  • Top 11 Gay Characters In Mainstream Movies

When’s the last time you saw a gay character in a mainstream movie? A while? Recently? Although gay people are under represented in the film world, there are more of us around than you might think. We’ve put together our list of the top 11 gay characters in mainstream movies. Each one of them is terrific in their own special way.

    11. Dr. Frank-N-Furter – The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Dr. Frank-N-Further (Tim Curry) from The Rocky Horror Picture Show is technically bisexual. He seemed to prefer men to women, after all he created Rocky, but we also see him get it on with Brad and Janet.

    10. Michael Caffrey – Billy Elliott

Michael Caffrey (Stuart Wells) comes out in Billy Elliott after warming Billy’s cold hands on his body. It’s brilliantly shot and shows that to Billy, Michael’s friendship is more important than whether he likes boys or girls.

    9. Jack Twist Brokeback Mountain

Jack Twist’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) journey to self-acceptance is a beautiful one. It’s great to see his character grow in confidence as he accepts his sexuality, even if what happens to him at the end did leave us a bit traumatised.

    8. Ennis Del Mar – Brokeback Mountain

Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) is reluctant to form an emotional connection with Jack in Brokeback Mountain. But after learning about his childhood memories of what he saw done to gay men we could understand why.

Irwin (Stephen Campbell) was the Teacher in The History Boys. A geeky character who encourages his students to follow their passion. 4. George Downes – My Best Friends Wedding

George Downes (Rupert Everett) is best friend to Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts) in Hollywood flick My Best Friend’s Wedding. He’s any openly gay man who charms everyone.

    2. Armand Goldman – The Birdcage

Armand Goldman (Robin Williams) is the owner of a popular nightclub The Birdcage in the film of the same name. Hilariously funny, he tries to play it straight for his son’s fiancées parents.

    1. Albus Dumbledoor – Harry Potter

Albus Dumbledoor (Richard Harris / Michael Gambon) was Head Teacher of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter books and films. It was never said that he was gay until author J.K Rowling outed him, but his fabulous robes and flare of body language (particularly when Michael Gambon took over playing him) hinted at his sexuality.

  • 5 Top Reasons It’s Good To Be Gay

5 Top Reasons It’s Good To Be Gay

I was thinking about all this nonsense from Russia with the laws that, in part, make sure that people are banned from ‘promoting’ gay lifestyles to juveniles.

Not dissimilar in parts to the laws that I grew up with, in the 1980s, whereby Section 28 ensured that schoolchildren weren’t allowed to have homosexuality ‘promoted’ for them.

Well, f**k it all. I’ve decided that it’s time we did promote homosexuality.

I’m composing an advert right now and here are my top 5 selling points (to be read out in a 1950’s radio announcer style):

    1) Double Your Wardrobe:

Chaps: Short of clothes? Then why not go gay? Canny homosexuals can ensure that they always have plenty of decent slacks and jaunty shirts, provided they couple up with a man of similar height and waistline. Just beware that he doesn’t have a mean streak and don’t get mayonnaise on his cashmere as this could cause World War III.

    2) Develop Style and Taste

The world of fashion, theatre and arts is full of those dashing young Gaylords. Why not join them. You too could be decorating your swanky apartment with Designers’ Guild wallpapers and doing quite cunning things with your eclectic collections of crockery that make your men friends green with envy.

    3) Appreciate divas:

Why limit yourself to Indie pop, thrash metal and gangsta rap? There’s a whole world of undiscovered angst out there and it’s wearing gold sequined frocks. From Dusty to Mariah: you’ll learn a whole new warbling style and be a musical genius in any public house quiz.

    4) Find your G-spot:

It appears that Mother Nature played a nasty little trick and the male G-spot is in the back passage of most decent law abiding chaps. Naturally one can discover this without the aid of a male chum and with the use of a device of some sort but why not share the experience with a like-minded fellow?

    5) Save time and money:

    Grindr Fails

Tired of wining and dining a charming young filly only to end up home alone and rather frustrated? Then why not go gay? Save time and money on getting your sexual gratification with a variety of clever methods that these homos have come up with. From cruising grounds to phone apps; there’s no preamble for these innovative young men. One quick type of a few rather Anglo-Saxon words and you can be relieving your manly urges leaving plenty of time for oiling that lawnmower or sorting out your tools in the shed.

Apologies for the stereotypes: this is totally tongue in cheek. Being gay is no problem for me. I’m lucky, I know, that I work in a place where it’s easily accepted that I’m gay, live in a cosmopolitan big city and have a circle of accepting friends.

Spare a thought for those places where the laws are draconian and plain evil and stay politically active.

  • Top 5 Gay Films You May Have Missed

Five Gay Films You May Have Missed

As gay characters and stories continue to move more into the mainstream in Hollywood, films like Brokeback Mountain, Kill Your Darlings, I Love You Philip Morris and Behind The Candelabra are thrust into the public conscience through the use of big name stars, large budgets and critical acclaim. But there are a number of hidden gems out there which may just have passed you by. Whether they are low budget affairs, have unknown actors or are foreign films which do not garner much publicity, there are some great films out there which can delight, charm and move you. So here are five films which you may have missed, but are well worth catching up with.

    Poltergay

In this utterly charming French comedy, a young man, Marc, and his new wife move into an old house which used to be used as an underground gay club, until an unfortunate accident involving a short circuiting foam machine resulted in an explosion, and is now haunted by five gay ghosts.Trapped in the confines of the house and excited by the buff new arrival, the gay ghosts cause Marc to think he is losing his mind, as he is the only one who can see them and the only one who can constantly hear Boney M playing on repeat. His behaviour drives his wife away, and, feeling responsible, the ghosts embark on a plan to get the two of them back together. Don’t be put off by the fact that this film is subtitled, otherwise you will miss this gem of a movie. It is packed full of charm and heart, with a whimsical storyline and a feel good factor, which makes for some enjoyable and undemanding fun.

20 Things You Get Only If You’re A Early Millennial Gay Man

Older Millennial guys let me hear your war cries… We were the first generation of gay men who got to live more freely because of our forefathers’ efforts, we took fashion risks, we grew up with safer sex messages that rocked our world and we saw Charlie Hunnam get rimmed.

    7) You couldn’t talk about being gay with your teachers at school. It was against the law.

Yep. Thanks to Margaret Thatcher and the Tories in the 80’s we were “protected” from talking about sexuality in schools.

Todd was hot. There was no way of denying it.

  • 11 Things You Only Know If You Have Worked In A Gay Bar

Ah the gay bar. Home of drag, porn on the TV and hen nights.

If you’ve ever worked in a gay bar you will have seen it all – the fights, the make ups, the ridiculously sticky floor the back pages of Boyz magazine.

They put up with your aftershave, your drunken “banter” and they get paid less than the go-go boys.

So next time you’re in your local give a thought to the cutie between the bar.

    1) The more pert your pecs the bigger the tips

    ©-artofphoto-Depositphotos

Yep. Basically gay bars are the homo version of hooters. The more pert you are the bigger your tips will be.

    2) The champagne wankers

You, yes you drinking the cheapest Champagne on the menu thinking you’re the best thing since Brad Pitt’s sliced bread. You might be fooling yourself, but that ain’t Vivienne Westwood you’re wearing and you’re definitely not a 30 inch waist.

The more obtuse you become the longer I’ll make you wait.

    3) The Smells

Ahhh there’s nothing like the smell of D10, Jean Paul Gaultier and poppers in the morning.

    4) Those bastard safer sex packs

Who the eff thinks it’s funny to blow up the safe sex pack of condoms and use them as beach balls across the dance floor. At the end of the night the floor is literally filled with dirty, used looking deflated extra strong condoms.

    5) Those bastard free bar magazines

Spilled your drink? Don’t worry use one of the free rags. We honestly don’t mind picking those sodden tattered rags up at the end of evening. Honestly. Bastards.

    6) The fights

It’s not always the boys… Girls calm down…

    7) Kylie and Madonna on repeat

Just because we’re gay and Madge and Kyles are both gay icons they don’t need to be on repeat constantly – and the live version of Madonna’s “Vogue” is crap. Play the real version dammit.

    8) The drag queens

Drinking your way through the profits. Don’t think we don’t see what you’re doing. Bravo.

    9) Being made to go flier

here’s literally nothing worse than being made to go flier out in the cold. The shame if my ex-boyfriend sees me.

    10) Bumping into your ex.

Of all the gay bars in all the world, you have to turn up in my place of work with the turnip you call your new boyfriend.

    11) Hen parties are literally the worst.

When you walk in. All I’m thinking is F**K OFF

  • Wondering how to get over the dreaded effects of jet lag?

Our body clock is a very intelligent feature, which can been thrown off as we travel hundreds of miles per hour, through multiple time zones. Michela Vaginini nutritionist at Nature’s Plus, has given us her top 5 tips for beating jet lag. She says, “Once your body’s natural 24-hour clock has been disrupted there is nothing that can completely beat jet lag. However, there are things you can do, to ease its symptoms and enjoy your holiday.”

    1)Look at the Sun

To rebalance your day and night rhythm try to force yourself to get up just after sunrise. To boost your cortisol production, which is responsible for waking up in the morning, look towards the sun when waking, an open window will do the trick if you can’t get outside. In the evening, look at the sunset until it gets dark. This will stimulate melatonin production in your brain, which is also known as the ‘sleeping hormone’. To help your body relax take Dyno Mins Magnesium by Nature’s Plus (revital.co.uk, £17.75).

    2)Stay away from COFFEE

Several studies have identified dietary components, such as glucose, sodium, ethanol or caffeine as capable of phase-shifting day and night rhythms. Be careful with sugary and junk foods that might have some stimulating additives or flavourings. Stay away from coffee, colas, teas and other energetic drinks or herbs. Be careful with crisps and salted peanuts – they are very high in salt. Try to reduce your salt intake to 2g a day max (1/2 teaspoon). Make sure you read labels as some snacks may contain MSG, which is a popular flavour enhancer, also known as a brain stimulant.
Having an alcoholic drink might seem like a good idea to help you fall asleep but in fact, it will compromise sleep quality and dehydrate you, making it more difficult to adapt to new time zones.

    3)Turn off your phone

Long-time exposure to blue light from our phones, tablets and TVs can interfere with a production of melatonin and confuse our tired body, which will take it as a daylight and sign to stay awake.

    4)Go for a walk

Sunlight stimulates the secretion of serotonin, known as a ‘happy’ hormone that will give you a quick boost of energy. In addition, when our body gets physically tired it induces a deeper better sleep.

    5)Support your adrenal glands

These peanut-size masses of tissue located on top of your kidneys are essential for your stress response and sleeping patterns. When you are jet lagged they are doubling up their workload to keep you awake so they need an extra support. The most important nutrients for adrenal health are vitamins B, which you can find in eggs, organic meat, green leafy vegetables and whole grains (Don’t get tempted with sugary muffins!). Spirulina and algae extract are great super foods for our adrenal glands providing essential minerals and amino acids. To get a complete green foods blend, add a tablespoon of Nature’s Plus Green Lightning (revital.co.uk, £26.40) to your coconut water and feel the energy!

  • Four Cheeky Tips To Get More Leg Room On A Flight

Being crammed into a space not much bigger than a shoe box for hours on end isn’t fun and is not the ideal way to start your holiday. We’ve found 4 cheeky hacks that could get you some much need extra inches.

Momondo’s have come up with 4 hot tips to get a little bit more leg room:

    Be seat savvy

If you want the most legroom it often pays to choose the front seats or seats at the emergency exits in the middle of the plane. These have the most legroom, and this is the same pretty much no matter which airline you travel with.

To sit by the emergency exit though, you’ll be required to be healthy and mobile, so you are able to help open the doors in case of an emergency. With some airlines you can choose your seats for free when booking the flight, whereas with others you can select a seat for a small fee.

Prices for choosing seats vary depending on which company you go with, and how far you fly.

    Again, arrive early

If you have not selected a seat in advance, we recommend showing up at the airport early to check in. The seats are often allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, and you can be lucky enough to get a seat with more legroom.

    Try DIY check-in

Some automatic airport check-in machines allow you to pick your seat for free at check-in time.

    Aisle be back

If you want to stretch your legs during the flight, it’s always wise to choose a seat near the aisle too, where it is easier to get out – and take a walk around the cabin.

  • 14 Things Gay Men Did That Prove They Are Years Ahead Of Their Time

Gay men are known for being early adopters of everything from tech to culture to fashion.

Here are fourteen things you know you found before your straight friends. Some of these we can be proud of, some are better best forgotten.

    1) Electric Blue lighting…

There was a time in the late 90s / early noughties when gay bars were lit almost exclusively (not really) by electric blue lighting. It was like a gay calling card. Moths to a flame. Hardly a bar in the UK didn’t have their logo or name backlit with that midnight colour.
