TODAY IN LGBT HISTORY | Gay marriage becomes legal on the Isle of Man

A brand new law allowed people in same-sex relationships to become legally married on the Isle of Man in 2016.

Chief Minister Allan Bell CBE MHK welcomed the new law and described it as a “historic moment” for the island, which is just off the coast of England.

The Act enables same-sex couples to marry either in a civil ceremony, in a registry office or approved premises, or in religious premises (except those of the Church of England) subject to the agreement of the religious organisation in question.

    Mr Bell commented,

“Recognition of marriage for same-sex couples in Manx law is a truly historic moment, showing just how far the Island has travelled over the past 30 years. It sends out a clear message that the Isle of Man today is a modern, open and inclusive society where equal rights are respected. I believe that the values of fairness and tolerance reflected in this legislation are shared by the overwhelming majority of our population.”

The first in the UK to allow heterosexual couples to get civilly partnered

The legislation also makes the Isle of Man the first place in the British Isles to allow opposite-sex couples to enter into civil partnerships as an alternative to marriage. Civil partnerships have been available to same-sex couples in the Isle of Man since 2011.

The Marriage and Civil Partnership Amendment Act took effect from July 22 under an appointed day order made after Royal Assent was announced in Tynwald.

  • This is how to avoid skin damage from wearing your face mask

And here’s how to protect your face from damage caused by wearing PPE for long periods.

Reddened skin, sores, breakouts and even bruising have all been reported on social media, so we’ve spoken to GP and aesthetic doctor for skin-tech brand FOREO Dr. Raj Arora for her top tips and advice on keep your skin healthy.

Apply a protective barrier cream such as ‘Cavilon Barrier Film’, an alcohol-free, hypoallergenic topical cream. It can act as a protective layer between the skin and the PPE mask. This will help to reduce irritation and sores from continual applied pressure.

Maintain a simple and consistent skin routine. Cleanse with a calming/soothing cleanser. For a deeper yet gentler cleanse, the LUNA 3 by FOREO removes 99.5% of dirt, oil and sweat and has massage modes which help alleviate sore skin.

Omit aggressive skincare ingredients such as retinol or exfoliating acids as these can leave the skin sensitive and more prone to chafing/breakdown when continued pressure is applied.

Add a protective paraffin-based ointment to your skincare routine such as Epaderm or Vaseline to help protect irritated/sore areas of the skin.

Hydration is also key. The skin’s barrier is the outermost layer of the skin (stratum corneum) and it shields skin from bacteria and irritants. It also seals in moisture and hydration. To ensure the barrier is healthy, it is important to drink plenty of fluid throughout the day (at least 2 litres). Additionally, FOREO’s UFO 2 and Farm to Face masking collection can help calm and hydrate your skin. This will allow our skin barrier to remain well hydrated, moisturised and resilient.

Aftercare is important too! For those with sensitive skin, ensure you are following a skin routine. After removing the mask, gently wash the face with a calming cleanser such as Sensicalm from Alumier. Moisturise using a ceramide based moisturiser. Follow up with any barrier creams/ointments to any particularly sensitive or sore areas.

Don’t forget the vitamins. To help treat any nasty bruising from the masks ensure that you have a diet rich in Vitamin C as this is essential for collagen production. Collagen encourages the renewal of cells and therefore helps repair wounds on the skin.

In areas that are particularly sore – you could use a sterile thin piece of gauze or hydrocolloid dressing as an additional barrier. Such as ‘Duoderm extra thin’ or a soft silicone tape. This may be particularly helpful in the sensitive areas like the bridge of the nose. It is, of course, important to ensure that the seal is maintained between skin and mask.

Stay make up free as much as possible

    (C) james-jonathan-pUMvLj8TCbA-unsplash

Dr Arora warns that heavy make-up underneath the mask can mix with sweat/moisture and contribute to clogging pores.

“Due to the humidity under the mask there will be excess sebum production and multiplying skin bacteria which can result in acne. I would recommend staying make-up free if possible. But if you feel the need to wear foundation/concealer then my recommendations for make-up would be to use a mineralised foundation/powder such as Bare Minerals Blemish Rescue powder. Mineralised make-up is oil-free and provides a gentle approach to the skin.

“To help prevent breakouts after using PPE ensure that you use a new clean mask where possible and if you must re-use your mask then ensure you are wiping it clean after use with an alcohol-based spray. Leave it to dry before wearing it. After removing your mask ensure you cleanse your face thoroughly and use a gentle toner to remove any extra residue. I would also recommend using a ceramide based cream moisturiser to help prevent irritation and soothe acne-prone or sensitive skin. You could also use a blue light device in areas that are prone to breakouts to help reduce the acne-causing bacteria on the skin. Espada by FOREO is an easy to use the home device. Prescribed spot treatments such as benzyl peroxide or salicylic acid can be applied to isolated spots once the mask has been removed.”

  • Homophobic hate crime continues to soar in Scotland

Instead of going down, homophobic hate crime continues to grow in Scotland.

Despite having some of the most progressive policies in the UK for LGBT+ people, crimes against gay and bi people, or people perceived to be LGB have continued to rise in Scotland.

Hate crime reports against LGB people are now at their highest level since 2010.

24 per cent rise in charges for homophobic crime

In the period between 2019 and 2020, there were 1486 total homophobic hate crime charges brought. In 2018 to 2019 there were 1194 – an increase of 292 charges for the current year, which is equal to a 24 per cent rise. Last year the rise was five per cent. Meaning that crimes against gay, lesbian and bi people has ballooned in Scotland.

Eighty-four per cent of the charges were taken to court. One per cent of the charges did not make it to court. Nine of the cases could not proceed because there was insufficient admissible evidence.

Transgender hate crime also increased, with one additional charge brought in the period of 2019-2020. Last year there were 40 charges, this year there have been 41 charges. A decrease since a high in 2017/2018 when charges reached 52.

    “Disappointing and, frankly, embarrassing”

Talking to THEGAYUK about the new stats, MP Mhairi Black said,

“It is extremely disappointing and, frankly, embarrassing that homophobic hate crimes are still on the rise in Scotland.

“I hope, though I’m not necessarily hopeful, that these numbers indicate a greater number of people coming forward about the homophobic abuse they receive rather than the number of crimes actually increasing, but no matter which way you look at it this is a disgusting situation for a modern country to find itself in.”

TODAY IN LGBT HISTORY | The Gay Slayer, Colin Ireland is apprehended by police

Serial killer Colin Ireland was charged and convicted of the murders of five gay men in the early 90s.

Early one evening in 1993, a loner and life-long under-achiever Colin Ireland declared a startling New Year’s resolution to a shocked newspaper journalist. He was going to become a serial killer.

Over the next six months, Ireland was as good as his word and went on to lure five gay men to their deaths. As the media whipped up a frenzy of fear proclaiming that a “Gay Slayer” was loose on the streets of London, Ireland continued to taunt those detectives trying to catch him.

Eventually, though, Ireland found himself backed into a corner as police closed the net around him. He was jailed in December 1993.

Ireland died in 2012 of ‘natural causes’ in prison aged 57. He was serving five counts of life imprisonment.

    Who were Colin Ireland’s victims?

Peter Walker, 45 a choreographer. It is believed that he was the first victim of Ireland.

Christopher Dunn, was a 37-year-old librarian.

Perry Bradley III, 35, met Ireland at the Coleherne pub in London.

Andrew Collier, 33, was a housing warden.

Emanuel Spiteri, was 41 and from Malta. He also met Ireland at the Coleherne pub.

Gaydio presenter leaves the station for utterly heartbreaking reasons

Emma Goswell is to step down from her duties as the morning presenter for Gaydio, where she has worked for over 14 years and the reason is heartbreaking.

Taking to twitter, Emma said that she “had news” before telling her fans that she was leaving the UK’s largest LGBT+ focussed radio station, Gaydio and that her last show would be on Friday.

The reason is that Emma’s sister has devastatingly been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and has “come home for palliative care”. According to Emma, her sister’s cancer has progressed “to an extent that the doctors will not treat it further”.

“She has been there countless times for me,” Emma said, “It’s time for me to step up and be there for her and my parents”.

Emma Goswell has been at the station for 14 years and is probably most famous for presenting the lively morning show, which she now does with Dean McCollough. She said the leave from Gaydio was for the “foreseeable future”.

She added that she was “off to do a much more important job, I’m going to be a sister”.

Supporters and fans send their love

Her fellow presenter Phil Marriott wrote, “What a lovely human being you are, Emma. Wishing you and your family all the very best. You’re a brilliant broadcaster”

Singer Lucy Spraggan added, “So much love to you and your family”, while Heather Peace wrote, “Sending love to you and to your family at this time. I’ll miss hearing you on the radio but you’ve absolutely got your priorities in order. Much love Emma”.

Emma ended her message, with a reminder to all her listeners, to “check your boobs and bits”.

  • Birmingham’s LGBT centre attacked for the second time this year

Birmingham’s LGBT centre attacked for the second time this year

“No one else has had their window targeted”

Birmingham‘s very own LGBT Centre, which raises the awareness of the needs of LGBT people in Birmingham, has been vandalised for a second time in just a couple of months. In a tweet, the centre wrote that although the window-smashing might be the work of “petty vandalism” it also noted that none of the other shops or businesses in the immediate vicinity had their windows targeted.

The centre added that the cost of replacing the window was an additional expense that they did not need. The centre doesn’t know whether the damage would be covered by insurance and may have to set up a fundraiser to have the window replaced.

According to the centre, the damage has been reported to the police and the charity is in receipt of an incident number.

In a statement on the official Facebook said, “We have reported to the police and will be getting the CCTV on the island checked we have an emergency contractor going out today to board it up and hopefully it will be covered by insurance if not we may well set up a fundraiser thanks for all who are contacting with offers of support”

Birmingham is home to one of the UK’s largest LGBT scenes and a thriving bar and pride scene.

  • Is it safe to meet someone off Grindr yet?

Is it safe to meet someone off Grindr yet?

It’s been well over 100 days since the UK went into lockdown at the end of March and its citizens were heavily restricted in order to “flatten the curve” of the Coronavirus.

But as these restrictions are slowly lifted and certain elements of lockdown have been eased or removed, we ask, what does the government say about meeting with people for sex – especially when it comes to Grindr or dating hookups?

Of course, the government doesn’t specifically mention hook up apps or whether you can meet with someone for specifically for the purposes of sex, however, it has outlined its guidelines when it comes to inviting people from other households into your own.

Can I invite someone over from Grindr, Jack’d, Hornet or Scuff?

There’s no overriding rule for the UK, each of the four nations, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales all have their own regulations and rules when it’s come to their coronavirus response.

In England, you can have someone from a different household enter your home. The government advises against socialising in groups of more than two households. This means you could have a hook up with someone, the question is, should you? That is up to you in the end.

The government does recommend physical distancing and good hygiene practices. You may not stay overnight at someone’s house unless they are part of your “bubble”.

In Scotland, you can meet up with 2 other households at a time in your own home. However, the Scottish government is warning people to maintain a physical distance of 2 metres “at all times”.

In Wales, two or more households can become an “extended household” which allows them to “have physical contact and stay in each other’s homes.” The Welsh government says that all other households have to meet outdoors.

In Northern Ireland, since the 23rd June meetings of up to six people have been permitted. However, the government in Northern Ireland suggest limiting the duration of the visits, ensuring good ventilation, maintaining good hand hygiene and physical distancing where possible. Overnight stays are not permitted.

    [totalpoll id=”120564″]

Remember, Covid-19 is still prevalent in the UK and it highly transmittable.

Back in March our Agony Uncle, said that if people were going to continue to hook up that it would be a good opportunity to talk to partners about their health and their safety.

He wrote, “I think coronavirus could be a good engine for change or adaptation for our community. It might invite us to start talking more openly about our sexual health, testing and well-being in general and there’s no harm in having a conversation with someone about their health before you hook up.

“The more we talk about these things, hopefully, the less stigma there is attached to our health”.

You should swap contact details with people you hook up with to help with track and trace.

It’d also be wise to make sure you have the contact details of any of that you do have sex with, in order to help with any tracking or tracing, in case you or they become infected with Covid-19.

What about sexual health services are they open?

    face mask on blue background

Not exactly, unfortunately, many of the UK’s sexual health services are not open to bookings for regular sexual health checkups – but to a phone triage service.

Back in May, Doctor Naomi Sutton took to Twitter to remind followers that the NHS sexual services were still available and that anyone who needed them should phone their usual sexual health clinic and access the current phone consulting services being offered.

She told us, “Sexual health services are operating phone consultations, posting contraception, screening tests and medication when needed and seeing patients face to face where necessary”

  • Cornwall Pride pens open letter to MPs about the Gender Recognition Act

Cornwall Pride pens open letter to MPs about the Gender Recognition Act

Cornwall Pride wrote to all of the UK’s MPs to express concerns over the Gender Recognition Act and the delays to “gay cures” in the UK.

“Very concerned over backtracking on trans rights”.

The team that runs Cornwall’s only Pride event, Cornwall Pride has written to all of the UK’s MPs to outline their concerns about backtracking on transgender rights in the UK.

They also criticised the Government for “failing in its commitment to formally respond to the Gender Recognition Act consultation by repeatedly delaying publication of the review”

    It continued,

“However, we are also disappointed to see the leaks of selected sections of the report without proper communication by the Government. This has caused significant distress and anxiety among trans people and wider LGBT+ communities here in Cornwall and the UK. We believe trans women are women, trans men are men and non- binary identities are valid.

“We, therefore, state our support for trans people’s right to self-identification.”

As it stands,to obtain a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) in the UK, transgender people require a medical diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria, implying that being transgender is a mental illness – a view not recognised by the World Health Organisation.

“They must also live in their “acquired” gender for a minimum of 2 years and must pay a fee of £140.

Cornwall Pride adds, “The Government’s own research acknowledges that this process is bureaucratic, expensive, and humiliating for many transgender people. We believe the Government should respect the consultation, demonstrate a consideration for transgender people’s safety and dignity, and continue to explore ways of reforming the GRA”.

“Perturbed to restrict trans women’s access to services and facilities”

    The letter also states,

“We are particularly perturbed by the reported proposals to not only scrap any reform to the GRA, but to restrict trans women’s access to services and facilities in the guise of “safeguarding” safe spaces for cisgender women. One of our supporters has worked in the Violence Against Women and Girls sector, including in a refuge, for more than 13 years and believes such restrictions for trans women are unnecessary and unethical.

“We will be dismayed if the rights of transgender people, both with and without a GRC, are dismantled to appease a “vocal few”.

  • Woman dies after drinking bottle of poppers

Woman dies after drinking bottle of poppers

    People. Please don’t drink poppers.

Despite the fact that all bottles of poppers sold in the UK come with a warning not to drink the contents, one woman in Scotland, unfortunately, downed one and died shortly after.

It is thought that she assumed the bottle was an alcohol miniature, when a friend handed her a bottle that he had purchased from a local store.

    She became seriously ill, fast

The woman, from Angus, was handed the bottle from a male friend who bought two bottles from their local off-license. It is thought that she then drank the content of a bottle of XL Gold before becoming seriously ill and dying shortly after. XL Gold is a popular room aroma, which gives a head rush when inhaled.

She fell ill and died the same day, according to The Metro

    [totalpoll id=”120536″]

Poppers sold and marketed in the UK are legal to purchase, however they are not sold for human consumption. Many people, of course, huff or inhale directly from the bottle and it gives a quick headrush – and often causes a mild headache.
