  • Government to “de-medicalise” the transition process

The UK’s Government has announced radical new plans to “streamline and de-medicalise” the process by which transgender people can have their gender legally recognised quicker and easier.

Today Justine Greening, the Minister for Women and Equalities announced plans that would end the medical process by which trans people must currently navigate in order to legally change their gender. In the announcement laid out today, people will no longer need a diagnosis of gender dysphoria or to prove that they have been in transition for two years before they can apply to legally change their gender.

Minister for Women and Equalities Justine Greening said,

“This government is committed to building an inclusive society that works for everyone, no matter what their gender or sexuality and today we’re taking the next step forward.

“We will build on the significant progress we have made over the past 50 years, tackling some of the historic prejudices that still persist in our laws and giving LGBT people a real say on the issues affecting them.”

Removing stigma from the Gender Recognition Act

The consultation on the Gender Recognition Act, to be published in the Autumn will look to improve the recognition process and reduce the stigma faced by the trans community. Proposals will include, removing the need for medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria, which is currently necessary in order to change a person’s legal gender. Proposals for streamlining the entire process will also be discussed.

Trans advocate and Labour party candidate in East Worthing and Shoreham in the 2017 General Election Sophie Cook applauded the cross-party approach saying,

“The Gender Recognition Act forces people to jump through hoops and undergo deeply personal and intimate examination of their life including medical evidence and, if you’re married, a declaration from your spouse in order to gain a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC).

Since I transitioned in 2015 I have faced prejudice, abuse and even death threats and it’s time for Parliament to recognise the challenges that trans people face and work to eradicate bigotry in all of its forms.

Despite, very obviously, being my true self and living my life in my true gender I do not have a GRC.

My passport, driving license and all other documents identify me as female and yet under the law without a GRC my rights could potentially be in danger.

There have been cases of trans women losing their lives because the lack of a GRC placed them in harm’s way, most notably inside our prison system.

In the Labour manifesto we recognised that the act was out of date and pledged to change it and I’m pleased to see that the government is moving ahead with this reform.

Everyone should be afforded the right to self-identification, no doctor, judge or politician can presume to know more about an individuals identity than they do themselves.”

  • Vince Cable becomes new leader of the Liberal Democrats

The new leader of the Liberal Democrats has been announced as Sir Vince Cable after no challengers stepped forward.

Vince Cable becomes new leader of the Liberal Democrats

Sir Vince Cable, 74,  has been revealed as the new leader of the Liberal Democrats after Tim Farron stepped down as the leader shortly after the General Election.  Tim Farron faced a lot of criticism during the general election due to his dismal ability to answer questions on the sinfulness of being gay and gay sex. Although the Liberal Democrats managed to increase their number of seats from nine to 12 Farron’s leadership failed to ignite the passion at the ballot box despite record levels of membership for the party.

Mr Cable is the MP for Twickenham and was the only candidate on the ballot paper for the leadership contest.

    Vince Cable On Gay Rights

Vince Cable has a good history when it comes to his pro-gay rights voting history and has always voted in the positive – including reducing the age of consent and on the repeal of Section 28. He has never negatively voted on an LGBT+ rights issue.

However, he has, according to TheyWorkForYou.com been absent from a number of votes. Analysis of his voting history shows that Vince Cable was absent from 12 votes between 1999 and 2014.

    ForeFront of LGBT+ Equality

Speaking to THEGAYUK the LGBT+ Lib Dem group said that Sir Vince would keep the Liberal Democrats at the “forefront of LGBT+ equality”. They also said they would work with him to work on PrEP availability, transgender rights and the situation in Chechnya.

  • Theresa May left Peter Tatchell off the guest list for a bash celebrating LGBT life in the UK

The UK’s highest profile LGBT rights advocate has once again been left off the invite list for a 10 Downing Street reception which is honouring LGBT contributions to the UK.

Theresa May left Peter Tatchell off the guest list for a bash celebrating LGBT life in the UK

Peter Tatchell has once again been “vetoed” from a bash hosted by the UK’s Prime Minister Theresa May at 10 Downing Street today. Despite these receptions taking place every year for the last 16 years, Mr Tatchell has never once been invited – despite his tireless advocacy for the LGBT+ community in the UK.

Peter Tatchell spoke out against his “blacklisting” today saying that he took it as a “back-handed compliment” and suggested that Ms May might think him “too challenging” or not “respectable enough”.

Commenting on his “serial exclusion” Peter Tatchell said:

“I take my blacklisting as a back-handed compliment. The Prime Minister obviously thinks I am too challenging and not respectable enough to be invited. That’s fine by me.

“I don’t seek invites to Downing Street or government honours. I would not want to go to Downing Street while the Prime Minister teams up with the homophobic DUP, allows the incarceration of LGBT refugees in asylum detention centres and refuses to tackle homophobic bullying by making LGBT issues mandatory in every school.

“Theresa May doesn’t want to be confronted about such injustices. That’s probably the reason she had me barred.

“I’m glad she finds me threatening.

“My goal in life is to disturb the conscience of government. I don’t want their plaudits or hospitality. I want action for LGBT human rights”.

THEGAYUK reached out for comment from 10 Downing Street on why Mr Tatchell had been excluded only to be told that Downing Street had chosen members of the LGBT+ community that “represents a wide cross section of society”.

    A Downing street Spokesperson said,

“We are hosting a reception in Downing Street to celebrate the contribution that lesbian, gay, bi and trans people make to our country. We have invited members of the LGBT+ community from the charitable sector, the media, the armed services and the worlds of business, sports and politics which represents a wide cross section of society.”

  • From April 2018 the government is going to restrict access to porn

From April 2018 you will have to prove your age before accessing porn sites in the UK.

From April 2018 the government is going to restrict access to porn

The Conservative government are forging ahead with plans to require adults in the UK to prove they are over 18 before accessing porn sites. Digital minister Matt Hancock signed the commencement order today, which will enable the Digital Economy Act.

Although no details about how the scheme could or would work, experts have suggested that proof of age could be provided by credit card details. The government could force Internet Service Providers such as BT and Virgin Media to block access to websites which do not comply with the new rules.

The rules will apply to any website or platform which offers porn on a “commercial basis”.

It is hoped that the measures will protect children from online porn.

The Adam Smith Institute has reacted in dismay over the news.

Sam Dumitriu, Research Economist at the Adam Smith Institute, said,

“Requiring adult websites to force users to provide their credit card details poses a dangerous threat to privacy and will enable widespread credit card fraud.

“Consenting adults shouldn’t be forced to announce that they’re looking at pornography to their credit card company.

“There are massive fraud risks. It could mean that users are nudged into handing over data to unsafe sites – leaving them at the risk of fraud. Pornography is especially attractive to fraudsters as victims are often too embarrassed to flag up unexpected payments to adult sites to their credit card company.

“Politicians should stop trying to regulate things they don’t understand.”

In December 2014 pornography produced in the UK was subject to strict rules under the David Cameron’s Tory government. The types of scenes which studios could film were severely restricted with an amendment to the 2003 Communications Act.

Some of the activities banned by the Conservative government could overtly affect the porn consumption of gay men in the UK – including those who watch BDSM, rimming (facesitting) and fisting.

  • Theresa May suspends anti-gay equality, N word MP Anne Marie Morris

The UK’s Prime Minister, Theresa May, has suspended Anne Marie Morris after she used the N-word at Brexit discussion yesterday.

Theresa May has suspended the Conservative MP Anne Marie Morris after she used a vile racist expression “n***** in the woodpile”.

    The whip was also removed.

Speaking about the MP’s speech, Ms May said, “I was shocked to hear of these remarks, which are completely unacceptable, I immediately asked the Chief Whip to suspend the party whip. Language like this has absolutely no place in politics or in today’s society.”

The MP for Newton Abbott had been speaking about Brexit where she said,

“Now I’m sure there will be many people who’ll challenge that, but my response and my request is look at the detail, it isn’t all doom and gloom,

“Now we get to the real n***** in the woodpile, which is, in two years, what happens if there is no deal?”

The recording was unearthed by HuffPost who said that the Brexit-backing MP utter the disgraceful phrase, which has its origins in the late 19th and 20th century, as she described the idea of leaving the EU with no deal.

Ms Morris has offered an “unreserved” apology saying she was sorry for “any offence caused” by her “entirely unintentional” racism.

Calls for anti-gay marriage MP Anne Marie Morris to resign after vile racist

Anne Marie Morris is under fire for using a racist phrase during a Brexit debate.

Conservative MP Anne Marie Morris who voted against same-sex marriage in 2013 and was absent from a number of other same-sex marriage votes, is facing calls for her resignation after uttering a vile, racist phrase during a Brexit discussion which was recorded by a journalist in attendance.

The recording was unearthed by HuffPost today who said that the Brexit-backing MP uttered the disgraceful phrase, which has its origins in the late 19th and 20th century, as she described the idea of leaving the EU with no deal.

Ms Morris has offered an “unreserved” apology saying she was sorry for “any offence caused” by her “entirely unintentional” racism. The MP used the phrase, “And then we get to the real n***** in the woodpile which is in two years what happens if there is no deal?

A spokesperson for the Conservative Party said they are “urgently investigating” stating that they were aware of the reports.

Numerous people have called for Ms Morris to have the whip removed from her, which would mean that she would effectively stand as an independent candidate for her constituency.

Guardian columnist Owen Jones has effectively called for the MP’s expulsion.

Ms Morris assumed office in May 2010 and managed to increase her majority in the 2017 General Election from 11288 to 17160 votes.

  • Britain’s highest ranking LGBT+ politician sends a message before Pride In London

Conservative politician, Justine Greening the UK’s highest ranking openly LGBT+ MP has reached out to the community before the UK’s biggest Pride tomorrow.

Minister for Women and Equalities Justine Greening said:

“I am delighted to support this year’s Pride celebrations, a key moment to show how far LGBT people have come in the fight for equality. It is also a chance to showcase our country’s values of tolerance, acceptance and openness to the rest of the world.

“It is also a reminder of the work we still have to do to stamp out homophobic bullying and hate crime, which can have such a damaging impact on LGBT people’s lives. That is why we’re working with a range of partners such as Stonewall, Barnardo’s and LGBT Consortium to stamp out anti-LGBT bullying in our schools. We are educating young people about accepting and respecting each other’s individuality with a £3m anti-LGBT bullying programme and we are investing £300,000 as part of the cross-government Hate Crime Action Plan in programmes to tackle hate crime in communities.

“I hope everyone across the country has a fantastic time celebrating Pride and the progress we’ve made in the fight for equality, as we build a fairer, more equal future for everyone.”

  • Justin Trudeau wore brilliant Eid Mubarak socks

In a powerful show of unity, Canada’s President, Justin Trudeau was reaching out to more than just the gay community this past weekend.

As Toronto Pride was in full swing this year, Canadian President, Justin Trudeau was doing his bit. Proudly waving and joining in with the festivities, but it was what was under his trousers that caused the biggest stir.

To celebrate the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Mr Trudeau wore brightly coloured socks with “Eid Muburak” written across them. Eid Murburak means Blessed Eid which is a traditional Muslim greeting reserved for use on the festivals of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr. The word Eid means”celebration” and Mubarak means “blessed”.

Speaking about his decision to wear the socks President Trudeau said,

“It is all about including people.

“This is why I am happy to wish a Eid Muburak to everyone of the Muslim faith.

“It’s all about how we celebrate the multiple layers of identities that make Canada extraordinary and strong, and today we celebrate with the entire LGBTQ community.”

Last year President Trudeau became the first President to take part in an LGBT+ parade and since his inauguration, he has overseen progressive equality legislation for the LGBT+ community.

  • SNP seeks assurances from Theresa May that the DUP won’t halt LGBT+ equality

The SNP has sought assurances from the government that LGBT+ equality would be preserved and advanced after the Conservative Party struck a deal with Northern Ireland’s anti-gay Democratic Unionist Party.

SNP Equalities spokesperson Angela Crawley said the Tories “have questions to answer” on equality after a confidence and supply deal was struck yesterday between the Government and the DUP which would keep Prime Minister Theresa May in power without formalising a coalition.

The DUP “agrees to support the Government on all motions of confidence and on the Queen’s speech; the budget; finance bills’ money bills, supply and appropriation legislation and Estimates,” as well as any legislation pertaining to Brexit. In return, a “coordination committee” will be convened to “ensure the necessary support can be established by both parties,” which could give the DUP say on any bills the government seeks to introduce.

“LGBTI people across the country have deep concerns that the Tory backroom deal with the DUP could halt progress on equality,” Ms Crawley said. “Before the election, Theresa May and Ruth Davidson both committed to changes in the law to improve LGBTI equality – but these commitments were entirely absent from the Queen’s Speech,” she said.

Davidson, the leader of the Scottish Conservatives, earlier this month said that she had been assured that the deal would not hinder LGBT+ rights. “I asked for categoric assurance that if any deal or scoping deal was done with the DUP there would be absolutely no recession of LGBTI rights in the rest of the UK, in Great Britain, and that we would use any influence that we had to advance LGBTI rights in Northern Ireland,” she told the BBC. “It’s an issue very close to my heart and one that I wanted categoric assurances from the prime minister on, and I received [them].”

The DUP themselves have promised that they have no desire to roll back equality measures elsewhere in the country. “We want to ensure that every one of the LGBT community have rights and their rights will be maintained, the DUP equality spokesman Jim Shannon told Premier Christian Radio. “There’s going to be no changes to that whatsoever.”

Still, the DUP’s opposition to same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland – which it has used peace deal powers to oppose – and support for a “conscience clause” to allow businesses to discriminate against LGBT people on religious grounds has caused concern for many activists. Protests against the deal have occurred since the election resulted in a hung parliament, with the campaigner and Guardian columnist Owen Jones warning that “an alliance with the gay-hating DUP extremists threatens the Northern Ireland peace process”

It could also threaten progress on LGBT rights, warns the SNP. “Will the Tories finally amend same-sex marriage legislation to allow couples from Northern Ireland, and elsewhere, to convert their civil partnerships to marriage? If not, why not?” asked Angela Crawley, who also wanted to know if the government will extend discrimination protections to all LGBTI people and eliminate inequality in pension rights, as well as extending gender recognition reforms passed by Holyrood to the rest of the UK.

Indeed, the DUP has already sought to interfere with LGBT rights in Scotland. Arlene Foster, the DUP leader and erstwhile First Minister of Scotland, sought to prevent Northern Irish citizens from accessing same-sex marriages in Scotland. Scotland allows couples from Northern Ireland (and elsewhere) to convert their civil partnerships to marriage without having to first legally divorce.

Foster expressed her opposition to this in a series of letters to former Scotland minister for community empowerment, Marco Biagi. She said that she sought to achieve “legal certainty” over the status of same-sex couples by “exclude[ing] civil partnership[s] which were entered into in Northern Ireland” from being converted to marriages. For his part, Biagi tweeted simply “I said no” to this request.

Whether Foster and the DUP seek to interfere with LGBT equality through their new deal with the Conservatives and their place on the “co-ordination committee” between the parties remains to be seen. Regardless, Crawley plans to fight to ensure progress continues. “The SNP will continue to champion LGBTI equality in government at Holyrood, and SNP MPs will hold the Tory government to account at Westminster so that LGBTI equality does not fall of the agenda,” she said.

It’s not just publicly that the SNP is defending LGBT+ rights. In a letter to Prime Minister Theresa May, Crawley expressed “concerns that LGBTI equality is being sidelined for reasons of political expediency.” She outlined a series of policies – from strengthening the Turing Law to ensure all those convicted of having gay sex are pardoned to devolving equality law to Holyrood – where the SNP feels the government must act. Whether Theresa May champions equality or the DUP exerts its influence to halt any advances, though, remains to be seen.

  • Here’s all the things that Trump said June was the official month for… none of them LGBT Pride

President Donald Trump has proclaimed that June is the official month for so many things… so so many things, just not Pride.

    Is Donald Trump homophobic

So Donald Trump has said that June is the official month for

    • Great Outdoors Month

A press release was sent from the White House on the 31st May, proclaiming that June 2017 was the Great Outdoors Month.

    • National Caribbean-American Heritage Month

Another press release sent on the 31st May was earmarked as the National Caribbean-American Heritage Month.

    • African-American Music Appreciation Month

    Ditto: African-American Music Appreciation Month

    • National Ocean Month

To celebrate “the mighty oceans and their extraordinary resources,” Donald Trump said that June was the national month for Oceans.

    • National Home Ownership Month

You know Home Owners – they need a month to recognise their struggles

He also declared that June was the official month for Father’s day and National Flag Week.

Of course, all these things are important and need their recognition, no one denies that… but come on Prez where’s the love for the LGBT+ community?

The White House has yet to acknowledge Pride in the US. Rewind to last year when Trump reached out to the LGBT+ community during his campaigning to let them know he was keen to protect LGBT equality and rights.

    He said,

“As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology,

“As a Republican, I’m so happy to hear you cheering for what I just said.”

Most LGBT Pride events take place across the US in the month of June… It was chosen to commemorate the Stonewall Riots which happened at the end of June 1969. President Bill Clinton was the first US President to declare June as “Gay & Lesbian Pride Month” on June 2, 2000. President Barack Obama proclaimed that June was LGBT Pride Month in 2009 through 2016.

  • Conservatives sign a deal with anti-LGBT DUP

Theresa May’s Government has signed a deal with the anti-LGBT Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

An agreement between the two parties will mean that the DUP‘s 10 ministers will support the Conservative minority Government. However, the deal falls short of a formal coalition.

The Conservatives failed to achieve an overall majority in the recent General Election, securing 318 seats. A party needs 326 seats in order to have a majority in the UK. A deal with the DUP could ensure an extra 10 votes.

The Conservatives have said it will find an extra £1.5 billion in funding for Northern Ireland as part of the agreement.

Speaking about the partnership, the DUP’s leader, Arlene Foster said she was, “delighted that we have reached this agreement, which I think works, obviously, for national stability.”

The DUP has a long history as an anti-gay party. Its founder, the Rev Ian Paisley spearheaded the Save Ulster from Sodomy in the 1970s, which was opposed to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Northern Ireland, in fact, Northern Ireland was the last country within the UK to decriminalise homosexuality, which it did so in 1982. Paisley’s son, Ian Paisley Jr said that he was “repulsed” by homosexuality.

More recently the struggle to achieve marriage equality was stalled for the LGBT+ community in Northern Ireland. The same-sex marriage bill has been voted upon four times in Northern Ireland. Each time equality for NI’s LGBT community has been frustrated by the DUP. It is the only part of the UK which does not provide same-sex marriage to its citizens.

The DUP has said that it is not homophobic but holds traditional views when it comes to marriage.

Taking to Twitter, the leader of the opposition, Jeremy Corbyn said that the deal was not done in the national interest, but in the interest of the PM and the Conservatives own “political survival”.
