This guy makes an amazing observation about musicals

Have you ever noticed that so many many musicals open with a song about the town in which they are set!

    Review of Vanties the musical
    CREDIT: Pamela Raith

Think Witches Of Eastwick, Hairspray and Little Shop Of Horrors, hell even Aladdin, lets you know you’re in Saudi Arabia.

Comedian Matt Buechele has created a video to demonstrate what he thinks the first song in every musical sounds like and it’s uncanny we tell you – uncanny.

In the song, called “The Name Of The City We Live IN” which starts slow and then becomes much more upbeat after the first verse, introduces various characters, including two secondary characters, one who tells you what they do for living, the other you can tell is a mum,” because the three kids I’m holding” a “comedic relief” character who has a stupid voice and then the lead character who arrives in town because of a bet or a dare gone wrong. And then, there is, of course, the key change.

However it’s the last line of the song, which sets up the entire musical – Check it out below.

  • Historical Homos aims to “make history gay again”by celebrating historic queer icons

Historical Homos aims to “make history gay again”by celebrating historic queer icons

Historical Homos, a London-based Instagram blog and publication dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ history, has one simple mission: to “Make History Gay Again”.

Developed by Sebastian and Lucy Hendra, a brother-sister creative team based between NYC and London, Historical Homos aims to make the legacy of history’s greatest LGBTQ+ figures more visible in popular culture.

Sebastian, a writer and amateur historian, and Lucy, a graphic designer, started Historical Homos in 2017 when they noticed a lack of awareness among their generation about significant LGBT figures of the past: “It’s weird. We have this vibrant community, known for its camp and creativity; and then there’s all this history. But there’s nothing connecting them. There’s very little LGBTQ+ history that speaks our language.”

“Our audience is the RuPaul generation”, they say, “the scores of people – gay, straight, bi, queer, questioning – who have grown up with LGBTQ+ subcultures and who want to participate in them.”

Lucy’s artwork is plastered in bold graphics and pop-art collage, while Sebastian’s acid pen delivers tell-all stories about the lives and contributions of history’s great ‘YesterQueers,’ from popes and monarchs to writers, artists, scientists, and adventurers – all with an eye to the parallels, echoes, and inevitable clashes with our contemporary culture.

Drawing on the work of academics in various Queer Studies disciplines, Historical Homos aims to promote a global picture of the LGBTQ+ community’s past and their often starring roles in human civilisation.

They cast a wide net through time and space to connect the disparate strands of this rich heritage, threading together hundreds of remarkable names – some famous, some unexpected, some forgotten – through detailed research, engaging wit, and vibrant illustration.

“It’s a bit like Horrible Histories, but for grownups. And gayer.”

Historical Homos began as an Instagram blog, where it has grown a loyal following of 8K+ followers. In London, where Sebastian and Lucy currently live, they also host live events, from pop-up galleries to (self-described) “sloppier” Halloween parties.

    The pair say,

“Our followers like us because we help them see a legacy that is written out of textbooks, legislated out of schools, and generally forgotten (or purposely avoided) in most heteronormative narratives of history. But queers have been around forever.

“Everyone knows that. We’ve just got to make more noise about it.”

In November 2018, the pair self-published an initial volume, Historical Homos Volume One, which offers readers 7 humorous profiles of famous LGBTQ+ figures, richly illustrated in a 70-page, high-gloss book. This first book covers well-known names — like Emperor Hadrian of Rome and Virginia Woolf — as well as lesser-known gems like the Chevalier D’Éon, a cross-dressing, genderqueer French spy from the 18th century.

HH Vol One is meant to serve as a teaser of a more ambitious series to come, which will cover the history of the world through the eyes of its most compelling Historical Homos. The 10-part series will begin development in February 2019 with the launch of a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.

With HH Vol One, Sebastian and Lucy wish to create a physical, engaging reminder that the narrative of queer history extends back to the earliest days of human history, from ancient Rome and 17th century Sweden to Weimar Berlin and Stonewall-era New York. They hope to dispel the all-too-common perception, frequently perpetuated in more academic treatments of the subject, that the histories of homosexuality and queer identities begin with the invention of the term “homosexuality” in the 19th century.

“Queer lives — valid, queer lives — have always existed in history, from Hadrian’s Wall to Stonewall,” they say. “Nobody gets to tell us different.”

That said, the pair acknowledges their debt to the work of academics in the field: “We get to celebrate everyone in queer history, from the Ice Age to the 21st century, precisely because we’re not encumbered by the need to conform to academic trends and theories. But we couldn’t produce anything without the libraries of research out there that have uncovered such rich histories.”

The next volume in the Historical Homos series will cover queers at the dawn of civilisation, ‘from Paleo-Poofs and Neolithic-Nancies down to the considerably more Homophobic Hebrews.’

It will be published in November 2019.

The entire editorial team has been laid off

    CREDIT: Ryazan / BIGSTOCK

Grindr‘s digital magazine, Into, which was launched in 2017, has been effectively shuttered with all its editorial staff, contributors and social media workers laid off as the Chinese-owned dating app company looks to focus on other areas, including “video”.

Scott Chen, who was last month lambasted for saying that he believed that marriage was “a holy matrimony between a man and a woman” (a statement which he was forced to clarify) wrote to the outlet’s team to say the company was going to focus its efforts on video.

He announced the layoffs in an email, which Out have published.

    He wrote,

    “Team,

As with any growing business, we have to continually evaluate what is best for Grindr. After a thoughtful and collaborative process, we decided to modify INTO’s content mix to rely more heavily on video. This decision was driven by the high user engagement and development we see through channels such as video and YouTube.

This was a difficult decision, but with this new strategic focus, several INTO employees will be leaving the company. Our leadership is proud of the work INTO has done and know that it has served an important role in our business and overall mission.

We want to thank our INTO colleagues for their contributions to Grindr and wish them well. In the meantime, we ask that we all stay focused on fulfilling our important mission together and serving the LGBTQ+ community.

In the coming weeks, we will be sharing our 2019 goals and beginning the process to redefine our mission, vision, and values as an organization.

    Best,
    Scott”

According to available stats from SimilarWeb, IntoMore.com receives over 7.5 million unique readers a month, bigger than all of its main competitors.

Into‘s staff replied with a statement, which read,

“During our nearly two years, we created incredible, award-winning content for and about the LGBTQ community worldwide,

“We have been awarded with a GLAAD nomination and honored by the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA); we were also given a special award from the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund (TLDEF). We told stories of transgender prisoners forced to endure nightmarish treatment behind bars, LGBTQ asylum seekers looking for hope and refuge in the United States, and drag queens fighting for space and community in small town Tennessee.

“We shared the hopes and joys of the LGBTQ community, our successes and setbacks, and our triumphs and heartaches during a vulnerable political moment. We aimed to give a voice to those who need one now more than ever, a platform for them to see themselves represented wholly.”

FELICIA HEALS: May enter UK version of Drag Race

Drag Race’s “first cis-gender” considered contestant has said that she would consider auditioning for the UK version of the show.

Speaking with THEGAYUK Felicia Heals said “who knows where life will take me” when we asked her whether she’d consider enterting the greatly anticipated UK version of RuPaul’s Drag Race, which is due to air in the UK on BBC 3 in 2019.

Felicia made headlines around the world, when Drag Race Thailand showed a segement where she auditioned to be part of the show. However, unfortunately she didn’t make the top 14, but has vowed to try out again for season three as long as the process remained “open to other genders“.

The bio-queen also paid tribute to UK drag telling THEGAYUK that she was a fan of British drag, “you guys have some amazing queens” but said that the flight to the UK from Thailand might be a little too far for her to join the show.

Championing non-traditional drag, which usually sees men dressed as heightened versions of women, Russian-born Heals said that she hoped the UK would be as open as the Thailand version, saying “I do hope the UK version will be open to all genders like drag race thailand is”.

Casting is currently open for the UK version with queens urged to fill out an application at the Talent Talks website.

  • Here’s how you can protect yourself from online shopping scams, from an ex scammer

Here’s how you can protect yourself from online shopping scams, from an ex scammer

According to research, 15,000 shoppers were conned out of more than £11 million over the Christmas period.

    (C) DEPOSITPHOTOS

Here’s how you can fight back against online scams, as ex-scammers reveals some of their tricks

    1. Look out for the padlock on websites. The padlock symbol next to the website’s address is a clear indication that this website is secure, and you can trust that if you put your bank details in, they will be safe. If there isn’t a padlock on a site, don’t put your bank details in.

    2. Fake online shops. Fake online shops are common. The best thing to do is to look for online reviews of the site and if possible, find a contact number and give them a call. If there’s no number, it could be a sign that the site isn’t legitimate.

    3. Fake emails. There are loads of fake emails out there and most of the time, you can recognise them instantly. However, scammers are getting smarter and they’ll make the email look like it’s coming from a legitimate company called ‘spoofing’ by putting the company’s name in the email and branding to deceive the recipient into clicking on a link in the email.

The best thing to do in this situation is to find the help email on the genuine website and email asking if it’s from them. If it’s not, mark it as spam, block the sender and delete it.

    4. Beware of auction sites. On auction sites, like eBay, scammers will claim they’re selling something but in reality, they have nothing to sell and will just take your money. To prevent this, you should look at the seller’s reviews and see the feedback they’ve had. If they have poor or no feedback, avoid that seller.

    5. Phishing emails. Phishing emails will focus on tricking you into visiting fake websites and entering personal information or bank details. If an email comes in from an email address you don’t recognise, Google it and see if anyone else has had a similar email from them. If you don’t trust the email, don’t click on anything and just delete it and block them.

The UK’s leading cloud distributor has worked with ex-scammers to create a guide on how to protect yourself from online scams in the January sales.

intY has teamed up with three former scammers to create a comprehensive guide to helping to protect consumers from online scams. Statistics from Action Fraud show that over the Christmas period last year, more than 15,000 shoppers were conned out of more than £11 million. There’s also research that shows that consumers have spent more than £650,000 on online shopping last year.

    ntY CEO, Craig Joseph, said,

“The January sales mean that there are loads of bargains out there, especially online. However, this also means that at this time of year people will take advantage of this mentality of cheap deals in January.

“We partner with vendors who supply security services so that people can shop safely online, and these sales have increased recently due to an increasing awareness of online scams. Since seeing this increase, we decided to team up with ex-scammers to ensure people are staying safe online this year, hopefully it makes people more aware of the type of scams there are and how to avoid falling victim to them.”

“It is with extreme heartache, that I have to announce the passing of an original industry pioneer, legend and icon: Miss Carol Channing,

“I admired her before I met her, and have loved her since the day she stepped … or fell rather … into my life. It is so very hard to see the final curtain lower on a woman who has been a daily part of my life for more than a third of it. We supported each other, cried with each other, argued with each other, but always ended up laughing with each other.”

Boll added, “Saying good-bye is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, but I know that when I feel those uncontrollable urges to laugh at everything and/or nothing at all, it will be because she is with me, tickling my funny bone.”

  • DILEMMA | Will I be forced to pay for a child for which I donated sperm?

DILEMMA | Will I be forced to pay for a child for which I donated sperm?

Read Matt Parr’s response to whether a man who donated sperm 10 years ago will be liable to pay for the child’s upbringing.

    TBIT / Pixabay

    Dear Dilemmas

I am really concerned after reading about a man in the papers who donated sperm to a lesbian couple some years ago who is now being chased by the CSA who is demanding he pay towards the child’s upbringing, even though he’s not on the child’s birth certificate.

I’m in a similar situation. I donated sperm to a couple 10 years ago – and I’m wondering if they have any rights to make me pay for their child. I’ve never met the child and I’m no longer in the couples’ life as I moved towns a few years back.

My name isn’t on the birth certificate and I’ve not been a part of the child’s life at all. If they wanted to, could they get in contact with the CSA and make me pay?

Are there any legal protections for men like me?

    Paul in Leicester

    Dear Paul,

The answer to this question is dependent on whether you donated the sperm through a registered Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA)-licensed clinic; if you did then you are not financially liable for the child, nor do you have any parental responsibility for the child, equally you have no say over the upbringing of the child. If this is the case, the birth mother will be the legal mother and her civil partner or wife will be the “second legal parent” (but not “mother” as the law does not allow a person to have two legal mothers).

If you donated the sperm without using a HFEA-licensed clinic as an intermediary (such as an informal agreement between friends or through an internet agency) then you could be deemed to be the child’s legal father (whether or not you are named on the birth certificate) and could be obliged to financially support the child as necessary. Ultimately, the child’s mother may be able to bring a successful claim through the Child Support Agency (CSA).

If you feel that it is likely action will be taken against you, it is best to be proactive. In my experience the worst thing you could do is bury your head in the sand and hope it goes away. Sometimes a simple offer of some contribution towards the maintenance of the child will avoid often lengthy, expensive court proceedings.

I would advise however that you seek the advice of a specialist solicitor in this area who would be much better placed to give you a clearer picture of your obligations.
