  • Pink News adds £50 membership option allowing users to add comments to its site

It seems comment isn’t free anymore.

PinkNews is adding a membership tier to its website, which will allow readers amongst other privileges to post comments on its site.

Adding comments, an “ad lite” experience and exclusive access to investigations and reporting are just some of the highlights the site says will become the honour of those who become MyPinkNews members.

PinkNews was forced to close its comment section after it said it was deluged with “large levels of transphobia, homophobia and racism by trolls”. When the new membership tier rolls out fully, everyone will be able to read the comments, but only those who have paid will be able to comment on stories. Commenters will also be controlled by a raft of restrictions aimed at keeping abuse of the website.

The website, which serves around 3.2 million people a month on its website, according to Similarweb, admitted that selling adverts on its site had become more difficult as Coronavirus decimates the marketing budgets of companies across the globe.

It wrote, “Now is a very hard time to be selling advertising. The majority of the ads that you see are sold programmatically, which we feel offers users a poor experience…. MyPinkNews users will not be shown display advertising aside from occasional public health or similar messaging.”

The site said that it wouldn’t be paywalling its content as it conflicts with their mission statement and says that adding the yearly £50 subscription will funding investigations and analysis / commentary.

PinkNews is the first UK-based LGBT+ news outlet to install a subscription service of this nature.

  • Piers Morgan calls PinkNews “disingenuous click-baiting little twerps”

Piers Morgan calls PinkNews “disingenuous click-baiting little twerps”

Piers Morgan has lashed out against PinkNews after it published an article about a petition calling on ITV execs to remove him from his presenting position on Good Morning Britain for “dehumanising” people from the transgender and non-binary community.

In a series of fiery tweets, Piers blasted the news site as “disingenuous” and clickbaity after it published a piece about a petition which called for the GMB anchor to be fired from his presenting position on the ITV morning show.

He also blasted the site for “spreading dangerous bullsh*t” and reiterated that they were shameless little clickbaiters

At the time of PinkNews’s first article, calling for his dismissal, around 6000 people had signed the petition calling on ITV to end its contract with Piers Morgan.

The petition has since swelled to around 13,000 signatures.

    “Dehumansing”

Piers is accused by the petitioners of “dehumanising” some transgender and non-binary people with his line of questioning of non-binary guests and his dismissal of the notion that there are over 100 different gender identities, Piers is currently identifying as a “2 spirit penguin”.

However, Piers claims that he supports those people who transition and that he is a loud supporter of gay rights.

The presenter added, “I don’t support the ridiculous notion of 100 genders, and most sensible people agree with me.”

    People actually like Piers

In response to the initial petition calling on Piers to be fired, is another, calling on ITV to back the presenter which has now surpassed the original with over 26,000 signatures.

  • Jeremy Corbyn: People choose to be gay

The Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn seems to think that gay people “chose” their sexuality after he made a speech at LGBT History Month event.

Opps. Jeremy Corbyn seems to think that the LGBT community has chosen its sexuality in a gaffe at the launch of LGBT History Month.

During his launch speech, he said,

“We’re with you, we’re in solidarity with you,’ he said. ‘Your triumphs are our triumphs.

“Our defence of you is a defence of all of humanity and the right of people to practise the life they want to practise, rather than be criminalised, brutalised and murdered, simply because they chose to be gay, they chose to be lesbian, they were LGBT in any form.”

You can watch the video over at PINKNEWS Facebook.

The video was shot by PinkNews who shared the video via their Facebook page.  According to The Sun, the CEO of PinkNews, Benjamin Cohen said the remarks “were being taken out of context”.

A spokesperson for Jeremy Corbyn said to PinkNews,

“Jeremy clearly doesn’t believe that being gay is a choice.

“Jeremy obviously meant people should be able to choose how they live their lives.”

“Obviously” seems to be a strange word in this context… because obviously, the video evidence seems to suggest something else.

People on social media were quick to condem his choice of words, with one saying that his words had “crumbled” her heart.

  • Gay News Site Proud To Re-Publish Charlie Hebdo Muslim Gay Kiss

In a defiant move, PinkNews has re-published a picture that depicts a controversial cartoon showing murdered editor Stephane Charbonnier French kissing a Muslim man.

Yesterday, (7th January) Paris was rocked to its core when up to three masked men stormed the Charlie Hebdo offices and murdered 8 staff members, including the editor Stephane Charbonnier. Charlie Hebdo is a satirical magazine that has in the past published pictures that have been considered offensive to some Muslims.

Twelve people have now known to have died from the shootings, including two police officers, a caretaker and guest at magazine’s offices. The majority of those killed were staff members who were in their morning editorial meeting. Four of the staff were cartoonists for the magazine, which has been running since 1970.

Despite the massacre, the publishers at Charlie Hebdo have announced that they will go ahead and publish next week’s issue.

The magazine has previously been targeted with a firebomb attack in 2011 and cyber terrorism for its editorial decision in showing content considered to be controversial.

In defiance, PinkNews said that it was proud to republish a controversial picture which showed the late editor kissing a Muslim man, in an article which shows powerful cartoon responses to the terror attack in Paris. The wording above the picture state: “Love Is Stronger Than Hate.”

    A PinkNews spokesperson said,

“The PinkNews editorial team decided to repost the cartoon simply to send the message that love is stronger than hate. This applies to all forms of prejudice, including homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia and to any extremism against the West.

“In the end it is positivity and love which will always trump evil and hate.”

Well occupying the top spot is Joel Simkhai’s ubiquitous Grindr App, which has dominated the App scene for a few years now. What started off as a personal hookup App for Simkhai, has literally changed the way gay men date around the globe. Last year we had a chat with the genius behind Grindr – read the interview here.

Bashing. We wrote about this App a short while ago and initially weren’t sure what to think, however on reflection, Bashing is a brilliant App to bring visibility to the hundreds of gay bashings that happen across the world. The developers say, “Sometimes it seems like homophobia is claiming the streets. And in order to address this problem, people need to know what happens and where.”

Pinknews. It’s a must for every gay on the go, keeping you abreast of the homophobic happenings across the globe. Contributed to by a team of journalists Pinknews has won a number of awards for its content and it’s a free App too!

My Free Gay Agenda, is a powerful personal calendar app. What we love about the MGA App is its “Today In Gay” feature, which gives you ‘a daily historical synopsis of key “historical events” from the gay community. Insightful – and apparently today in 2005 Alan Cumming launched his fragrance ‘Cumming’ at Fred Segal in Los Angeles.
