  • Doctor who help thousands of gay and bi men access PrEP has died at the age of 44

A doctor who was instrumental in making PrEP accessible in the UK has died at the age of just 44.

Doctor Mags Portman was just 44 when she died from a rare form of cancer, according to Buzzfeed News. The doctor became a hero of the gay and bisexual community by making access to the HIV-preventative drug, PrEP easier for those who needed it. She was an HIV consultant at London’s Mortimer Market Centre, one of the capital’s busiest sexual health clinics.

She leaves behind a husband and two young children. She died in the early hours of Wednesday morning in her hometown of Leeds, at a hospice. She had been receiving treatment for mesothelioma, a cancer which affects the lining of the lungs.

The Terrence Higgin’s Trust, the UK’s leading HIV charity called the doctor a pioneer, saying “All of us at Terrence Higgins Trust are deeply saddened by the passing of the brilliant Dr Mags Portman.

Before adding that they pledge to “continue the fight for PrEP in her memory”.

In October 2018 Mags took to her blog to write about her life with cancer and the treatment she received, in a post she titled, “Dancing With Death and Depression”. In the emotional post, the doctor documented how she lived with anxiety and unbearable pain. About anxiety, she wrote, “It reared it’s ugly head so quickly. I was taken completely unawares until was right in the middle of its grip, smothered by it. Rendered completely incapable. The “I can’t” voice in my head persisted, became louder and more repetitive. I would sit and wring my hands, rub my face and head, stand up and then sit down again over and over.”

She revealed that she managed to get help for her anxiety, writing “Thankfully, one of the GPs rang back within an hour and was absolutely great with me. He suggested starting medication (which I was glad about and ready to accept). He suggested Mirtazepine (which I was glad about too, because it also helps with sleep and appetite, and I was hoping for this). He also referred me to the Young Persons Support Team at St Gemma’s Hospice as a lot of my anxiety was around the boys and how we would get through the summer holidays with my deteriorating health.”

Here’s the day of the week and month you’re likely to download a new dating app

For many, downloading a hook up / dating app is the best and most successful way of finding love. We’ve pinpointed which day you’re most likely to download a new app to find love

which was the horniest day in 2018

Thanks to our analytics we’ve managed to pinpoint the day of the week which we received the most traffic for guys looking to download new dating apps.

    Winter blues or Summer horn?

Overall we found that people searched our dating app review page on Sunday afternoons, with searches peaking throughout the months of June and July.

That said, 28th January 2018 was apparently the horniest or loneliest day of the year (depending on how you look at it) with scores of people looking for new dating apps to try out.

Most people landed on our gay dating app review page at 8 PM in the evening, followed by another influx at around 10 PM in the evening.

Interestingly every Sunday THEGAYUK.com sees a surge for dating app reviews or news. Searches for our gay app review page peaked in the Summer (June) but the lowest search was the last weeks of 2018 in December.

However, searches for a more traditional gay chat site, a non-app site, remained pretty constant throughout the year, with June and July being the peak months but with an usual increase in searches in October.

Do people actually find love on apps?

We recently asked our readers about whether they’ve ever found love on a dating app. Only 36 percent of those who answered the poll, had found love and were still together from meeting on an app, with another 10 percent saying they had found love, but it didn’t last.

The majority found that apps were only really good for hookups or one night stands.

Don’t forget you can sign up to our very own social network and start chatting with guys across the UK.

  • People are more likely to do all these things first in front of partner before they share their Netflix account

People are more likely to do all these things first in front of partner before they share their Netflix account

Sex, passing gas – even going on holiday are more likely to happen before a partner decides to share their Netflix account!

    (C) BIGSTOCK

New research shows it takes months and months before you reach the “the comfort zone” with a new partner.

A new study of 2,000 coupled up people found that the biggest signs you’ve entered the comfort zone are allowing your significant other to take care of you when you’re sick, not wearing make-up and not shaving your legs or face.

According to the research, it takes an average of seven months for couples to have their first talk about marriage/kids and about six months to introduce a significant other to their parents.

Milestones such as crying in front of your partner, as well as feeling comfortable enough to snore while sleeping next to your partner, also proved to be big tells that your relationship has reached that next level.

The study, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Mattress Firm, also revealed it takes nearly five months before they’re comfortable showering at the other’s place, nearly six months to get to the point where sitting in silence isn’t awkward and nearly seven months to feel comfortable using the bathroom with the door open.

Sex, passing gas, sharing a bed all come before Netflix!

Sharing shows like House Of Cards will have to wait until at least 7 months according to research! (C) NETFLIX

Surprisingly, the research also found that it takes eight months to share a Netflix account, which is, amusingly, three months longer than it takes the average couple to shower at their significant other’s house.

The results revealed that four in five people say they prefer to sleep in bed with their partner and it takes nearly five months before couples are comfortable doing so.

According to the results, conversation in the bedroom may be a lost art though as only 39 percent of couples say they engage in pillow talk after sex.

And despite annoying habits like snoring and fidgeting, more than half of the couples surveyed report their sleep quality actually improves when sleeping with their partner.

“If you snore, gravity is not your friend, but a slight elevation to your neck and head alleviates some of gravity’s pull and allows for a more open airway,” said Dr. Sujay Kansagra, pediatric neurologist and Mattress Firm sleep health consultant.

Still, most people are happier once the relationship hits the comfort zone as 65 percent of couples sleep in the same bed every night and 70 percent of respondents say they don’t miss sleeping alone.

“While it’s no surprise that more couples sleep better when in bed with their partner, a restful night’s sleep can be a challenge – especially if your partner snores like a freight train, like mine. With an adjustable base, I’m able to elevate his head and quiet his snoring, which has improved sleep quality for us both,” said Michelle Stokely, National Retail Merchandising Manager, Mattress Firm.

Top 10 things couples are most comfortable doing in front of each other

    1. Letting their partner see them/take care of them when they’re ill (73 percent/1,468)
    2. Not wearing make-up (63 percent/1,266)
    3. Crying (63 percent/1,252)
    4. Snoring in their sleep (60 percent/1,208)
    5. Showering at their place (59 percent/1,186)
    6. Leaving the door open while using the bathroom (56 percent/1,117)
    7. Not shaving (55 percent/1,103)
    8. Being naked around the house (55 percent/1,092)
    9. Sleeping in a hair wrap or bonnet (40 percent/804)
    10. Wearing a retainer to bed (34 percent/680)

How long into a relationship it takes on average to first experience things (shortest to longest)

    1. Sex (4 months and 17 days)
    2. Sleep in same bed (4 months and 21 days)
    3. Shower at the other’s place (4 months and 29 days)
    4. Cry in front of partner (5 months and 24 days)
    5. Sit in silence without it being awkward (5 months and 27 days)
    6. Talk about your/her period (6 months and 13 days)
    7. Be naked around the house (6 months and 18 days)
    8. Share a deep secret (6 months and 19 days)
    9. Let your partner take care/see you when you’re sick (6 months and 21 days)
    10. Use the bathroom with the door open (6 months and 24 days)
    11. Pass gas in front of partner (6 months and 25 days)
    12. Talk about marriage/kids (7 months and 1 day)
    13. Go on vacation together (7 months and 7 days)
    14. Share a password (7 months and 17 days)
    15. Share a Netflix/Hulu account (7 months and 24 days)

Michaels defence lawyer David Rudolf is the unlikely star of the series, providing intense and gripping commentary throughout. Once you’re finished with The Staircase you need to take a look at the extras in the main menu. Don’t say we didn’t warn you about the mind blowing ‘Owl Theory’…

He told his audience, “when we want to get naughty, we stick on the jockstrap” before re-arranging his tackle in the tiny underwear. He also revealed that he sometimes wears the undies to the gym when he works out. Although according to experts jockstraps aren’t the best workout clothing.

  • Prostate Cancer: Researchers are reinventing the PSA test using nanotechnology

Prostate Cancer: Researchers are reinventing the PSA test using nanotechnology

The current test for Prostate Cancer is known to be unreliable, so researchers are using nanotech to make detection “much more accurate”.

    marijana1 / Pixabay

According to charity Prostate Cancer UK the current PSA test, a blood test that measures the amount of prostate-specific antigens in the blood, can be inaccurate, which is concerning when nearly 12,000 men (and trans women who have a prostate) a year die from prostate cancer.

It can, according to the charity, give false readings and miss some cancer signs.

But Professor Paula Mendes’ research has identified over 50 forms of PSA, all with the same protein but with different sugars attached to it.

Importantly, different types of sugars are linked to different problems with the prostate, including cancer.

“The current test for prostate cancer scans the body for all types of PSAs, but we now know that only four of these forms of PSA are linked to prostate cancer,” she explains.

However nanoparticles can detect the right type of PSA.

    jarmoluk / Pixabay

According to Prostate Cancer UK, Mendes’ plan is to take advantage of this, and create a test where the type of PSA, rather than the amount, is detected. It uses tiny, coloured nanoparticles, which contain a ‘pocket’ that specifically binds the PSA sugars associated with prostate cancer, like a lock and key. The more such sugars it detects, the higher a man’s chance of having aggressive prostate cancer that needs urgent treatment.

“At the end of two years, we want to demonstrate that our technology can detect high- or low-risk prostate cancer with high accuracy,” says Professor Mendes.

She then hopes to run a larger clinical trial and ultimately make the test part of a future screening programme for prostate cancer.

  • Was Don Shirley gay, bisexual or straight?

As a new film about the life of Don Shirley documents the life of the extraordinary musician, here’s everything you need to know about his sexuality and marriage.

    Was Don Shirley gay,
    By Source, Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=59605247

Don Shirley is the subject of a brand new biopic film called Green Book and in it, the filmmakers’ touch on Don’s private and romantic life – including a scene where Don embarks on a fling with another man.

Don, who died in 2013, at the age of 86, was notoriously tight-lipped about his romantic life, but we do know that he was married to a woman called Jean C. Hill. However, they divorced. He said in an interview that he chose music and his career over his marriage, explaining, “I didn’t have the constitution to do a husband act as well as a concert pianist act because I was dead set on being what I had been trained all my life to be.”

In the film, it alludes to Don being gay, however, he never actually came out or confirmed any of the rumours. The film was co-written and produced by Nick Vallelonga, the son of Frank Anthony Vallelonga Sr., who is portrayed in the film.

It is worth noting that Don’s family have hit out at the film’s accuracy, calling it a “symphony of lies”. They say they were not consulted by the film makers during the making of the movie. Don’s nephew Edwin expressed that his uncle’s depiction was “very harmful” and “100 per cent wrong.”

Speaking about his brother’s sexuality, Edwin said, “He was as open about his sexuality as he thought it was anybody else’s right to know.” Edwin offered as an example, “If you were to ask him, ‘Dr. Shirley, are you gay?’ He might answer, ‘Why? Are you interested?’ If the answer was, ‘No,’ then he’d say, ‘Well, it’s none of your business,’”

However the truth is that Don may not have publicly acknowledged his sexuality, he may have been bisexual.

In a heartbreaking video, TOWIE star Bobby Norris reveals that he has been the subject of cruel cyberbullying including waking up to a vile homophobic slur and body shaming.

Taking to Instagram, in a video, Bobby told his 792,000 fans that while normally he lets “trolls be trolls”, he had to speak out about the latest onslaught of cyber trolling, which included a horrific anti-gay slur.

“Hello guys. I just wanted to do a quick message because I’ve seen a lot of stuff online and on social media written about me.

“For example, [that] I’ve had a face lift done and had a chin reduction which is all news to me.

“Quite bad anxiety and my confidence is often quite low”

The star also revealed that he suffers from anxiety attacks and admitted that his confidence was “quite low”.

He said, “Now, those of you who don’t know, I do suffer with quite bad anxiety and my confidence is often quite low. When you read what people say about you sometimes, there’s no wonder why people feel like that.

He added: ‘Apparently I’m fat, I’m the Human Ken Doll. Nine times out of ten, I just bite my tongue and I’ll let trolls be trolls.’

Today I’ve had to do this video because to wake up and see that I’ve been called a ‘vile f****t’ is completely disgusting.

‘It’s homophobic and I really think the person who wrote that should question their own life”.

Many of his fans congratulated him for calling out the trolls and told him to only take heed of the positive message sent by his fans.
