  • Could Alan Turing be the face for the new £50 note?

Could Alan Turing be the face for the new £50 note?

There are calls to make Alan Turing the face of the new £50 to serve as a “painful reminder of what we lost.”

    Alan Turing
    Public Domaain

The Bank of England has invited members of the public to vote on which figure should appear on the new £50 note.

Former Manchester MP John Leech led a nearly decade-long campaign to pardon Alan Turing, gaining immense public support from legendary physicists such as Stephen Hawking.

During the campaign, Mr Leech submitted several bills to Parliament saying it was “utterly disgusting and ultimately just embarrassing” that the conviction was upheld as long as it was, and celebrated the posthumous pardon.

He then turned to acquiring pardons for the 75,000 other men convicted of the same outdated crime.

At the UK premiere of a film based on Turing’s life, The Imitation Game, the producers thanked Mr Leech for bringing the topic to public attention and securing Turing’s pardon.

Supporting Turing for the new £50 note John Leech said, “It is almost impossible to put into words the difference that Alan Turing made to society, but perhaps the most poignant example is that his work is estimated to have shortened the war by four years and saved 21 million lives.

“And yet way he was treated afterwards remains a national embarrassment and an example of society at its absolute worst.

“Placing Turing on the £50 note would at least go some way to acknowledging his unprecedented contribution to society and science.

“But more importantly it will serve as a stark and frankly painful reminder of what we lost in Turing and what we will lose again if we ever allow that kind of hateful ideology to win.”

  • Grey’s Anatomy star comes out as gay

Twenty-seven-year-old actor Jake Borelli came out via Instagram the same night as his character on the show Grey’s Anatomy.

Jake Borelli, took time on Thursday to write a heart-warming message on social media after his character, Dr Levi Schmitt, on the long-running TV drama, Grey’s Anatomy embarked on a same-sex love story. The actor wrote how he “craved” as a young person, storylines like the one his character is involved with and hoped that the character would bring hope to others.

Taking to Instagram the star wrote, “As a gay guy myself, tonight’s episode was so special to me. This is exactly the kind of story I craved as a young gay kid growing up in Ohio, and it blows my mind that I’m able to bring life to Dr. Levi Schmitt as he begins to grapple with his own sexuality this season on Grey’s Anatomy. His vulnerability and courage inspire me every day, and I hope he can do the same for you”.

Borelli continued, “To all of you who feel like little Levis out there, know that I do too, that you are seen, and that we’re all in this together. And to everyone who has supported me over the years, I can’t thank you enough, and I love you more than all the stars…”

The actor also spoke to Entertainment Weekly about opening up about his sexuality, saying that he was already out to his wider circle of friends and family, “I’ve been out to my friends and family for almost 10 years now, but within the last couple of months of shooting the show and really getting to know this character and seeing the response, I’ve realised that this is becoming bigger than just me,” he told the outlet.

“Within the last year or so, I’ve been given the opportunity to speak on a much larger platform. With that opportunity, I am able to come out to a much larger group of people”.

The post was liked 25,000 times over 12 hours and the actor received scores of supportive messages from fans.

It’s not unusual for guys to give their penises names, but some of these names are just plain unsexy… Channing Tatum, we’re looking at you doll. Now, most guys probably just plump for a run of the mill name, with “little” in front, but some have gone for dessert names, infamous racists and one has gone for the world’s largest mammal. The mind boggles.

    Anyway here’s the list.

  • Has Facebook deleted Milo Yiannopoulos?

    Has Facebook deleted Milo Yiannopoulos?

It looks as though Facebook has deleted Milo Yiannopoulos’s page on the platform.

Having amassed a whopping 2.3 million likes on Facebook it seems Milo Yiannopoulos‘s page has been suspended from the social media giant. The page went missing on the 30th October, with the controversial public speaker and journalist taking to his Instagram account to upload a picture of his page on Facebook – now an error holding page saying “this is a new one”.

Now when a visitor now goes Yiannopoulos’s page on Facebook they are greeted with a standard, “sorry, something went wrong” page.

Milo is no stranger to being banned from social media, he was first unverified then removed from Twitter in 2016.

To top it all of, the mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio requested that a talk about the politics of Halloween to be given at NYU by Yiannopoulos be rescheduled. Yiannopoulos wrote, that he was “without question the most censored man in America”, before saying that the 1st Amendment, the free speech amendment in the US was dead.

Yiannopoulos revealed last week that Facebook allegedly told him to take some of his statuses down claiming that he was supporting terrorism, saying, “This is why you don’t see me jump on current affairs and be present these days. I can’t express the same opinions that even other conservatives do. I don’t want to lose these accounts or leave Facebook and Instagram. But they’re basically instructing me what jokes I can make and what opinions I can have at this point, capriciously, arbitrarily and inconsistently, doing the bidding of SJW journalists”.

On Instagram, he wrote, “The entire city of New York is terrified of one gay man stepping out of line and calling out the Left as the intolerant, censorious crybabies they are. And they just proved it—by censoring me again. I couldn’t ask for more conclusive proof: The Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, today demanded my talk at NYU be canceled (“rescheduled” in their euphemistic language) and the President of NYU has complied. So. It’s not happening. I’ll post my talk online tomorrow instead. RIP, First Amendment. They’re not even pretending any more”.

  • This is what Michael Buble said his penis looked like when he was a little heavier

    Celebs and their schlongs…

    ©-Jean_Nelson-Depositphotos

Some celebs give them names, some talk about their size, some, like Michael Buble, give a vivid mental image of what they look like. Buble was joining James Corden for a Carpool Karaoke when the Canadian crooner shared what he thought his penis looked like when it was a little heavier.

For those of you who don’t know Buble has lost a little weight recently and Corden remarked how great the singer was looking to which Buble replied, “There’s a fat Buble, a chinny Buble and then there’s a ‘Hey, I’ve got a record coming out maybe I should stop eating those Slurpees. I don’t care how I look I got a beautiful woman who loves me.’”

This is when Buble managed to create the everlasting image of what his dick looked like when he was fatter. He said, “I feel like when you’re smaller your penis looks bigger. Because when you’re bigger like that it looks like a buoy sitting in the middle of an ocean.”

  • Martyn Hett’s brother just released a game based on his experience of the digital death knock

The brother of a man who was killed in a terrorist bombing has released a game which shows how distressing it can be when journalists bombard victim’s families with requests for news and interviews.

You may remember the story of Martyn Hett, a PR manager who was killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester in 2017. Martyn was Dan’s brother, who in the days following the attack, was bombarded with a barrage of messages on social media from well-wishers and journalistics alike eager to know any news about Martyn.

In journalism, “the death knock”, as it’s frequently known as, is where someone from a news outlet visits the home of the bereaved to find out more details about a victim’s life or cause of death. However, as more and more people are on social media, “the death knock” has gone digital.

Moments after a major incident, those who are tweeting about it and who are in the vicinity of the upset are often besieged with tweets from journalists from all the major networks looking for more information. These often come in the form of picture permission requests or live interviews.

Hett has released a game called “Sorry To Bother You” a short video which shows what happened to him after the death of his brother.

Writing on the game’s homepage Hett wrote, “Sorry To Bother You is a short videogame that details a real experience: specifically, the massive influx of thousands of messages following the unexpected death of my brother Martyn in the 2017 Manchester Arena terror attack. The game tasks players with isolating the messages that are actually journalist requests (sometimes quite thinly-veiled ones).  To do this, respond to each message by hitting the heart icon, or the trash can – ‘like’ the real messages, and trash the journalist ones”.

Speaking to Buzzfeed News Hett said, “It was one of the things that underpinned the experience and made it a lot more difficult,

“If I wanted people to take anything away from it, it’s just for it to become a talking point – I’ve had a few of the original journalists reach out saying ‘I was one of the thousands of people and it’s made me reconsider and re-think, and we need to do better’.

“The game’s not offering a solution, it’s a direct observation from me. And if that’s a starter for 10 for even one journalist to go away and think there must be a better way of doing this, I think that’s important.

“Probably more than most I understand the need to tell a story, we’re news-hungry people, that stuff has to happen – but the aim of the game is to show the way in which it’s done during unfolding events is not OK.”

  • Sean Pratt’s underwear leaves NOTHING to the imagination

Reality TV star Sean Pratt’s underwear isn’t concealing much

Sean Pratt has released a photo onto Instagram which has basically left many of his fans completely speechless. We actually can’t believe Instagram is still allowing the photo, considering they seem to delete, ban or erase anything that shows any male nudity.

The Ex On The Beach star simply captioned the underwear shot with “What’s on your mind..?”

Clearly, his fan base had nothing but praise for the picture, but it was the outline of the star’s package in just a tiny pair of Calvin Klein underwear.

The post, garnered, naturally a lot of attention with over 8,800 likes and hundreds of comments – many of which noted the considerable size of the heavily tattooed star’s package.

The reality TV star is not afraid of showing some skin and regularly uploads half-naked pictures of himself on social media.

Of course, the picture is a little NSFW, so if you wanna see it, click here

  • LGBT+ people are hiding their personalities at work

LGBT+ people are hiding their personalities at work

Over 70 percent of LGBT+ people are hiding their true personality at work in fear that they’ll be discriminated against.

    Free-Photos / Pixabay

New research shows that LGBT+ people are much more likely to “cover” their true identities in order to be accepted by their co-workers and bosses. Covering is where a person conceals their true identity traits such as sexuality or gender expression, through the way they speak, act or dress.

According to a survey by totaljobs of 4,127 people across the country, the majority (52%) think people should change their personality for work. This is particularly the case for the LGBT+ community and it is evident from the moment that employees first meet their potential new employers. Indeed, two-thirds (64%) of LGBT+ people change their personality for interviews.

In fact, many LGBT+ employees continue to cover their true selves once they have passed probation, with a third (31%) of this community continuing to do so compared to a quarter (25%) of the overall population. This act of covering can even remain beyond traditional working hours, with 5 out of 10 (50%) LGBT+ people saying they keep their guard up at work-related events and company socials.

The research suggests that many UK workers could be doing more to create environments where LGBT+ workers feel they can be their true selves. While almost three-quarters (71%) of people agree that employees should stick up for LGBT+, women’s rights or disability groups, only half (49%) said they would actively do so in the workplace.

There is a clear correlation between the inclusivity of a company and the number of LGBT+ people who cover. Indeed, 7 out of 10 (70%) LGBT+ employees cover their true selves while working at non-inclusive companies.

    Fitting in

    (C) RAWPIXEL.COM / BIGSTOCK

Overall, there is a clear trend of gay, bisexual and transgender employees feeling they need to cover to meet the expectations of their work environment and their colleagues. A fifth (19%) of LGBT+ people cover because they want to fit into the company and their typical style wouldn’t allow that, compared to 1 in 7 (14%) of the overall population.

Meanwhile, 1 in 6 (16%) cover because they don’t feel their typical style would make a good impression.

Martin Talbot, Group Marketing Director, at totaljobs, said: “There is an assumption that employees should be comfortable expressing their true selves at work. However, this research has identified this is not the case and that a startling amount of people go as far as changing their personality and appearance.

“It is important that companies encourage an environment where the LGBTQ+ community feels welcome. It is staggering that up to 70% of LGBTQ+ employees cover their true selves at work and it is unacceptable that they’re twice as likely as the rest of the population to be victims of discrimination. It is clear that employers need to do more to prioritise the well-being of their LGBTQ+ employees and the inclusivity of their organisations so they feel comfortable expressing their true selves.”

  • Here’s what Brazil’s new president has said about gay people

Brazil has a brand new president and it’s not good news for LGBT+ people.

Janine Moraes / Câmara dos Deputados / Wikipedia

Brazil’s new far-right president has threatened violence against gay people and that having them as neighbours lowers the land value.

Jair Bolosoanro has a chequered history when it comes to minority groups including gay people. Earlier this year Brazil’s public prosecutor charged Bolsonaro with inciting discrimination against gay people, indigenous people and black people after he said, “If I see two men kissing in the street, I will hit them.”

Rather a gay son would die

Speaking on the thought that one of his sons could be gay the anti-gay politician told Playboy in 2011, “I would not be able to love a gay son. I would rather he die in an accident”. He also said that if a gay couple were to become his neighbours he believed it would lower the market value of his home.

In July 2011 in an interview with  Época, Bolsonaro said that he would “fight to prevent the distribution of the ‘gay kit’ [a set of guidelines proposed by UNESCO to promote the rights of the LGBT community in primary schools] because “their intention is to promote homosexuality, which is an affront to the family structure, and if that makes me prejudiced, then I’m prejudiced and very proud of it.”

Oh and he believes that homosexuality has increased because “due to liberal habits, drugs” and women in the workplace.

    Brazil and LGBT+ People

Brazil has a terrible reputation for violence against LGBT+ people. In January it was reported that an LGBT+ person is killed in Brazil every 19 hours. and in September 2017, it was ruled that homosexuality is a disease, by allowing so-called “gay cure” therapy to continue.

Judge Waldemar Claudio de Carvalho ruled that homosexuality can be treated as a disease and that conversion therapy as a means of curing it, is legal. The ruling has caused widespread condemnation and concern amongst LGBT+ people and their allies.

Despite this, Brazil is home to one of the world’s biggest pride events.
