  • Are there Lesbian Bars in London?

London has the highest number of LGBT+ bars, clubs and venues in the UK. So does it have any lesbian bars and clubs where are they?

Are there Lesbian Bars in London?

London’s LGBT+ scene is the largest in the UK and it does include at least one lesbian venue. The most famous and central is the She Soho in Soho on Old Compton Street (number 23a to be precise).  She Soho is mainly focussed at the LBQ women community and says it is the only “women-priority venue” in London, although men are welcome to enter with female guests. The venue has the hottest DJs on the scene, alongside regular drag king cabaret, burlesque and social events.

Probably the most famous bar before She Soho was Candy based in Carlisle Street in Soho, which closed permanently in 2014 due to rent increase demands. It was subject of a 4 part documentary on Channel 5 called Candy Bar Girls. There was also an event called Lounge which also closed despite attempts to bring back the evening in 2014.

Of course, London has many LGBT+ spaces you can find our full listings of LGBT+ and gay-friendly bars and pubs here

  • Is Piers Morgan gay?

Piers Morgan is one of the hosts of the daily morning show, Good Morning Britain and famous for his direct and frank questioning… but there’s one question that people are asking, is Piers Morgan gay?

    Is Piers Morgan gay?

Piers Morgan, 52, has a frank manner about him and his line of questioning is often seen as frank and intrusive, which is,  no doubt down to his long-term experience working at some of the world’s most prominent and powerful news outlets including, the Daily Mirror, the Sun and CNN.

In 1991 Pier Morgan married a woman called Marion Shalloe and together they have three sons. However, the couple divorced in 2008 and he remarried his second wife, Celia Walden – a newspaper features writer and columnist. So, it appears that Piers Morgan does not identify as gay.

However, Mr Morgan has been, at times, a strong vocal advocate for the gay community and was very critical of Tim Farron during the 2017 General Election for the Lid Dem leader’s inability to answer questions over whether gay sex was a sin or not.

During 2008 there was a debate on American TV as to whether Piers was gay, a contestant on the US version of Celebrity Apprentice alleged that Piers Morgan was in the closet, because he had asked fellow contestants to take their shirts off during tasks. This caused the then Apprentice boss Donald Trump to ask the question, “You’re calling Piers a homosexual? “I wonder what he thinks of that?” He asked Piers to reenter the board room.

    https://youtu.be/quUnfvIgKQc?t=28m9s

Piers, however, fanned the flames, by kissing a 6 foot 7 Cowboy, Country singer, Trace Adkins in front of the cameras saying, “I’ve always loved a beautiful cowboy” as a joke.

It’s fair to say Trace looked less than pleased.

12 Places it's never been illegal to be gay
12 Places it’s never been illegal to be gay

Many countries have never outlawed female same-sex relationships, however, male on male sexual activity has been outlawed in many country and territories throughout history.

This is a list of countries where it has never been illegal to be a gay male. This list is not an endorsement of LGBT+ rights in each of these territories, rather that, the governments of each country has never outlawed sex between two men.

    Cambodia

LGBT citizens of Cambodia may live without discrimination protections or same-sex marriage, but it has never been illegal to be gay and the age of consent is equalised with heterosexuals.

    Côte D’Ivorie

In private sexual relationships between consenting adults has always been legal in this African nation, which is highly unusual for an African country as the majority of nations on this continent have outlawed sex between two men.

    French Polynesia

There have never been laws against homosexuality in French Polynesia, it has brilliant protections for LGBT people which are in line with France’s legal system.

    Laos

    Poland

Poland is one of the few countries where homosexuality has never been considered a crime. Homosexuality was made illegal when Poland lost its independence in 1795 where the sodomy laws of  Russia, Prussia, and Austria came into force in the occupied Polish lands. They were finally abandoned in 1932.

  • ANSWERS | What did Margaret Thatcher say about gay people?

Margaret Thatcher was the British Prime Minister between 1979 and 1990 – a time where gay and LGBT+ rights were hard fought but seldom won.

What did Margaret Thatcher say about gay people?

It was during this period that gay people suffered the worst healthcare crisis, thanks to AIDS and HIV, the Government’s response was markedly better than that of the US’s. However, Ms Thatcher was hesitant on some of the languages surrounding the information campaign which would be communicated to the citizens of the UK. In annotations on official documents distributed by Norman Fowler, the Secretary of State for Social Services, Thatcher asked, “Do we have to have the section on risky sex? I should have thought it could do immense harm if young teenagers were to read it”.

During Thatcher’s time in power, a new law aimed specifically at those in education was adopted in 1988 called Section 28 in the UK and Section 2A in Scotland. This law prohibited teachers from “intentionally promoting sexuality” or talking about same-sex relationships in any way that would equal them to traditional families.

Needless to say, this policy undoubtedly added to the confusion and fear surrounding HIV and AIDS amongst the younger generation and possibly put back its decrease for decades.

After her time as the country’s PM, Thatcher voted negatively on a number of bills affecting the lives of LGBT people in Britain, including adoption rights for same-sex couples, she also voted yes on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, which requires the need for a father and voted yes on timescale conditions of the repeal of Section 28.

She was absent for a number of votes including, The repeal of Section 28 and on the Equality Act (Sexual Orientation).

    The Anti-Gay Speech

Ms Thatcher barely spoke publicly about homosexuality during her time as PM. In fact, there’s only one speech that she made in which she spoke about homosexuality. It’s widely regarded as her anti-gay speech. This section is just a small portion of a much larger and longer speech, the topics of which reached further than education.

During a speech to the Conservative Party Conference in 1987, Thatcher spoke directly about homosexuality, saying,

“To compete successfully in tomorrow’s world—against Japan, Germany and the United States—we need well-educated, well-trained, creative young people. Because if education is backward today, national performance will be backward tomorrow.

But it’s the plight of individual boys and girls which worries me most. Too often, our children don’t get the education they need—the education they deserve.

And in the inner cities—where youngsters must have a decent education if they are to have a better future—that opportunity is all too often snatched from them by hard left education authorities and extremist teachers.

And children who need to be able to count and multiply are learning anti-racist mathematics—whatever that may be.

Children who need to be able to express themselves in clear English are being taught political slogans.

Children who need to be taught to respect traditional moral values are being taught that they have an inalienable right to be gay

All of those children are being cheated of a sound start in life—yes, cheated.”.

    Positive steps

During the vote to decriminalise homosexuality 50 years ag0 this year, Ms Thatcher, way before she was Prime Minister, voted to decriminalise it.

Tom has been linked to Kick-Ass 2‘s Ella Purnell when the two were allegedly spotted retiring to Tom’s hotel room at the Dorchester.

  • ANSWERS | What does the 2 in LGBTQ2 mean?

The LGBTQ2 is not a widely used acronym and is not widely used outside Canada. However, its popularity is on the rise.

What does the 2 in LGBTQ2 mean?

The 2 in LGBTQ2 stands for ‘two-spirit’. It is an umbrella term for being a “two spirit” described as a Native (North) American who identifies as non-binary, non-cisgendered or genderqueer. It could also refer to someone who identifies as non-heterosexual. It is used to describe certain spiritual people. It is not interchangeable with LGBT Native American.

Wikipedia explains, “it is a sacred, spiritual and ceremonial role that is recognised and confirmed by the Elders of the Two Spirit’s ceremonial community. While some have found the term a useful tool for intertribal organising, not all Native cultures conceptualise gender or sexuality this way, and most tribes use names in their own languages.”

It was adopted in 1990 to replace an outdated and now considered offensive term.

The term is not widely used outside North America.

Gauthier Destenay is the Belgium husband of Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister. Mr Bettel is the only current openly gay world leader. That would make Mr Destenay Luxembourg’s First Gentleman.

The couple got married in a private ceremony in 2015 after being together since 2010. They got engaged in 2014. If you’re wondering who asked who, in an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Mr Bettel revealed it was Gauthier who asked first.

So what does Gauthier Destenay do for a living?

Well, Gauthier is an architect and works for the Belgium architecture company, A3 Architecture. He received his qualification in 2003 and became a partner at the A3 company in 2013. He works as an associate architect.

Does Gauthier appear with Xavier at every event?

Just like the spouses of every head of state, Gauthier attends events which are appropriate for partners to attend, however, Xavier has made it clear that he will not attend events where he and his partner are not welcome.

During an event earlier in 2017 Xavier recalled an incident where an invitation was actually removed when the host found out he had a male partner.

The unnamed country’s officials asked that he not to mention the fact that he was gay, to which Xavier said he would purposely bring up and speak out about homosexuality. The invitation was swiftly removed.
