  • FILM REVIEW | The Secret Life Of Pets

THE SECRET LIVES OF PETS – Is this the best film of the year? A modern animation film with as much appeal for adults as kids – just like Pixar used to be with added heart and more laughs per minute than Mrs Brown’s Boys or Ab Fab.

Nutshell – A group of pets have one hell of a day when their owners are out at work. Centred largely around two dogs that via a chain of events get themselves lost across New York and then fall in with some very bad animals indeed. The rescue is on from another hound in love. He meets, an overweight cat, some birds and a rodent and it is pure happiness from start to finish.

You will laugh in the first thirty seconds and still be splitting your sides 90 minutes later.  Let’s make it simple; this is a classic and a must see. In this depressing Summer. This film is the tonic we all need and then some. Bloody fantastic.

    Time – 90 mins; Certificate – U

Tagline – ‘Ever wonder what your pet’s do all day?’.

THE GAY UK FACTOR – Don’t be sick, if you’re into animals in that way move on now. This is simply the best fun you can have with your clothes on.

Cast – Voice cast of quality rather than pointless star names for the sake of it. Albert Brooks, Kevin Hart, Louis CK, Dana Carvey and Steve Coogan.

Key Player – Cinco Paul, Ken Daurio and Brian Lynch the three writers that give us a fresh, fun, laugh out loud, thrilling and exciting story that all this year’s live-action blockbusters have failed to do.

Budget – $75 Million only opened in a couple of European territories but we expect it to make over $150 million and climbing in a month then there are DVD sales, TV Deals, toy sales and a million other memorabilia marketing possibilities after all this is the team behind the Despicable Me series and look what they did with that Minions brand.

Best Bit – 0.01 mins; Which is when you first realise how good this movie is going to be but we could have picked any of the 90 minutes right through to the superb Bill Withers song climax set piece.

Worst Bit – There isn’t one. There we said it. Maybe if you don’t like snakes, there is a dark sequence in the middle that will leave you squirming.

Little Secret – 2016 will go down as the best year for animation in history ironically in a year that has been largely rubbish for live action. With Zootropolis, Kung Fu Panda, Angry Birds, The Jungle Book, Ice Age and Finding Dory plus more to come all hitting really big the animated Oscar race will be cutthroat we presumed it was a shoe-in for Zootropolis, but now it is probably handing the trophy over to these furry critters.

Movie Mistake – There is never any mistakes in animation just loads of opportunities for fun inserts, and here we have a lot of references to characters from the studios megahit Despicable Me series as well as posters on buses etc. for their forthcoming movie releases like Sing – never miss a chance for a few subliminal advertising guys.

Further Viewing – Monsters Inc, Toy Story 3, Babe, Finding Nemo, Shrek, Zootropolis, The Jungle Book, The Lion King and anything else from Disney/Pixar or Dream Works with four legs.

Any Good – Well Yessss! Hopefully, by now you will have got the message that this is unmissable. If you own a pet of any sort or love animals, then you will get even more out of this. Take your niece, your nephew, the noisy kid from next door but whatever you do go and see the most lovable group of animals since Mowgli set foot in the jungle or Babe learnt how to herd sheep.

Rating – 6/100 (6th out of the last 100 films reviewed with 1 being Gay UK heaven and 100 being pants)

Andrea Leadsom has claimed that she was never happy with the current marriage laws in the UK because of the “hurt caused to many Christians”. The Prime Minister candidate abstained from voting in 2013 when same-sex marriage was being debated in Parliament.

The candidate, who if successful, will become the unelected leader of the UK, called the laws “divisive” and “absurd” in 2013 and maintained in an interview this morning on ITV that marriage was, “a Christian service that was for men and women who wanted to commit in the eyes of God”.

    During her interview Leadsom said,

“I believe the love of same-sex couples is as every bit as valuable that of opposite sex couples – absolutely committed to that. But nevertheless, my own view actually, is that marriage in the biblical sense is very clearly from the many many Christians who wrote to me on this subject – in their opinion – can only be between a man and a woman.”

She said that she would have preferred for civil partnerships to be made available to both gay and heterosexual couples.

    She continued,

“I think we’ve muddled the terms of marriage, civil partnership, church etc. I would have liked that to have been clarified.I didn’t really like the legislation – that was the problem. But I absolutely support gay marriage.”

Donald Trump u-turns on anti gay and trans HB2 bill

The presumptive Republican candidate Donald Trump has now flip flopped on his HB2 stance, insinuating to Fox news that White House directives shouldn’t protect tiny parts of the population and that civil protections should be left to individual states.

It’s the bill that’s divided the nation. Musical legends have boycotted the state because of it, cities have lost hundreds of millions in investment and millions in lost revenues – and now Donald Trump has flip-flopped on his stance – saying that he disagrees that federal laws should support, “such a tiny part of our population”.

HB2 bans all LGBT+ right ordinances in North Carolina.

In March North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed a law which would allow business owners to discriminate against LGBT people on the grounds of religious belief.

The law also requires trans people to use the public toilet that aligns with the gender that is on their birth certificate.

Previously Trump had said that the law was unnecessary, but has seemingly u-turned after President Obama recently issued directives which called upon public schools to allow trans students to use the toilets they were most comfortable using.

    Trump told Fox News,

‘Well, it’s not fine. ‘I would generally speaking leave it to the states to decide. Obama’s getting into a very tricky territory. We have to protect everybody … but this is such a tiny part of our population. I would really leave it up to the states.

  • “Heartless” lesbian couple sentenced to life in prison for murder of two-year-old son

“Heartless” lesbian couple sentenced to life in prison for murder of two-year-old son

A mother and her civil partner given life sentences for the murder of Liam Fox, Rachel’s two-year-old son.

Rachel Fee and her civil partner Nyomi handed life sentences in prison after being found guilty of the murder of Liam Fee, the two-year-old son of Rachel.

The toddler died from blunt force trauma which caused his heart to rupture. The court heard that he also suffered numerous injuries including bone fractures.

Rachel Fee, 31 and Nyomi Fee, 29 denied that they had murdered Liam, but were found guilty after a seven week trial at the High Court in Livingston, Fife, Scotland.

Rachel Fee was sentenced to 23 and a half years in prison and Nyomi Fee was sentenced to 24 years.

Passing sentence judge Lord Burns told the pair that they had, “subjected to a prolonged course of violent behaviour” on Liam.

Prosecutor Alex Prentice QC told the court the women were guilty of “unyielding, heartless cruelty”.

Rachel Fee’s defender Mark Stewart QC maintained that Ms. Fee maintained she was innocent of Liam’s murder whilst Brian McConnachie QC, defending Rachel Fee said that Ms. Fee thought there had been a “miscarriage of justice”.

  • GARDENING | No Garden? No Problem

GARDENING | No Garden? No Problem

Since we moved to the smallholdings in Mid Wales our life has been far from ordinary. For 5 years, Andy and I have learnt incredible things about self-sufficiency, renovating an old cottage and the pleasures of gardening. Along the way we’ve found ourselves part of the most wonderful village community imaginable.

Since opening the shop and café in the middle of the village last year, our lives have steadily moved away from the smallholding and the garden, and our focus has shifted towards the day-to- day running of the shop.

As the shop steadily became busier, the animals, polytunnel and garden received less and less attention. So at the start of the year we decided to embark on our next adventure. In the last couple of months we’ve sold the smallholding and moved in above the shop – a gorgeous building but with no real garden!

From the minute we moved in we’ve been seeking out small spaces and areas to grow plants. Gardening has become a massive part of our lives over the last couple of years and there’s no way we can live without it anymore. When all our hard work is in bloom and looking beautiful it’s one of the best feelings in the world. Working the garden is also a massive stress reliever when it’s time to get away from work.

So with no garden to speak of, we need to find some other places to bring to life with plants (as you can see there’s a long way to go!).

The first obvious place is the yard (above)- we want a beautiful place to entertain with a little privacy.

    IMG_5242

The second is outside the basement window. The desk in the office faces this so we need an inspirational view.

    IMG_5259

The side wall is just crying out for a colourful climber to brighten up the approach to the house.

There’s an odd little glass room on the first floor so we’re going to use this as a greenhouse for a more exotic style of growing.

The other wall is covered in windows that are perfect for window boxes.

With all these different areas to work on the question is how to proceed with each one? We’re going to spend the next few weeks observing each area carefully, looking at the movement of the sun throughout the day and what happens when it rains. We’re also going to be researching style and techniques online. After recent trips to Amsterdam and Berlin we’ve been massively inspired by all the urban growing we’ve seen.

Check out our Pinterest boards (Search and9839 and select ‘pinners’) to see the kinds of things we’ve been thinking.
So we’ve gone from nearly an acre of land to no real garden to speak of at all – but that doesn’t mean our gardening has to stop. With a bit of research and some European inspiration we’re really excited for the future!

Olly, Mikey and Emre certainly didn’t hold back from answering the most difficult of your questions…

Eggs hard boiled or soft boiled? Chinese or Pizza? Dog or Cat?… If you’re still reading it was, “Poached”, “Chinese” and “Otter”.

Fear not though, it wasn’t all food and animal questions… apart from the Dinosaur or Unicorn question where strangely “Dinosaurs” won out.

There was some talk of the music industry greats where they preferred “Beyoncé to marry and Ri Ri to party with”.

They’d give Harry Styles an “11” out of 10, whilst judging their own fame at around a “7.3”.

Knowing if someone likes it crusty or not is a very important question in any relationship and YearsAndYears are certainly a fan of “Crusts”.We’re talking sandwiches dear!

On top of this they’re also a fan of the “unibrow”.

Ageing could be a problem for the boys as when asked about the return of Twin Peaks they were, “mixed about it. Love Twin Peaks but don’t want to see the cast looking old.” Then again if they could be anyone for a day it would be “Bruce Willis” and he has to be about 180 by now right?

Seeking advice on gym tips for their larger fans, the lads said to, “screw exercise and pass the potato chips”. Words we all like to hear, but, when talking about hot beverages they also say to “forget about the sugar, take a spoonful of me.” Not quite sure they’d t in the mug but maybe we could spoon elsewhere?

Finally the best and slightly disturbing question of the #Ask session enquired as to the cute Disney nickname they gave their dick. (Turns out, it was a slightly couldn’t be bothered to get up “Dopey”.)
