STYLE ADVICE | What are the best brow products for ginger guys?

If you’re a blonde or ginger guys you’ve probably got questions about the right products for you, as well as what products will protect your skin. Worry no more, our style and grooming expert Thomas Swallow is on hand to help.

What are the best brow products for gingers?

Being a blond guy, I can totally relate to this problem. Unless you have brown/black hair, most brown products tend to be on the golden or warm side of the colour spectrum. So it’s so much harder to colour match a product to your brows if your hair is of a lighter hue.

Ideally here you’re wanting to define your brows but not make them mismatched to the rest of your hair. For most gingers/redheads, I would recommend opting for an auburn shade. This isn’t going to be a perfect match every time but it will get you on the right track. So depending on your natural brows being either blondish, reddish or brown, you can see which product works best for you.

    My Recommendation:

I would always opt for an eyebrow pencil or mascara/gel when filling in my brows. This will create the most natural effect possible, adding that bit of definition but not making it glaringly obvious, that they aren’t your natural brows.

Alternatively, I would recommend eyebrow tinting. I recently went to get my brows and eyelashes tinted at Blink Brow Bar in London. By getting them tinted, you can add the definition you want and have the shade matched perfectly to your hair colour. If you’re interested in learning more about this, check out my article here.

  • Over 80 per cent of LGBT+ people don’t feel they can hold their partner’s hand in public

It appears that the vast majority of LGBT+ people in the UK feel uncomfortable holding the hands of their same-sex partner in the UK.

THEGAYUK.com conducted a flash poll on social media, asking 200 people from the LGBT+ community whether they felt they could hold the hand of their same-sex partner, where opposite-sex partners could and would hold theirs – and the results are staggering.

Over 80 per cent (85%) of those who answered the poll said that they didn’t feel they could hold their same-sex partner’s hand in public in the UK. Only 15 per cent of those who answered said they would feel comfortable.

Speaking about the findings, editor of THEGAYUK.com, Jake Hook said,  “What this poll shows is very troubling. Despite LGBT+ people having almost equal legal rights in the UK, our community still don’t feel that we’re societally equal.

“Gay and bisexual men and women should be able to walk down any street in the UK, where their straight counterparts hold hands and feel that they can do the same without ridicule, attack or comment”.

Seemingly the LGBT+ community is getting more wary of showing public displays of affection on the streets of the UK. In 2018 only 41% said they wouldn’t feel they could hold hands with their partner and in 2016 that figure was 23%.

THEGAYUK.com asked a similar question in October 2018 we asked whether LGBT+ people were comfortable holding hands, 41 per cent said no – 22 per cent were unsure and 37 per cent said they were comfortable holding hands.

In December 2016 – where we asked 166 people if they felt they could hold their partner’s hand in a supermarket. Only 30 percent of people said that felt they wouldn’t be able to, where as 23 per cent admited that they already did hold their partner’s hand in public.

Lord Cashman officially opens the UK’s Pride Media Centre

A CELEBRATED LGBT+ campaigner has officially opened an innovative venture, which is set to transform lives and boost job prospects in the North East.

The Pride Media Centre, at Stonehills, Pelaw, is the UK’s first LGBT+ business and media hub.

And, the complex, which is designed to support LGBT+ entrepreneurs through training, facilities and advice, was officially opened by Lord Michael Cashman CBE on Friday (31 May).

A variety of businesses and organisations have made a home in the centre, including the not for profit organisation, Pride Community Network and multi-channel broadcaster Pride World Media, which includes Pride Radio 89.2fm and Pride World Radio, which broadcasts online to around 125 countries.

One of the founders of national charity, Stonewall, and a former actor, Lord Cashman made history with the first gay male kiss on mainstream British television when he appeared as Colin in EastEnders.

He has since become a leading campaigner and equality activist and in his speech to the 100 strong audience, he said: “When we set up Stonewall 30 years ago, I never thought we’d achieve equality in my lifetime and I certainly never thought I would be here in Gateshead opening the Pride Media Centre.

“What we have got here is people who have got the guts to stand up not only for themselves but for others.”

The hub has been supported by Gateshead Council and Lord Cashman said: “I know it is ideas that change the world and I congratulate Gateshead Council for the idea and the support, which sends the signal that it’s not all about the bigger cities, it is about innovation and courage to put yourself at the front.”

The hub is also the home of newly launched online television station, Out and Proud TV, and it will provide a range of support and opportunities to the LGBT+ community and their allies, including outreach programmes designed to reach isolated members of the LGBT+ community.

“I am very proud that Gateshead has the first LGBT+ business and media centre in the UK and this is the place where we will start something big that will have repercussions all over the UK,” said Peter Darrant, CEO of Pride World Media.

“In this strange world we live in, where we think we have all the rights, it is still very important to fly the LGBT+ flag outside.

“There is an urgency to have something like this building and we have been waiting 50 years for it, so while we officially open the centre for the first time today, this is just the beginning.”

The longest six months of my life, but mostly because of how much we’ve crammed into them. @lukeyluke8, thanks for being the Ricky Ricardo to my Lucy.”

  • COMMENT | Will we ever be able to live without plastic?

COMMENT | Will we ever be able to live without plastic?

Plastic. The savour of our modern times. A material that will keep produce clean and safe. A substance that can be made into all sorts of shapes for safe storage of items around the home and garden, garage and office.

Plastic is everywhere. It’s a very useable material. It’s also incredibly long lived and is thrown away by the ton every minute of the day.

Have you tried to go plastic free? I’ll be honest, I haven’t. Until suppliers stop using it, I can’t stop using it. That said, I do recycle what l can. I even wash it before I pop it in the bin. Sounds like common-sense but you’ll be surprised by how many people don’t!

Home owners are being targeted by their use but so too are car manufacturers. They are seen as some of the worlds worst polluters. Trouble is, they are not. Attend any car launch, read any motoring journal and they all talk about “sustainability” and use of recycled plastics.

Volvo are pioneering this movement the hardest at the moment. They are going for and trying to use more and more recycled plastics in their manufacture.

Twenty years ago, being seen as green and environmental loving was loved by all but then it sort of slipped out of favour.

And vehicle manufactures have been quick to develop new working ways. VW also had a go back when the Mk3 Golf was new. 60 parts were made with recycling in mind when the car came to the end of its life. Some of it was black plastic. Ironic then that your black pots from the garden centre can’t be recycled but that’s for another day.

So you can’t really blame the manufacturer of cars for the terrible use and waste in motor manufacturing. A setting where plastic waste is rife is within the healthcare settings. It is astonishing just how much gets thrown away.

While there is a need for plastic in the sterile settings, some of it isn’t needed. Catheter care and associated parts NEED to be sterile but not all the parts for enteral feeding, for example do.

In setting up a feed, there are eight plastic parts. All of these get thrown away. They are all rather small and one to one, quite insignificant. Now times that by 1000 enteral feed users and it soon mounts up. But there are more users out there than 1000. So you can see the problem. And then there are the several plastic syringes that are used by each patient.

And then it gets worse when it comes to pill popping. Many healthcare settings have large A4 sized blister packs. Each pack contains 28 pockets and often hold just 1 pill. Now, take a hospital ward of 26 beds and the average of each patient being on 3 meds 4 times a day. That’s 312 A4 packets of clear plastic thrown away each month. Now times that per the hospital average of 10 wards and it adds up to tons of wastage.

Sadly hospitals and other healthcare settings neither have the staff, time or funding to develop a policy for recycling. It’s not a simple case of throwing it into a big recycling bin. All patient identifying date has to be removed first for confidentiality.

Imagine removing 312 stickers! It’s no fun. And then there are the blister packs that you have at home, backed by foil.

So before you go ripping into the manufacturer of the motor vehicle as the killer of the planet, think about what you are doing as you pop out that paracetamol from that non-recyclable plastic and foil blister pack.
