasn’t easy for him, but it was possible and he still had needs. Much better to use the service of a professional.

    3. This is one of the most surprising, but it happens. A young guy, who wants someone with a bit of experience to each them a few things. I wrote an article about one such experience for my blog. Take a look

    4. The businessman in town for a couple of nights. He has a limited amount of time and doesn’t want to waste it hanging around in bars or trying to find someone on Grindr or Scruff (you know how time-consuming that can be). Answer, call an escort. Even better, make the booking before you arrive in town. You may be surprised to hear that many book in advance.

    5. Those who want to have sex with that particular escort; probably because they’ve seen him in a movie (escorting and porn often go together).

    6. Someone who wants to explore and indulge a particular fetish. Believe it or not, it can be safer to explore this with an escort, someone who has a website and umpteen ads on various sites, than someone who is a complete unknown.

Do we really wish to criminalise these men? Absolutely not, nor should the State be interfering in what is, after all, a transaction between two consenting adults. It’s my contention that the problems of trafficking, drugs and coercion could be more easily be dealt with by decriminalising and regulating the industry, rather than creating more bands of legislation and driving the industry further underground. It’s called the oldest profession in the world for a reason, and it’s time that our attitudes to both sex and the sex industry became more grown up.

  • New Zealand MP Gives Powerful Speech On Gay Marriage

New Zealand MP Maurice Williamson has delivered a powerful speech following the legalisation of gay marriage in the country.

Watch the video here of MP Williamson attacking any far fetched ideas that gay marriage would doom New Zealand in an amusing yet powerful speech.

‘We are not declaring nuclear war on a foreign state, we are not bringing a virus in that could wipe out our agriculture sector forever, we are allowing two people who love each other to have that recognised and I can’t see what’s wrong with that.’

‘I also sir had a Catholic priest tell me that I was supporting an unnatural act. I found that quite interesting coming from someone who’s taken an oath of celibacy for his entire life.’

  • Gay Marriage Now Legal In New Zealand

Early reports are coming through that Gay Marriage is now legal in New Zealand.

Reports coming through from Twitter reveal that politicians voted 77 for marriage equality and 44 against.

According to @MarriageEquality on Twitter, New Zealand is the 13th country in the world to legalise gay marriage.

Gay marriage is legal the following countries: Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Uruguay

The bill introduces marriage equality for all regardless of sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.

Meanwhile the hash tag #MarriageEquality overshadowed Margaret Thatcher’s hash tag #thatcherfuneral on Twitter. The former prime minister of the United Kingdom has her funeral today in London after dying a week ago from a stoke.

Margaret Thatcher was known for her divisive leadership and in terms of gay rights was the country’s premier, when the first anti-gay law in 100 years was enacted in the form of Section 28, which forbade the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality in schools in the UK.

  • DUNCAN JAMES | “Bi Now, Gay Later”

Duncan James made headlines in 2009 when he publicly came out as Bisexual, in an interview with the News Of The World, now it’s on his own terms as he talks to GT.

Talking to GT Duncan James said,
“I was 22 when I had my first gay experience…I’d become really good friends with this guy and then I looked at him dancing on stage one night and I realised I really liked him. A couple of months later we hooked up. But afterwards I had massive amounts of guilt; almost like wishing it’d never happened.”

Although Duncan is still sexually attracted to women, he admits his gay side is more prevalent. “I sill enjoy having sex with girls, I find women attractive. But over the years it’s been less and less relationships with girls. So I understand that saying, ‘Bi now, gay later’. But it’s 2013 and there’s nothing wrong in being open with your sexuality.”

With rivals like One Direction and The Wanted it’s going to take more than The Big Reunion to get back on top!

“Take That did the most amazing comeback ever but it’s gone a bit quiet for them and JLS are taking a break, One Direction and The wanted are doing massively well in the US. But there aren’t a lot of boybands around in the UK right now, so we think there’s a big gap and it’s a great time for us to come back.”

    Duncan on Eurovision

“As a country we don’t take it seriously and some said it was career suicide because it’s so political…But on the back of Eurovision we didn’t even have a second single or album. It was like a big whoopee cushion that deflated.”

GT is out now if you want to see a semi naked Duncan James – ooo er!

  • OP ED | When A Vice Becomes Something More Sinister

I imagine that we all have vices. In fact I wouldn’t believe someone if they told me that they didn’t have any. For some people smoking could be a vice. For others it could be the twenty cups of coffee they drink each day. As for me… well I’ve had many vices over the years and still do. On occasion those vices have developed into something more and this is what happened when one of them did.

On discovering alcohol at age fourteen I soon began drinking regularly as many teenagers do. I was a drunken state most weekends and by the age of eighteen I was consuming about ten triple vodka and Red Bulls each Friday and Saturday night. I would end up not being able to walk and getting into some serious scrapes. At the same time I was also going out during the week with ‘friends’ and drinking about ten pints of lager each night. It was those people who introduced me to a little pill called Ecstasy.

I was seventeen years old at the time and had a weekend job as well as going to school during the week. I wasn’t very popular due to being perceived to be gay. My only friends were other ‘freaks’ and I felt lost. I was desperate to be liked and to be popular. All I wanted in life was to be part of a cool crowd. One day that happened. A couple of lads I worked with, and looked up to, invited me out one evening. They said that I seemed alright and they wanted to show me what they get up to at night. The young homosexual in me was hoping that I would be getting some action as they were pretty hot, but actually it was all about drinking beer and shagging women. I wasn’t out to many people at that point and being desperate to fit in with people I thought were cool, I joined in with their nightly drinking sessions.

One night we went to a dodgy pub which is well known for drug dealing and taking. My friends went to speak to a guy who looked like a dealer and I guessed what was going on. I come from a council estate which is straight out of Shameless so deem myself to be quite clued up. It didn’t stop me saying no when a pill was offered to me though. I declined at first, but when one of my friends said “go on, be one of the lads”, that was it. All I had wanted was to be one of the lads and fit in. So I took it. The next night I took another. The night after that I took another one. And it went on like that. I knew that I was doing something wrong, but I thought that it was what I needed to do to have some cool friends.

As the months went by I was consuming an increasing amount of alcohol, taking a growing amount of pills, yet still going to school and my weekend job. It was beginning to take a toll on me though. I wasn’t doing as well as I had been at school and was making mistakes at work. I was beginning to look rougher and my personality was deteriorating. I had started to become reliant on Ecstasy because I felt it helped me get through life. It was no longer just about fitting in.

One night it all came to a head and it would turn out to be the last time I ever took a drug. I was at a club with my so called friends and I remember dancing to Missy Elliot. When the song finished I walked off the dance floor and the next thing I remember is being woken up in my friend’s garden. It wasn’t a simple waking up though; I was face down in a bag of chips and being kicked as I wasn’t waking up. I came around, got up and was helped into bed.

The next morning I realised that four hours were missing from the previous night. Between walking off the dance floor and being woken up in the garden, I had no idea what I did. To this day I still have no recollection of those four hours. My friends said that they had been looking for me and were worried as I had been “caning it”. I had consumed a lot of alcohol that night and I am unsure what else I took. I looked at my work shirt that I had worn that night and it had sick on it. I had to go to work that morning and buy a new shirt when I arrived. My manager looked at me with disgust and I felt disgusted in myself. It transpired that 23rd March 2002 would be my rock bottom date. I haven’t taken any drug since.

After that I stopped associating with the people I thought were friends. They weren’t cool and I didn’t belong to that kind of crowd. I reconnected with my ‘freak’ friends and I am still connected to them now. I am also comfortable with being an outcast and a freak myself. It took a long time to get there, but it all turned out alright in the end. As for vices, my main ones are chocolate and Haribo Tangfastics. Not good for the waistline, but better than other stuff I used to consume.

I’m not going to preach about how drugs are bad and you should just say no. As an adult you can make your own mind up. But if your vice is taking drugs, just keep a check on it. Don’t let it get out of control and ask yourself why you are doing it. I did it for all the wrong reasons and it really messed me up. Don’t let the same thing happen to you.
