Why is THEGAYUK.com asking for money?
We envisage a website cleared of clunky, annoying and editorially limiting adverts. Did you know that many ad platforms, including Facebook’s, will not monetize our content because of its “adult” nature – but they’ll happily monetize that of Cosmopolitan‘s, the Daily Mail’s and Men’s Health’s – go figure?
This policy of targetting us for non-monetization has left THEGAYUK.com in a precarious situation. In order for us to cover the stories that matter to a gay, bisexual and curious audience we’re asking that our readers make a small contribution.

Hello from the Founders.
When we started THEGAYUK.com back in early 2012, we set out to create a media platform for the gay community that was completely different from what else was offered on the market. We opened our platform to new writers and contributors who had never written for anyone else. We called our space a platforum, part platform, part forum. We wanted to give space to anyone with ideas, regardless of their politics, race, creed, sex, gender or indeed their sexuality, who needed a place to let their creativity flourish and gain traction.
We’re so happy to say that some of our very earliest contributors are still with us. Some have gone to land their dream jobs at other publications and some dip in from time to time. Some have visited far-flung countries, some have reviewed countless shows, some have even undergone cosmetic surgery to see how effective it was, some have bared their souls for us – every piece of content is treasured and appreciated.
In our time we’ve interviewed Lords, pop stars, soap stars, MPs, gay icons, (we even asked Cheryl Baker if she knew what poppers were). We’ve covered the heartache of some of the loss visited upon our community, we’ve witnessed and shared some of the most significant improvements in legislation for the LGBT+ community. We’ve also saved a cow from slaughter.
We started a digital magazine; we opened the UK’s first online sexual health clinic, we’ve provided free legal advice to scores of people, we began a free condom through the post service, we’ve opened a shop, we’ve media sponsored over 40 Prides across the UK. We’ve travelled thousands of miles every year to get to know about the people of the country we proudly have as part of our name – and never once charged a penny for the service we’ve provided.
It’s taken a long time to get where we are today. As a truly independent company, we’ve never sought money from investors, a huge publishing firm didn’t create us, and we weren’t (and still aren’t) internet millionaires who were able to pump in wads of cash into our baby.
What we have done is spent countless hours in front of our computers, uploading, editing, sourcing and publishing thousands of stories from around the globe.
On a marketing budget of just £2300 (over five years), 36000 hours from us, and a lot of help from our contributors, we’ve grown THEGAYUK.com into an entirely different platform from our competitors. Every follower on our social media is real, every mistake we’ve made, an honest one (and learned from), every comment, like and reaction to our platform listened to and heard.
There has been a lot of change over the years since we started. Online advertising has plummeted, social networks change their algorithms regularly, making it hard for us to get our message to every one of our subscribers, and the media itself is under attack – sometimes fairly sometimes dangerously.
(Here’s the grovel) If every one of our readers gave just £1 we’d fund THEGAYUK.com for the next DECADE (at current expenditure) ensuring that this brand, this entity, this home for many, can continue to connect, entertain and empower the LGBT+ community in the UK.

Know Your Rights.
Cruising Grounds are defined as open spaces where men look for sex with other men. These can be parks, lay-bys, beaches and other public spaces. These are known as Public Sex Environments (PSEs)
Cottaging is looking for, or having sex in a public toilet – this includes any toilet which is open to the public such as Theatres, Shopping Centres, Cinemas and Transport toilets.
Cruising and The Law.
- There is no specific law against cruising in the UK. Sex in public places is NOT illegal as long as other members of the public cannot see you having sex – or are unlikely to come into contact with you whilst you are engaged in sexual activity.
- Police do not have the right to stop and search you for being in or near a cruising ground, unless they suspect you have or are just about to commit a crime.
- Police guidelines suggest that police should only respond to complaints made by the public and not to proactively prohibit men from cruising.
Cottaging and The Law.
- Cottaging is illegal in the UK, so using any of the listings on this site is entirely at your own risk.
- You risk being arrested for cottaging if you are caught in a public toilet, even if you are having sex behind a closed stall door. It is still against the law and you risk criminal proceedings if you are caught.
- In some areas of the UK police patrol public toilets which are known for cottaging.
What To Do If You’re Arrested.
- Always ask to speak to the duty solicitor at the police station before being interviewed or accepting a caution.
- A caution or conviction will result in a criminal record for a sexual offence which you will have to disclose in any criminal record checks.
Safety.
- Your safety is paramount. Cruising grounds have been known to harbour individuals who would like to harm you. It may be wise to carry a rape alarm and to be extra vigilant, especially in the dark. You should get to know your local cruising ground, finding out the exits, dead ends and shortcuts. Keep valuables out of sight or leave them at home.
- Always make sure you’ve brought plenty of lube and condoms.
- You always have the right to say no to the sex you don’t want. Make sure you know your own boundaries and stick to them. If you find yourself forced into an uncomfortable situation move away or leave the area.
- If you are attacked get help by calling out for help.

- We recognise that your data is yours and we do not own any information about you. It is not ours to keep so if you request to have your data removed, it will be. No trace, no hidden files, no reminders in a year’s time to rejoin. Nada.
- You can remove your data, including your profile, from any of the THEGAYUK.com services at any time, by using these instructions for our social network which we will call “the community” and use the email preferences at the bottom of any mailing list email we send to you.

Minors and Children
This service is not for anyone under the age of 18. By using this service or any of our services you agree that you are over the age of 18.
What data do we hold?
If you are a mailing list subscriber, the data we hold about you is fairly minimal. We hold the email address you sign up with and the IP address of the computer that you signed up with.
- We will use that data to provide you with a newsletter sent from one email address. In that newsletter will be an advert. This advert is contextual and not based on personal data. We do not use any of your data in deciding that advert. It is not customised to you but is a community at large advert.
- You have the opportunity to unsubscribe from that newsletter with every mailout that we send. Visit the preferences section at the bottom of the email to adjust your subscription.
- All unsubscribed accounts or accounts that use the “complaint” function provided by their email providers will have their data deleted within 10 days, but usually within 24 hours.
Social Community Data Collection
If you are a member of the community the information that we hold is slightly more substantial but totally voluntary and you can remove or add as much as you like from your account.
- The data we collect allows us to help match you to other users based on your data.
- It also allows us to bring you a better advert experience, by being able to provide you with content and adverts that will appeal to you, based on your data.
- We hold, but do not access, messages both private and public. This is for legal and reporting purposes. These chats are not encrypted and you should not assume that they are private.
- You can download your entire data file. Go to “preferences” and click on “account”. Click on “Export my Community information”.
- Your photos remain your property and we do not claim any ownership of them – and will never use them without your permission – except where you expressly permit us to use them to showcase your own account (i.e as your profile picture, or pictures you choose to share publicly).
- To ensure your location privacy, please make sure that any images you upload should have any location data (EXIF / GPS) removed. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data found in image files.
- When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
- If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

If you are a general website user.
Companies we work with (analytics and advertising platforms) collect Cookies from your browser. How long do we hold on to your data?
We only hold onto data for as long as we need to. Data that has not been used in 12 months, will be deleted. We will continue to hold on to your data until such time as it becomes apparent you are no longer interested or using our services. You can also request that data be removed from our services, provided you are no longer using our services.
If you leave a comment on an article it will remain there indefinitely. We use the Disqus platform for commenting and you need to have an account with that organisations if you wish to comment. You may wish to review their privacy policy here.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to track social shares made on our website. Google automatically collect and store certain information in their server logs which includes device event information such as crashes, system activity, hardware settings, browser type, browser language, the date and time of your request and referral URL, cookies that may uniquely identify your browser or your Google Account, in accordance with their data privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
Reactions, shares and likes

FAQ
I have been added to your mailing list, but I didn’t sign up. Why?
Sometimes people are signed up to our mailing list service, by 3rd parties who think it’s a joke to add someone to a gay website. All emails are treated as double opt-ins. Which means unless the owner of the email address actively opts-in, your email will not be subscribed to any of our lists. Furthermore, we deleted all unactivated after two weeks.
I want to unsubscribe from your mailing lists, how do I do that?
At the top and bottom of every mailing list email we send to you there is a “manage preferences” or unsubscribe link. Simply click that link and you can manage your subscription options.
How long do you keep my unsubscribed email address for?
After two weeks we delete any unsubscribed email and all data attached to it. We hold on to no other information after this time.
