    I had some reservations about Gayby. A lot of these ‘gay films’ are usually clichéd drivel, almost always, an unlikely relationship sparks and then it’s just an hour of plot-holes and bad acting.

    Jenn, a yoga instructor, and Matt, a comic book store worker, are best friends from college who are now single and in their 30’s. In agreement with a pact they made in their youth, the two decide to have a baby (“Gayby”) together, even though Jenn is straight and Matt is gay. Jenn’s grandmother set her up with a trust fund for if she ever had a child, so Jenn is confident that she and Matt will have the finances to have one. However, Jenn states that she wants to have a baby through natural conception, so the two begin awkwardly having sex.

    Gayby was something very different indeed. I found it to be relentlessly charming in every way, with just the perfect amount of drama peppered in. Superbly written and directed by relative newcomer Jonathon Lisecki, It had something that all these other films are missing… A great script.

    The awkwardness of the “Attempted Conception” scenes was genius, with just the perfect combination of one liners, curious glances and the various montages of penetration were just divinely cringe worthy.Possibly the stand out performance of the film is that of Jenn Harris. Harris plays the quintessential fag hag (Jen) to the devastatingly handsome Matthew Wilkas (Matt). Harris brings a depressive vibe into a relatively overused character, which is surprisingly, a breath of fresh air.

    Although it’s the supporting characters that steal the show, both fag and hag have terrifically bitchy henchmen as it were, the ‘femme-bear’ “Nelson” and the incredibly bitchy “Jamie” (Jack Ferver)

    By far the highlight of the film is the fabulous wannabe bear, Nelson, played brilliantly by writer and director Lisecki. The character of Nelson wasn’t particularly appealing to me at the beginning, then suddenly; the character soon manifests as the star of the show. Clearly Lisecki gave himself some of the best lines, yet you don’t really mind, seeing as he pulls them off in the most gorgeously sarcastic manner.

    Gayby’s plot isn’t really anything special; it is essentially a romantic comedy in disguise.

    It’s the characters that make the film stand out. They are multidimensional and most importantly they’re ‘real’.

    Uncompromisingly jovial, I would certainly recommend Gayby to anyone; it has buckets of charm, something that I find to be a rarity in gay cinema.

    The self-proclaimed queen of media Perez Hilton has announced that he has become a father.

    It is unclear at this stage who the baby boy’s mother is or the tiny babe’s name, but Hilton, did share a picture of himself and his new baby on his website, perezhilton.com.

  • Are We Ready To Dump LGBT Term?

    Pink Therapy has made a case for the LGBT term to be changed to “Gender and Sexual Diversity.” Are we ready as a community to change names?

    LGBT has been used since the 1990s to denote people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans. The acronym has grown, but still cannot contain the diversity of the people who are not straight and monogamous.

    According to their latest press release Pink Therapy say:

    LGBT ignores the true diversity of sexuality and gender. Pink Therapy believes GSD, Gender and Sexual Diversity, is a more inclusive label.

    LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender), and its extended forms (LGBTIQQA, or LGBT+) are exclusive of the great variety of people who don’t live ‘traditional’ lifestyles (e.g. heterosexual or monogamous).

    The term ‘GSD’, or Gender and Sexual Diversity, encompasses people from any lifestyle, sexual orientation or gender identity.

    Gender and sexuality exists in such a wide variety of forms, that LGBT fails to describe a large number of people. Easily recognisable groups, such as asexual and BDSM, are ignored by the classical acronym, but many people have identities which are an amalgam of different types, such as being bi-romantic, but homosexual, a member of the BDSM community, and a swinger.

    The result of this exclusion is both legal and practical. BDSM is legally considered by many psychiatrists as a ‘disorder’ in most countries, and perceived publicly as a perversion, despite all scientific evidence to the contrary. Couples who engage in a BDSM or kink relationship can and do lose their jobs and children if they are discovered.

    Not only that, couples in these often uncounted groups are not provided for by mainstream counselling services, due to a lack of awareness or concern. In recent research, Pink Therapy found 38% of their respondents identified as having a BDSM lifestyle and 48% of the heterosexuals identified as BDSMers who had very few places to resolve their relationship issues.

    Respecting how a person feels, and not how a person ‘should’ feel, has always been a central motivation for the Human Rights movement. GSD extends this basic right to people who are excluded by LGBT+.

    Pink Therapy advocates the new terminology in the hopes it will foster greater inclusivity.

  • Texas Teen Vows To Fight For Right To Wear Prom Dress

    Teenager Tony Zamazal from Texas has vowed to fight for the right to wear a dress to Prom.

    Tony Zamazal from Spring, Texas is fighting for the right to wear what she feels comfortable in for her High School Prom.

    However Zamazal ran into problems when he asked an assistant principal at Spring High School, who is in charge of the dress code for the prom. The student claims that the assistant principle gave him an immediate answer.

    According to KHOU:

    “He told me it just wasn’t in the dress code. [He said] women wore dresses, and men wore tuxedos,” explained Tony Zamazal.

    Zamazal expressed disappointment at the remark, but has vowed to make a stand.

    “If I do get to go as a woman, I will be ecstatic,” said Zamazal. “If I don’t, it would be devastating, because I put myself out there.”

    The Spring High senior says she doesn’t care what others think about him, as long as she gets to be herself.

    “It’s not okay to just tell people, they can’t be the way that they are. It’s not just a choice of the way you look,” added Zamazal. “It’s more of who you are.”

    A Spring Independent School District spokeswoman says there is a process through which Zamazal can fight this. It would begin with him taking his request to the principal of Spring High School.
