    ★★★★☆ | Coming Clean

    Before the late Kevin Elyot wrote his hit 1994 play My Night with Reg, he wrote Coming Clean (which opened in 1982). It’s now back in the West End after a recent successful run at the King’s Head Theatre.

    Both shows deal with the trials and tribulations of being gay, and being in gay relationships. But where My Night with Reg had an AIDS backdrop, Coming Clean takes place during a simplier time, before the HIV crises and before gay men were dying right and left and centre.

    At the heart of Coming Clean is the story of a bi-racial couple who, after five years together, obviously have issues. Tony (a natural Lee Knight) and Greg (Stanton Plummer-Cambridge) still love each other, but there is slight tension in the air.

    Greg is a successful teacher and writer, while Tony is a not-so-successful writer who writes when he feels like it. And then there is their neighbour William (a fabulous Eliot Hadley), who is funny, camp and all so great to have around. But Tony needs more time to write, and says he doesn’t have time to clean the Kentish Town flat that he and Tony live in, so enter Robert (Tom Lambert), who is hired to clean for them.

    It’s obvious where this biting play goes next, but it wonderfully takes us with it through sharp wit and extremely funny one-liners.

    And Coming Clean successfully incorporates early 1980’s songs by, among others, Men at Work and Barbra Streisand (where her and Barry Gibbs voices on the song ‘Guilty’ are just like butter) to set the mood of the times.

    The actors are all very good, with Hadley just about stealing the show (he comes back near the end of the play as a totally different character – think German Leather), and Knight looks very comfortable on stage.

    It’s an intimate stage that could double as a large living room (Trafalgar Studios), and it’s even more of a treat for those audience members who sit in the first row, as they get to be very very close to Lamberts’ bits. This show is highly recommended!

    Drag Race Thailand has cast its very first cis-gender drag queen called Felicia Heals in the upcoming series on the audition show, which premiered last week. The queen says she’s a “dominatrix diva with the double Ds to prove it” and has only been doing drag for 12 months.

    Unfortunately, Felicia didn’t end up in the top 14 queens, but told THEGAYUK.com that she plans to enter Season 3 of Drag Race Thailand, saying “I’m going to be auditioning for season 3 if it (is) open to other genders”

    Speaking to GSN Heals says that she decided against being a drag king revealing “it didn’t feel right”.

    Felicia Heals has said that she hopes that her appearance in the show will encourage other cisgender drag queens, also known as “bio queens” to be “more accepted and loved”.

    The I’m A Celebrity star John Barrowman has shared a cute of picture of him and his then husband-to-be Scott. According to the post, when the photo was taken the couple had been dating for just a year.

    However fans were quick to point out that he looked like another celebrity, namely a young John Travolta but also a young Tom Cruise. The pair met in 1993. They met during a production of Rope the Chichester Festival Theatre – Scott was there to watch John in the play.

    The pair were civilly partnered in 2006 and then legally married in the state of California in 2013 when the US Supreme Court made gay marriage legal across all States.

    We asked Public Health Practitioner Jose Perez de la Cruz, BPubHtlth his thoughts on whether its safe to have sex whilst you have haemorrhoids

    Anal sex has the potential to inflame pre-existing haemorrhoids (piles), though research shows that it does not cause them in the first place. So long as the piles are not actively bleeding or painful at the time on intercourse then it is probably safe to have sex. If they are bleeding or there is inflammation though, this means that the natural protective barrier formed by the skin and mucous membranes is not at its optimum which if exposed to an STI can make transmission more likely.

    I would recommend using Preparation H or Germoloids (all available on Amazon) to help control pain and inflammation and to reduce swelling.

    During sex, it is also important that you use a good water based lubricant, particularly during acts of multiple people or high-frequency sexual activity as this will reduce the chance of any inflammation being caused. They are very unlikely to burst during normal sexual activity, even in the case of sex parties, threesomes or orgies. If creams etc. though do not fix the underlying problem and I would recommend as a permanent solution surgical intervention.

    This can now be done almost painlessly by syringing the haemorrhoids and a referral can be obtained by going to see your GP. There are also a number of private clinics undertaking the therapy which do not require GP referral.

    This couple had their wedding in the deepest tunnel in the UK

    Kate and Rebecca tied the knot in one of the UK’s most unsual venues, the longest, deepest and highest canal tunnels in Britain.

    The historic tunnel and visitor centre, which is owned by waterways and wellbeing charity the Canal & River Trust, is set in a picturesque location on the edge of the Peak District National Park just outside Huddersfield in West Yorkshire and was the stunning setting for the marriage of Kate Stephenson and Rebecca (Becks) Errett, both of Holmfirth.

    The couple, who share the same birthday and are both 36 years old, decided to tie the knot at Standedge’s Visitor Centre after viewing a number of other Yorkshire locations and deciding that the iconic tunnel was the ideal place for them.

    With the wedding date being right in the heart of the festive season, the happy couple gave their ceremony, wedding breakfast and party a Christmas theme, complete with a carol-singing choir, Christmas trees, fairy lights and a meal on sharing platters to mimic the traditional Christmas Day lunch, while guests danced late in to the night.

    While not originally hailing from Yorkshire, Kate and Rebecca have long roots in the county having met 17 years ago while reading for a degree in performance design and production at the now defunct Bretton Hall College of Education, the Grade II listed former manor house that is now being developed into a luxury hotel within the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

    The couple met on the second day of the course and have been together ever since, while the wedding proposal from Becks to Kate came in a novel way at a breakout room game in Liverpool where the ring was hidden in the last puzzle.

    Kate Stephenson said, “We were looking for a venue that could host the ceremony and wedding breakfast in one location, but also somewhere that was typically Yorkshire in its essence and combined a rustic feel with some industrial heritage. We looked at many different locations but as soon as we set foot in Standedge we both realised it was our dream venue. Those dreams came true in the most amazing way. We’d like to thank all the Standedge staff who helped make it such as special day.”

    Iain Weston of the Canal & River Trust which manages the Standedge site said, “We are delighted to have hosted the first same-sex wedding at Standedge Tunnel and to be part of Kate and Becks’ special Christmas present to each other. We would like to wish them many congratulations and much happiness in the future.”

    Standedge Tunnel, which dates from 1811 and stretches for more than 5km (3 miles) from Marsden in West Yorkshire to Diggle in Greater Manchester, was licensed to host wedding ceremonies in August 2017. Weddings take place in the fabulous Thomas Bourne Room which has exposed bricks, cast-iron columns and a wood-beamed ceiling. Large bright windows overlook the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and couples can arrive or depart by barge. The room holds up to 200 people. Find out more click here

    Heartbreaking stories emerge from the “gay purge” in Chechnya

    A new “gay purge” is reportedly underway in Chechnya, as new stories emerge of the horrid and violence levied against LGBT+ people in the region.

    Working as slaves, daily beatings and torture so horrid that it cannot be shared are some of the accusations levied against Chechyna‘s authorities as reports of a new “gay purge” circulate on social media.

    Political scientist, Rémy Bonny says he has been in contact with two men who claim that Chechen authorities have started to detain and torture homosexuals again in 2018.

    The previous purge in 2017 was widely reported. There were horrific details of gay men being detained, tortured and even killed, in the region after the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov has said that he wanted to eliminate gay men from the region by the start of Ramadan.

    Up to a hundred men, suspected of being gay were held, against their wills, in what some media outlets called “concentration camps”.

    Speaking with THEGAYUK.com Rémy Bonny said that he was in contact with two survivors who are now in the EU who he says provided “detailed and credible intelligence” about the many human rights violations against the LGBT+ community in Chechnya.

    Tortured by his relative

    The first witness, who has not been named, is now seeking refuge in Belgium, says that he was tortured by his relative, who works for the Chechen police and only escape after paying a huge amount of money.

    He claims that he was left in his cold cell with just a t-shirt and jeans and fed only bread and water.

    He was caught after been framed by friends speaking to Bonny the victim said, “There was a video in which I spoke in the apartment of a friend. I was framed by guys from my city that I have known almost all my life (this video was made in May of 2018). I didn’t even know that I was being shot. And they took me only in July .. in this video, I said that I don’t like this power and we do not have the freedom to choose .. but the topic was also ‘my friend’”.

    Detained for 55 days

    The second witness provided intel about his former boyfriend, who still lives in Chechnya. The boyfriend was detained, according to Bonny, but because there was no real evidence he was held as a suspected drug-user.

    He was held at a facility in Grozny run by Adam Delimkhanov, who is a family member of Ramzan Kadyrov.

    The victim says he was bullied on a daily basis and taken to work every morning in a van, without pay, “as slaves – for free”.

    The victim was able to overhear guard’s conversations that other gay people were being held at the centre.

    Drunken behaviour, bad smells and poor hygiene are amongst some of the deal breakers for gay men across the globe. Writing in Reddit, users wrote about the things that turned them off in the bedroom.

    Unsurprisingly bad smells and poor personal hygiene were big factors, with one user saying “Smell. A man has to smell clean. If he smells bad, he’s out. That might be smokers breath, or cheesy foreskin, or body odour, or whatever. If I smell him before we hook up and he stinks, he’s not even getting into the bedroom”

    Another added, “Stinky foreskin is the absolute worst thing in the world.”

    However not everybody has an issue with smell, one user said, “I’m the opposite: he has to smell. I don’t like perfumed soaped clean freaks.”

    Former Big Brother star Brian Dowling says he’s shunning expensive labels saying he’s “spoilt rotten” by his husband, but is now making do with a nose clipper!

    It seems as though a nose hair clipper is enough to keep Brian Dowling happy these days as he celebrates 16 years together with his partner, Arthur Gourounlian, who he married in 2015 in a lavish wedding in Ireland.

    Taking to social media the former Celebrity Big Brother winner and presenter said that despite being spoiled rotten by his partner of 16 years, receiving thousands of pounds worth of gifts every year, that this year’s Christmas offerings of a beard trimmer, electric toothbrush and a nose hair trimmer were all part of a shift in values.

    He wrote that he had been spoilt rotten by his partner with expensive gifts like Louis Vuitton luggage, designer shoes and fragrances – but there’s been an “almighty shift” and he’s waved goodbye to the pricey labels.

    He wrote, “During the many years of our courtship at Christmas I would be so excited to see what @gourounlian would get me. Now over the years I have to admit I’ve been SPOILED ROTTEN. From Louis Vuitton luggage to designer shoes & fragrances I was LOVING LIFE. But this year how ever there was an ALMIGHTY shift. Gone was all of my labels and a hello to (A) Beard Trimmer (B) Electric Toothbrush & (C) the killer THE NOSE TRIMMER. Am really wondering is this down to my age, or knowing each other for over 16 years?”

    However despite his assurances, the labels were taking a back seat, one fan couldn’t help but notice the huge Jo Malone candle in his bathroom, which retails at £300.

    Writing in Frontpage Mag, gay right-winger and journalist Milo Yiannopoulos says he’s seeking asylum in the US.

    Milo Yiannopoulos is seeking refuge in the USA, calling the UK “Islamized Britain”, despite less than 6 percent of the UK’s population actually being Muslim. He also referred to European Islamification a “cancer” that has “metastasized”.

    He also wrote that despite being eligible for a green card, because he married a US citizen, he is seeking asylum – so that he never has to return to a country where there are “so many citizens eager to see me imprisoned or dead.”

    Becoming a target

    He says that he fears that he could become a target as “surely no one is at greater risk of random attacks in the street than a famous gay conservative writer known for his uncompromising defenses of Western civilization and his critiques of oppressive, sexist religious customs like the burka”.

    He pointed out that a poll for Channel 4 found that half of all British Muslims think homosexuality should be illegal, and a quarter of them want sharia law instituted in the UK and a poll of 500 Muslims found that there was zero tolerance for homosexuality in a poll conducted a decade ago.

    Milo Yiannopoulos who controversially said that he chose to be gay confirmed to THEGAYUK.com in 2018 when it comes to the nature vs. nurture debate surrounding homosexuality, said, “I thought the only people who believe in 100% nurture are the poor fools who think a man can suddenly decide he is a woman”.

    Milo says he’s consulted an immigration lawyer, who thinks that his plight is “worth a try”.

    THEATRE REVIEW | Songs for Nobodies, Ambassadors Theatre, London

    ★★★★☆ | Songs for Nobodies

    Songs for Nobodies is actually songs for everybody in a new one-woman show now playing in the West End.

    Australian Bernadette Robinson treats the audience to her ability of being able to sing, uncanningly, like several very famous female singers. But before we get to hear her sing the five voices included in this show Robinson sets up by five fictional characters who each come in contact with each singer. Before she sings the fabulous ‘Come Rain or Come Shine’ by Judy Garland, Robinsons’ character is Bea Appleton, a bathroom attendant at the Plaza Athénée on the night of Garland’s famous Carnegie Hall appearance. Robinson as Appleton goes on to tell the story of their fictional encounter and then breaks out into song. And the same goes for when Robinson sings Patsy Cline’s beautiful ‘Crazy.’ Robinson is now an usher in Kansas City and meets Cline in her dressing Room. Similar monologues set her up singing as Billie Holiday and Maria Callas, but it’s Robinson singing Edith Piaf’s ’Non, Je ne Regrette Rien’ that brings down the house.

    But for a 90-minute show with no interval, there are a mere 9 songs sung. It’s a shame that Robinson’s speaking voice and not her singing voice encompasses most of the show. It’s a very beautiful singing voice, especially in such an intimate venue as the Ambassadors Theatre.

    Songs for Nobodies, written by Joanna Murray-Smith, (and named as such because of the characters Robinson plays as opposed to the characters she performs as), is a show starring a woman with a special voice that’s a gift, and is now playing only up until February 23, 2019.
