  • So who gets the armrests on a plane?

It’s an age old question. Who should get to use the armrests on a flight?

So who gets the armrests on a plane?

Flying for any longer than an hour and you’ll most probably start feeling like a battery hen. If you happen to be on a plane that has its seating three abreast – so most short haul flights, or long haul flights that use the 747, 777, 787 or A380, there’s alway that tricky, non-verbal struggle for the armrests, especially if you’re in the middle.

So one Quora user has laid out the (unwritten, but totally sensible) law. The law entitles the middle seat user to have access to the two inside armrests. Well because…

“The window seat is entitled to a head-rest and to have a priority view of the outside world, obviously. This seat is great for long flights, since you can go to sleep by tucking up a pillow in the corner and looking over the clouds. That person is entitled to that.

The aisle seat is entitled to a little bit more legroom than normal, the quickest allowed to get to the flight attendants’ attention and the easiest route to the bathroom. NEWS FLASH, if you know you need the restroom/toilet a lot while travelling, you should probably go here for the convenience of the other two people travelling on your row. That person is entitled to that.

Now we go onto the middle seat. Now honestly, I hate sitting in the middle seat, it probably has the least benefits and you’re being squashed in between two people. HOWEVER, it is by my and many others’ moral code that the middle seat is obligated to have priority of the armrests. If you are window seat or aisle seat, the armrests in the middle are morally owned by the person sitting in the middle. They don’t have head or leg room, they can’t tuck away a pillow, they’re most likely being squashed and they still have the inconvenience of squeezing past someone to go to the bathroom, so the damn least they could get is the two armrests in the middle. That person is entitled to that.

It just had to be said.

There you have it. Middle gets arm space.

  • 10 things you know as a gay guy in your 30s

Shock horror younglings, gay men in their 30s do exist, I am one of them. And here is my helpful tongue in cheek guide to traversing the minefield of being classed as over the hill by anyone who’s under 25.

    1. It creeps up on you faster than you think.

    http://gph.is/1UkkJdN

When I was but a wee gay nipper myself back In the early 2000s I never thought 30 would happen. But time marches on, and suddenly I was 30 before I knew it. There’s only 52 Saturday nights to be had in a year, and those goes shockingly quickly. In just a few short years, you too will be a bitter old queen writing articles about how to cope being in your 30s.

    2. Beauty fades, dumb is forever

    http://gph.is/XLjZ6y
Here’s a tip for you, you aren’t going stay looking the same for the rest of your life, and let’s face it, getting surgery or fillers will make you end up looking like a permanently shocked shop mannequin, or Madonna. So for the love of god, please teach yourself some skills that don’t involve how to get into a pair of skinny jeans.

    3. You WILL lose those luscious locks.

    http://gph.is/29Fls7m

I still feel a slight pang of jealousy towards the young gays who can have any hairstyle and colour they want, I used to do it myself, but these days I’ve only got 12 hairs, and three of them are my husbands. But there is a high chance that by your 30s you too will either be bald, or balding. So make the most of your hair while you have it, but once you start losing it, shave that stuff off and grow a beard, or invest in some really ridiculous wigs.

    4. You have to become fabulous

    http://gph.is/2jI8mip

In order to stay relevant on the gay scene, you will have to become hilarious and fabulous. One liners will have to actually be witty, and you need them to distract from your gnarled old face and rapidly vanishing hairline, you will have to become a talking point but luckily, by your 30s you should have met a group of people who put up with your crazy notions of “good music” and who will sit with you and judge everyone else.

    5. Nightclubs will become a chore

    http://gph.is/15CoNhx

Not only do hangovers last a lot longer, attempting a death drop could result in breaking a hip, and you’ll also find yourself resenting the fact that you can no longer tell when one song ends and another begins. You also don’t want to have to deal with the drama that young gays manage to get themselves into. While in your youth you could cope with the crying friend, the horny friend and the throwing up friend all in one night, once you’re past 30, most of the time your find the expression “oh for f***s sake, what now?” will become a staple of your vocabulary when dealing with the 18 year olds.

    6. It becomes a lot harder to maintain your figure.

    http://gph.is/2d1Xjvo

That skinny twink body of yours you so love, yep that’ll go the way of your hairline once you get past 25, and it becomes a lot harder to maintain it without taking out a pact with the devil. That whole pizza and cheesy chips you managed to cram down after a night out, will now stay on your hips unless you run a marathon or rig up a home liposuction device using a funnel, a hose and a Dyson.

    7. Hookups in their 40s become a viable option.

    http://gph.is/2ghqsDE

When you’re 20, the idea of hooking up with a guy in his 40s might seem like a terrible idea unless he’s rich, has a heart condition and you really like loud indoor fireworks. But in your 30s you realise a guy of 40, could only be 5 years older than you and they are the only ones paying you attention on Grindr anymore.

8 And on the subject of hookups…

    http://gph.is/2lMWs3s

In one’s youth, you can be ready for a hookup at the snap of a finger and with pretty much anyone. you’d meet a guy in the club, go back to his place and be careful not to wake up his parents. Even an invitation of “can you meet now?” on Grindr is ok, because you know your feet won’t ache if you walk a mile. Past 30, if someone were to ask “meet now?” You’d have to think about whether you can be bothered to travel that far and whether it’s worth having to have another shower for what could potentially be a lacklustre blowjob.

    9. Popularity isn’t everything

    http://gph.is/1SGkont

The wisdom of old age makes you understand popularity doesn’t mean a goddamn thing if the people who hang around with you wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire, they’d most likely Snapchat it and try to go viral, so they too can become a vapid attention seeking whore. But fear not young gay, by your 30s the people who have stuck around are the ones who will have your back and most likely be able to provide bail money.

    10. You can still have a f**king good time

    http://gph.is/1uaonYi

It’s not all doom and gloom, by your 30s you’ll have found yourself, and find the whole idea of the gay scene infinitely amusing and you can appreciate it a lot more. You’ll have met so many different types of people that hardly anything will be a surprise, but you’ll have enough experience not to care. You’ve loved and learned and become a better person for it, so strap on your safety belts, it’s still a hell of a ride.

  • Whoops… Did someone leak Will Young’s d**k pic?

It seems as though Will Young’s d**k pics are out there – like he said, and someone might have just posted them.

    Will Young dick picture

The singer only last week was saying that he was surprised that nobody had leaked his penis pics, in fact he said he was “amazed” that the pictures hadn’t surfaced considering how many people he had sent them to.

In less than 48 hours after he made the comment, the picture, which purports to be of the singer’s erect penis was uploaded.

The singer rose to fame in 2000 after winning the first ever Pop Idol UK. He came out shortly after his win with a huge front page splash on the front of The News Of The World.

The star has yet to comment on whether the picture is his or not.

  • Russian LGBT activists round up by police as they demonstrated against persecution of gay men in Chechnya

LGBT activists have been round up by Russian police after they demonstrated against the persecution of gay and bisexual men Chechnya.

Around 10 gay-rights activists demonstrated in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city,  in solidarity with the gay men who have been detained, tortured and killed in the Russian republic of Chechnya. Police officers, dressed in riot gear, arrested the activists and dragged them to waiting police vans.

Images circulated on Twitter showed a number of protesters lying on the ground with fake blood smeared on their faces and their bodies draped with the rainbow and Chechnya flags.

    See images here

Since the 1st April, horrific reports have been reported about the rounding up, torture and the alleged killing of at least four men suspected of being gay. They are apparently being held in around six camps. A number of men have been let go.

  • THE BIG GAY ELECTION | Weekly Roundup, Gay sex abound

I know this was meant to be the “Brexit election,” but there have been more politicians talking about gay sex over the past two weeks than on Westminster Grindr.

This election is quickly shaping up to be the gayest election in living memory – the Big Gay Election if you will. My goal over the coming weeks is, to sum up, the electoral week in gay, highlighting stories and candidates pertinent to the LGBT community with insight, clarity, and hopefully a little humour.

Jumping right in, the major story of the week was, of course, Tim Farron – the inexplicable Leader of the Liberal Democrats – refusing to answer unequivocally that gay sex isn’t a sin. Whilst this may seem odd for someone who was in a failed 1980s version of Steps, Farron is a committed evangelical Christian whose nuanced views on faith and sexuality have widely (though many would argue unfairly) raised eyebrows about his commitment to equality. Appearing on ITV’s Peston on Sunday on 23 April, Farron doubled-down on his whole “we’re all sinners” spiel – which, while from a Christian perspective, is technically true, didn’t really answer the question.

No worries, though. Sensing the political storm wasn’t about to abate anytime soon – and, I imagine, that he’d never again be able to attend “Kylie: A Celebration” at the Strangers’ Bar – last Tuesday he finally cleared the air. In an interview with the BBC’s Eleanor Garnier, Farron stated unequivocally “I don’t believe gay sex is a sin.” It took him, like, some two weeks to figure out how to string those words into a cohesive sentence, but he got there in the end. It took Prime Minister Theresa May, another committed Christian, decidedly less time. She was asked by Andrew Marr on Sunday whether she thought gay sex is a sin. “No,” she simply responded. Simple and concise, unlike her Brexit plan.

But hey, you there, the bloke reading from LGBT Tory – wipe that smug smile off your face. It wasn’t exactly a banner week for your party either. Isle of Wight Conservative MP Andrew Turner resigned – according to PinkNews “before he was pushed” – after allegedly telling a group of teenage LGBT activists that he wouldn’t be going to Pride because he thinks homosexuality is “wrong” and “dangerous to society,” apparently missing the irony that as a Tory those are the exact words Momentum would use about him. The teens posted on Facebook, the story went viral, and by the end of the week, Turner was gone.

I don’t know if he was about to be asked to sashay away, though I imagine he was. Theresa May runs a ship tighter than Sam Callahan’s… abs. But this shines a light on something the Conservative Party would rather you forget – that their backbenchers are, by and large, no allies of ours. Never forget that the majority of Tory backbenchers voted against equal marriage and that the Prime Minister herself, back when she was Home Secretary, wanted to repeal the Human Rights Act. The extreme Eurosceptic wing of the Conservatives would take Britain out of the European Convention on Human Rights, which has underpinned much of the equality victories British gays have won over the past 25 years.

As for Labour, well, they’ve been largely silent on gay issues this week (unless lambasting Tim Farron for his no-gay-sex scandal). Jeremy Corbyn did read a letter from a gay couple at the last Prime Minister’s Questions of this Parliament on Wednesday, though. Christopher, Corbyn says, wrote that “for the last five years, my husband has had only a one percent increase in his wages. The cost of living has risen each year. We now have at least 15 percent less buying power than then.”

The thing about Corbyn’s letters from constituents (a hallmark of his at PMQs) is that they’re impossible to corroborate, so I don’t know any specifics about Christopher’s and his Mister’s circumstances. However, it does raise one thing that we should keep in mind: gay and bisexual men are more likely to experience poverty than straight men, and lesbians are at least as likely to experience poverty as women. Economic inequality is linked to LGBT inequality, so as you cast your ballots next month, bear in mind who is going to do the best to raise the community out of poverty. After all, being fabulous ain’t cheap.

There’s one more issue we should all remember throughout the election cycle, and which deserves no snark: Chechnya. Gay men are being rounded up, tortured, and killed throughout the Russian province. Whoever the next Prime Minister is, we owe it to our Chechen brothers (and indeed, our LGBT siblings throughout the world) to make sure the government is doing everything they can to advocate for and protect the human rights of LGBT people the world over.

We’ve got five weeks left before the vote, so undoubtedly there’s going to be quite a bit more to roll our eyes, scoff, and groan at. In the meantime, watch this space. THEGAYUK has some great election coverage coming up.
Until next week – happy campaigning!

  • FILM REVIEW | Unhung Hero

    ★★★★★ | Unhung Hero

When Patrick Moote proposed to his girlfriend on camera at a baseball game the video of her brusque rejection went viral on YouTube within days.

It wasn’t the fact that he had been so unceremoniously dumped in public that upset him, it was the reason she gave for her refusal. It really hit poor humiliated Patrick below the belt when she told him it was just because his penis was too small. It’s the nightmare scenario that every man, straight or gay, lives in fear of. Our genitals are after all, how we measure our manhood.

Patrick, despite earning his living as a stand up comic in New York, didn’t find his predicament funny in the least but it did empower him to embark on a quest to discover how small is small, and what could possibly be done to make his member more memorable. Full credit for him for going so public on an issue that most men would totally shirk away from, and he started his journey by going back and re-visiting old girlfriends to get their take on his love tool.

They only confirmed the opinions of what medical professionals he later consulted, diagnosed as a ‘smaller than average’ penis. Patrick bared his soul (not body though) to total strangers to get a pop vox on their take on what stigma this ‘affliction’ would mean to them. And in an awkward conversation, his embarrassed father admitted that it was probably a hereditary condition anyway.

Now Patrick decided to visit any corner of the world where there may be a solution to his dilemma. His trips to Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Papua New Guinea were both funny and stressful as poor Patrick witnessed all the bizarre treatments that seemed to result in no more inches but a great deal of pain. Our hearts are in our mouths as he tried lifting weights by his testicles and also when he is on the verge of actually injecting some dodgy looking serum into his balls. Ouch!

The documentary of Patrick’s search is nothing less than a sheer delight: mainly because he has this endearing quality of naiveté and unfiltered honesty publicly exposing himself on a topic most men would never ever dream of even mentioning to their closest friends. It ends up being so much more than the size of his phallus but the importance of Patrick being comfortable with who he really is. It was a brave undertaking and one that was so worth sharing, especially as it ended on such a high note.

  • 10 Things That Could Void Your Travel Insurance, just what will they pay for?

With at least two “cover-all” opt-outs for insurance companies, just what are you paying Travel insurance for? Here are 10 reasons to pay more attention to the travel insurance small print

Excessive alcohol consumption, failure to take recommended inoculations, reckless or illegal behaviour and travel paid for using loyalty schemes could all cost you dear

Gocompare.com Travel Insurance is warning people to read the conditions and exclusions in travel insurance small print to ensure that they buy the right cover at the right price and don’t unwittingly invalidate their cover.

Exclusions and conditions vary between policies but common ones include claims made as a result of excessive alcohol consumption, fighting (except in self-defence) and taking part in activities insurers deem ‘hazardous’ such as jet skiing, quad biking or diving.

    Common conditions and exclusions

    1 Pre-existing medical conditions

Failure to disclose an existing medical condition (including mental, nervous or emotional disorders).

2 Preventable or avoidable medical treatment/conditions

Failure to take prescribed medication or travelling against medical advice. Claims resulting from a tropical disease where the recommended inoculations and/or recommended medication for the country visited have not been taken; self-inflicted injuries; treatment for sexually transmitted diseases.

3 Claims arising as a result of ‘excessive alcohol consumption’

A common ‘catch-all’ – incidents occurring after you’ve consumed ‘an excessive amount’ of alcohol; claims arising from alcohol or drug abuse or solvent abuse.

    4 Sports, adventurous activities

Standard policies typically exclude winter sports, jet skiing, bungee jumping, quad biking, rugby, paragliding, martial arts, cycling touring, diving (solo or beyond a certain depth), riding mopeds or motorcycles. Competitive and professional activities are excluded.

Where an activity is covered, you’ll be required to follow any safety precautions and conditions. If you’re planning an adventurous you may need a specialist policy.

    5 Taking reasonable precautions

Another ‘catch-all’ – insurers expect you to take ‘all reasonable precautions to avoid injury, illness, disease, loss, theft or damage and take all reasonable steps to safeguard your property from loss or damage and to recover property lost or stolen’.

6 Reckless or illegal behaviour, including fighting and the unauthorised use of swimming pools

Claims arising from reckless behaviour or from taking unnecessary risks, e.g. ‘you sitting on any balcony railing; jumping from or climbing on or over any balcony railing, ledge or wall, regardless of its height, other than Artificial Wall Climbing listed in the Leisure Activities section’.

Some insurers preclude ‘any claim arising from the unauthorised use of a swimming pool outside the specified times of opening.’

    7 Visiting volatile destinations

Cover for travel to destinations against Foreign & Commonwealth Office and/or World Health Organisation advice. Cover for war, civil commotion and terrorism. Last year the FCO warned LGBT visitors that visiting Russia could be potentially problematic given the Country’s anti-gay law.

8 Travel paid for using loyalty schemes or points

Some policies exclude ‘any claim for unused travel or accommodation arranged by using air miles, loyalty or points based ownership schemes, timeshares or similar promotions; management fees, maintenance costs or exchange fees associated with loyalty or points based ownership schemes, timeshares or similar promotions’.

    9 Visas and other documents

Failing to get the visa or other documentation you require to visit your chosen destination.

10 Work: paid, unpaid and voluntary

Undertaking paid or unpaid manual work or physical labour of any kind. If you’re planning to work abroad, including voluntary charity work or you are undertaking a business trip, then you will need to choose a policy which specifically covers these activities.

“Travel insurance is designed to protect you against the unforeseen, not careless or reckless behaviour. Insurers generally require you to take reasonable care of yourself to guard against injury and illness and to safeguard your belongings from loss or damage. So, for example, you won’t be able to claim for a stolen wallet or iPhone left under your towel while you went for a swim in the hotel pool or claim back the cost of medical treatment you needed as a result of injuries sustained from a fall while drunk. Likewise, insurers are unlikely to pick up the bill for medical treatment for a tropical disease where you’ve not had the recommended vaccinations or completed any recommended course of medication a course of anti-malarial tablets for the country you are visiting.” Caroline Lloyd from Gocompare.com Travel Insurance commented, “When you buy travel insurance, take the time to read the small print, rather than waiting until you need to make a claim and finding out, too late, that you’re not covered. The policy wording will also contain details of the procedures and paperwork, such as police or medical reports, and helpline numbers which may be required to make a valid claim, so don’t forget to take a copy with you.”

“Medical cover is one of the most important elements of travel insurance because treatment abroad can run into thousands of pounds. So, on the application, be honest about your health – particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition, even if it’s mild and under control. If, while on holiday, you suffer a related illness without declaring an existing condition or any referrals or investigations you have received, there’s a good chance your claim will be rejected. While some insurers specifically exclude pre-existing conditions, there are specialist insurers who will cover you for even the most serious illnesses.

“Another common area of exclusions and conditions relates to activities which insurers consider adventurous or hazardous. These include a range of things from taking part in winter sports, jet skiing, bungee jumping, quad biking to riding mopeds or motorcycles. So, if you like a bit of a holiday adventure, you’ll need to make sure that all the things you want to do are covered and follow any required safety precautions and conditions outlined in the small print. Insurers do update these lists from time to time, so if you are worried about a specific activity our advice would be to contact your insurer directly.”

  • RECIPE | Spiced Whole Roasted Cauliflower

    Serves 2
    Prep 10 mins
Cook 40-60 mins (dependant on the size of your cauliflower)

The marinade for the roasted cauliflower is buzzing with Indian twangs; turmeric, cumin, curry powder, and lime fuse together to create some serious zing, which is then mellowed down by the natural yoghurt. This is a lovely, unusual side-dish to serve as part of an Indian themed meal. It also looks rather pretty. I like to serve the leftover marinade alongside the dish.

The marinade will keep in the fridge in an air-tight container for a few days which I then use as a dip for vegetable sticks, or you could also marinade some chicken breast pieces and skewer, placing under the grill until cooked through, for an Eastern style kebab. I like serving this side with my Lamb & Lentils, and a plain salad of vine tomatoes and cucumber.

CAULIFLOWER: This vegetable remained rather underrated for some time, but with 100g of cauliflower equating to 80% of your vitamin C intake, some are crowning cauliflower as the new kale. (SOURCE: http://www.nutrition-and-you.com/cauliflower.html ) Its popularity is probably at its peak when it is smothered in a cheese sauce alongside a Sunday roast. Cauliflower is also a good source of B-complex vitamins which are required for essential bodily functions, such as energy production. Cauliflower contains sulforaphane, a compound which has had results in killing cancer stem cells. (SOURCE; http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2014/02/22/cauliflower-health-benefits.aspx)

TURMERIC: There has been much press coverage around turmeric and it’s benefits of late. Turmeric can rapidly increase the antioxidant capacity in your body. Turmeric contains curcumin which has been linked to prevention and possible treatment of cancer.

In fact, research shows that the turmeric and cauliflower combination may help and treat prostate cancer. (SOURCE; http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2014/02/22/cauliflower-health-benefits.aspx )

LOW-FAT NATURAL YOGHURT: Yoghurt contains all nine essential amino acids, and is a good source of protein. Probiotics in yoghurt have a good influence on our immune system by promoting the activity of white blood cells. In the September 2012 edition of the, “European Journal of Cancer Prevention”, it was published that the volunteers who participated that consumed yoghurt regularly had up to a one-third less risk of developing upper digestive tract cancers. (SOURCE: http://healthyeating.sfgate.com/benefits-natural-yogurt-6915.html )

    Ingredients.
1 cauliflower, outer leaves and root removed, washed
    400ml low-fat natural yoghurt
    1 tbsp olive oil
    1 lime, zested & juiced
    1 tbsp turmeric
    1 tbsp mild curry powder
    1 tsp cumin
    1 tsp pepper
    ½ tsp salt

    Method.
    Preheat your oven to 200c / 180c (fan) / Gas Mark 6

    1. Line a baking tray with a piece of foil, and rub the olive oil all over.
    2. Combine the yoghurt, all the spices, and lime zest/juice together.
    3. Brush or smear the cauliflower in the marinade and sit in the baking tray.
    4. Roast in the oven for 40-60 minutes depending on the size of your cauliflower. It should have turned golden and have a crispy outer crust. If time is an issue and your cauliflower isn’t quite as cooked as you’d like it, then place in the microwave for a couple of minutes to soften.

It’s 31 minutes long and takes you on a journey from “Crave” (when you really want it) to masturbation (Satisfied?).  All good stuff TBH and it’s free to listen to on Spotify.
