  • Trump’s ban on transgender service people fails

Trump’s ban on transgender people being able to serve in the military has failed.

Trump's ban on transgender service people fails

President Donald Trump’s ban on transgender men and women serving in the US military has been halted by the Defense Secretary, General Jim Mattis.

Transgender personal will be able to continue serving in the US military for the time being after Secretary Mattis has said that the ban’s implication needs further scrutiny.

In a statement, Mr Mattis said, “current policy with respect to currently serving members will remain in place”.

  • Trump’s administration demands the IP details to everyone who visited an anti-Trump website

A petition to stop President Trump’s administration from gaining access to the personal data of those who visited an anti-Trump website has reached hundreds of thousands of people.

Trump's administration demands the IP details to everyone who visited an anti-Trump website

A warrant from the Department of Justice (DOJ) is seeking to reveal every person who visited an anti-Trump website. On the 17th July, the DOJ served a website hosting company, DreamHost with a search warrant for information which relates to a website which was used to coordinate protests during Donald Trump’s inauguration event back in January.

The DOJ reports to the United States Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, who was appointed by the President of the United States.

The warrant includes a search on data about the website’s owners and over 1.3 million people who visited that site.

    Overreaching Government?

The petition, which is hosted by the Avaaz petitioning site, is calling the request by the US Administration an investigatory overreach and threatens to violate the privacy and safety of millions of internet users.

    The petition reads,

To Judge Morin and the Superior Court of the District of Columbia:

We call on you to rule in favour of DreamHost in the matter of the search of www.disruptj20.org.

The request for citizens’ data by the Trump administration is investigatory overreach and violates the privacy and compromises the safety of millions of people inside the US and around the world.

The search warrant requested is an outrageous abuse of government authority by the Department of Justice and should be denied by the court.

The website in question is www.disruptj20.org, which was used to organise demonstrations and protests on the 20th January during Trump’s inauguration.

Dreamhost which hosts the site said it was going to challenge the request in court.

    They said,

“DreamHost, like many online service providers, is approached by law enforcement regularly to provide information about customers who may be the subject of criminal investigations.

“These types of requests are not uncommon; our legal department reviews and scrutinizes each request and, when necessary, rejects and challenges vague or faulty orders

“You would be shocked to see just how many of these challenges we’re obligatedto mount every year!

“Chris Ghazarian, our General Counsel, has taken issue with this particular search warrant for being a highly untargeted demand that chills free association and the right of free speech afforded by the Constitution”.

  • President Trump: I’ve got respect for the Trans community

President Trump has responded to criticism over banning transgender people from working in the military by suggesting that he got a “lot of votes” from LGBT people.

Trump has responded to criticism levelled at him after he vowed that transgender personnel would be forbidden from working in the US military last month.

Taking to Twitter the President said,

“I have great respect for the community… I think I’ve had great support, or I’ve had great support from that community. I got a lot of votes.

“But the transgender, the military’s working on it now… It’s been a very difficult situation and I think I’m doing a lot of people a favour by coming out and just saying it.”

    He added,

“As you know, it’s been a very complicated issue for the military, and I think I’m doing the military a great favour.”

Last month, after consulting with his generals and “military experts”, Trump announced that transgender people will be banned from service. This is in stark contrast to the Obama administration which allowed transgender people to serve their country openly last year.

The announcement was also in contrast to Trump’s pledge to protect LGBT people during his election campaign. Taking to Twitter in June 2016 he said that he would “fight” for the community.

    The cost of transgender staff?

Initially, the cost of looking after trans personnel was cited as a reason for the decision. In his original statement, he said,

In a series of tweets, Mr Trump wrote,

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.

“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”

However further analysis by our political editor, Skylar Baker-Jordan shows,

Thousands of trans people are already serving – many of them openly – in the US armed forces and the Department of Defense has found no evidence that they undermine unit cohesion. Additionally, a 2016 study commissioned by the Department of Defense to study this very issue found that an “exceedingly small portion of active-component health care expenditures” was spent on trans people, with trans healthcare representing only a .0005 to .017 per cent total increase on defence spending.

  • What does trans health care cost the US Military and is it “tremendously” expensive?

With the news that President Donald Trump has banned transgender people from working for the US military, we look into what medical health care for transgender employees actually costs.

What does trans health care cost the US Military and is it "tremendously" expensive?

In a series of tweets, Mr Trump wrote,

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.

“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”

Political editor for THEGAYUK, Skylar Baker-Jordan notes,

Thousands of trans people are already serving – many of them openly – in the US armed forces, and the Department of Defense has found no evidence that they undermine unit cohesion. Additionally, a 2016 study commissioned by the Department of Defense to study this very issue found that an “exceedingly small portion of active-component health care expenditures” was spent on trans people, with trans healthcare representing only a .0005 to .017 per cent total increase on defence spending.

So in total medical spend is transgender health care tremendously expensive. In a word… No.

  • Why Trump banned trans people from serving in the US military and what it means for trans service members

Earlier today, US President Donald Trump announced – via a series of tweets – that transgender Americans will no longer be allowed to serve in the US armed forces. This reverses a policy implemented by former President Barack Obama last year and was, according to sources close to the Pentagon, completely unexpected.

Why Trump banned trans people from serving in the US military and what it means for trans service members

The move has caused a wave of controversy throughout the country and reignited a social war many Americans thought was behind them. It has also baffled many people, who fail to see exactly what this is supposed to accomplish. Trump mentions the “tremendous medical costs and disruption” that transgender troops entail.

Yet thousands of trans people are already serving – many of them openly – in the US armed forces, and the Department of Defense has found no evidence that they undermine unit cohesion. Additionally, a 2016 study commissioned by the Department of Defense to study this very issue found that an “exceedingly small portion of active-component health care expenditures” was spent on trans people, with trans healthcare representing only a .0005 to .017 per cent total increase on defence spending.

These facts are leading many in Washington to speculate that the ban is actually intended for political reasons. Whether to distract from the investigation into possible collusion between his campaign and Russia to sway the 2016 election or from the Republicans’ shambolic attempts to repeal Obamacare, people are being left baffled by what exactly this ban is meant to accomplish.

Why now? What does this ban mean politically?

A Trump administration official may have cleared it up though, telling Axios reporter Jonathan Swan that this was designed to be a wedge issue between Democrats and Rust Belt voters in the 2018 midterms. Indeed, the move may well help rally his base – which sees what they call “identity politics” issues as distractions from the economic concerns (though largely remain oblivious to the fact that by making this an issue they are the ones playing “identity politics”) – and win him some votes if he is able to use this as a distraction from other issues.

This strategy worked for former president George W Bush in 2004, when he successfully used a proposed amendment to the US Constitution that would ban same-sex marriage to turn out evangelical voters. Of course, that year Mr Bush had several referendums on whether to ban same-sex marriage at the state level, and Mr Trump is unlikely to have anything similar to draw attention to this particular issue, especially given the gravity of the Russia investigation and the gridlock his party has perpetuated in Washington, where the Republicans hold the Oval Office and both houses of Congress. And the 2018 midterms are a long way away, politically speaking, so whether this will pay off the way Trump hopes is unknowable right now.

Activists at the ready to rally against the trans ban

Still, the move has mobilised LGBT activists, who have roundly condemned Mr Trump’s announcement. “Trolling at tis finest from a man who’s never served & shown up the way trans servicefolk have & are,” trans activist and author Janet Mock tweeted. Meanwhile, disabled retired army Sargent Shane Ortega told MSNBC that Trump is using trans service members “to invoke some sort of emotional reaction from the public to circumvent his own investigations that are going right now towards his impeachment.”

Along with the questions about why the president did this, some people are raising a very real concern about what happens to the trans troops already serving openly. “The DoD has released many videos this year of trans service members telling their story,” Gizmodo’s Matt Novak tweeted. “What happens to these people now?” It’s a question that the thousands of trans people who are already serving will want answered, and quickly. Whether they will be discharged or not remains to be seen.

Another question we don’t yet have answered is how this ban is going to take shape. Trump has announced it on Twitter, but that does not an executive order or bill make. Defense Secretary James Mattis is on vacation and the Senate Armed Services Committee and Pentagon were both blindsided, the latter referring questions on the policy to the White House. We don’t yet know the exact terms of this ban or whether a court would uphold it when its constitutionality is invariably challenged.

Whatever the final outcome, Mr Trump can no longer pretend to be an ally of the LGBT community – something he has routinely claimed to be since his days on the campaign trail – nor can Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump pretend they are “moderating forces,” as they decided the president wouldn’t listen to them on LGBT rights and their “political capital” was best spent elsewhere. It is clear that the social conservative wing of the Trump administration, led by Vice President Mike Pence, has won out.

What this means for the LGBT community going forward is unknowable at this time, but undoubtedly has many trans service members and activists on edge as they wait to see if the president follows through with his tweets and turns bigotry into policy.

  • What was Donald Trump’s first ever tweet?

You can’t turn on the news anymore without a Tweet from President Donald Trump making the headlines… but where did it all begin?

President Donald Trump has sent over 35,200 tweets – many of them late at night or very early in the morning, which many commentators have said is a clever marketing tactic in order for him to have the run of the news cycle for the next 24 hours. It was a tactic which he used to great effect during his presidential campaign. It left his competition reacting to the comment or accusations, rather than having the opportunity to be proactive.

So what was Donald Trump’s first-ever Tweet – well it was sent in May 2009 – and it was self-promoting. He (or someone tweeting on his behalf) was simply letting his followers know that he was on Late Night with David Letterman.

It has had 436 Retweets and 402 likes – a far cry from the tens of thousand a tweet might achieve if sent today.

Speaking about the power of social media and more specifically, his presence on social media Trump said,

“I really believe that, um– the fact that I have such power in terms of numbers with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, et cetera, I think it helped me win all of these races where they’re spending much more money than I spent,

“You know, I spent my money. A lot of my money. And I won. I think that social media has more power than the money they spent, and I think maybe to a certain extent, I proved that.”

  • Here’s all the things that Trump said June was the official month for… none of them LGBT Pride

President Donald Trump has proclaimed that June is the official month for so many things… so so many things, just not Pride.

    Is Donald Trump homophobic

So Donald Trump has said that June is the official month for

    • Great Outdoors Month

A press release was sent from the White House on the 31st May, proclaiming that June 2017 was the Great Outdoors Month.

    • National Caribbean-American Heritage Month

Another press release sent on the 31st May was earmarked as the National Caribbean-American Heritage Month.

    • African-American Music Appreciation Month

    Ditto: African-American Music Appreciation Month

    • National Ocean Month

To celebrate “the mighty oceans and their extraordinary resources,” Donald Trump said that June was the national month for Oceans.

    • National Home Ownership Month

You know Home Owners – they need a month to recognise their struggles

He also declared that June was the official month for Father’s day and National Flag Week.

Of course, all these things are important and need their recognition, no one denies that… but come on Prez where’s the love for the LGBT+ community?

The White House has yet to acknowledge Pride in the US. Rewind to last year when Trump reached out to the LGBT+ community during his campaigning to let them know he was keen to protect LGBT equality and rights.

    He said,

“As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology,

“As a Republican, I’m so happy to hear you cheering for what I just said.”

Most LGBT Pride events take place across the US in the month of June… It was chosen to commemorate the Stonewall Riots which happened at the end of June 1969. President Bill Clinton was the first US President to declare June as “Gay & Lesbian Pride Month” on June 2, 2000. President Barack Obama proclaimed that June was LGBT Pride Month in 2009 through 2016.

  • Kathy Griffin reveals shes under Secret Service investigation since Trump photo

Kathy Griffin has railed against “the Donald” after it is revealed she is under investigation by the secret service.

Kathy Griffin is apparently under investigation by the secret service after pictures of her holding a bloodied mask of Donald Trump’s head emerged on the Internet. The comic spoke about her life as a comedian during a press conference and accused the President of trying to ruin her career.

    She said,

“What’s happening to me has never happened,

“A sitting president of the United States and his grown children and the first lady are personally,

“I feel, trying to ruin my life forever.”

Griffin also went on to say that she didn’t think she’d have a career after the picture incident, but was not afraid of Trump and called him a bully. She said,

“I’m not afraid of Donald Trump,

“He’s a bully. I’ve dealt with older white guys trying to keep me down my whole life, my whole career. I am a woman in a very male-dominated field.”

She also revealed that she had received constant detailed death threats since the pictures were published.

The comedian apologised for the image earlier in the week, saying she said she had gone too far. President Donald Trump said that Griffin should be ashamed of herself and that his 11-year-old son, Barron Trump had been traumatised by the image.

  • Donald Trump tweets disgust at Kathy Griffin after “sick” decapitation picture

President Donald Trump has hit out at comedian Kathy Griffin after pictures of her holding a replica of his bloodied severed head emerged on the net.

Taking to Twitter Donald Trump called the picture sick and said that his youngest son, Barron, who is 11 was having a “hard time” with the picture.

In a video posted earlier today, Kathy Griffin said that she had “gone too far” after the picture of a decapitated President Trump attracted a major backlash from all sides of the political spectrum.

In the video, which she published on Twitter she said,

“I sincerely apologise. I’m just now seeing the reaction to these images. I’m a comic, I cross the line. I move the line, then I cross it. I went way too far. The image is too disturbing.

“I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny, I get it. I beg for your forgiveness, I went too far. I made a mistake and I was wrong.”

The picture even attracted the ire of Mr Trump’s son Donald Jump Jr. who said it was “disgusting but not surprising”.

Hillary Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea Clinton even said the picture was vile and wrong.

She’s not subtle and knows how to plug her products. We’ll give her that.

Caitlyn Jenner stood outside the White House to demand that Donald Trump read her book, suggesting that he might learn something.

Holding up a copy of her new book, in front of the White House, the Olympic turned reality TV star hinted that Donald would learn something if he read a copy.

It’s not known if Caitlyn dropped off a copy, but she did say that once he was done with it, Donald should give it to Jeff Sessions, the 84th Attorney General of the USA.

Jeff Sessions is considered to be one of the most conservative members of the US senate who has achieved a ZERO rating by the Human Rights Campaign.

Caitlyn’s book Secrets Of My Life has just been published. Speaking about the books she said, “Living authentically really is a wonderful thing”.
