  • Simon Gross First Ever Male Housemate To Be Evicted First From Big Brother

    Surprise Eviction: Simon was evicted from the Big Brother House, becoming the first ever male to be evicted first from Big Brother.

    Last night during the Big Brother: Timebomb Live Launch, Emma Willis surprised the Housemates with the first live eviction.

    Viewers were given the opportunity to vote via a free poll on the Big Brother app. They voted to select five Housemates to take part in the first Timebomb Twist. The five Housemates were Adjoa, Jack, Jade, Nick and Simon and they took part in a game which had huge consequences for one Housemate and rewards for others.

    Adjoa, Jack, Jade, Nick and Simon had to stand in front of five Timebomb podiums which had the Housemates fate inside. Jack got immunity and he will receive 3 immunity passes throughout the series. Nick got nominations, and he will have to nominate face to face throughout his time in the house. Jade got luxury and she will receive a luxury shopping budget, exclusively for her to use at some point during her time in the House. Adjoa received nothing, and Simon received an eviction.

    Simon became the first person to leave the Big Brother House. He told his fellow Housemates upon leaving “Have a great time all of you…it’s been fantastic…showbiz”.

    Simon left the House to boos. When speaking to Emma he said: “For my five minutes of fame it was fantastic, I’ve got a career to go back to…its showbiz. I’ve had so many rejections in my career it’s just one of many, its showbiz…I would have been fabulous buy that’s the way it goes. I think they will have a really fantastic summer”.

    Join Emma on Friday night at 9pm for a special live episode where a second time bomb will drop on the Housemates. Very soon, viewers will be able to vote via the Big Brother app and Big Brother wants to know who should be the winner of Big Brother: Timebomb. During this second free poll which will close during Friday’s live show, the Housemate with the most votes won’t actually be crowned the winner on Friday. They will discover they’re the most popular Housemate and that popularity comes with a price. The Housemate will need to make a devastating decision that will affect the entire house…

    Sir Elton Pleads With US Congress To Bring An End To AIDS

     

    In an impassioned plea to the US Congress when he was recently giving testimony to a Senate Appropriations Sub-Committee on global health, Sir Elton John said, “This is the most powerful legislative body in the world. This Congress indeed has the power to end AIDS. I am asking you to use that power, to seize this window of opportunity, to change the course of history,” He added “There is a window of opportunity before us — a window through which we can very clearly see the end of AIDS — within my lifetime. We cannot afford to let that window close”.

    Accompanied by his husband David Furnish, Sir Elton explained that his own Foundation that has to date raised over £231 million to help both people inflicted with the disease and research organisations committed to finding a cure. He gave credit to the Senate for their work to date. “Because the American people have the optimism, the ingenuity and the will to make a difference, the lives of millions of people halfway around the world have been saved,” he told the subcommittee: “But I’m here with a simple message: the AIDS epidemic is not over, and America’s continued leadership is critical.”

  • Louis Walsh Axed From X FACTOR?

    Has the Irish judge Louis Walsh has been given the shove as Simon Cowell’s desperate revamp to keep viewers tuning in to X FACTOR continues?

    Louis has been a fixture on the X FACTOR for eleven years, now in an attempt to shake up the format, Simon Cowell has seemingly axed him according to the Sun On Sunday.

    First it was Dermot now Louis. But is Simon Cowell really dumping the right people? Last year we revealed that the majority of viewers thought that Cheryl should be the one to be dropped from the show which has been suffering a decline in audience since its hey day in 2010. Nearly 60% of Heat magazine readers thought that the Geordie pop singer should be let go from the show.

    Louis is quoted as saying that he now wants to concentrate on being a music manager again, saying:

    “I want to go back to being a manager – that’s my day job and I’ve neglected it for a long time because I’m away so much.

    “At the moment, I’m working with Shane Filan – he’s got a new record coming out, and I’m also working with Hometown.

    “I’d like to get back to where I started off… I never even wanted to be on TV, it just happened.”

  • COMMENT | I Lost My Job Today

    Today I lost my day job.

    If I’m honest, it was not a huge shocker. I had worked there since last year and it had been a bit of a change in career direction but the last couple of months I’d felt a lot like I was drowning with no rubber ring at hand. Still when one of management asked if i’d ‘’got a minute’’ and invited me into another room it felt inevitable and also a gut punch.

    That was a few hours ago. Since then there have been a few tears, most of them when I walked through my front door to be met by my partner with a hug and an ‘’it’s all okay, babe’’.

    His utter, unconditional support and downright bloody loveliness about a situation that screws up our immediate plans was the killer. I wouldn’t blame him at all for being livid with me. And I’d love to say I would be exactly that sweet and caring right now. I’d love to but… I’m not sure.

    And then, as is the gay way, after a lot more tears (Mine) and even more words of support (His), he took me to the corner shop and bought junk food and a very big bottle of vodka. It’s unopened in the fridge right now. But let’s be honest; that will not remain the case for very long.

    My poor, darling man… He blames himself. We got together at Christmas and then moved in together and got engaged roughly five minutes later. More tsunami than whirlwind romance. So yes, maybe I have been less than focussed at work due to the sheer size of life changes in such a short time. But I’m an adult, I make my own choices. And one of them is the amount of work I actually do at work. Like I say, the abrupt interruption in what I will charitably call a career was not exactly a bombshell out of nowhere.

    I saw the storm clouds rolling in but still went out without an umbrella.

    So sat on my sofa on the afternoon I have become, hopefully, temporarily unemployed I admit I am terrified. This is even before the paranoia at the bottom of the corner shop vodka has kicked in. I read the newspapers on he weekend about how the new Tory government and the welfare cuts to come will make life tougher for many. Potentially that includes me.

    I’m a middle aged poof, with a patchy career history. My age and a CV that is less than dazzling makes this start of a new chapter seem like one case of Picking Myself and Dusting Myself Down too many.

    It’s not that I’m proud or picky but getting to 5pm in a job that pays reasonably okay… Well, at this point winning the big one on the Lottery seems shorter odds.

    Anyway, enough self pity for now. Tomorrow is a new day and all that crap… And I have employment agencies to pester and try to spin this latest hiccup into something vaguely positive. That will be stretch.

    However for now, there is a bottle of vodka in the fridge and a supportive partner to share it with. It may seem bleak. It could be worse.

    With US Supreme Court ruling on same sex marriage just a month a way, the opposition is up to its usual dirty tricks with it’s latest highly offensive action.

    Faith 2 Action, Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, Judicial Action Group, American Family Association of Pennsylvania and Conservative Republicans of Texas are among groups behind a campaign making itself known on billboards that are now springing up around Michigan.

    These anti-gay billboards claim that homosexuality is a behaviour and not a civil right and advertise a website called ‘Restrain the Judges’ which urges people to send a ‘Restraining Order’ to every member of the Senate and the House along with each of the United States Supreme Court Justices.

  • THEATRE REVIEW | The Full Monty, UK Tour 2015

    ★★★★ | The Full Monty, UK Tour 2015

    In 1997, a film about unemployed steel workers turning into unlikely strippers became the most successful film in the UK (until it was overtaken by Titanic), garnered four Oscar nominations and cemented the phrase ‘the full monty’ into popular culture.

    Set in Sheffield, a group of ex-steelworkers with seemingly very little in common, other than their unemployment, band together in a get rich quick scheme, whereby they plan to rival The Chippendales by becoming strippers and giving the audience a little something extra – by going all the way. Gary, needs money as he is on the cusp of losing contact with his son, overweight Dave has a big body image problem, Horse has a rather (ahem) “small” problem and Loomper has his own secret hidden in his closet. But despite their unlikely sex symbol status, the whole community waits to see whether they really will go ahead with their scheme and whether they will go the full monty.

    Not to be confused with the musical version of The Full Monty, which was produced in 2000, this version is a straight play, which forgoes thin plot and thinner characterisations which simply link musical numbers, and instead provides a play with heart, rounded characters, a genuinely funny script (particularly in the second act) and, of course, the ending that the predominantly female audience were waiting for.

    Despite a few rather dubious Sheffield accents (you can’t fool the home crowd, you know), the cast worked well as an ensemble. Andrew Dunn (“Dinnerladies”) and Louis Emerick (“Brookside”) provided the better performances of the evening; both with effective yet understated performances, whilst Gary Lucy (“Eastenders”) provided the eye candy.

    The show is beautifully written by Simon Beaufoy, who wrote the original story and received an Oscar nomination for his screenplay for the film. The story of the play very closely mirrors that of the film itself, with all of the key plot points, pivotal scenes and music being extrapolated, but despite the running time of the play being approximately 40 minutes longer than the film; it never feels like it is padded out. What does come across much more in this production is the social commentary hidden beneath the comedy and narrative and there is a real balance between the humour, sadness and optimism portrayed. Despite the characters initial differences, there is a genuine feeling of friendship which permeates the play, accompanied by a strong sense of family, loyalty and acceptance.

    Overall, the show remains a feel-good, funny and enjoyable show, which I have to say I enjoyed much more on second viewing, and the whoops of delight by the time the curtain fell proved it was a real crowd pleaser.

  • Gay Kiss At Dodgers Stadium Makes History

    There is nothing that defines culture in our society more than sport.

    It is still the biggest reason why people are glued to the television in larger numbers than even the Eurovision Song Contest. It is also one of the last major bastions of homophobia in our society, so every single breakthrough we make is very significant. This week saw yet another heart-warming incident that indicates that maybe the tide is turning, albeit at a trickle at a time.

    Last Saturday at the Dodgers game versus the Arizona Diamondbacks, the infamous Kiss Cam was making its usual way around the stadium, putting couples up on the big screen so people could see them awkwardly smooch. The camera then landed on two men, which used to be a stupid joke before most professional sports organizations banned it, but this was no joke. This was just another couple, and the Dodgers wanted to include them in the corny fun.

    What happened next was extra special. When the couple kissed and smiled at the camera, the entire stadium cheered, because they knew they were witnessing something they would not have seen merely five years ago.

    One of the crowd Steve Hartline told The Gaily Grind:

    “I was at the Dodger/Diamondbacks game on Saturday evening at Dodger Stadium. Kiss Cam comes on, and after a few standard awkward couple moments, the camera focuses on two men. My natural instinct was this was for a gag/cheap laugh, but the two men turned to each other and kiss, indicating they are a real-life loving couple, not a punchline. I’m glad I was there, as it felt historic, and was proud of the loud, enthusiastic response from the crowd. Not one person around me groaned or made derogatory remarks, and seemed genuinely pleased with the moment.”

    The couple in the video, married couple of 20 years Steven and Rick Simone-Friedland, spoke about the big moment and what the heartwarming reaction meant to them.

    “All we did was kiss,” Steven said. “What made everyone’s day was the crowd reaction. I don’t think anybody was expecting that reaction. I kiss my husband every single day. That’s not the big deal. The big deal is what happened immediately after. That’s just the most amazing thing.”

    It was a very big change from the summer of 2000, when two women were thrown out of a Los Angeles Dodgers game for kissing. They were surrounded by eight security guards and escorted out because they exposing children to disgusting acts of horror, like love and engaging in public displays of affection that every straight couple engaged in that same evening.

  • ITALY: Two Men Get Engaged Live On Prime Time “Got Talent” Show

    Live on ‘Italia’s Got Talent’ TV show the members of Les Farfadais, a troupe of acrobatic dancers, had just performed a routine when one of the dancers then got down on one knee and proposed to his boyfriend said after he said “yes” the couple kissed on stage.

    The stunned judges and the studio audience went wild and cheered for the couple in what the show’s producers claim was totally unrehearsed and unexpected.

    Italy, of course, does not have marriage equality but has been making modest moves toward it in recent months.

    In February, Italy’s highest appeals court ruled that same-sex marriage is not a constitutional right but that gay couples are entitled to certain rights and protections.

    Rome’s Mayor married 16 gay couples last October in defiance of Italy’s laws. Rome has also created a register of civil unions for same-sex couples and Bologna came out in favour of recognising same-sex unions in September.

    P.S. The newly affianced men had incidentally been performing to ‘the power of love’.
