    A 20-year-old man was left with serious injuries after being set alight in an apparent homophobic attack on Teeside.

    A young man on Teeside has been left with serious burns after being set alight in a suspected anti-gay attack early Wednesday morning.

    The 20-year-old required skin grafts and was treated at the North Tees University hospital.

    His legs were sprayed with aerosol and set alight.

    According to ITV.com he was set set upon by four men who questioned the victim about his sexuality as he walked through the Holy Trinity Church grounds in Stockton-on-Tees, near to Middlesbrough in the North east of England, at 3AM in the morning.

    One of the men, described as white, in his early 20s, short blonde hair and of medium build is alleged to have sprayed aerosol onto the victim’s legs before lighting the highly flammable liquid. He was wearing jogging bottoms and was topless.

    After setting his legs on fire the group ran away.

    The Cleveland police are looking for information from anyone in the area and should call 101.

     

  • 5 Things To Do Now You’ve Finished Your A-Levels.

    Now the hard work is over, here’s five things to remember to do once you’ve finished your A-Levels.

     

    1. Don’t be pressured into anything.

    When I was doing my A-Levels my tutors pressured me to go to university. I had no encouragement to find a job or an apprenticeship. I was not ready for university so I decided not to go, I was even called a fool by a teacher. If you don’t think university is right for you then don’t go. Remember, the same course will be available at a university for decades, however the right apprenticeship or dream job might be a one off.

    2. Find alternatives.

    It is unlikely to be rejected by a university and end up without an option. But if that eventuality does come around then be prepared. Apply for part-time and full-time jobs, apprenticeships, traineeships and anything else you can get your hands on that interests you. Perhaps even doing a year at a college will be good for you, make the most of free education. You can never have to many qualifications and experience.

    3. Never take something for the sake of it.

    Never go to university because you can. Go because you want to. It is the same with jobs, I made that mistake and it affected my mental and physical health. There is no feeling worse than going to work anxious and stressed and coming home exhausted and drained. The right people, places, and professions will all come around to you. Everyone has a purpose.

    4. Do what you enjoy.

    So what if you don’t want to go to university with your friends, you can stay in contact. I was one of a handful of people from my year who didn’t go to university and I am in a much better position than some. I have a strong friendship circle and have a good lifestyle. If your passion is photography then pursue it. Go to university and study it and get that degree. If that is not for you, get a job to fund your adventure (photography can be very expensive!) and make the most of your free time.

    5. Everything will fall into place.

    Take it from me. I left after my a-levels not wanting to go to university, I was called a fool by teachers and left a few people confused. I took a job I hated hoping I could make something of it. My biggest mistake was taking a job I didn’t love. Pair that with some stressful life experiences and you get some mental and physical health issues! It worked out in the end. I was offered an apprenticeship with a photographers studio in London. I had never been happier than the day I handed in my notice knowing in a weeks time I would be on the path to my personal happiness. And to this day, I have never loved doing something so much. I’ve always wanted to make my career something I loved. And now I can.

    Here’s to your future. Whatever path you choose, make it the right one for you. Do what you love and you will love what you do.

  • NICE attacker reportedly “bisexual” after using gay hook up apps

    The attacker who killed 84 and injured 202 others, was allegedly “bisexual” according to reports after gay hook up apps were found on his phone.

    Tunisian born, French National, Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel killed 84 people and injured 202 more in the city of Nice last Thursday when he ploughed a hired truck into crowds of revellers celebrating Bastille Day on the French Rivera.

    The attack happened just a month after the gun attack on a gay night club in Orlando.

    According to a number of reports, the 31-year-old attacker had used gay hook up apps on his phone before his own death, when the city’s police shot him at the end of the rampage.

    Although no evidence has been found to suggest that Lahouaiej-Bouhlel committed the massacre on behalf of the Islamic State, (ISIS), the terror organisation claimed the attack as theirs, saying that he was a “soldier” for their cause.

    According to leaked reports, investigators found Lahouaiej-Bouhlel’s phone to have gay and straight hook up and dating apps installed, with a number of topless selfies.

    The Daily Mail have reported that one of Lahouaiej-Bouhlel’s lovers was a 73-year-old man.

    ISIS have zero tolerance for gay and bisexual men. Men who are found to be having homosexual relationships are most often executed. They are usually thrown off a multi-storey building in front of a crowd, who then stone the victim to death if he has survived the fall.

    Lahouaiej-Bouhlel’s family confirmed that he was not particularly religious saying that he often ate pork, got drunk regularly and did not observe Ramadam. French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said that investigators were working on the assumption that he had been radicalized very recently and quickly.

    The attack in Nice is the third terrorist event in France in 18 months.

    The first of which was the attack on the Charlie Hebdo magazine offices, the second was in a supermarket two days later, both in Paris – and then in November when 130 people were murdered in coordinated attacks across the French capital.

    THE NICE GUYS – Bad cop, meaner sidekick in 70s set LA based film noir mystery thriller … and boy is it funny.

    Nutshell – Ryan Gosling’s ex-cop bumps into Russell Crowe’s hard case alcoholic hard nut investigator in a buddy movie where they simply hate each other. There is a dead porn star called Misty Mountains a femme fatale with a problem that goes right to the top. Slapstick, action, plot twists all laced with the Seventies feel of a Blaxpotation movie and Boogie Nights. The music is great, the story superb and the laughs between the two leads are plentiful.

    Time – 116 mins; Certificate – 15

    Tagline – ‘Nice Pair….They’re not that nice’.

    THE GAY UK FACTOR – Two of the sexiest men alive Gosling and Crowe going full mano et mano for the duration. This is masculine men ripping on each other and beating one another up rather than off for the duration. If you like either of these two guys you will truly love this and the film is about the porn industry too.

    Cast – Russell and Ryan, Angourie Rice and the gorgeous Kim Basinger.

    Key Player – Shane Black the director. A true pet project from the Iron Man director and writer of all the Lethal Weapon films, The Last Boy Scout and Last Action Hero. This guy knows buddy films as he in effect invented them and this is his masterpiece of the genre.

    Budget – A relatively modest $50 Million with stars of this calibre but period films always cost a lot so that money would be quickly mopped up. No problem as it got into profit in under two weeks and there is a lot more money on the way for this one.

    Best Bit – 1.05 mins; The secret is the interplay between the two leads and it is best shown in a comedy masterclass inside a toilet closet.

    Worst Bit – 1.10 mins; The unnecessary dream sequences the first one leading to a car crash just don’t fit with the films tone – who needs giant bee’s etc ?

    Little Secret – The project was initially proposed as a TV series but was re-tooled as a film after the pilot seemed to be going nowhere – good decision.

    Movie Mistake – As with all period pieces there are so many – both the Earth Wind & Fire songs in the club were not released when the movie was set and the song “Get Down On It” was 5 years later. Posters for Blondie who weren’t even formed then and TV shows and films such as London Calling did not exist in 1977 when this was set.
    Further Viewing – Lethal Weapons 1 through 4, Hot Fuzz, Men In Black, Hollywood Homicide, In Bruges and most of all the Rush Hour series.

    Any Good – This is pure cinema marmite if you like the tone it will be one of your favourites of the year if not you will just enjoy it as a decent well acted comedy thriller..

    Rating – 67/100 (67th out of the last 100 films reviewed with 1 being best and 100 being a damp squib).

  • CAR REVIEW | Jeep Cherokee M-Jet 11 Limited

    WOW. That’s how I will start the review for the new Jeep Cherokee. It has a lot of visual impact. There are shapes within shapes and then there are questionable things you point at. Then you wonder where the headlights are? They are not quite in the place you would expect them to be. They are thankfully there and present and on the front. They say it has a fresh and aggressive look. It’s not that aggressive. Fact is, the front is pedestrian hitting friendly and slung low. Quite the opposite.

    The LGBT community is known for standing out from the crowd so this car really does feel at home with me. I spent almost 9 hours behind the wheel of this Cherokee in its Limited spec and it was a nice place to be. Those hours ended up feeling quite effortless. It is loaded from bumper to bumper with goodies, it has driver aids and a less wobbly ride than you would expect.

    I don’t think anyone would have thought this would ever be said about an American car but with the help of Fiat, the Americans have finally made a vehicle worthy of Europe and the UK. It’s not brash and it doesn’t beep at you for random to no significant reasons. Always an annoyance in an American car.

    It all sounds good so you’d expect me to keep enthusing about it but I’ll briefly stop here. Some of those driver aids are a bit much. The Cherokee shares platform software as fitted to the Renegade and I don’t know if it was because the Cherokee is a bigger car, but when the lane assist kicks in during lane changes on the motorway it fights with a firm tug. Indicate and the system is switched off. It caught me out several times.

    Don’t get me started on the door mirrors. They are good in their operation. They contain blind spot indicators that proved useful. What they don’t do however is fold in when on the move! Anything more than 10mph and they fold open. A vehicle of this size and with off-road potential needs to have retractable mirrors on the move. Replacements are not cheap.

    That’s my moaning done. The rest of the Jeep works very well. The engine, 2.2 turbo diesel, is smooth. A little harsh in a few places but nothing that makes you wince from feeling you are being mechanically unsympathetic. These noises are only heard with the windows open anyway. Outside the idle is subdued with a muted diesel clatter. It doesn’t sound like a tractor anymore.

    On the move, the 197bhp power unit mated to the 9-speed auto will propel you forward to 60mph in 8.5 seconds. It’s not the quickest I will grant you so you will be happy to know it suffers no turbo lag and that gearbox of 9 cogs will instantly select one to aid your momentum up to the claimed speed of 127mph I am sure.

    I did question if 9 gears were needed at all. Surely 5 or 6 are ample. Those 9 make for a seamless move through the gears. Apart from coming out of first, I struggled to detect the next change up. You soon learn when it will change up. At around 1500-2000rpm is when it happens. Sometimes however when you play with the manual override you discover it’s jumped 2 cogs. It’s best left to the box to do its thing and you concentrate on driving.

    Inside you are greeted by sumptuous leather-covered seats that offer heated or cold air options. The materials chosen are the best Jeep have fitted to almost any of their vehicles to date. Areas that require touching are made to feel like you have spent your money on something very special. The ergonomics felt right once you had learnt where some of the minor controls were. It took me some time to grasp the concept used for the front wipers. A multi-clicked turn on the stalk activated them from about 4 types of intermittent wiper to normal slow and fast. It was almost over 180-degree turn. In a hurry when you want them it’s a bit of a bind.

    Thankfully on board, this model has the advance brake assist. It worked well when a little hatchback decided to stop abruptly for no reason during a left-hand turn. It also has a neat feature to prevent you reversing into things by slamming on the brakes. Marvellous I said. It did make reversing a doodle and the Jeep went back without a scratch on the bumper.

    The infotainment system is one of the best I have used. The DAB radio is by far the easiest I have yet come across. Everything is easy to find and the display shows almost all and everything you could wish for. I just wished it was angled a little more towards the driver. So many manufacturers get this wrong.

    What I do question is its off-road ability. Unlike Cherokee’s of the past this one lacks a decent ascent and descent angle. The overhang from the front and rear bumpers being to low. Cherokee once displayed a great advert about the bridge missing so having to use the dried river bed. You’d want to get that bridge fixed with this one.

    If you can come to terms with the looks you would be happy with the Jeep. Some will point and stare, others will run and hide. I would give you the thumbs up. I enjoyed my time with it. For that week I had it, it did everything I wanted in a calm manner and did it effortlessly. And who cares what it looks like, from the driver’s seat you don’t have to look at it anyway.

  • Catholic Church in Scotland speaks in support of tackling homophobia in schools

    The Scottish Catholic Church has indicated that they are keen to tackle homophobia in schools.

    The Catholic Church in Scotland have spoken in support of dealing with homophobia in the classroom according to campaign group Time For Inclusive Education (TIE).

    TIE have been campaigning to introduce teacher training in Scottish classrooms to deal with and tackle homophobia in schools. The campaign has received the support of a host of cross party politicians; including Scottish Liberal Democrats leader Willie Rennie, co-convener of the Scottish Green Party Patrick Harvie and Conservative MSP Oliver Mundell.

    Speaking with the Sunday Herald this weekend, a spokeswoman from the Catholic Church in Scotland responded to the campaign’s calls, stating,

    “The Church is working with the Catholic Head Teacher association to ensure that all teachers have adequate knowledge, understanding and training and feel confident in addressing all aspects of relationships education, including LGBTI matters, in an appropriate and sensitive way.”

    Last month, party leaders pledged swift action on the group’s calls for LGBTI inclusive education during a parliamentary debate on which steps should be taken to advance equality following the Orlando massacre in June which left 49 dead and 53 others injured.

    During the session, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who has publicly supported the TIE campaign, restated her pledge to work with the campaigners during her term in government.

    She said,

    “I don’t want to live in a country, yet alone be First Minister of a country, where any young person has to feel that, somehow, because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, they are subject to judgement or made to feel in any way less than any other individual in our society. I have given a commitment to working with the campaign for inclusive education.”

    FBI find no evidence that Orlando massacre was a hate crime

    The FBI has said that it has found no evidence that the gun attack in Florida that killed 49 people in a gay club was a hate crime.

    Investigators in Orlando, Florida, have said that they’ve not found any evidence that the gun attack that left 49 dead and 53 injured was a hate crime or that the gunman chose the venue because it was a gay club.

    Speaking to the Washington Post a spokesperson for the FBI said,

    “While there can be no denying the significant impact on the gay community, the investigation hasn’t revealed that he targeted Pulse because it was a gay club.”

    On the 12th June Omar Mateen entered the gay club Pulse at around 2AM, and began shooting indiscriminately at the patrons. He killed 49 people and injured 53 more in a rampage that lasted several hours.

    After the attack there were a some reports that Mateen had downloaded and used several gay dating apps and had used them to lure victims to the clubs, however the FBI were unable to find any evidence to suggest that this was true.

    There was also speculation that Mateen was HIV positive, however an autopsy report, which hasn’t been released to the public reveals this to be an untrue rumour.

    This cute couple just got engaged in front of a 6000-strong audience at a Jess Glynne concert.

     

    On Thursday night, Lewis Nicholls gave his boyfriend, Darren, the ultimate surprise by organising with superstar Jess Glynne to proposed to him live on stage in front of 6000 people at her concert at the Eden Project.

    Lewis told THEGAYUK that he messaged Jess’s manager weeks before the concert to say how much he loved his boyfriend and wanted to show everyone how he felt and to see if he could propose to Darren live on stage.

    He said,

    “To my disbelief they replied and was so excited to make it happen.

    “During the concert we went on the stage (he thought it was just to watch a song) and then Jess came out and  got us out on stage and introduced us on stage to the crowd.”

     

    It was then Lewis got down on one knee and proposed – telling Darren, that he was the “happiest he had ever been.”

    “It was just amazing, the crowd were cheering so loud, chanting and showing so much love, we also got a photo with Jess on stage and the 6,000 people are behind us”

  • EDITORIAL | Why we’re not using MSM as substitute for gay or bisexual

    There’s been an increase in the usage of the initialism MSM and I’m stamping it out.

    The rise of the term MSM or Men Who Have Sex With Men is a fairly new trend and one I’m, as the editor of THEGAYUK is keen to stamp out.

    My first encounter with the term was in 2014, when a medical press release landed on my desk. At first, I didn’t really take much notice of it and we reported on the news as it was an important story about sexual health – something I’m very keen that THEGAYUK keeps its readers aware of (well the current government response seems woefully inadequate).

    However, the term stuck in my mind and the more I thought about it the more I hated it and felt it had to be dealt with – so I wrote back to the PR agency who sent the original press release and questioned them about it.

    The response was that the terms “gay” and “bisexual” weren’t reaching all the clients that they were hoping to reach – that “MSM” was more inclusive.

    I was told that there are many men, who have sex with men, who don’t consider themselves gay – or bisexual.

    To my mind, this is allowing closets and hiding spaces again after we have fought so hard to break these down. I’m passionate about living openly, honestly and being your true self and defining ourselves as a community. I appreciate that coming out as gay or bisexual can still be hard even in 2016, rebranding an entire community as MSM isn’t going to help it.

    If a man who is having sex with men, but doesn’t want to label himself as gay or bisexual, I doubt that he’ll gladly attach MSM as a label to himself. I’d argue that MSM actually is alienating those who have come out as gay or bisexual. It’s clunky, it’s purely sexual and it’s already a messaging service from Microsoft.

    I went to the readership and our writers to find out what they thought about the term – over 70 per cent of the readership who responded to our flash poll thought it was wrong to use and would prefer just plain old simple “gay” or “bisexual”.

    The word “gay” is under attack – it is being used in playgrounds, schools and workplaces as a pejorative term. People who are describing something stupid or dumb are calling it “gay” – and I’ve heard the argument that a word’s meaning can change over time, but when the word is a description of an entire community of people, who have, throughout history, been marginalised, criticised, ostracized and are in some part of the world still being criminalised for being gay or bisexual – I will not stand for the reduction, changing or erasure of the word gay. If you’re writing a press release to gay and bisexual men then write it.

    Use the words proudly.

    Being gay or bisexual is more than just sex. MSM makes it all about sex.

    Wouldn’t it be odd to start describing heterosexual people as an MWSWTOS (men and women who have sex with the opposite sex)? No, it isn’t happening and I feel that people would, quite rightly, have a problem with that term branded based solely on the type of sex you have?

    If the healthcare community wants to start engaging with the gay and bisexual community, I suggest they start treating us as humans.

    Stop assigning more letters and connect on a more human level. Being gay or bisexual isn’t offensive nor are those terms – so keep using them.
