12 LGBT+ celebs describe their coming out

Here are some of our favourite coming out stories and thoughts from the celebrities we’ve asked about their coming out experience.

Courtney Act, Drag Queen and TV Presenter

    CREDIT: Courtney Act

I grew up in suburban Brisbane, I didn’t really realise I was gay until I was 18 and in Sydney. I guess I remember having posters of the Spice Girls and having a crush on Leonardo DiCaprio, but I didn’t really attribute it to being gay because schoolyard slagging, like poofta and faggot seemed like something negative with those things, and I didn’t feel negative about who I was. So I never really attributed being gay to who I was, until Sydney.

My friends took me to Stonewall, which is a bar in Sydney, and I just remember like being, “hang on, all of these people are gay, this newspaper, this is a gay newspaper!” I just remember that very first night, it all just made sense, and I was like: Oh I get it! That night I had my first kiss and went home with my first boy all on one night – and they were two separate people!

My Mum and Dad came to Sydney and we were having dinner and I was talking about friends who were drag queens and boys with strange names like ‘Girl Craig’ and I remember my Mum asking, whether if one of them was my “special friend…” there was that awkward moment at the table, and Dad was like, “I’m going to get a drink…” and we all sort of stood up and left the table.

The next day we didn’t talk about it again. I remember calling my friend and like crying in the bathroom not knowing what to do and going to my friend’s house. I remember a time, struggling coming out to my parents and my own gender identity, I didn’t know whether I wanted to be the archetype ‘gay underwear model’ or be a woman because I was doing drag and I had a lot of people telling me that because I was so pretty I should take hormones and live as a woman and I know I felt very confused about everything. The next day, at the only job I’ve ever had in my life, like a ‘real’ job, I was working at an internet café and I went home for lunch, I guess I had a bottle of wine in the fridge, and I sat there eating lunch at home drinking a bottle of wine, watching Touched By An Angel on television, I just remember like crying, I guess it was inspired by Touched By An Angel, but the cry went much deeper than that. I remember it was just like howling. I sent Mum a text, this is the year 2000, so the advent of text was a new thing, and I texted I AM GAY. She wrote back, ‘That’s nice dear see you at dinner!’

So that night at dinner my Dad said that he had lived with 6 drag queens back in the 70s, I asked him to stop there; I felt that one revelation was enough for the night.

Jamie Lambert, Collabro singer and LGBT advocate

    Issue 20 Cover Jamie Lambert

Jamie came out via a tabloid newspaper after appearing in Britain’s Got Talent

I was already out as a person. I wasn’t a sort of person who was in the closet. I’ve been out for years. I never really came out. I was just me. The reason I felt like I had to do it was because I thought Dan (Wootton) would handle this perfectly.

I think The Sun was brilliant about it. I knew they would do a good story, so I thought they were the ones to go with. Let me tell you the issues I have. I think it’s very brave for people to come out via YouTube, but I do dream of a world where that isn’t necessary anymore.

The reason I did choose The Sun, I made them have the headline: My Parents Always Knew rather than Jamie From Collabro Comes Out, because I wasn’t coming out. I’m perfectly happy with myself and I always have been. I think the stars that do it on YouTube are very brave and I give all credit to them, but I do dream of a world where we don’t have to do that anymore.

Danyl Johnson, Former X Factor star

Danyl Johnson was seemingly outted on national TV by a judge on the X Factor

I went down to Dannii’s (Minogue) dressing room the next day, no one was there. She was a bit upset, and I said, “What’s the matter? Are you okay?” She apologised to me. She was reading stuff on Twitter and someone tweeted, “Every time you out a fairy, another fairy dies.”

That stays in my mind and why Dannii was upset. It was like my life was the weirdest thing.

A couple of months beforehand, I’m in a classroom teaching kids, then one moment I’m standing in Dannii’s dressing room watching her reading messages on Twitter. It was the most surreal moment ever. It was never intentional. It was taken completely the wrong way.

I didn’t really take it to heart. I don’t think it’s the same story in her book, but oh well…

    Ms Kasha Davis

    Kasha Davis

Was first married to a woman and so was his husband… They fell in love

It really is, and you know, what’s so wonderful about the entire experience is that we both grew up around the same time frames in, you know, the seventies and eighties, where in the US, it was very much so, you lived a closeted life. There were no gay people, and if you were, you were just kind of like in the closet. It just wasn’t very accepted, especially in the small towns that we grew up in. Both of us really essentially married our high-school sweethearts, and then tortured, we were tortured. Ended up realising in time that this obviously wasn’t fair to ourselves, but certainly not to our wives.

So really we were both sitting and dreaming of this life that we wanted to have, like we had with our ex-wives, with a home and the kids, but with a man. It was time to be honest with ourselves. I prayed for this Prince Charming, and there he was silently praying for the same thing, and there we were. Now it’s ironic how many similar situations we’ve had growing up, but it’s nice to have some similarities there that we really were both dreaming of the same thing.

    Jamal Gerald, Actor

Coming from a very religious background has helped Jamal create powerful art which challenges homophobia.

Religion told me I was a sinner, an abomination. I was told by people in my school that I was going to go to hell. I used to pray to God to pray the gay away. But as I grew older, I was able to balance myself and my religion. I believe in the concept of a god, but I am of the view that I can believe in God; but because my race is so important to me I find it hard to believe in the bible, primarily because of the history of colonialism and the use of the bible in that process. When I look at the link between colonialism and the Bible, it is not something that I want to embrace or accept.

My black heritage and my identity as a black man is something that is more important to me than my sexuality is; and the way in which the bible was used during that period of time was wholly unacceptable. For me, it remains a symbol of repression in many ways. It was used to repress the black community many years ago and, in my experiences as a younger person, it was used to repress my sexuality – but despite that, it doesn’t prevent me from embracing the idea of a higher power.

    Nebraska Thunderfuck, Drag Queen

    MacKenzie Claude

    Marine turned drag queen

Well I enlisted under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, so I was open in my personal life, but when I joined the military I was advised to go back into the closet and I did. This was going to be a career that I was embarking on and I didn’t want anything to get in the way of my hard work and my commitment. With Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, if the wrong person found out that you were gay, or suspected you of being homosexual, they could present that to the chain of command and there would be an investigation that would take place. You could be discharged from the military simply for being homosexual.

So imagine that not everyone is comfortable with homosexuality. I was completely in the closet for the first two years and it was very challenging because I would be in class or in the hall and I would hear conversations that would take place. All these people were from all over the United States, from all walks of life, brought together with a common goal, but they still have their opinions.

Came out in an ASK.fm question session.

It was a thing in my head, I knew always really. So I didn’t think twice, that was just the way it was. I didn’t want to make a big deal about it, what’s the biggie?

Not all small-town America coming out stories are tragic

My parents are like my best friends. They have been so supportive and are so amazing. That was the great thing about it, is people assume. They say, “Well, growing up in this small Oklahoma town, with this masculine football coach as your dad, he must have pressured you to play football.” Then, “Honey, he took me out on a football field once and threw the ball at me and I’m playing with my hair and just completely missed the ball.

    Tom Bosworth, Olympian

One of the very few out, openly gay athletes.

I was kind of half out at school, you know, a few of my friends knew. I spoke to them at quite a young age, probably about 14 or so. It got leaked. One of my friends wasn’t too tactful, I’m afraid. I decided to deal with it head on and not just deny it and admit it because I knew one day that I would just have to admit it again anyway. That certainly put me off speaking to my parents about it or anything like that because teenagers and kids, you know, they can be nasty, whatever it is. Had a bit of trouble at school and suffered quite a bit of bullying for a long period of time. I guess for about a year, it was just non-stop. It meant I spent a lot of time on my own and kind of hiding from people but I stand by it now. I don’t hold anything against anybody. Everybody’s looking for a weakness in somebody else at that age because they’ve got their own concerns about themselves. It certainly made me stronger and it made me a better person I think.

    Aaron Frew, Big Brother star

    CREDIT: Aaron Frew Twitter

Wasn’t out long before appearing on national TV

I only just come out to my mum a couple years ago and it’s still like a weird topic for us, so when I came out and went home straight away I was really scared but yeah she’s been really supportive. The last thing she said to me before I left was, “Aaron you’ll always be a winner in my eyes”. She’s been really supportive and I’m really blessed with that.

Kavana, Singer and Big Reunion star

    CREDIT: ITV

90’s heartthrob came out via email on a TV show

Well, I was out to my family and friends, but I’ve not done anything in the public eye worth to even talk about it. It was old news to me, but this show is about your story. It was important. I just wanted to lay my cards on the table.

Adam is very good at the group email thing, coming from his MP’s background – everyone CC’d in. We were day 4 into rehearsals and it was just getting more awkward and awkward. ‘Are you seeing anyone Kav? – Are you married’? I just couldn’t get the words out as ridiculous as that sounds.

Kenzie still doesn’t believe I’m gay for whatever reason. I could turn up singing The Wizard Of Oz in ruby slippers and he’d be like: ‘You’re not gay’. Adam was like ‘I knew it, I knew it…’ and I was like ‘you can’t talk – you’re the campest one of the group!’ So there was a lot of banter, but it was fine… Every group needs a gay don’t they?

    Wayne Dhesi, Founder of RUComingOut.com

It changed my life and enabled me to become who I am today – the real me. It enabled me to be more confident and achieve more than I ever would have done if I’d have stayed in the closet.

  • Kavana: Katie Hopkins is a GAY ICON

In a recent interview, Kavana agreed that Celebrity Big Brother runner-up Katie Hopkins is a gay icon.

Katie Hopkins, who came runner up to Katie Price in Celebrity Big Brother, has often maintained that it is her ambition to become a gay icon, has received the thumbs up from openly gay singer Kavana.

When asked if Katie could achieve her dream of becoming a gay icon, Kavana said, “oh course, she was wearing Hot Pink and American tan tights last night…”

Katie, the controversial former Apprentice Star went into the Celebrity Big Brother house as the ‘most hated woman in Britain’ however managed to win over millions of fans, achieving second place to Katie Price.

Kavana also backed Alexandra O’Neal after he used an anti-gay slur against Perez Hilton, before removing himself from the Big Brother house earlier in the series. He called Perez a “silly assed f*ggot”.

Speaking on This Morning last week he said, “I’m gay. [O’Neal] didn’t make homophobic remarks,” Kavana said. “It just came out, but he was pushed and pushed and pushed.

“When someone is sat opposite you doing certain things – I won’t go into the action Perez did – but I think he was wise and clever to walk and not put up with it anymore. I respect him for that.”

Kavana also said that he was planning to work with Alexander on some new material as well as being the wedding singer at Katie Prices forthcoming wedding.

  • Kavana Out Of Big Brother

Kavana is out of the Big Brother house, becoming the 6th celebrity to be evicted.

The “I Can Make You Feel Good” singer, Kavana was the 6th celebrity be to evicted from the Big Brother house, narrowly missing out the opportunity to be in Friday’s live final. Speaking to Emma in his exit interview the openly gay singer said that he ‘knew he was going today.’ His exit along with Perez Hilton’s in tonight’s show leaves, Michelle Visage, Katie Hopkins, Katie Price, Keith Chegwin and Calum Best to win the show.

Calling the house a ‘lunatic asylum’ Kavana looked relieved to be out of the house. He also joked with the audience about his drinking, which is why he now has a lovely paunch. In his time in the house drinking did get the better of him, which led to him declaring that Keith Chegwin was an enemy.

During his time on the Big Reunion, Kavana had an explosive row with Adam Rickett, speaking about his outburst to TheGayUK Kavana said, “What they didn’t show on that particular day is that I had received some pretty bad news, my mum is poorly with Alzheimer’s. I had a very weak moment. I just hit the bottle, obviously, it was right in the middle of rehearsals and on camera.

“My mum’s in a care home. It’s pretty tough because I can’t call her because it confuses her. So I’ve gone from speaking to my mum everyday to just not speaking to her – maybe once a month, because it gets her very confused. She doesn’t understand who I am. It’s kind of hard, but it is what it is. When I do see her I make sure we have quality time.

“I have a tendency to self-sabotage, if something good is about to happen a part of me tries to sabotage it.”

  • CELEBRITY BIG BROTHER: Kavana Unleashes His Inner Monster

It seems as though booze is getting the better of singer Kavana in the house after declaring Keith Chegwin a new enemy.

A drunken Kavana has declared war on two housemates, Keith Chegwin and Perez Hilton. In the Diary Room, after downing a cup of alcohol, Kavana tries to release a burp before describing the mood as “false as fu*k”. He then described Keith as lovely man “a one trick pony” and that Perez is playing a huge game, claiming, “when is the English public going to see that f*cking Perez is playing a f*cking game!”

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, the Housemates discuss Kavana and his drinking. Keith and Alicia agree that he can be rude when he’s drunk, but Katie Hopkins observes that he has a calming effect on arguments in the house.

In the bedroom, Kavana remarks to Perez about Keith, “I’ve got a new enemy now, it’s not you, it’s him”, As Kavana speaks, Keith lies awake in bed and replies “I’m not your enemy” Kavana replies “Trust me you are, and you’ll see it tomorrow”.

So I’ve gone from speaking to my mum every day to just not speaking to her – maybe once a month, because it gets her very confused. She doesn’t understand who I am. It’s kind of hard, but it is what it is. When I do see her I make sure we have quality time.

“I have a tendency to self-sabotage, if something good is about to happen a part of me tries to sabotage it.”

Celebrity Big Brother TX tonight at 9pm on Channel 5.

  • Kavana Wanted To Take 18 Year Old Best Male Award Into Celeb Big Brother

Apparently gay pop singer Kavana wanted to take his beloved 1997 Smash Hits award into the Big Brother House.

The Sun is reporting that sources close to the singer Kavana, who is currently starring in Channel 5’s Celebrity Big Brother, wanted to take his Smash Hits Award into the compound. He won the award 18 years ago.

An insider reportedly told The Sun: “He was really anxious about leaving it – it’s like his comfort blanket.
“He takes it everywhere with him in a black holdall bag and he’ll panic if it even leaves his eyeline.”

However THEGAYUK’s editor Jake Hook, who interviewed Kavana in 2014, said,

“This is a ridiculous story and quite bitchy. When we spoke he certainly didn’t tote his Smash Hits award at me. However, when we spoke he did say that he was writing a book called Smashed Hits, Misadventures In Pop.”

Kavana entered the Big Brother compound on Wednesday evening and was greeted by Celebrity Blogger Perez Hilton who welcomed him by calling him a “fellow gay.”

Kavana came out in 2014 at the age of 36.

  • Perez Happy For Another Gay In Big Brother

Perez greeted nineties singer Kavana with pleasure last night with ‘another gay’ comment.

Openly gay Perez Hilton was visibly excited during yesterday’s launch show when Kavana, who came out last year at the age of 36, entered the house. “Another gay” greeted Kavana, who looked somewhat bemused.

However not everyone knew about Perez’s sexuality after former Corrie actor, Ken Morley, who will share a bed with the celebrity blogger, enquired about his sexual orientation. Perez assured Ken that there will be no funny business, however, did go on to tell the group that he can’t share a bed as he gets erect when he comes into close body contact with another person.

Perez Hilton is well known for his celebrity spats. Most recently he and Azealia Banks made headlines and in 2013 Hilton feared for his and his son’s life when he fell out with Lady Gaga.

    Ooo er.

  • INTERVIEW | Kavana

    INTERVIEW | Kavana

From the all-new Manband off ITV’s The Big Reunion, we get an exclusive chat with Kavana, before the show’s finale. On a crackly line, somewhere in an alleyway off Regent Street – a wind-swept 90’s heartthrob talks about Donatella Versace, Coming Out 2014 style, self-sabotage drinking and how he sometimes wants to smack Andi Peter’s in the mouth.

How does it feel to be back?
It’s very surreal, I’m absolutely enjoying it this time round, it’s crazy, it’s very very surreal. Obviously I’ve had a bit of a rollercoaster journey on the show, but I’m just blown over, surprisingly by the public support that I’ve had. – Especially as things are edited in a certain way, and you can be put up in a certain light.
It’s a TV show, that’s what you sign up for. It’s kind of a bit of a soap opera. I did what I did – they can’t put in what didn’t happen. So it’s been crazy watching it back.

What’s it like watching yourself on TV after all this time?
Sometimes it’s fine, sometimes I’m hiding behind the sofa. Sometimes I don’t watch it because I know what’s coming up.

Did you know that the producers of the show, would heavily feature on the drinking episode, ensuing drama and aftermath?
You know what, I knew exactly what I was getting myself into and I think part of me, I would say, did it on purpose; but the self-sabotage comes out. I think at the back of my mind I think I knew it was going to happen, so I thought ‘lets get it over and done with’. It’s been harsh to watch. But I think a part of me that did it on purpose. Part of me made myself do that.

So what happened when Adam Rickitt try to reach out to you – and you had your fabulous, “They’re f**king lucky to have me” dramz?
Well I was just coming back from the pub at 10 o’clock to find a camera crew and Adam Rickitt outside my hotel room waiting for my arrival. I was pissed off. I was like: ‘Come in, come in… What do you want?’

Did you know at the time where it was going ? Did it feel like being like a lamb led to the slaughter…
Yes, that’s why I just thought let’s rack it up. Let’s give ‘em a good ending here. Toys out of pram, magazine thrown to the floor… Cut.

We love that you’ve managed to make it the Kavana show!
Is drinking a problem for you?
What they didn’t show on that particular day is that I had received some pretty bad news, my mum is poorly with Alzheimers. I had a very weak moment. I just hit the bottle, obviously it was right in the middle of rehearsals and on camera.
My mum’s in a care home. I have a tendency to self-sabotage, if something good is about to happen a part of me tries to sabotage it.

What’s the aftercare like when the record industry moves on?
There was no aftercare. You’re just dumped. I was lucky to begin with because I got paid off from the record company. I wasn’t actually dropped. They made a mistake. Virgin basically got all messed up, well not messed up, but because the Spice Girls were on the same label a lot of the team moved to the states. My A&R left. They missed the date to say ‘you can’t have the next record deal’. They owed it me in the end. We went to court over it. They paid me x amount and that’s when I took the money and ran to America.
When I moved to America it was definitely a leap – that’s when I went full steam ahead.

How did Los Angeles treat you?
It was amazing to begin with, I had an apartment on Sunset Boulevard, I had the agent, I had the management. I was going for auditions with Warner Brothers, I was in a soap opera for a little bit, but the dream out there is everybody’s. You go into a café and the waiters are all actors. There’s a lot of competition

How does it feel to be singing those songs again?
To be honest with you, I was sick of singing I Can Make You Feel Good. I’ve gone from singing it – back in the day – in Arenas and TV shows to pubs to make a living. Everyone wants to hear that song, so I ended up hating it, but I’m actually loving it this time round. They’ve totally reinvented it, they gave it a different feel and with the other guys on it is great to have them there.

Have you bonded with the guys well?
I think me and Adam have bonded really well. But everyone is so different – I take the hat of being a looney tune, I have my moments – Gareth’s a bit of a Jack-the-lad – Kenzie’s very dry, but a genuine guy…

So email a very 2014 way to come out to the lads of 5th Story!
Well I was out to my family and friends, but I’ve not done anything in the public eye worth to even talk about it.
Adam was like ‘I knew it, I knew it…’ and I was like ‘you can’t talk – you’re the campest one of the group!’ So there was a lot of banter, but it was fine… Every group needs a gay don’t they!

You were having a heart to heart with one of the girls from Girl Thing in The Big Reunion and you said, you didn’t want people to judge you because they haven’t walked in your shoes. What moment would you want people to walk in?
Wow. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through a bad time on my part, but you can have two instances: One is signing a £500,000 deal, buying a house for your parents, feeling absolutely elated. 6 – 7 years later having to borrow 50p to put in the phone box to call the mortgage company to say that you’re going to agree to them to repossess your house- and you have to tell your Mum and Dad that they can no longer live in the house and be just absolutely pot less. I remember walking around in a circle in Leicester Square thinking: I’ve got to tell my Mum and Dad, who are now in their 60s that they’ve got nowhere to live. From one extreme to the other.

How did you deal with that extreme?
It was the worst time. It was horrendous. The worst stress ever. And that was the trigger for when I went… You know…. Off the rails.

How did you get back on track?
I think it’s a working progress. I’m not perfect – absolutely not, but keeping going, putting one foot in front of the other. My father has passed away, but I’m lucky to have his mindset. He was very much the glass is half full. I always had faith it would turn around. I just kept knocking on doors. Keep trying and keep trying…

If you were going to write an autobiography what would you call it?
I don’t think I’m famous enough to write an autobiography, but I have started writing a book, and the working title at the moment is called: Smashed Hits: Misadventures in Pop. I’m on chapter three at the minute. It ‘s like more memoirs. The first chapter I wrote is called Donatella Nobody… It involved me at Donatella Versaces house in the late 90s in Milan at a party – and she was talking to me and an incident took place and came close to me and whispered in me ear: Don-ta-Tell-a Nobody… (Laughs) I remember that party very well, jumping on the bed with Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss…

What do you make of Andi Peter’s voiceovers?
Slightly annoying… but you can’t not love Andi Peters. He’s so nostalgic. He know exactly what he’s doing.
Sometimes I think it’s funny, sometimes I want to punch him in the face!

The Big Reunion Continues tonight on ITV2 at 9:00PM & Kavana appears on Celebrity Juice, with Keith Lemon straight after. The full interview will appear in the next edition of TheGayUK out on 6th April 2014
