THEATRE REVIEW | Rip It Up, Garrick Theatre, London

    ★★★ | Rip it Up

The 60s are back in the West End, and add a lot of dancing, throw in a few handsome pop stars, and what you have is an evening of very very light theatre.

Rip it Up, now playing at the Garrick Theatre, throws into the mix the best songs from the 60’s with beautiful choreography (by Gareth Walker, who is also the Director), and starring four former Strictly Come Dancing Contestants, and heartthrobs.

Louis Smith MBE (former Olympic gymnast and all around hunk), Aston Merrygold (former member of the X-Factor group JLS), Harry Judd (drummer in the worldwide famous pop group McFly), and last but not least Jan McGuiness (from The Wanted). These men, along with a bevy of young and sexy backup dancers, give it their all with fancy dance moves and upbeat music. But the best part of the show is the amazing singing by Jill Marie Cooper and Ant Brant. Cooper wins the audience over in her renditions of songs from Dionne Warwick to Jefferson Airplane, which lifts this show up a couple notches for without them this would’ve been just another jukebox musical without the jukebox.

All of the four male leads are fine, but they are not allowed to individually shine that much. Merrygold only gets to sing a couple songs, while we are treated to an all too short gymnastics routine by Smith (though luckily for he spends most of the time in the show either topless or wearing tight clothes). He is also a very graceful dancer. Judd is allowed a one minute drum solo (the audience wanted more), while McGuiness really doesn’t seem to offer much, though he tries his darndest to keep up with the dance moves.

Emcee Cavin Cornwall does a fine job guiding the audience through the different musical sounds of the 60s, though he wobbles horribly through ‘Heard if Through the Grapevine‘. Videos of Lulu, Tony Blackburn, designer Zandra Rhodes and the indelible Dionne Warwick tell us what is was really like in the 60s – show us don’t tell us! And Lulu actually comes on a few too many times.

But ultimately Rip it Up will only appeal to fans of the X-Factor and Strictly Come Dancing (of which all four stars have danced in). I can see this show selling out on the UK tour, but for a West End stage, it doesn’t quite feel right.

Rip it Up plays at The Garrick Theatre until June 2, 2019

  • Drag Race UK announces TWO new judges

Drag Race UK announces TWO new judges

RuPaul and Michelle Visage will be joined by two stalwarts of British TV.

Alan Carr and Graham Norton will be joining Michelle Visage and RuPaul for the first ever Drag Race UK as judges when it airs later this year. BBC Three confirmed the news today, while Michelle Visage was confirmed earlier this month.

Alan Carr is no stranger to drag having dressed up as various female stars for Heat magazine particularly when he dragged up as Madonna to recreate her infamous “cape” moment at the MTV Awards.

BBC Three has confirmed two of TV’s best loved presenters and personalities, Graham Norton and Alan Carr, will be joining RuPaul and Michelle Visage on the judging panel for RuPaul’s Drag Race UK.

Eight-time Bafta TV award-winner Graham Norton is no stranger to RuPaul’s Drag Race, having already appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars season two in the US as a guest judge in 2016. Whilst comedian Alan Carr is a long-time fan of RuPaul, having made his acquaintance when Ru appeared on his chat show Alan Carr’s Chatty Man.

Both Graham and Alan share a passion for the drag scene and RuPaul’s Drag Race.

The first UK adaption of the global hit will showcase the most fabulous drag queens that the UK has to offer, and Graham and Alan will appear as rotating resident judges. Each week, they will join RuPaul, Michelle Visage and a celebrity guest judge.

For the grand finale, Graham and Alan will both appear on the judging panel alongside previously announced judge Michelle Visage, where together they will assist host RuPaul in crowning the UK’s Next Drag Superstar.

Graham Norton says: “Becoming part of the drag race family makes me ridiculously happy! I can’t wait to see what the UK drag queens bring to the party, but they better weeeeerk!!!”

Alan Carr, says: “Wow! To be sat next to Michelle Visage and Mama Ru as a guest judge on possibly one of my all-time favourite shows EVER is a dream come true. I can’t wait to see what the UK Queens have got in store – it’s going to be sickening! does death drop

RuPaul, says: “I was both shocked and delighted when Graham and Alan told me they’d be wearing tucking panties when sitting at the judges’ table. I told them it was not necessary, but they insisted. Now that’s what I call dedication!”

Kate Phillips, Controller, Entertainment Commissioning, says: “I am so excited that self-confessed Drag Race fans Graham and Alan have agreed to join Ru and Michelle on our judging panel. Their immense wit and wisdom will be invaluable in ensuring the most deserving Queen sashays away with the title.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is an 8×60′ World of Wonder production for BBC Three. It was commissioned by Damian Kavanagh, Former Controller BBC Three and Kate Phillips, Controller, Entertainment Commissioning at the BBC. • Serial killer Stephen Port to immortalized in a TV drama

Serial killer Stephen Port to immortalized in a TV drama

Apparently, the BBC is planning a TV show about the brutal murders by convicted serial killer Stephen Port.

    Stephen Port

Filming for a documentary drama, called The Barking Murders surrounding the killer Stephen Port, who brutally raped and murdered four men between June 2014 and September 2015 is due to begin in the spring. Dubbed in the press as the Grindr Killer, Port used dating apps and websites to lure his victims. In 2016 the 41-year-old was also found guilty of 10 offences of administering a substance with intent, four rapes and four sexual assaults.

According to the BBC, the award-winning team behind The Moorside and Appropriate Adult, the new factual drama will go beneath the headlines to shed new light on this story by telling it from the point of view of the families of Stephen Port’s victims, focusing on their fight to uncover the truth about what had happened to their lost sons and brothers in the face of a now widely-criticised police investigation.

Port was found guilty of the murders of Anthony Patrick Walgate, 23, Gabriel Kovari, 22, Daniel Whitworth, 21 and Jack Taylor, 25. Their bodies were dumped in or near a graveyard in Barking. The graveyard was 500 meters away from his flat in east London.

The new film has Stephen Merchant in the role of Port.

    “This story can’t be ignored”

On joining the cast, Stephen Merchant said, “This is a story that can’t be ignored – how four young lives were lost and their families’ brave attempt to uncover what happened. This factual drama will shed light on their story, so it’s a privilege to be a part of telling it with the brilliant combination of Jeff Pope, Neil McKay and the BBC.”

He’ll be joined by Sheridan Smith who added, “‘I love playing real-life characters – especially an inspirational woman like Sarah Sak (the mother of Anthony Walgate) – but with it comes responsibility. Along with the other families, Sarah went through so much heartache and it would have been easy for her to just accept what she was being told by the police, but something inside made her keep fighting for her son.”

Disney busts down the closet door with character coming out openly as gay

Disney has always been a little bit, gay, but now one character is proudly out and has actually said it.

Times are changing at Disney as a character formerly comes out and announces “I’m gay!” No more closeted nods to the LGBT+ community, nope we have a fully fledged gayer in Disneyverse.

Now, the likelihood of you knowing the character in question is pretty unlikely unless you spend time watching the Disney channel show, Andi Mack, but the character Cyrus Goodman became the very first Disney character to utter the words, I’m Gay.

    Embed from Getty Images

The character is played by Joshua Rush who is 16, although his character is just 13 in the series.

In the episode, Cyrus finds the courage to come out to his friend Jonah while describing the food at a wake for his grandmother. He utters the words:

“That’s gefilte fish—skip that,” he warns before blurting out, “and I’m gay.”

After a slight pause, Jonah replies “Yeah? Okay, cool.”

    Watch it here

Taking to Twitter, Joshua said that working on the show was a blessing before adding that it was a “milestone” for the character.

  • FILM REVIEW | Boy Erased

    FILM REVIEW | Boy Erased

    ★★★★ | Boy Erased

In 2004, at the age of 19, American Garrard Conley was sent by his parents to a conversion therapy program to rid him of his homosexual feelings. This true story is now a film called Boy Erased.

The amazing Lucas Hedges (Lady Bird, Manchester by the Sea) plays Garrard. He is a young man growing up in a small bible belt community in Arkansas. His father Marshall (Russell Crowe) is a respected pastor in the local church while his mother Nancy (Nicole Kidman) believes in everything her husband says. But Garrard is given a choice by his parents when he tells them he is gay: either agree to attend the church-support conversion therapy program where he will have to go to a camp with similar young adults or risk losing his family, a family that he is quite close to. Garrard has no choice but to go through therapy. Garrard is happy being gay – even entering into a relationship with a fellow student at college – but it is his religious upbringing (and a stern father) which helps him make the decision to go to therapy.

Once he is at the Love in Action gay conversion therapy assessment program, he meets fellow young men like himself (including director and actor Xavier Dolan, and Joe Alwyn – at the time of this writing Taylor Swift’s boyfriend). They all struggle to not come to terms with the way they are, meanwhile all the time guided by the chief therapist Victor Sykes (writer and director of the film Joel Edgerton). But of course, Garrard has urges that he can’t control, while his parents feel that for him to lead a happy life is to lead the life of a straight man.

The real Garrard Conley, of course, luckily survived his time in the therapy program to write the book which is now this film, and it’s a very good film. Hedges, as always, is fantastic. One never knows what he’s thinking because of his inquisitive facial expressions, and he steals the movie from the two heavyweight actors who are playing his parents. Crowe is excellent as the self-righteous father but Kidman is both warm and tender as the mother who loves her husband but perhaps loves her son a bit more. Boy Erased is at times heartbreaking, but for the most part, it’s triumphant.

Boy Erased is out now and available to order from Amazon

  • Rose McGowan’s Brave: A Brave Rose between the Thorns

Rose McGowan’s Brave: A Brave Rose between the Thorns

So…A little while ago I was surprised to be contacted on Twitter by Rose McGowan after responding to one of her tweets. We had a back and forth over Direct Message touching on her experiences and the experiences of others and she recommended reading her book Brave, and this is what the article is mostly going to be about.

Obviously, I was aware of who Miss McGowan was, having been a huge fan of the TV series Charmed. And with her more recent revelations of her experiences of Hollywood, and her contribution to the #MeToo movement and her own consciousness-raising movement, #RoseArmy, her presence was very much at the forefront of a much bigger story.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Br0vSvFBrPM/

Out of respect for her, I will not mention the name of who she has accused, or go into details again about what allegedly happened to her. Those things are detailed in the book, though even she refuses to name him, but for anyone who knows the story and has Google, you’ll know who it is.

I don’t see a broken or damaged woman. I see a hurt woman, yes. But I also see a strong woman who fights for what she believes is right

So I went into Brave with not really knowing what to expect. The mainstream media had painted a rather bleak picture of her as this loud troublemaker who couldn’t control herself. Even smaller websites would chime in, with one even branding her a whore in the past. Would this book be a self-serving pity fest? A vague collection of anecdotes from a woman desperately trying to promote herself? Far, far, far from it.

Brave details pretty much everything about Rose McGowan, from her troubled childhood growing up in a cult, her relationships with her family and partners, her experiences of Hollywood, why she decided to shave her head and through to her current fight to be heard by the very media that is so keen to destroy and discredit her.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BkaaVqzA90U/

Reading every chapter of her book, gave me an insight into why she acts the way she does now, why she’s so passionate about calling out unacceptable behaviour towards people, and why she’s so angry.

I don’t see a broken or damaged woman. I see a hurt woman, yes. But I also see a strong woman who fights for what she believes is right.

For anyone who has ever been the victim of harassment or assault, this book could potentially be triggering, but to see how far she’s come and how she wants to inspire and challenge your way of thinking is utterly phenomenal. There are times that the book will be hard reading, but I would recommend that if there are some chapters that affect you, then take a break. There’s no rush to read it through in one go. I will say though that it’s a book that will certainly get you thinking.

To be one of the first women in Hollywood to finally speak out and have her voice heard took a tremendous amount of bravery. She threw herself out there, running the risk of being ridiculed and dismissed. For years the talk of the “casting couch” had always come hand in hand with Hollywood. But for the first time the #MeToo movement pointed out that it was far seedier than anyone would’ve thought. A terrible dynamic of higher-ups allegedly using their power and influence over someone’s career to get away with some truly shocking behaviour.

Brave details the alleged casual misogyny that exists within the film and TV industry, and that’s just towards one woman.

I don’t want to go over every aspect of Brave, there’s a LOT in there, nothing is held back, so there will be a fair few surprises about what some aspects of Hollywood are like.

Rose’s public appearances are usually fraught with controversy, from a shouting match with a transgender activist at a book signing (instigated by the activist), to unsettling questions being asked in interviews, usually looking for a juicy soundbite to take out of context. Brave gives Rose an opportunity to actually get her point across without a time limit. I didn’t want to just be another voice in the sea of pieces about her. Her voice deserves to be heard. So I implore you to read Brave, and to actually listen to this woman, who described herself to me as a freedom fighter.

Rose continues to be a dividing voice, but she’s acutely aware of that. She takes no pleasure in lifting the veil on systemic abuse in the industry at the risk of her own career.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BhtmALnlIqo/

And now this year she brings her book tour and talks to the UK & Ireland for several dates around the country. I’ve already got my ticket, and while Brave is a brutally honest, and almost visceral read, hearing the stories from Rose’s own mouth will add that extra dimension to the book.

Tickets for the four-date UK & Ireland tour can be purchased online here. Rose McGowan’s book Brave can be bought here.

The Greatest Dancer is the BBC’s flagship dance reality TV show for January / Feb 2019, but how many episodes are there?

How many episodes are there of The Greatest Dancer?

The Greatest Dancer on BBC One has just eight episodes to it, which makes it a baby in terms of episode numbers compared to some of the other reality juggernauts, like the X Factor or I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here.

It is presented by Alesha Dixon and Jordan Banjo and the dancers are judged by former Glee star, Matthew Morrison, former Girls Aloud singer, Cheryl (formerly Cole) and professional dancer and choreographer Oti Mabuse. It has not been the ratings smash that the BBC were perhaps hoping for, managing to gain a series average of around 3.3 million viewers which is roughly the same as Casualty, the Beeb’s medical drama soap.

Will there be another series of The Greatest Dancer?

The BBC has not yet announced whether it will commission another series of the Simon Cowell created show. The show is the first show ever created by Simon for the BBC as he normally works with ITV.

However, it is worth noting that the BBC always has a big reality format show in the January / February weekend evening slot. Before The Greatest Dancer, it was the broadcaster of The Voice before it jumped channels and landed on ITV.

What does the winner get on The Greatest Dancer?

The eventual winner will win £50,000 and a chance to perform on the next series of Strictly Come Dancing.

  • FILM REVIEW | Can You Ever Forgive Me?

FILM REVIEW | Can You Ever Forgive Me?

★★★★ | Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant both play gay characters in the fantastic Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Based on the life of book author, and Lesbian, Lee Israel, and fluidly directed by Marielle Heller, Can You Ever Forgive Me? based on the late Israel’s memoir, tells about the misadventures of Israel’s life. She was a Manhattanite who didn’t have much money to rub together, so she starts forging signatures of famous people and then sells them to collectors, raking in big money.

Questions start arising about her charade, and soon enough she has to pull back, and then enlists her gay best friend Jack (Richard E. Grant – in his best performance ever) to take over her sales duties to pawn more fakes to the collectors. It’s early 1990’s New York City, and one gets the feeling that anything can happen then (‘if you can make it there you can make it anywhere’), and that Israel will rise above it all, but in the end, we know what is coming. But before, director Heller (working from a screenplay by Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty) perfectly sets the mood and vibe of New York, with bookshops almost at every corner (long gone now no thanks to the internet) and quite a few of the scenes in the film were shot in the West Village’s classic gay bar Julius.

Can We Ever Forgive Israel? Yes, we can definitely forgive Israel for what she’s done because it has brought us this fine movie. McCarthy and Grant have been nominated for Oscars, let’s hope that if anyone of them wins, it will be Grant. He is just superb in his role, debonair, chilled, and like a fine wine, getting better with age.
