Rupert Everett charts the changes in gay life and culture over the last fifty years, from men in their eighties who cottaged with palace guards, to young transgender people coming out as the ‘only trans in the village’ in rural Britain.  Since 1967 much has been achieved in terms of openness and acceptance, but have some of the things that Rupert most wants to celebrate about gay culture – its rebelliousness and outsiderness, for example – faded in the process of assimilation into the mainstream?

Epidemic (w/t) This landmark film tells the uplifting story of how an unlikely coalition of Tory politicians, pioneering doctors and gay men came together to fight a deadly disease with no cure – and how Britain was changed forever by the battle against AIDS in the 1980s.  Together they overcame a homophobic press, the ignorance of the medical establishment, and the outright hostility of Margaret Thatcher, in order to create a campaign that would change hearts and minds about AIDS – and gay men.  Not only did their effort stem the tide of the AIDS plague – but by making us talk publicly about sex in a new way, they helped to create a more liberal Britain – that has lasted until today.

  • Milo reckons he has $12 million investment for new media venture

Milo Yiannopoulos has revealed that he raised $12 million (£9.2 million) in investment for a new media business.

The outspoken commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has revealed that he’s managed to secure over £9 million in investment for a new media venture, which will include books, tours and TV shows.

In a statement released on Instagram, the former Breitbart writer said that he had formed a new media company, called MILO inc, and said that the venture had attracted $12 million in investment. The funding has come from undisclosed investors.

The new company will employ 30 people including a “seasoned media exec” who will lead the company from its Miami base.

Speaking about the venture, Milo said,

“This isn’t some vanity nameplate on a personal blog. This is a fully tooled-up talent factory and management company dedicated to the destruction of political correctness and the progressive left.

“I will spend every waking moment of the rest of my life making the lives of journalists, professors, politicians, feminists, Black Lives Matter activists and other professional victims a living hell.

“Free speech is back — and it is fabulous.”

Earlier in the year, Milo was at the centre of a controversy when a video emerged of him allegedly talking about men having sex with underage boys. The following fallout saw the writer resigning from Breitbart and his book deal with Simon Schuster fell through.

Speaking at the time he said,

“I do not advocate for illegal behavior. I explicitly say on the tapes that I think the current age of consent is ‘about right’.”

“I do not believe sex with 13-year-olds is okay. When I mentioned the number 13, I was talking about the age I lost my own virginity.

“I shouldn’t have used the word “boy” — which gay men often do to describe young men of consenting age — instead of “young man.” That was an error.”

A short while he stated that he thought, after a few months that the controversy would be a “distant memory”.

Another publisher is reportedly ready to publish his book, Dangerous.

MP Andrew Turner who has represented the Isle of Wight for 16 years has resigned after reports emerged that he said he thought it was “wrong” to be gay, and that he thought that it was “dangerous for society”. He allegedly made the comments to sixth form students at the Christ The King College in Newport.

The outburst happened after Mr Turner was asked if he’d be involved with the annual Isle of Wight pride festival. Turner allegedly revealed that he had been invited but would not attend.

A student at the Sixth Form, Esther Poucher wrote on on Facebook,

“He told us that he’d been invited, but wasn’t intending to go. This is because (and this is a direct quote) he thinks that homosexuality is ‘wrong’ and ‘dangerous to society.

“It’s terrifying that in this age and point in our development as a society, there are still people that can’t care enough about a person’s wellbeing to just accept who they are.

“And the most terrifying thing is that we as an island consistently vote him in to represent us. Well f*ck that. HE DOES NOT REPRESENT ME.”

    She added,

“If there is anything I can give to you from this, it is that we need change.

“We can’t wait, and we can’t just nod politely and respect and opinion like that.

“Yes, we all believe different things, and that’s wonderful. But when that belief treats a group as sub-human, and attempts to take away their fundamental rights, we can’t respect it.”

The candidate was due to attend a meeting on Friday morning to re-select him to stand as the Tory candidate in the forthcoming election. The meeting was postponed. Shortly after it was announced that he was stepping down and his decision to do so had nothing to do with the allegations.

The MP, according to TheyWorkForYou.com has almost consistently voted against gay and LGBT+ rights. In 2003 he voted to keep Section 28, in 2004 he voted no on Civil Partnerships and voted against same-sex marriage in 2013.

The MP said it had been his “privilege to serve the people of the Isle of Wight” but said that it was time for a “new generation” to take the mantle and represent the constituents of the Isle Of Wight.

  • THEATRE REVIEW | To Sir, With Love, The Birmingham Rep

★★★★ – What theatre is all about!

Adapted by Ayub Khan-din for Birmingham, To Sir, With Love had its natural charm and appeal to the audience of The Rep. The local, ‘banterous’ fun was well appreciated and received for many laughs were heard in the auditorium. What also impressed me, and I found highly commendable, was the extent to which The Birmingham Rep invested their efforts into nurturing young, new and home-grown talent via The Young Rep Company.

Every young person shone and were utterly convincing in the roles they played, conveying a variety of emotions with much maturity. Charlie Mills who played Denham, stood out for his aggressive demeanour at the start, and the 360 degree turn at the end. His transition from delinquent to amicable was very warming to witness. Alice McGowan portraying Pamela performed with delicateness but fierceness too and, though her part was smaller, Alice really invested her time to move elegantly and speak with natural flair in-line with the character’s traits. Eden Peppercorn, who played Monica, did really well in contributing to the chaos and challenge of Mr Braithwaite’s initial classes. Her subtle change of heart was well developed and endearing too. Phillip Morris, local actor who trained at Birmingham School of Acting, did a sterling job, to the point of gripping the audience all the way through while fully harnessing the moments and challenges in which his character found himself in. Phillip Morris was a star of the play, and I believe this opportunity granted by The Rep will no doubt further his career in the theatre industry.

I really loved the thorny fun had between the characters of Mr Weston and Clinty, played by Matt Crosby and Polly Lister respectively. Polly really embodied the locality of the adaption through her West Midlands accent, and she was much joyful to watch, with exquisite comedic timing. Matt was a treat to watch too, and he must have channelled a teacher he knew, because his portrayal of Mr West really made me, and I’m sure others, reminisce, not very fondly, teachers from our pasts; or for those in the profession, education staff would probably relate too.

Plays are instrumental to teach people their own history. To Sir, With Love did just that. It gave us flavours of the past mixed with contemporary seasoning. It was a feast to be lapped up! Using young talent really made the production special and very memorable, and I hope to see the young actors on stage again soon, as they so deserve it!

    Running until 6 May.

  • Greens set to launch their gay rights manifesto in a CHURCH

In what’s being described as setting a “clear distance” between itself and the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party is launching its LGBT+ manifesto in a church.

    • The Green party has said it will commit to supporting LGBT+ asylum seekers.

    • Co-leader of the Greens Jonathan Bartley, said they were the party to ‘always stand up for LGBTIQA+ people’

    • The party has the only openly trans spokesperson in UK politics.

    GPLGBTIQA+GroupShot2
The Green party is vying for LGBT+ support today after it revealed that it would set out its LGBT+ manifesto in a London Church, a move it says which separates it from the Liberal Democrats. The launch is to take place at The Trinity United Reform Church in Camden, well-known for its progressive views and inclusivity.

Jonathan Bartley, co-leader of the Green Party, said,

“The Green Party has a proud history of leading the way when it comes to LGBTIQA+ rights. While other political parties struggle to say what they believe, Greens are clear – we will always stand up for LGBTIQA+ people.

“We believe in a fairer world, a more equal economy, human rights protected by law, recognition and representation for all gender identities and education and health services which care for and include everyone.”

Last week, the Liberal Democrat leader, Tim Farron was criticised after initially failing to answer questions on whether he thought, as a committed Christian, if “gay sex” was a sin. He was asked numerous times by Channel 4’s Cathy Newman, 11 times by an LBC reporter and once in the House of Commons. He finally revealed that he didn’t think it was a sin by saying in a BBC interview,

“I don’t believe that gay sex is a sin.

“I take the view though, that as a political leader, my job is not to pontificate on theological matters.

Aimee Challenor, Green Party LGBTIQA+ spokesperson, who is the only openly trans spokesperson of a UK Political Party, said,

“Let’s be clear, LGBTIQA+ rights are under threat. From Gay and Bi men being tortured and killed in Chechnya, to Donald Trump weakening protections in the US and the UK’s threat to repeal the Human Rights Act, 2017 has already been a concerning year for everyone who cares about LGBTIQA+ people.

“The Green Party is proud to stand against the erosion of LGBITQA+ rights and launch a manifesto which proudly fights for bodily autonomy for intersex people, legal recognition for trans and non-binary people, for PrEP for all that need it, and for greater protection for LGBTIQA+ asylum seekers – and more.”

She’s not subtle and knows how to plug her products. We’ll give her that.

Caitlyn Jenner stood outside the White House to demand that Donald Trump read her book, suggesting that he might learn something.

Holding up a copy of her new book, in front of the White House, the Olympic turned reality TV star hinted that Donald would learn something if he read a copy.

It’s not known if Caitlyn dropped off a copy, but she did say that once he was done with it, Donald should give it to Jeff Sessions, the 84th Attorney General of the USA.

Jeff Sessions is considered to be one of the most conservative members of the US senate who has achieved a ZERO rating by the Human Rights Campaign.

Caitlyn’s book Secrets Of My Life has just been published. Speaking about the books she said, “Living authentically really is a wonderful thing”.

  • INTERVIEW | Ray Houghton

Meet Ray. He’s nearly 60 and he’s got pure fitness game. In fact’s he’s a celebrity personal trainer and he’s here to show you regardless of your age you can have the body you want.

It’s clear that you take good care of your body… what motivates you to do this?
The ageing process motivates me to take good care of my body. I want to do all I can to live a long and active life and to remain independent and fulfilled. Sure, Vanity is a big part too! I will be 60 in November and I look at other people, many half my age, and most are overweight, have joint problems or are stressed. I will do everything I can to remain agile, flexible, strong & healthy and happy. I was born to be different, to stand out in a crowd and to inspire others.

When did you start? Have you always been a keen gym goer?
Fitness became a big part of my life from about the age of 12, in the way of home gym equipment. But I started proper gym training from the age of 16. I had joined the Boy’s Junior Army Service and therefore gym training was available and I loved it. I was never an academic at school, I wanted to do physical things instead: Braun not Brains! When I first moved to Spain from Manchester UK, I had a 12-year gap from Body Building and that is the only time you didn’t see me in a Gym. The Gym is my life and I love it.

What do you say to people who say that the body goes downhill after the age of 35?
People say that after the age of 35, the body goes down hill… well, yes it does, due to the natural ageing process, our bodies stop producing the Human Growth Hormone (HGH). And eating habits have changed over the years, fast foods instead of natural produce. Alcohol is cheap and has become a normal social activity. Stress is a huge problem and all these things accumulate in aiding us to get old quicker. Weight Training is essential, especially as we age. We must work our bodies to do even the simplest things in life such as climbing stairs, carrying shopping, manoeuvring in & out of the bath…the list goes on. Education in Life Fitness is key and this is one area I feel I am qualified to address. How do celebrities stay looking so young and energetic? Google: Celebrities taking HGH and click on images, you’ll be amazed at who you see!

You’ve said that quite a few of your admirers are gay guys? How do you feel about this?
Many of my admirers are indeed gay guys. I really don’t mind at all. In fact, I am flattered! There are not many muscular guys around, especially at my age. ‘Super Hero’ movies are very popular at present… I can be a fantasy in their mind? I respect anyone’s sexual preference.

Are you in demand for more exposing photoshoots? Would you do any?
Yes, I get asked for exposing photos and yes, I wish to do another professional photo shoot. I would love to do more photo’s ‘on location’ (outdoor shots) and also using different props to show more of my character and sense of humour. I would like to fill my potential as a ‘Celebrity’ and if it gives pleasure and inspires, then it is all good.

Tell us something that surprises people when they learn it about you…
People are surprised to learn that I am indeed aged 59. I have a muscular physique, good skin, a young outlook on life, I like to dress in my own unique style. I am an optimist and very positive. I am a quiet man, somewhat shy at times BUT I can come out with some life stories that surprise people. Also when I say I have a FULL BODY SUIT of Tattoo’s, people are shocked. I have a wealth of body building/fitness knowledge – all simple common sense stuff and people (many of them Personal Trainers) love to learn from me, The Master.

What are your top workout songs?
I don’t workout to music (I never use headphones). I only listen to one important thing….MY BODY! I have such a Mind/Body connection, that all background noise (songs), simply disappear. However, there is music playing in my gym, mainly 70’s & 80’s music, which I like. My favourite songs are ‘Kinky Boots’ by Nancy Sinatra, ‘Money Talks (Dirty Cash)’ by Stevie V, ‘Perfect’ by Fairground Attraction, ‘Feeling Good’ by Nina Simone.

    Ray Houghton

How many days do you work out – and what’s your general routine?
I workout six days a week. I usually concentrate on training one body part per day: Back, Biceps, Legs, Shoulders, Chest, Triceps. I like to do Body Weight Training: Push Ups, Pull Ups, Tricep Dips etc. I don’t use heavy weights, instead, I concentrate on keeping good form throughout the exercise and higher reps too. I have always been injury free (which is virtually unheard of with most body builders), due to keeping good technique. The only Cardio I do is walking my 3 dogs daily.
