  • Are poppers safe to use?

    Are poppers safe to use?

Poppers are a well-known, legal aroma used by many bi and gay men during sex, but are they safe to use?

    Are poppers safe to use?

Poppers have a long history in the lives of gay men. They are often used during sex and when inhaled can create a head rush, like a “high”.

They are known to enhance sexual experiences and some believe they make anal sex easier. When you inhale, the chemicals in poppers dilate your blood vessels – which allows more blood to flow to your heart. This is why your face may turn red and your heart thumps a little harder when you take poppers. The effects are short-term, although the headache might last a little longer!

    How do you take poppers?

Poppers come in small glass bottles, usually brown with bright wrapping. They are sold as room aromas, and the idea is that you leave the cap off the top and let the aroma permeate the room. However, many people inhale directly from the bottle.

    What are poppers made of?

The ingredients of poppers have changed over time, they used to be made of amyl nitrate. However today, they are made from alkyl nitrites. Specific alkyl nitrites include butyl nitrite, isopropyl nitrite, isobutyl nitrite and amyl nitrite.

    What does it look like?

Most poppers come in a small bottle, which is sealed and has a child-proof cap. The bottle is usually covered with a bright, colourful plastic brand wrap.

They are dangerous, potentially lethal if swallowed.

    Are they safe?

Poppers are generally safe to use, although they can cause death if swallowed. Also, people who have heart problems should stay away from using them – especially when combined with other medications, such as viagra. They can cause a person’s blood pressure to drop incredibly low.

If you mixed poppers with other drugs such as alcohol, cocaine, MDNA the oxygen supply to your vital organs might be affected, which could cause a coma or even death.

The chemicals are irritating and will cause chemical burns if you get it on the skin. It can cause a rash around the nostrils.

After inhaling many people also talk about a banging headache, although it shouldn’t last long.

In 2014 optometrists warned about vision loss in those who habitually use poppers. There have been reports of temporary and permanent vision loss. It is referred to as “poppers maculopathy”. If you experience any issues with your eyesight you should seek medical advice.

    Poppers are also highly flammable.

    Sexual health risk?

    risks of taking poppers
Are there risks to your health by taking poppers?

Poppers can cause a person to undertake sexual activity that might be risky. Getting carried away in the moment, means that users could try to go further than they otherwise might – for instance, try rougher anal sex, fisting or double penetration.

GMFA warns, “As poppers expand your blood vessels inside the arse, the chance of anal bleeding increases and makes it easier for HIV to enter the bloodstream. Poppers can also influence you to have rougher sex, like fisting, which also increases the chance of bleeding.”

    Are they legal?

Yes, poppers made from alkyl nitrite (Isopropyl Nitrite) is legal to buy (not for human consumption) however, amyl nitrite is a controlled substance under the Medicines Act 1968. Poppers made from Butyl nitrite and isobutyl nitrite have been illegal for a number of years. Website TalkToFrank reveals, “Poppers are not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, but amyl nitrite is regulated under the Medicines Act 1968 and there have been cases where the Medicines Act was used to fine shops for selling poppers. Poppers are also covered by general consumer protection legislation. Possession is not illegal but supply can be an offence.”

There was a worry for some gay and bisexual men in the UK that poppers would have been made illegal in the new Psychoactive Substances Act 2016. In the end, however, poppers were left off the list of substances. Speaking to THEGAYUK.com Lord Paddick, said, “The way that the law is written, it’s any substance that changes your mental state like making you feel happy.

“So suppliers of air fresher for example and potentially florists could be arrested because the scent given off by roses makes people feel romantic, makes them feel better.

“By the strict definition of the law they are supplying a substance which when inhaled through sniffing changes your mental state, that’s how ridiculous this law is.”

  • There’s a strange reason why this cat needs to be re-homed

This tabby, it seems, loves the company of men…

We feel that Gregorovitch is one of the boys because apparently, he has shown that he prefers the company of men, over women.

Leading cat welfare charity, Cats Protection is seeking a male-only home in the North-West for a choosy tabby who has shown a clear preference for men.

One-year-old puss Gregorovitch is currently being cared for by the charity’s Warrington Adoption Centre in Cheshire, where he will happily sit on the laps of the men at the centre, sometimes even hugging their legs when they try to leave.

“It’s very unusual for us to see a cat with such a distinct preference for either men or women,” explained centre manager, Sonia Scowcroft.

“Gregorovitch is a really sweet young cat and loves attention from our male staff and volunteers, but sadly he’s not so fond of the females so we think he’d be best suited to a male-only household where he can be a man’s best friend.

“He’s a lively cat and can become quite frustrated with his current lack of freedom, so we’d like to find him his ideal home as soon as possible, preferably with plenty of outdoor space where he can burn off some of his excess energy.

“Once he has access to the great outdoors, his more exuberant tendencies should calm down and we think he will make a loving and rewarding pet.”

Due to his quirky nature, Gregorovitch would best suit a home with an experienced cat-owner and no children.

Anyone interested in offering Gregorovitch a home can contact Cats Protection’s Warrington Adoption Centre on 03000 120612 or pop in and meet him. The centre is open every day 11am – 3pm, except for Tuesdays, with late opening on Thursdays until 7pm.

Those looking to adopt a cat in others areas of the country can find details of cats needing homes in their area at www.cats.org.uk/find-a-cat

  • Grindr defends sharing user HIV status with outside companies

Dating App, Grindr has defended itself after apparently sharing users’ health data, including HIV statuses.

Chinese owned hook-up app, Grindr has said that it has been “unfairly singled out” after it was discovered that potentially sensitive data about its users was shared with two app optimising companies, Apptimize and Localytics. These companies monitor how users interact with apps and make suggestions on what could be improved.

Data that could have been shared include HIV statuses as well as the last date tested. Grindr has said that the most sensitive information was encrypted and that the information used by the two companies has not been passed onto advertisers.

A Norwegian campaign group, Foundation for Scientific and Industrial Research, said that HIV status information was linked to information shared with the two outside firms.

    We’ve been singled out

Grindr’s security boss, Bryce Case later told US news site Axios that the goal of sharing the data sharing with third-party companies was to improve the app for users rather than sell their data.

Mr Case said, “I understand the news cycle right now is very focused on these issues

“I think what’s happened to Grindr is, unfairly, we’ve been singled out.”

A statement released by the firm, said, “Grindr has never, nor will we ever sell personally identifiable user information – especially information regarding HIV status or last test date – to third parties or advertisers.

“As a company that serves the LGBTQ community, we understand the sensitivities around HIV status disclosure. Our goal is and always has been to support the health and safety of our users worldwide.”

It is understood that Grindr has stopped sharing information with Apptimize. It is now in the process of “winding down” work with Localtyics, according to the BBC.

    “Second Data Scandal”

Gay rights campaigner, Peter Tatchell, said that the potential exposure of users’ health status was “shocking”

    He said,

“Allowing private companies access to the HIV status of Grindr customers is as shocking as it gets and can only add to the anxieties experienced by gay and bisexual men with HIV.

“This is the second data scandal involving Grindr in a week and its users will not be reassured by this latest development.

“There are still 72 countries in the world that criminalise homosexuality and even more have governments that actively persecute LGBT+ people. Security breaches could be exploited to make arrests and by homophobic vigilantes to make violent attacks.

“Grindr and similar app providers must urgently audit their data security measures, come clean about any issues and fix them immediately.

“Data protection is the new frontier in the battle for human rights. Software companies that cater for LGBT+ people arguably have a special responsibility, given the potentially risky countries that many of their users live in.”

The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said it was investigating.

  • This is why there isn’t any nudity in Call Me By Your Name

It was in their contracts. Apparently.

So why was there no nudity in Call Me By Your Name?

There was surprisingly little sex or nudity in Call Me By Your Name – which for a gay film is unusual, but it turns out it was in the contracts of Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet, that there be no sex scenes or nudity or so the original book’s writer, James Ivory, claims and it apparently “rankles” him.

Speaking to the Guardian, James Ivory said,

“When Luca says he never thought of putting nudity in, that is totally untrue.

“He sat in this very room where I am sitting now, talking about how he would do it, so when he says that it was a conscious aesthetic decision not to – well, that’s just bullshit.

“When people are wandering around before or after making love, and they’re decorously covered with sheets, it’s always seemed phoney to me. I never liked doing that. And I don’t do it”

So there you have it… Legal Smegal…

Call Me By Your Name is now available on Amazon and iTunes

  • X Factor winner Louisa’s homophobic Tweets exposed

The 2015 winner of X Factor, Louisa, has had dozens of homophobic tweets exposed.

The singer, who says she was just 14 at the time of the tweets, repeatedly used the anti-gay slur “faggot” on her Twitter from 2013, just two years before she rose to fame on X Factor.

The singer was exposed after Birmingham Pride announced that she would be headlining this year’s event.

The singer, who has failed to release an album since X Factor victory, the only winner not to do so, issued an apology saying she was “young” and “foolish”.

In a statement, she wrote: “When I was a school girl I made some inappropriate remarks on Twitter.

“I was young and foolish, and hanging around with the wrong crowd & didn’t know any better.

“That’s not an excuse, it’s an explanation.

“I’m sorry for some of the comments I made at that time on social media.

“I think it’s important for me to speak out about this and say that I don’t think it is right or appropriate for anyone to use derogatory language at any time or at any age no matter what the circumstances.”

After Birmingham Pride announced Louisa’s headline, a Twitter user published screenshots of some of the slurs.

Birmingham Pride has not responded to the news and it is unclear at this stage whether the pride will keep Louisa as its headliner.

Speaking on the scene to Thrillist:

“I think if we would have written that scene and then sold the movie and made it right away, I would have been more nervous about it. But I’ve known that I’m gonna do this scene for like six years, so when the day came, I had no problem dropping trou. They asked if I wanted a prosthetic one, but then I was like, I’m answering more questions about… if you just… it’s, anyway, that’s what my dick is. You know? There it is.”

  • Can I get Herpes from oral sex?

Can I get Herpes from oral sex?

Is herpes only transmittable with penetrative sex or can you get from oral sex as well?

There are two main types of herpes, HSV1 and HSV2. HSV stands for Herpes Simplex Virus. HSV1 tends to affect the mouth. HSV2 tends to affect the anus or vagina, both, however, are transmitted by direct touch contact.

So yes, you can get herpes (on your genitals) from someone who has a cold sore.

HSV1 tends to show itself as cold sores, HSV2 tends to show itself as genital herpes. There is no known cure for herpes, but its symptoms can be controlled. Medications like CompeedZovirax or Bonjela can help with cold sores, or genital herpes can be controlled with Aciclovir Tablets.

The problem is that herpes is often unknowingly spread amongst people, meaning people either don’t know they have it – or it’s still contagious even when there are no visible symptoms.

How can you protect yourself from Herpes?

Protection, such as condoms, during sex – whether it is oral or anal, is the only real way of making sure that you don’t contract herpes.

Most people have at least one of the strains…

What’s more many people have at least one of the strains. It’s estimated that between 50 and 80 per cent of adults have oral herpes, according to the World Health Organization. That means your risk of getting herpes is actually quite high.

Speaking to THEGAYUK.com Doctor Rick Viney a urology surgeon from the BMI The Priory said, “The two principal strains of herpes are hsv1 and hsv2. Hsv1 classically affects the mouth and hsv2 the vagina and anus. These are transmitted by direct contact, so it is entirely possible for the two strains to end up in the wrong place during oral sex. “

So HSV1 can cause genital herpes, and HSV2 can cause cold sores. The only way to stop transferal is by using condoms or a dental dam.

  • This is the world’s largest Key Lime Pie

    nom nom nom

This is the world’s largest Key Lime Pie

Culinary masters have created the world’s largest Key Lime Pie, one of Key West’s most famous of exports.

Florida Keys, one of the gay-friendliest places in the US,  has just delivered one epic pie, overseen by chef and restaurateur Bobby Stoky who led a culinary team on Saturday, 24 March, to prepare a gargantuan Key lime pie to serve about 2,000 people.

Measuring 8 feet in diameter – the size certified by the World Record Association as the globe’s largest – the giant pastry was made from ingredients including the juice from 5,766 Key limes, 200 pounds of graham crackers and 55 gallons of sweetened condensed milk. The finished dessert weighed around 1,000 pounds.

“It’s a balance between sweet and tangy that makes this pie absolutely delicious,” Stoky said.

Key lime pie is the official pie of Florida, as designated by the state legislature in 2006. Most historic accounts indicate Key lime pie was first created in the kitchen of the Curry Mansion in Key West and referred to as Key West pie.

“The 8-foot pie was prepared in Atlanta, Georgia, at an upmarket shopping mall to showcase the culinary delights available to visitors holidaying in the Florida Keys”

International visitors keen to get in on Key lime pie action can travel to Key West in early summer to attend the annual Key Lime Festival. Running from 30 June, to 4 July, the festival’s events include a ‘Mile High Key Lime Pie Eatin’ Contest’ on America’s Independence Day, where competitors attempt to be the first to devour a 9-inch Key lime pie.
