  • CLASSIC CAR REVIEW | Skoda Felicia Fun

Oh Felicia, Where The F***K Are We?

You wouldn’t necessary associate the word “fun” with Skoda. Well, certainly not in the 1980s. Despite a good record in rallying and great advertising, Skoda was stuck in the lower echelons of the new car world. Even in 1989 with the release of the front wheel drive Favorite it didn’t help much. Step in Volkswagen who by 1994 had the first new Skoda models under their guidance ready to emerge named after a drag queen from a movie out the same year (this isn’t actually true).

In 1998 Skoda needed some much-needed sex appeal added to the brand to entice the young and what better way than with a pick-up truck. That’s right a pick-up truck. Not just any old pick-up, though. Painted in bright yellow with darker yellow extremity add-ons, the Felicia Fun was born. To accentuate the pick-up vibe, it even had an integral bull bar moulded into the front bumper and a rear handle bar type non-effective rear spoiler. Even the alloy wheels were yellow. Now who hasn’t cried out that well-known quote from Pricilla Queen Of The Desert when they saw a Felicia? Despite it being based on a rugged pick-up the Fun is about as butch as Judge Rinder and just as crazy as his first dance on Strictly Come Dancing. You can’t help but fall for its cheeky charisma.

To add to the “fun” Skoda went above and beyond with the yellow trim inside too. You got a leather covered steering wheel, gear stick and gaiter, padded door inserts and a splatterings design on the seats. Remember this was all in a bright yellow leather material. And then if that wasn’t enough you also got four yellow dials on the fascia too. It’s all rather brash and crude while at the same time being immensely enjoyable. Dare l say it, a fun place to be in.

This still wasn’t enough. Skoda wanted to give the youngsters even more but what could they give? While a yellow truckman top was available, a yellow piss stained mattress in the back was not. What you got instead with your two-seater pick-up with wood slatted rear cargo area was a pull out rear bulkhead that would further reveal two more seats. At the time this was amazing, and it has never been replicated since. The Fun really was a one of a kind.

The brochure that accompanied the Fun was about as sexy as you could get without fornication actually happening in print. Two dudes in Hawaiian shirts enticing two pretty young gals. And then there was innuendo. “Open up for extra fun” was one slogan. “Two + two = fun” or a foursome in my mind. It was all fun fun fun and there was the sun too. Something the UK sort of lacks on most occasions. So keep it realistic and think grey skies and Billericay.

Like the crowned frog decal on the B-pillar that no one knows what it is supposed to mean, no one knew where the f**k Skoda were going with the Fun. At the rate it sold it outstripped demand of the 300 units originally sent to the UK. A further 300 were needed to meet the demands of the young. Rumour has it there were 601 in total imported to the UK. According to statistics, there are around 267 cars still on the road and 154 on SORN. Not bad for a commercial pick-up that has a tendency to rust violently anywhere around the rear bed area and sills.

Mechanically it is basic Skoda Felicia with a fuel injected 1600cc engine. In practice, it felt quite spirited and the drive surprisingly rattle free. Being one of Volkswagens engines it also means it has a pretty good reliability record.

Owner Matthew has owned Nessa for almost four years after seeing an advert on that well-known auction website and clicking the ‘buy it now’ tag. A trip to a farm in Wales revealed that the Fun was anything but. Instead, it was being used as a proper pick-up truck that wasn’t what it was designed for. The rear bed might have been full of wood but it wasn’t the wood that raises the pulse rate dressed in a Hawaiian shirt.

The drive home was eventful with a failed Lambda sensor and nearing home the back end decided that supporting itself was no longer an option and gave up. After being turned away by several garages which couldn’t see the potential to weld it up, Matthew finally found someone who in essence rebuilt the rear end. Sometimes having to fabricate parts no longer available.

Having returned it to the road and continuing the rolling restoration, Matthew continues, “It was always sure to turn heads! However, you do need to like yellow. It was a car I had fallen in love with as a young lad on my way to school, passing one every day thinking it was the coolest car I had seen. Knowing that Skoda’s weren’t cool I kept quiet. Now I get to drive my own and it still makes me smile every time I go out in her.”

By the end of my time with Felicia Fun l was sold on the whole idea. It makes so much sense. A two seat pick-up workhorse most of the time that could take four. And no one need get wet in the rain with a truckman top. Having tested several pick-ups lately, l thought there wasn’t much left for truck development in passenger carry overload lugging. I’ll tell you were Skoda are with this and that’s ahead of the game. Sadly no one does this kind of thing.

Thanks to Matthew for the time with the Fun.

From AIDS to PrEP: Love, Sex & HIV

If you met a moreish specimen of a man on Grindr, in Rupert St Bar or at a friend’s gatherette and there was immediate trouser-twitching, shimmies to the heart department and your thoughts turned towards naming your first pair French bulldogs – but then, after some time into this meet, said hottie informs you he’s HIV positive – do you know how you’d react?

Marking twenty years since life-saving HIV medication was introduced to the UK, Patrick Cash has penned a very real production that will send sparks to your neurons, pricking your nervous system: a trio of scenarios that are entwined together touching on the effects of HIV in the 80s up until the current day.

Alex (Denholm Spurr) – a Labrador puppy intermixed with a male cheerleader with obtuse understanding of the immune-attacking virus – struggles with the idea of being close to someone who’s positive, and barely has enough shrapnel to buy even the smallest tube of lube.  The out-of-work actor gets himself into a sticky situation with the truth.

Lack of knowledge inflames fear, but understanding can provoke the guardian in all of us.  Irene’s (Charly Flyte) journey nursing AIDS patients is moving and compelling.  Barney (Jonathan Blake – one of the first people to have been diagnosed with AIDS in the UK) learns to live with the deficient insight with HIV in the 80s – a convincing performance.

A Thunder Looper of emotions: stigma, humour, shame and love – some well-directed tandem acting by Luke Davies – a challenging subject to cover – executed well.

Two new dates at the King’s Head Theatre as part of their World AIDS Day weekend 20th and 21st November.

  • How not to be a douche when you have to dump your boyfriend

It’s a sad fact of life that all good things must come to an end and that includes relationships.

    CREDIT: (C) Lopolo Depositphotos

So if you’ve decided that time is up on your relationship we’ve got some suggestions on how not to make a pig’s ear out of the breakup process. Yes, it’s likely to hurt, and it’s probably going to get messy. So here’s ten tips on how not to be a douche when you dump someone.

    1) Is it really over?

Are you sure? Can it be fixed or perhaps, more importantly, is it worth fixing? If it is then maybe, you need to hash it out with your partner. Have an honest discussion about your feelings.

    2) Give an actual reason.

Don’t trot out that clichéd line, “It’s not you, it’s me”. Do you know how annoying that is? It means nothing and doesn’t help the other side have some closure. If there’s no other reason apart from the fact that you’ve fallen out of love, then say that. It can be harsh to say, but the reality of those words should hit home.

    3) Quit it and don’t go back.

ARRRRGHHH. Stop playing with my heart. If the relationship is over, make sure it’s over. Don’t give the impression that things could be fixed if they can’t be.

    4) Speak to a friend.

Chat with your friends about your plans before you make that break. They may have some insight or advice for you. Ultimately it’s your choice, but it doesn’t hurt to communicate what you’re feeling.

    5) Think about you, but also think about him.

Remember you did once love or intensely like this guy, so be nice. Be honest and be firm. THEGAYUK’s very own Jordan Lohan suggests: “Honour the love you once had for each other by being respectful to one another during the breakup process. Break ups don’t need to be messy if you choose for them not to be.”

    6) Don’t procrastinate.

If you’ve made your decision don’t hold off until the “right moment”. Even if that means you’re going to lose money, because you’ve got a holiday coming up or theatre tickets or whatever. If you own a house together or have a huge financial commitment together, then you might need to stay together for a bit longer, once you’ve broken up, until you can sort and separate your finances.

    7) Don’t feel sorry for him.

He’s not a child, and he doesn’t need your pity. Try not to feel guilty for your actions. You’re doing this for a reason, hopefully, to make you both better people! Keep focused.

    8) Set out some post-bofxit (post boyfriend) rules.

Set out some simple communication rules. Only texts, only emails – or whatever works for you. Don’t get drawn into long, complicated conversations. Keep it polite and professional.

    9) Let him blow.

He might have a few words to say after you tell him you’re done. If he gets angry, just listen. Don’t retaliate and don’t goad. If you feel physically threatened leave. It’s only natural that if the breakup comes as a shock that he might react in an angry way.

    10) Plan your exit.

Don’t rely on him to drive you home or lend you cash for a cab after breaking it off. Make sure you know what your exit plan is.

  • FILM REVIEW | Jack Reacher Never Go Back

FILM REVIEW | Jack Reacher Never Go Back

JACK REACHER NEVER GO BACK – Tom Cruise is back as the loner ex-military guy in the second Reacher film adapted from the 18th book in the hugely successful literary series.

    Jack Reacher review
    CREDIT: Paramount

Nutshell – Jack Reacher, the ultimate loner with skills, has to go on the run with a female military officer as they are both in the frame for some murders in a Government conspiracy. Jack finds out he has had a daughter all along, and then all hell breaks lose from Washington to New Orleans and the body count goes up.

    Running Time – 118 minutes; Certificate – 12A

Tagline – ‘Never Give In, Never Give Up, Never Go Back.’

The Gay UK Factor – Patrick Heusinger is an out and out f***able stud muffin. This Florida-born hunk would not be kicked out of bed by any gay man anywhere in the World, but he does not show as much flesh here as he did in Oscar-winning Black Swan… shame.

Cast – Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders who if we were straight would be our ideal woman, Aldis Hodge reprising from Jack Reacher One and Heusinger who has shot to poll position in our crowded wank bank.

Key Player – Lee Child who writes these books and delivers fully on the intrigue with regular doses of believable action and dialogue that would put Tarantino to shame. He even has a cameo here in the airport scene.

Budget – $60 Million which is cheap for a Cruise movie and a sequel at that, so it was in profit after just the first week and racing over the $100 million mark, so on with Jack Reacher 3. That is if Tom can be arsed to do it as he is not big on sequels this being the only one he has ever done outside of the Mission Impossibles.

Best Bit – 0.01 mins; So don’t be late as the opening unconnected set-up scene has such great dialogue it will settle you perfectly into a fun night at the flicks. You may have already seen this diner scene as it is one of the trailers put out for the movie.

Worst Bit – 1.38 mins; The big Afghanistan reveal is pretty predictable with some serious bloopers, but what is worse it is largely underwhelming. Next time let’s have a bigger back plot or story, please.

Little Secret – Cobie Smulders spent eight weeks learning several new martial arts so as she could and did do all her stunts in the film; she is one real feisty bitch. Cruise who always claims to do all his own stunts didn’t here, so that’s one for the girls. In the books, Reacher is 6.5″ of pure man muscle Tom Cruise is 5’7″ on a good day so nearer to a Hobbit than a US military tough guy and in his 50s too.

Further Viewing – Jack Reacher 1, The A-Team, Incredible Hulk, Dirty Harry, Law Abiding Citizen, Man on Fire, Deathwish’s 1 to 5 and basically anything featuring lone vigilantes a true Hollywood staple.

Any Good – This is so much better than the first film which we can hardly remember tbh, and there is a great prison escape scene which is pure Ethan Hunt . A lot is squeezed in here and there are a few scenes that are wasted we just wished the baddies’ story and plot could have been a bit bigger but it was made up for by casting such a f*ckable chief bad guy with hot henchmen too – we bet they get it on balls deep down the thug gym.

  • THEATRE REVIEW | Little Shop of Horrors – Sheffield Theatres and National Tour

★★★★| Life isn’t so great at the Mushnik Flower shop down on Skid Row. Mr Mushnik is on the verge of closing his shop, Audrey is dating a semi-sadist dentist and Seymour’s crush on Audrey is going nowhere. But with the arrival of a strange and interesting new plant, things start to change, especially when Seymour realises that the plant, Audrey II, has a taste for human blood. As things start to look up at the flower shop, Audrey II gets bigger and bigger, as does the list of missing people.

Photo Credit – Matt Martin Photography

Written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, the songwriting partnership behind some of the biggest Disney films, including The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors crams in the musical numbers, including “Somewhere That’s Green”, “Suddenly Seymour” and the title track “Little Shop of Horrors”. With a flavour of do-wop, funk and Motown running through it (even including a down on their luck version of The Supremes); and a bouncy and animated feel to the whole thing, this show is tremendous, kooky fun.

Sam Lupton excelled as Seymour, with a strong, natural vocal performance and a geeky clumsiness; as did Stephanie Clift as Audrey, bringing out the optimistic side of her character whilst maintain her vulnerability. The two leads gel together perfectly, especially with their show-stopping rendition of “Suddenly Seymour” and they are an absolute delight to watch. Romantic leads as good as these two are few and far between. Rounding off the main cast was Rhydian, who played the “slightly” manic dentist, Orin, with enough gusto to keep it his performance just on the right side of caricature, and with his strong operatic voice lending itself to his big number very well. However, the star of the show was Audrey II, the giant plant, who grows and grows and becomes more animated as the story progresses.

This touring production boasts a thoroughly detailed and well-designed set, with a cartoonish feel and an eye for detail. Add to that some clear, crisp and perfectly balanced audio, an effective lighting design and an all-round top notch cast and you have an impressive show which is highly polished.

Little Shop of Horrors has gained a cult following over the years and it is easy to see why. At the heart of it is a love story about a guy who will do anything to get the girl of his dreams. The songs are catchy and feel instantly familiar, the story is undemanding, and the script has plenty of moments to make you laugh.

With a healthy nod to 1950’s B-Movies and a musical mish-mash of styles with everything from Motown to Yiddish Folk Music thrown in there, Little Shop of Horrors is a cracking musical comedy which is pure escapist fun.

Little Shop of Horrors is currently on national tour and details can be found on their website at www.littleshopuktour.com. The show was reviewed at Sheffield Theatres, whose upcoming production of Everyone’s Talking About Jamie opens soon (https://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/everybodystalking-jamie)

Australian senates puts a stopper on gay marriage vote

The public vote on whether gay couples are able to marry has been stopped by the Australian senate in a move being celebrated by gay marriage supporters.

Austraila’s government’s proposal to hold a public vote on making same-sex marriage legal has been defeated in the upper house of parliament. Same-sex marriage is not currently legal in any of Austrailia’s states. Civil partnership or registered relationships are available in most of Austrailia’s states. Those relationships, however, are not considered marriages under federal law.

Latest opinion polls show that most Australians support gay marriage.

Instead of a public vote, the upper house has suggested that parliament itself will make the decision. It’s a decision that looks to be shelved until the next term of parliament.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is a supporter of same-sex marriage but is said to be “reluctant” to allow his Liberal party a free vote. The opposition, Labor party, announced that it would not support the bill, which will make passing a same-sex marriage law very difficult.

    Gay guys kissing, gay marriage
Portrait of a loving gay male couple on their wedding day.

According to the BBC Attorney-General George Brandis accused the Labor Party of “playing politics with gay people’s lives”. He said,

“A vote against this bill is a vote against marriage equality,”

“Those who claim to believe in marriage equality, but nevertheless, for their own cynical, game-playing reasons, are determined to vote against it, should hang their heads in shame.”

Same-sex marriage campaigners widely support this move, who would prefer the issue to be decided in parliament rather than leaving the decision to a public vote.

  • THEATRE REVIEW | Peter Pan Goes Wrong

★★★★ | Peter Pan Goes Wrong

If you’re a fan of farce, then this genius gem will slap you round the head, crack your ribs from laughter and leave you with a weaken bladder.

The Mischief Theatre Company are changing the face of comedy in the West End. They already have The Play That Goes Wrong and The Comedy About A Bank Robbery and now they’ve brought back their Christmas pudding, Peter Pan Goes Wrong. They’ve tapped into something that the West End has been missing for a long time. They’re giving us what we need. A laugh and lots of them.

In these politically trying times of neverending referendum headlines, a plummeting currency, a US Presidency election that makes even EastEnders look dull, and don’t even get us started with how Brexit is going to affect us in Eurovision, this theatre company is like a lit candle next to a flammable costume. On Fire.

The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society are about to put on their Panto (oh no it’s not) and they’re nearly ready, but the audience has arrived for the first night and the show must go on, regardless if all the necessary health and safety checks have been made. The set has been improved for 2016, thanks to a cast buy in of £40,000 and they’ve splashed out on a revolving stage. All is set to be an incredible, critically acclaimed am-dram performance of the evergreen favourite of Peter Pan… Or is it?

The theatre’s electrics are on the blink, the sound recording cues are all wrong, the revolving stage has gone haywire, lines have not been learned, but that’s no barrier to this well-meaning band of merry actors. It’s hilarious.

Christmas has never been so funny. Even that time Dad tried to play charades in a full body cast.

This is exactly the pill the doctor ordered!
