TV REVIEW | AJ and The Queen, Episode 3 and 4

Ah, what a treat!! These two episodes were much better. Ruby is slowly letting go of her victim-hood and is starting to present the glorious diva she is, while AJ has stopped her shouting and is growing as a personality.

As a Ru fan, I was feeling so bad about disliking the show he has worked so hard on for so long, so it is such a relief to say that episode three really picks up. The storyline is less scattered, the acting gets better and the pacing has improved.

It is good to see Ruby regaining some of her confidence and more importantly wit. Of course, she is still grieving for what she thought was true love, but she doesn’t let people take advantage of her anymore or sit quietly when others insult her.

In these two episodes, she brazenly takes part in a wet T-shirt competition in a southern town to earn money and gives mean queens back as good as she gets. She even defies them when they sabotage her act. Yes, Miss Ruby Red is rising.

Meanwhile, AJ has improved a lot: thankfully the caring side we glimpsed near the end of episode two has lasted and she is now taking care of Ruby as much as she is taking care of her. She has become fiercely protective of her. Most importantly: she has stopped shouting all her lines, which makes all the difference.

Still on their way to Texas episode 3 sees them stuck in a small town as they the route across the Hershey Highway. The reason why they ended up there: trying to drive away quickly before Sanchez and Lady Danger spotted them they ran into a car leaving them with a broken backlight (and AJ with 200 dollars little con-artist she is!) An exasperated policeman (in a hilarious scene) orders them to get it fixed.

Sadly the repair will cost $2000, as the man at the repair shop discovers that the van is more damaged than they thought.

In the shop Ruby and AJ build a connection with the owner’s wife, after a rough start, which will become important later in the episode.

Ruby tries to teach AJ that there is good in everyone and tries to get her to make up with her mom in between a big to-do about breastplates.

The mum isn’t a well fleshed out character right now, still isn’t in episode four. I hope we get to know what happened to her, because right now she is a bit of a cliché.

Meanwhile, episode four is glorious with both Chad Michaels and Kennedy Davenport in big parts. Here we get to know so much about Ruby and Sanchez and a slight hint that Sanchez might have cared … or is he trying to swindle Ruby all over again?

This episode has catfights between queens, more gay cop revelations, Rupaul doing a big performance to Sia’s Chandelier and Chad being Cher.

This episode also shows how much Ruby and AJ are a team now, even though AJ thinking she knows what’s best for Ruby is a little too soon.

    On to the next stop.

  • TV REVIEW | A&J and The Queen – Episode 2, Not a good message for female to male transgender people

TV REVIEW | A&J and The Queen – Episode 2, Not a good message for female to male transgender people

    AJ AND THE QUEEN

This episode for me had a lot of the same highs and flaws as episode one. Ru and her queens (this time including the lovely Jinkx Monsoon) were a joy and the storyline set at the Pittsburgh club itself would have been enough for me.

The show’s best moments are in the club where Ruby meets with old friends and a frenemy. Their history, culminating in the most hilariously bizarre performance of ‘Proud Mary’ ever, moving into their subsequent making up was lovely and something that deserved more attention. It had that lovely sense of: “we may fight, but when you are down or in trouble I will protect you” that is so strong in drag family.

Sadly most of the episode revolved around AJ screaming and demanding.

Her part is very odd. So far, once again, she just does nothing but insult Ruby and the other queens, she is still stealing things and at one point even threatens poor Ruby into taking her to Texas. Then when she is called out or Ruby asks questions she starts to act the victim, poor girl she has been through so much …

But apparently this is acceptable and Ruby goes out of her way to please the little madame. Most people do. AJ is supposed to be this very special being for some reason and everyone treat her with such delicacy.

A long part of the episode was all about AJ’s gender identity. She dresses and acts like a boy because, she claims, people “leave boys alone”.

Sorry but what? This was a shocker to me. Claiming boys do not get abused or experience other forms of violence in any way is just not on. It is especially odd that this comes from the maker of Drag Race where the contestants often discuss all the terrible things they experienced as a child/teen. This often includes abuse.

What is worse is that even though the show and Ru wanted to make this lovely statement of not putting gender in boxes and living life as you are, it is not a good message for female to male transgenders.

It kind of states that any girl wanting to be a boy is damaged or probably had no good female role models. We are told that AJ has never seen any other example of womanhood than a hooker and a stripper. She has a mobile, access to the internet but no, that is all she knows. Okay, girl.

Thankfully Ruby spends the rest of the episode educating her, almost willing AJ to become a girl again to the point of performing a show in her honour all about how important being a women is.

The thing is, Netflix has so many strong feminist shows, it would have been great if this show could have focused on the strong LGBTQ+ message instead for a change. Why could AJ not simply identify as a boy? Such a wasted opportunity.

With all this going on you’d almost forget that Ruby is still in great danger: her criminal ex revealed to be called Damien and his boss Lady Danger are hot on their tracks. Seeing the hell Ruby is going through seems to soften AJ somewhat near the end of the episode. Hope this lasts.

Then one very important question that needs asking: why has Ruby never digitalised her Oprah tapes?

  • TV REVIEW | AJ & The Queen, Episode 1 – promising, but not entirely what I’m looking for

TV REVIEW | AJ & The Queen, Episode 1 – promising, but not entirely what I’m looking for

    AJ AND THE QUEEN

As a Drag Race and RuPaul fan, the thought of a comedy-drama starring Ru and so many of her girls sounded like a dream.

Sadly Episode 1 isn’t giving me entirely what I was looking for.

Yes, Ru is fabulous, as always, and the first half of the episode was brilliant:
Ru as Ruby Red performing at the club, her reading of the owner in front of so many incredible Drag Race alumni including Bianca Del Rio. The scenes with Michael Leon Wooley who plays her fierce best friend. These were all great, with just that mixture of camp, drama and comedy you’d expect from a show like this.

The story moves along nicely: Ruby Red has been in the drag business for decades and has finally saved up enough money to start a club of her own. She dreams of making life better for her drag sisters.

This by itself would be an amazing show. The characters introduced so far work and Ruby thinking up ways to earn money to get her club after all with help from her drag friends would be a great series.

Sadly it’s when AJ arrives that the story goes off the rails. So far it is unclear why her character is needed as it takes the flow out of the story. AJ’s background story is written as very tragic, but the way Izzy G performs it does not evoke any sympathy. In fact, so far all she does is shout and annoy.

She also steals from Ruby and utters homophobic slurs. Not really clear to see why Ruby would be so caring towards her in return. Perhaps the idea is that we will see AJ grow and change as the series moves along. I hope that some of this change will be sooner rather than later as right now her scenes are difficult to watch.

Sadly, the man she thought loved her and would help her build her dream turns out to be a con who steals all her money and her dreams. This leads into a hilarious scene in the police office and a lovely scene of her best friend encouraging her to try again.

The story ends with Ruby leaving for a road trip to earn back some of her money while the police are working on her case that may turn out bigger and more dangerous than she had imagined.

Despite the minor niggle, the story has a big heart and a clear message: RuPaul’s message – it is okay to be you, it is okay to love yourself, you matter.

There is warmth and a strange comfort that is rare in TV shows these days and with promises of big performances, more Drag Race stars and adventure I am looking forward to what happens next.

  • RuPaul’s Drag Race Look Back At The Finals and “RuPaul” the show is coming!!

RuPaul’s Drag Race Look Back At The Finals and “RuPaul” the show is coming!!

It’s been a week since the Drag Race Finals and all that came with it and on Monday the RuPaul show will start.

What happened at the finals and what can we expect from Ru? We’ll talk about all this here.

Well let’s first say: what a fabulous final!! One of the best in a while.

While some finals dragged on as we waited for the crowning, this one was filled to the brim:
Each top four queen had their own moment to talk, do a sketch and share the stage with Ru.

There was music (Christina and the Queens performing “Cover Girl”), Queens from the past, Vanjie!! And Ru seemingly living her best life joking and glowing. A joy.

Another highlight was Michelle Visage who got her deserved moment to talk about Breast Implant Illness Awareness. Michelle is such a big part of this show she should have a section each year. It would be great if she could perform one of the songs she has been doing on the road with the Rugirls one day.

Then on to the lip-syncs: Silky vs Brooke Lynn, Yvie vs A’Keria: the right result in both cases. It was sad to see Silky so scared and seemingly already giving up before it all started. Apparently she had been suffering from a social media hate campaign that tarnished her confidence. Very sad.

The big finale: Yvie vs Brooke Lynn. One of those historic lip-syncs we’ll be talking about in years to come. While Yvie was absolutely shining, and was the deserved winner, Brooke Lynn would have won every other year. Her “Reveal” coat, her dancing: stunning. But Yvie was unbeatable she drew everyone’s attention in her mirrored dress and majestic poses. She seemed already a star and the audience lapped her up.

As the winner Yvie of course quickly released some music and a video that was absolutely on brand Yvie style!!

Now it’s been a whole week without Drag Race but not without RuPaul. Mama Ru has been doing the chat show rounds promoting the Rupaul show. Her new daily live show, that is more than just TV.
    Watch one interview here:

We might also see Michelle Visage back soon in the UK as our tiny diva is rumored to be signing on for Strictly!!

But before that don’t forget: Drag Race UK is coming soon!! New Queens, new styles new accents! Are you excited? I am!!

We’ll leave you with Ru talking about LGBT rights and Donald Trump on the View this week, because … Well, because!!

Drag Race stars used for wildly different purposes in Poland and the UK as Rupaul arrives for British Drag Race

Yes girl!! It’s starting!! This week Rupaul and Michelle Visage arrived in the UK to start preparing for Drag Race UK. The two also caused a stir attending Waitress the musical and surprising the cast backstage.

Rumour has it the recordings will start this Monday!!

Arriving in the UK right in time for the anti Brexit march, Rupaul might have been pleasantly surprised that so many signs carried her image or variations on famous Drag Race quotes.

Yes, Drag Race fans made a point in turning out with some amazing banners to tell Brexit to sashay away!
Here are some of the best.

  • Drag Race UK announces TWO new judges

Drag Race UK announces TWO new judges

RuPaul and Michelle Visage will be joined by two stalwarts of British TV.

Alan Carr and Graham Norton will be joining Michelle Visage and RuPaul for the first ever Drag Race UK as judges when it airs later this year. BBC Three confirmed the news today, while Michelle Visage was confirmed earlier this month.

Alan Carr is no stranger to drag having dressed up as various female stars for Heat magazine particularly when he dragged up as Madonna to recreate her infamous “cape” moment at the MTV Awards.

BBC Three has confirmed two of TV’s best loved presenters and personalities, Graham Norton and Alan Carr, will be joining RuPaul and Michelle Visage on the judging panel for RuPaul’s Drag Race UK.

Eight-time Bafta TV award-winner Graham Norton is no stranger to RuPaul’s Drag Race, having already appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars season two in the US as a guest judge in 2016. Whilst comedian Alan Carr is a long-time fan of RuPaul, having made his acquaintance when Ru appeared on his chat show Alan Carr’s Chatty Man.

Both Graham and Alan share a passion for the drag scene and RuPaul’s Drag Race.

The first UK adaption of the global hit will showcase the most fabulous drag queens that the UK has to offer, and Graham and Alan will appear as rotating resident judges. Each week, they will join RuPaul, Michelle Visage and a celebrity guest judge.

For the grand finale, Graham and Alan will both appear on the judging panel alongside previously announced judge Michelle Visage, where together they will assist host RuPaul in crowning the UK’s Next Drag Superstar.

Graham Norton says: “Becoming part of the drag race family makes me ridiculously happy! I can’t wait to see what the UK drag queens bring to the party, but they better weeeeerk!!!”

Alan Carr, says: “Wow! To be sat next to Michelle Visage and Mama Ru as a guest judge on possibly one of my all-time favourite shows EVER is a dream come true. I can’t wait to see what the UK Queens have got in store – it’s going to be sickening! does death drop

RuPaul, says: “I was both shocked and delighted when Graham and Alan told me they’d be wearing tucking panties when sitting at the judges’ table. I told them it was not necessary, but they insisted. Now that’s what I call dedication!”

Kate Phillips, Controller, Entertainment Commissioning, says: “I am so excited that self-confessed Drag Race fans Graham and Alan have agreed to join Ru and Michelle on our judging panel. Their immense wit and wisdom will be invaluable in ensuring the most deserving Queen sashays away with the title.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is an 8×60′ World of Wonder production for BBC Three. It was commissioned by Damian Kavanagh, Former Controller BBC Three and Kate Phillips, Controller, Entertainment Commissioning at the BBC. The Executive Producers are RuPaul Charles, Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, Tom Campbell, Sally Miles and Bruce McCoy, and the BBC Commissioning Editor is Ruby Kuraishe.

  • Finally Ru shows off her incredible legs

    They are long… AF

RuPaul has legs that most women would kill for, yet she always seems to keep those pins under layers of fabric. Well not in the most recent episode of All-Stars.

It wasn’t that long ago that we questioned why RuPaul never shows off her legs and it appears as though she may have heard our moans.

Gus Kenworthy shared an epic judges’ photo on Instagram from when he appeared on the latest season of All-Stars as a guest judge. In the usual line up photo of the judges, which always features RuPaul and Michelle Visage, Gus appeared alongside the other guest judges including Keiynan Lonsdale .

Gus was keen to point out how tall RuPaul was compared to the rest of the judges calling the show “Ru’s Tall Drag Race”! He shared that being part of the judge panel for the episode was a “literal dream come true”.

Usually, on RuPaul’s Drag Race, the queen’s legs are hidden beneath a glamorous ball-gown, so it’s incredibly rare to see her in a short skirt, shorts or like this – in nothing but underwear.

Even Mariah – who is known to show off her pins for album covers would be proud!

RuPaul’s usual look includes a full-length ball-gown for her show, RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Fans of the iconic queen shared their enthusiasm for the picture with it gaining over 137,000 likes in just 10 hours. One fan claimed that they needed the picture framed, while another wrote: “legs for days”.

Another said that haters would say that the candid shot was photoshopped.

  • Who is RuPaul? Is RuPaul married? And is the world’s most famous drag queen a woman?

Who is RuPaul? Is RuPaul married? And is the world’s most famous drag queen a woman?

RuPaul is probably now one of the most famous drag queens in the world, all thanks to the show RuPaul’s Drag Race.

    Is RuPaul transgender?
    (C) BIGSTOCK

RuPaul Andre Charles‘ rise to fame has taken several decades and although the entertainer had an early brush with fame in the 90s, when he appeared in numerous films, had his own talk show and released his debut single and album, it wasn’t until the juggernaut reality show, RuPaul’s Drag Race that Ru’s star truly rose to astronomical levels of fame.

RuPaul, is a drag queen, which means (although not always) he is a biological male who wears women’s clothes for entertainment. RuPaul has often asserted that he only dresses as a woman when he’s getting paid.

So RuPaul is not a transgender or biological woman. RuPaul identifies as a man but has spoken about using both male and female pronouns. In Ru’s autobiography, the entertainer wrote, “You can call me he. You can call me she. You can call me Regis and Kathie Lee; I don’t care! Just as long as you call me.”

“You can call me he. You can call me she. You can call me Regis and Kathie Lee; I don’t care! Just as long as you call me.”

He has, in the past, caused controversy with the trans community and faced a backlash because of a statement in which he said that he “probably’ wouldn’t allow a contestant who had “really transitioned” to take part in Drag Race.

He later doubled down on his statement on Twitter by saying, “You can take performance-enhancing drugs and still be an athlete, just not in the Olympics.”

The comment was met with a backlash. RuPaul later apologised on Twitter saying, “Each morning I pray to set aside everything I THINK I know, so I may have an open mind and a new experience. I understand and regret the hurt I have caused. The trans community are heroes of our shared LGBTQ movement. You are my teachers.

“In the 10 years we’ve been casting Drag Race, the only thing we’ve ever screened for is charisma uniqueness nerve and talent. And that will never change.”

    Is RuPaul married?

    Is Rupaul married?

Yes, RuPaul got married in 2017 to his long-term partner Georges LeBar. Until their marriage, the pair had been together for over 20 years. Georges is a rancher who has a 50-acre ranch estate in Wyoming and South Dakota.

Speaking about how they met RuPaul said, “I met Georges on the dance floor at Limelight in New York City, the disco,”

“He was on the dance floor dancing like a manic. I had to go over and say, ‘What are you going through?’”

“And it’s also because he’s actually 6’7”, so he’s taller than I am — so of course I had to notice him.”

Ahead of the RuPaul’s Drag Race finale this week (already!?!) here are the queens who have had the most successful music careers since leaving the show.

Leave Drag Race – release a single. So many queens have trodden this path after starring in RuPaul’s Drag Race, but not all are successful! But for those who are, the spoils can be great. The head queen herself, RuPaul has released a whopping 11 albums, but which of her gals has had the most successful music career outside the show?

Her song, “I Adore You” tops the chart as the most listened to song.
