  • COMMENT | Social Media: Is forgiveness a forgotten concept?

    Sometimes people are full of sanctimonious self-satisfying pandering to the masses actions.

    In the name of reasonableness do we not all have a past? I know I have said things in the past I am not proud of. I probably hold opinions now, some would disagree with.

    I loathe being near people who smoke, possibly more than any other person than an ex-smoker! It is those who are reformed who often have the strongest opposite view of the things they have taken part in.

    Life is about growth. We only learn who we are by experiencing life and that includes making mistakes.

    Whether it is an editor, a politician, a member of the local parish council, a film star or a worker at the checkout at the local supermarket, we are all likely to have sinned.

    “Let he or she who hath not sinned cast the first stone.” John 8:7

    Where would we be without forgiveness and understanding of change to promote growth. The best example I can think of where not holding a grudge against past actions would be the Germany of the Second World War, through to reunification and where it is now a strong European power.

    Please give it a rest. It is getting to be more frequent than a re-run on the BBC

  • Gay Times fires editor after offensive social media comments

    Gay Times magazine has fired the newly appointed Editor, Josh Rivers, following the unearthing of dozens of offensive tweets.

    Gay Times magazine has taken steps to fire the editor, Josh Rivers, following on from an investigation by Buzzfeed into the social media posts of the new appointee.

    In a statement, the magazine said Rivers’ employment had been terminated with “immediate effect” and that all previously contributed content by the former employee had been removed and that the planned revamp of the magazine, due on the 30th November, will go ahead.

     

    It went on to apologise for any offence that was caused and said it did not tolerate the views published by Rivers.

    Rivers who was working on a mandate to promote inclusivity and diversity at the magazine described Jews as “gross” and directed hatred towards lesbians, overweight people, the disabled and Asian and Chinese people in the tweets unearthed by Buzzfeed.

    In a post published on Twitter, Rivers wrote, that he was “sorry” and describe the tweets as “hateful”.

    Rapper Lil Peep, who came out as bisexual earlier this year has died.

    Early reports that he died of a suspected overdose, he was just 21.

    Lil Peep, real name, Gustav Åhr, who a well-known Youtuber who had accumulated millions of plays. His death was confirmed on social media by his manager Chase Oretega.

    He said, “I’ve been expecting this call for a year. Mother f***”

    In an interview with Pitchfork, the entertainer shared how music was his ‘channel’ for dealing with his issues surrounding mental health.

    He said,

    “I suffer from depression and some days I wake up and I’m like, F***, I wish I didn’t wake up. That was part of why I moved to California, trying to get away from the place that was doing that to me, and the people I was around. I realized it was just myself — it’s a chemical imbalance in my brain”.

    In August the entertainer came out as bisexual on his Twitter feed saying “yes I’m bi sexual”.

    The star had been active on his social media accounts up to 12 hours prior to his death.

    Lil Peep, real name Gustav Åhr was born in New York, USA in 1996. He has released one album Come Over When You’re Sober (Part 1) and five EPS.His songs “White Wine”, “Benz Truck” and “The Way I See Things” have each gained over four million views on YouTube.

  • Star columnist threatens to walk from Gay Times after editor’s foul tweets unearthed

    Gay Times‘ star fitness columnist, Charlie King has threatened to walk from the title unless the Editor, Josh Rivers is fired.

    Charlie King, who has contributed to Gay Times magazine for two years as their fitness expert and was their cover star in January this year, has threatened to walk from the legendary title unless a new editor is found.

    Taking to social media, King told his 420,000 Twitter followers that he would not work with anyone like Mr Rivers, “apology or not”.

    Speaking to THEGAYUK.com King said, “I absolutely love the magazine and trust they have done the right thing”.

    Yesterday it emerged that Josh Rivers, who had only just been promoted to the outlet’s Editor in October had sent dozens of offensive tweets aimed numerous minority groups. The tweets were sent between 2010 and 2015.

    Rivers who was working on a mandate to promote inclusivity and diversity at the magazine described Jews as “gross” and directed hatred towards lesbians, overweight people, the disabled and Asian and Chinese people in the tweets unearthed by Buzzfeed.

    In a post published on Twitter, Rivers wrote, that he was “sorry” and describe the tweets as “hateful”.

    Gay Times reacted swiftly to denounce Rivers’ words and said that he was suspended, pending an investigation.

  • TV REVIEW | Red Dwarf XII: Skipper

    

Next year Red Dwarf will celebrate its 30th anniversary: a fact that has been marked by many lovingly inserted callbacks throughout the last two series of the show – last week’s recreation of the opening scene from ‘The End’, the series very first episode, was the biggest one to date – but this week’s edition; Skipper, the series finale, is set to take it even further.

    Arnold Rimmer (Chris Barrie) falls into his annual depression when reading an old report the Captain made on him. Reminded of all his failures he laments on the fact he wanted to make so much more of himself in life – and death. Soon he yearns for a chance to make amends. We’ve all been there.

    Soon the opportunity arrives when Kryten (Robert Llewellyn) presents the Hologram with a dimension skipping device that allows him to live his life in other and opposite dimensions allowing him to find the reality where he lives the life he always wanted.

 So, after a (very) quick goodbye Rimmer sets off on an adventure that sees him journey through the shows rich history meeting old friends and other versions of his shipmates.

    Though we are still hoping for something amazing in the anniversary year (Doug Naylor has mentioned a stage show) this comes very close to an anniversary special: the callbacks, the journey and choice Rimmer makes it both nostalgic and looking to the future in a way Doctor Who did in its 50th anniversary year.

    A great closure to the XI and XII series journey that begun in May 2015 that leaves the door wide open for more.
 Happy anniversary Red Dwarf and all who sail her, let’s journey together for many more years to come.

  • COLUMN | The time I fell for my sister’s boyfriend…

    I was 18 and going to be 19 in a few months. The legal age for sexual acts between men at this time was 21.

    Having moved away for 2 years I returned to live at home. My sister was dating a guy I knew by sight but not by name. I knew his last name as his sister was in my class at school but he was a couple of years older. The housing estate we lived on was new and still being developed. The older kids had to go to another school on an established estate as the high school I attended with his sister was not built in time for him to be a pupil.

    He often met his sister from school. I used to see him on his racing bike at the top of the school lane waiting for her. He was a DJ, not in the modern sense. He ran school discos for younger kids around the local area and his dad drove him around. When I got to know him I found out the reason his dad drove him about was because he was epileptic.

    He had a hefty bulge in his patch pocket trousers which perfectly set out his store of goods and a very pert arse. I once saw him cum in our kitchen/diner. My sister was teasing him. I came in through the back door from the garden and his release pumped through his pants and trousers and lay on the material of his upper thigh for me to see. He was not embarrassed.

    My grandfather was away in Spain or Malta with his brother and sister. They did this for 13 weeks every winter. Coming back in time to collect their old age pension. My sister and I with her boyfriend in tow went over to my grandfather’s to move the post and check his home was secure.

    The boyfriend leaned over the fridge door and looked inside. He was so perfectly bent over and the material of his trousers was taut from the stretch. At school as children, we flicked each other’s arses to inflict maximum pain with minimum touch. A quick flick that just grazed the material and the skin using the merest contact with the nail from the fingers could cause the butch-est of lads to squeal and jump. It did with him, he yelped and looked at me in a way that expressed his displeasure.

    At the end of the night (usually around 10 PM) it had become my duty to walk him home. This was a precaution as his epilepsy was not under control and by this time my sister was usually bored with him. As we walked through the houses I suddenly felt a searing pain and realised he had spanked my arse. He looked at me and smiled, telling me he had waited all day to do that. This punishment continued as we walked the 10 minutes to his home.

    At the last but one turn in a darkened alleyway he pushed me up against the fence of a neighbouring property to his parents. I could feel his excitement pressing against me and struggling to be free of the restraints of his underwear and trousers. His face was close up to mine and he leaned in to kiss me. There was the noise of a dog sniffing against the fences and then relieving itself and a nearby resident moved into view. We stood silently moving apart from each other and the moment had passed.

    I walked him to his door. He asked me to come over in the morning. Telling me he would be up from 8.30, by this time his dad would have already left for work. I could watch out for his mom to leave and then knock.

    The owner of Gay Times Magazine has suspended the new Editor, just weeks after he was installed in the post after antisemitic, homophobic, body shaming and anti-Asian tweets were discovered.

    Josh Rivers, the new editor of Gay Times has been suspended following the discovery by Buzzfeed, of antisemitic, lesbian hating, body shaming and anti-Asian tweets in his Twitter timeline.

    The majority of tweets, were published between 2010 and 2015, the antisemitic Tweet read,

    “I wonder if they cast that guy as “The Jew” because of that f**king ridiculously large honker of a nose. it must be a prosthetic. Must be”.

    Rivers who was working on a mandate of promoting inclusivity and diversity at the magazine has a number of incendiary comments on his Twitter account between 2010 and 2015. Some of the tweets which have been deleted described Jews as “gross” and some directed hatred towards lesbians, overweight women and men, and Asian and Chinese people.

    Previously Josh had been a marketing exec at the company.

    In a post published on Twitter, Rivers wrote, that he was “sorry”.

     

    The magazine released a statement, which said that Rivers’ past tweets did not “align with the values of Gay Times”.

    This week a reader who has symptomless herpes asks whether he should tell new sexual partners that he has been diagnosed with herpes.

    “I was tested positive for herpes. I have not have any symptoms besides two blisters as a first outbreak and one more blister 5 months after that. The doctor said as long as I don’t have an outbreak I won’t pass it on to someone.

    “My confusion and embarrassment comes from: If I don’t have an outbreak (so I can’t pass it on theoretically), is it wrong not to let future sexual partners know? If not informing them would be wrong, why would this be the case?”

    Did you know you were interacting with someone who had herpes when you contracted it? As a matter of conscience would it be fair for you to pass it on and someone else also have to deal with this dilemma too?

    If the relationships engaged in are more than casual, the dynamic of this situation changes as the sexual component and minimum risk you pose is offset by everything else you have to offer.

    In any relationship honesty is a cornerstone. Therefore I would say you should tell someone who could be at risk, so they could make an informed decision.

    An aspect of it is about the respect you have for someone else and your own self-respect. It’s a conscience/morality question.

    When I was a young man I couldn’t think straight if I had sex on my mind. This may sound flippant but I promise you it’s not. If the problem is sexually driven; have a wank and then ask yourself again!

    Disclosure is a common concern for people diagnosed with a communicable infection, he shouldn’t feel alone or too lost in that because a lot of these people are also looking for a way forward with some already having done so and willing to share their experiences.

    Joining a group, even if it is an online forum, that helps people diagnosed with herpes will let him see how people who have been diagnosed long-term handle this and other situations.

    Never underestimate the power of the condom.

    Even if you don’t have visible signs, you might still be contagious.

    If you’re worried then make sure you’ve always got a fresh supply of condoms and don’t engage in unprotected sex – oral or anal.

    As for a long-term partner, then it’s up to you when to fess up, but you will have to at some point. That might be the first time you have an outbreak, but if that doesn’t come until years into your relationship, it could cause quite a bit of concern to your partner that you didn’t speak up about it earlier in your relationship and might cause serious concerns for them about trusting you.

    However, there’s a strong likelihood that he’ll probably have a form of the herpes virus too. A recent study, by WHO, found that globally over 66 per cent of people under 50 have it. There are two types of herpes simplex virus HSV – type 1 (oral – think cold sores) and type 2 genital herpes, both are contagious.

    Having an open a frank conversation about sexual health between you and your partner is a good thing to do, communication, as they say, is the key.

    The NHS suggests that you continue to use condoms, even after the symptoms have gone.

  • Australia says YES to gay marriage

    The people of Austraila has voted – and the resounding answer is yes to marriage between same-sex couples.

    The vote, which was non-binding, showed that 61.6% of people voted in favour of allowing same-sex couples to wed, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said.

    However, as the vote is non-binding it will have to be debated by politicians before becoming law. The Country’s Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull said that he was aiming pass the legislation in Parliament by Christmas.

    He said, “[Australians] have spoken in their millions and they have voted overwhelmingly yes for marriage equality,

    “They voted yes for fairness, yes for commitment, yes for love.”

    In neighbouring New Zealand, gay marriage was legalised in 2013, it was the 13th country in the world to allow marriage between two people of the same sex.

    CONGRATULATIONS

    Numerous stars and high profile organisations reacted to the news by praising Australia for their choice. Leading the congratulatory messages was gay icon, Kylie Minogue, who has long advocated for same-sex marriage.

    Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau tweeted,

    The Sydney Opera house even got into the conversation by Tweeting a rainbow-lit version of their famous landmark.
