  • FILM REVIEW | Bruno & Earlene Go To Vegas

    ★★ | Bruno & Earlene Go To Vegas

    When the movie opens Earlene is sitting on a wall in Venice Beach swigging from a bottle secreted in a brown paper bag and she very dramatically utters to a total stranger, ‘Experience is the name we give our mistakes. Which one are you?’ and I cannot help but cringe.

    It sadly will not be the last time I feel like that, whilst watching this well-meaning micro-budget indie movie, that is all heart but ends up being an undisciplined convoluted mishmash of a film.

    Earlene like every other character in this story has her ‘issues’ although in her case the reason for her mood swings is not clear until near the end. Her new androgynous Australian friend Bruno, that she immediately latches on to at their first encounter is sexually confused, and so she adopts his well-being and happiness as her own crusade. Bruno has a dream of visiting Paris to see the Eiffel Tower, which is obviously out of the question as neither of them have any money, so his new friend Earlene promises to take him on a road trip to see the next best thing i.e. a full-size replica in Las Vegas.

    En route and a chance meeting with Billy, a good-looking cocky gay drifter takes them off course and they stumble upon a very small forgotten town in the middle of the Nevada desert. It’s inhabited by an odd bunch of misfits straight out of Central Casting that includes a Cher look-alike Sheriff, a tap-dancing drag queen, and a couple of Scottish male strippers. They are all kindred spirits who have found this remote bolt-hole where they can escape the outside world that none of them remotely fit in.

    This debut feature from British writer/director/producer Simon Savory bravely tackles issues of gender and sexual identity and friendship, and at times is close to succeeding. It’s valiant effort, however, is hampered by a heavy-handed script with a smattering of pompous sounding epithets which made the dialogue somewhat stilted. Ashleigh Simpson the lead actress could have taken her performance down a notch or too as she overplayed the part of Earlene to the point of being annoying.

    On the other hand, Savory’s choice to shoot this British production on location was very wise and really paid off with some excellent cinematography of the beautiful desert setting.

    P.S. It’s tough being a filmmaker with such a minute budget and the biggest disadvantage of assuming all the major functions yourself, as in this case is that you lack the benefit of another independent set of ears and eyes which may have spotted some of the issues, which stopped it being the movie it was obviously meant to be.

    Due for release on the 15th September.

    Pilot or stewardess? Man or woman? If you’re an aviation fan and you have a thing for airborne film characters, it will come as no surprise to you that one in two felt a certain weakness for Tom Cruise as a fighter pilot in Top Gun.

    The statistics are drawn from the Travel and Compensation Habits of English Passengers survey carried out by refund.me, the international provider that helps airline passengers claim their right to financial compensation for delays, cancellations, missed connections and diversions.

    Cruise isn’t alone on the wish-list of British passengers. Second place went to Leonardo DiCaprio, who received 32% of the votes thanks to his role in the Hollywood hit Catch Me If You Can, and third place to Denzel Washington for his performance as a pilot in Flight with 18% of the votes.

    When it comes to female cabin crew, the most desired actress after Catherine Zeta Jones was Kirsten Dunst, who received 39% of the votes, for her role in the romantic comedy Elisabethtown. She was followed in third place by Ellen Pompeo, who received 20% of the vote for her performance as Marci in Catch Me If You Can.

  • Google and YouTube To Be Honoured As LGBT Game Changers

    GLAAD have announced that they are to honour Google and YouTube at a Gala in San Francisco.

    Glaad, the US’s national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy organisation, today announced it will honour global technology leader Google and video-sharing innovator YouTube at the GLAAD Gala San Francisco.

    At the gala, Google and YouTube will receive the Ric Weiland Award, which honours innovators who advance LGBT equality through tech and new media. The award is named after Ric Weiland, who was a computer software pioneer and philanthropist. Together with his surviving partner Mike Schaefer, he is known for his dedication to LGBT and HIV/AIDS organisations.

    For years, Google has been one of Silicon Valley’s most vocal supporters of LGBT equality. In 2008, Google spoke out against California’s Proposition 8, a statewide ban on marriage for same-sex couples, and donated significant contributions to efforts to remove the ban.

    In 2010, Google announced that it would cover extra health coverage-related costs incurred by gay and lesbian couples unable to legally wed. The following year, Google expanded its employee healthcare coverage to include transition-related care for its transgender employees.

    In 2012, the company launched ‘Legalize Love,’ an international effort to “promote safer conditions for gay and lesbian people inside and outside the office in countries with anti-gay laws on the books.” That same year, Google unveiled a YouTube video showcasing employees speaking out in support of marriage equality in four battleground states – Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington. In 2013, YouTube unveiled its first-ever pride campaign, #ProudToLove, and changed its logo to be pride-themed for the first time in the company’s history.

    Earlier this year, Google showed its support for LGBT Russians through a rainbow ‘Google Doodle,’ which debuted just hours before the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. And in June, YouTube unveiled its #ProudToPlay campaign – a celebration of LGBT equality in sports. The campaign was featured on the YouTube and Google homepages and marked the second consecutive year that YouTube changed its logo for a pride campaign.

    ‘Few companies have the power to reach billions, and even fewer use that power to help ensure everyone can live the life they love,’ said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. ‘Tech innovators like Google are now at the forefront of the global conversation on LGBT equality, ushering in a new era of acceptance and understanding for users across the world.     GLAAD also announced that Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, lead plaintiffs in Hollingsworth v. Perry, the landmark case that struck down California’s Proposition 8, will receive the Presidential Local Hero Award at the event.

    ‘Kris and Sandy’s courage and leadership have now touched the lives of countless loving and committed couples across California and beyond its borders, drawing us closer than ever before to full marriage equality in the United States,’ said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis.

  • Appeal For Information After Homophobic Attack On London Train

    A man was assaulted and verbally abused on a train between Charing Cross and Bexleyheath in July.

    British Transport Police (BTP) officers are appealing for information after a man suffered homophobic abuse and was assaulted on Tuesday, 15 July on a train between Charing Cross and Bexleyheath.

    PC Michael Willoughby is investigating. He said: ‘The victim boarded the train at Charing Cross around 5.30am. During the journey a man sat opposite him and began making homophobic comments to him and began taking pictures of the victim on his phone.

    ‘The victim challenged the man, but was punched and kicked in return’

    The suspect is described as a Chinese man, aged around 35, wearing a casual dark grey shirt, black trousers and black shoes. He is thought to be of proportional build and around 5’9.

    Officers are appealing to anyone who was on the service at the time and who may have information about what took place.

    PC Willoughby continued: ‘Anti-social or violent behaviour has no place on the railway and passengers should feel able to use the network without fear of becoming a victim of crime.

    ‘Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any information about what took place, should get in touch.’

  • FILM REVIEW | Pride

    ★★★★★ | Pride

    A film that includes Wales, miners, politics, gays and an ’80’s soundtrack, ticks all my boxes! Pride is one of those films that will do well, a mix of topics, a “people” film, part tear-jerker, part bio-pic (based on true events, with real characters), part comedy, think Billie Elliot, Kinky Boots or Calendar Girls.

    The story is simple, set in 1984 in the midst of the Miner’s strike, the Unions versus Thatcher’s government and its hard stance, and a politicised London gay boy suddenly gets the idea to raise funds for the miners, having heard how they are being intimidated back to work.

    He forms the Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners Group (LGSM) and starts fund-raising for them. However, after their first round of bucket rattling, it becomes apparent that the Unions aren’t keen on taking their money. So they go direct, and find a South Wales mining community who will take their cash and donations. And this is the start of the bonding of two disparate communities.

    The majority of the film deals with how the two communities grow to know each other, how the London group gets to grips with a small community and its prejudices (or in some cases, lack of them) and the Welsh group and their education in to the world of “the gays”!

    The film provides so much repeatable fodder, I guarantee that you will be quoting this film next month! My favourite is still Imelda’s line from the preview: ‘We’re off to Swansea now for a missive lez off!’

    My recommendation, go see it, go get your cockles warmed, sing-along-a-bronski-beat and watch some of the smoothest disco moves on the silver screen courtesy of the amazing Dominic West!

    The cast is incredible, including the lovely Andrew Scott (Moriarty from Sherlock) gives a hell of a performance as part of the “older” gay couple paired with Dominic West as his partner, Imelda Staunton as the kind of Welsh matriarch I know and love, Bill Nighy gives one of his best subtlest performances, but it’s the ones I’m not that familiar with that really set the stage for this film. George MacKay is amazing as a then underage closeted young man on a journey, Joseph Gilgun gives a great performance as one half of a platonic political couple with Ben Schnetzer who plays Mark, the driving force and sometimes eloquent spokesperson behind the LGSM. Watch out for a cameo from the lovely Russell Tovey too.

    Matthew Warchus and Stephen Beresford have given us a true slice of early ’80’s nostalgia, wrapped up in a slice of political and social history and some of the most comic scenes you’ll ever see.

    I’d give this film 6 stars out of 5 is I could, but I’ll make do with 5 for now!
