LGBT education charity reveals horrific and sustained homophobic attacks on social media

The Scottish Time For Inclusive Education (TIE) Charity has outlined some of the attacks its volunteers and founders have had to deal with.

In a horrifying thread on Twitter, the TIE campaign has revealed the extent of abuse it has received from bigots on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. The charity said it had also been a victim of a campaign of lies about its work “to damage its reputation”.

    https://twitter.com/tiecampaign/status/1276931788103921664

The charity, which is based in Scotland, says it has been receiving attacks via social media platforms for months because they are an LGBT charity working with schools, teachers and educations.

The charity’s primary goal is to tackle “prejudice-based bullying” and to provide schools and educators with sessions on gender stereotypes/equalities and resources which help educators include LGBT+ people in the curriculum.

However, for months, volunteers say they have been targetted with “hurtful and dangerous posts and messages from “individuals who appear to be opposed to LGBT themes being included within education” an attack the charity describes as unprecedented.

    “Paedophiles, child abusers, groomers”

The posts include defamatory and homophobic rhetoric, which has made volunteers concerned for their safety.

Speaking about the threats, a statement from the charity said,

“For decades, the LGBT community has been subject to homophobic propaganda which paints us as a threat to children by claiming that we are paedophiles, child abusers, groomers. Until recently, we believed we had moved on from those dark days. Sadly this is not the case online.”

“They are trying to cause faux outrage & jeopardising our safety”

The co-founder’s own child was used in this smear campaign and pictures of the child were used across social media with the slogan “Say no to the indoctrination and sexualisation of our children”.

The charity says, “All of this is, obviously, untrue. We know a thing or two about LGBT history, so we understand that this is tactical homophobia: to throw as much mud as you can, & hope it tarnishes the org. They are trying to cause faux outrage & jeopardising our safety in the process….

“The truth is that some of these individuals are anti-LGBT. Others, however, have simply chosen to target us because we are trans-inclusive in our work. All of this started when proposals to reform the GRA (Gender Recognition Act) became a prominent topic of discussion on Twitter.”

    Twitter is a particular problem

TIE also pointed out that Twitter was a particularly problematic platform for them stating,

“This platform, in particular, is a problem. LGBT people and charities are regularly called groomers, paedophiles, abusers. This is unacceptable and horrific. @TwitterSupport needs to do more about this.

Twitter is a platform where homophobic and transphobic language is used constantly. Research THEGAYUK uncovered in 2018 showed that words such as “faggot” “dyke” and “no homo” are used millions of time a year.

The charity has said that it has taken legal advice.

  • COMMENT | Being homosexual is not a commodity you can buy online

COMMENT | Being homosexual is not a commodity you can buy online

I saw a homophobic comment on Twitter today that really made me angry and I just couldn’t keep my mouth shut. I had to retaliate.

“I don’t mind you lot being gay as long as you don’t promote it to my children.”

Oh yes, because it’s advertised on big billboards and television adverts. “BE GAY. BUY YOUR SEXUALITY ONLINE TODAY!” We even have Buy one Get One Free sales in some of the supermarkets. I don’t think. The idiocy and bigotry of some people really gets on my goat.

Have we not evolved enough by now that people cannot see? Homosexuality comes as part of your gene package. It’s not a choice or a bargain you can pick up in Harrods. The sheer fact that there are still many human beings who do not feel brave enough to ‘come out’ proves we cannot choose who we are. You cannot pick your sexuality. If you could, why do we hear these endless heartbreaking stories of people who commit suicide or are in ‘straight’ marriages just because they can’t face their homosexuality?

As for promoting it to children. I have three nephews. My eldest is almost 18 and we are incredibly close. When he was growing up, we would go to the theatre, football matches and restaurants together. At eight years old, he asked if I was gay. We never lied to him.

So he has lived in the knowledge that his Uncle Mark is gay for a decade. He has had a couple of sexual encounters with girls and a girlfriend. We obviously haven’t turned him gay by educating him about different sexualities from an early age. I’ve been surrounded by a football-mad family all my life. And I still can’t stand football.

So would this Twitter troll who says we should not promote homosexuality to children for fear we will turn them gay like to stand up please. And admit your statement is ludicrous and unfounded. Otherwise, why are my nephews not gay? Because you can’t choose it, that’s why.

What we are actually achieving by being honest and teaching children that not everyone conforms to the straight mould is enhancing the world with acceptance. And hopefully saving some of these poor souls who are too scared to accept their own sexuality.

In fact, I jokingly called myself a poof recently. My nephew and his same age best friend told me off for using such language. “It’s not PC!”, they shouted at me. Now that was refreshing.

And this is the kind of valuable gain we get from promoting homosexuality to children, Mr Twitter Troll.

  • Husbands give out rainbow masks in Poland’s notorious “LGBT Free Zones”

Husbands give out rainbow masks in Poland’s notorious “LGBT Free Zones”

Husbands Jakub and David took to the streets of Poland to give out rainbow face masks in the fight against Coronavirus and homophobia and the results were a mix of gratitude and threats of violence.

Poland has had a spotlight shone on its “LGBT Free Zones” recently and as LGBT+ rights are seemingly threatened in this part of Europe, the couple are keen to be visible and work with the public.

Jakub and David visited three LGBT FREE ZONES in East Poland – small towns called Mordy, Trzebieszów and Biała Podlaska. They gave away over 200 hundreds of rainbow masks in each spot.

Watching the movie you can see that it wasn’t very safe and anything could happen. Some people didn’t like the rainbow, one man threatened that he would punch their faces if they didn’t leave but the husband’s found most people’s reactions positive.

Giving away rainbow masks is Jakub’s and David’s way to fight against COVID 19 and homophobia in their country.

According to the last report of ILGA EUROPE – Poland is the worst country for LGBT people in the European Union so they still have plenty to do in their country

The attack happened near Piccadilly Circus, in London, on the 3rd March at 2.15 AM according to a police report.

The victim, a man in his mid-thirties was walking towards Picadilly Circus Tube station to see if it was closed, he asked three men nearby if they knew if the station was open or not. The men then shouted homophobic abuse at the victim.

The three men, all in their early 20s, are said to have then approached the victim and pushed him into the road. Once the victim was on the floor the group proceeded to assault him, according to a police statement.

The victim managed to run across the road towards the Hard Rock Café. The three men followed him and attacked him for a second time.

The group then left the scene in the direction of Shaftesbury Avenue.

The three men are all thought to be in their early 20s and maybe of Middle Eastern appearance. One of the men was wearing a distinctive light wash denim jacket with a white trim on the collar.

    “Unprovoked and vicious assault”

Investigating officer, Detective Constable John McNally, said, “This was a completely unprovoked and vicious assault on the victim, seemingly motivated by homophobia. Though thankfully not seriously injured, the victim has understandably been left very shaken by the incident.

“The Met takes a zero tolerance approach to homophobic crime; it is absolutely unacceptable that anyone should feel intimidated to go about their daily lives due to their sexual orientation.”

  • British gay film, Gods Own Country had its sex scenes removed on Amazon Prime

British gay film, Gods Own Country had its sex scenes removed on Amazon Prime

One of Britain’s most touching gay movies, God’s Own Country was gutted of its sex scenes and now some people are calling on Amazon Prime to be boycotted, however, it turns out that the cuts were made by the film’s distributor, not the streaming giant.

The film’s creator Francis Lee raised the alarm on Twitter, when it was noted by reviewers on the Amazon website that some of the sex scenes had been removed.

According to one of the reviews, at least two key scenes had been cut, one which included an oral sex scene and another which included an encounter with a third person.

Filmmaker Francis Lee initially took to Twitter to call for a boycott of Amazon Prime until he was given answers as to why the scenes were cut and that they weren’t showing the fil that he intended or made. He wrote,

Francis Lee@strawhousefilms Dear friends in USA, God’s Own Country appears to have been censored on @PrimeVideo (Amazon Prime). Until this is investigated please do not rent or buy on Amazon Prime. It is not the film I intended or made. I will report back

A few hours later he reported back, telling fans that after an investigation his film was not censored by Amazon Prime but by, he alleges, the US distributor, Samuel Goldwyn Films.

He claims that the distributor “butchered” the streaming version without consultation “to get more revenue”.

He added that Amazon Prime had been “incredibly supportive” in rectifying the issue.

Samuel Goldwyn films are responsible for distributing hit films such as Fisherman’s Friends and Supersize Me.

  • Netflix has epic clap back to tweet complaining about too many gay characters

Netflix has epic clap back to tweet complaining about too many gay characters

We love it when a company claps back, especially when it’s to someone who thinks there’s too much representation of minority communities. It’s the kind of allyship that our community really needs.

Whoever is controlling Netflix’ official Twitter account has some sass and has managed to put one raging viewer in their place.

It all happened after a user, apparently sick of seeing one too many “unnecessary gay characters” from Netflix, shared a meme demonstrating the force-feeding of gay characters onto audiences.

The Tweet was captioned “every damn series”.

The original tweet, from user @AdamSB___ managed to wake up the anti-gay trolls and unearthed some truly worrying comments from other users agreeing with the original Tweet and using homophobic language. Twitter remains a platform where homophobic is rampant, with thousands of anti-gay slurs used on a weekly basis.

However, the official Netflix account wasn’t having any of it and snapped back, “sorry you have yet to realize that every gay person is very necessary”.

The response from Netflix quickly overtook the original message with love and admiration from users and was retweeted over 53,000 times.

The Walking Dead star, Daniel Newman even responded to the Tweet saying, “Best ever” to Netflix.

Even Amazon’s Prime Video’s account got in on the love in for Netflix

    Corporate allyship that actually matters

Netflix’ response goes beyond slapping a rainbow on a company logo for pride month.

In 2019 we reported how nearly 40 per cent of companies who use the pride flag do not give back or pay forward to any LGBT+ groups, charities or organisations.

Police in London are looking for witnesses following on from alleged homophobic abuse at a football match at the London stadium.

Homophobic chanting was heard from a number of individuals during the match in the Sir Trevor Booking Stand at The London Stadium. It is believed to have involved home fans.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or can provide detectives with video footage is urged to come forward.

Inspector Matt Ashmead from the Met’s Public Order Investigation Team said, “We take allegations such as these extremely seriously and will act accordingly to any information brought to our attention. We work in partnership with the club and the stadium safety team to identify those who commit hate crime at football and we will take robust action against them.”

    Arrests Made

    (C) GOOGLE MAPS

Mr Ashmead continued, “With the assistance of law-abiding fans this weekend we were able to identify and arrest two individuals who were obtusely shouting homophobic abuse towards other supporters during this game. We welcome any further information or footage that would supply further evidence, or identify other offenders.

“Behaviour like this is completely unacceptable and perpetrators will be held accountable for their actions, so that the majority of law-abiding fans can enjoy a football game without the minority ruining their experience.

    Second Match This Year

This isn’t the first time the police have made a call for witnesses to homophobic abuse heard at a football match. Last week officers were appealing for witnesses and footage after a match official at a Millwall v Reading match was subjected to homophobic abuse.

“If you have any information or footage to support our investigation please call us on 020 8246 9386 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Boyfriends were apparently subjected to 30 minutes of homophobic abuse from a stranger on the streets of Glasgow on Burns Night.

Drew and his boyfriend were subjected to a horrifying homophobic ordeal on Burns night as they held hands in Glasgow, Scotland.

Lawyer Drew McCusker, 29, took to Twitter to explain that he and his boyfriend were subjected to a “really sh*t homophobic incident in Glasgow’s southside” which included them being called “bent bastards” and “f**king poofs”.

His tweet went viral within hours of his report.

According to Drew, he and his partner were holding hands when he alleges that a man walking passed them called them “a pair of bent bastards”.

When challenged, the man repeated what he had said, which is when a call was made to the police.

According to Drew, he spent 26 minutes on the phone with police as the man, he said, called the couple “bent bastards” “bent c*nts” “fucking poofs” “pair of poofs” and stating that it was “not fucking right two men sleeping together”

The man’s outrage continued to spew for 30 minutes, apparently telling passersby what he thought of the two boyfriends. An experience Drew has called ” hugely upsetting” and “humiliating”.

When the police arrived, the man was arrested and both Drew and his boyfriend gave separate statements.

The entire ordeal left Drew crying and deeply upset.

He said, “I don’t know if it was arrogance or hubris that made me think I wouldn’t be the victim of such an incident, or that it would upset me as much as it has.

“I’m still hurt by the demeaning language he hurled at us. He looked at, talked to and treated me like I was shit on a shoe. It felt awful.

“Today I feel confused about how to feel”

  • Customer outraged after being sent a homophobic slur in an email from ASOS

Customer outraged after being sent a homophobic slur in an email from ASOS

An ASOS customer has been left outraged after receiving a discount code from the online clothing giant.

When Eric Omikunle opened a birthday email sent by ASOS containing a discount code he thought “how sweet and kind” – that was until he noticed the gay slur in the code itself.

The clothing company, which also made Pride In London’s clothing range in 2019, had indeed sent him a 10 per cent off discount code, however, to Eric’s disgust the code contained a three-letter anti-gay slur, “FAG”

The code that Eric was sent, in full, was “FAG162NV7S23”

ASOS prides itself on being diverse and inclusive, but this blunder has left one customer feeling outraged and disappointed. (SOURCE: ASOS Frontpage).

Eric says that he had reached out to ASOS but was left with a “resolution” that he was happy with.

ASOS Here To Help, ASOS’s online Twitter handle, replied, that it was “just a generated code” and invited Eric to DM them if he had a complaint to make.

    https://twitter.com/ASOS_HeretoHelp/status/1214245708628471818

In a statement to THEGAYUK as spokesperson for ASOS said, “We are very sorry that this has  happened and caused offense.

“Because of the volume issued the codes need to be automated and generated by a IT program.

We are looking at solutions to prevent this from happening again”.

  • A reminder to straight people going to a LGBT+ club this party season

A reminder to straight people going to a LGBT+ club this party season

    Free-Photos / Pixabay

    “be an ally and respectful”

Gaydio presenter Matt Crabb has an important message to anyone who doesn’t identify as LGBT+ but who is partying at a gay club/bar this Christmas / New Year after he was homophobically abused while working as a DJ at a venue in Manchester.

The message is simple, “you’re a guest” and to be an ally and respect the place and its staff.

The presenter was working as a DJ at an LGBT venue when he had his earphones ripped off and was homophobically abused and called a “f*ggot” by a customer, who also demanded that he stop playing “gay sh*t”.

Luckily the club’s management and security was on hand and acted swiftly, removing the bigot from the club.

    Matt wrote,

“Just a reminder to some straight people this Christmas. You are guests in our #LGBT venues. We are not an attraction, we are not here for you to be rude too or disrespectful. Don’t climb on the stage when you’ve been told not to…

Don’t pull the headphones off the DJ when they are trying to work, don’t tell them to stop playing ‘gay shit’ and call them a faggot when they won’t play your request.

“I’ve had to deal with all the above in the last 48 hours, it’s not fun. Do… come and party with us

Be an ally and respectful, tip bar staff and compliment entertainers on doing a good job

    “This is a common occurrence”

    rihaij / Pixabay

Speaking to THEGAYUK Matt Crabb said that after the incident “security were called and they removed instantly”

He went on to reveal that abuse like this is a common occurrence in gay bars across the country.

Matt told us “It happens a lot in venues at this time of year, I’ve spoken to over friends who DJ on the scene in London/Cardiff who have similar stories”.
