Virgin Holidays Publishes Report on Issues Facing LGBT Travellers

At the beginning of the month, Virgin Holidays published its LGBT travel report, which revealed the not-so-surprising statistic that nearly 1 in 3 LGBT travellers feel that they are treated differently due to their sexuality when on holiday.

If, like me, you’ve travelled to a few far-flung locations, you’ll know that attitudes towards LGBT tourists are sometimes less than welcoming. And so Virgin Holidays have launched an LGBT travel campaign called ‘Lose the Labels’ which looks to make travelling safer, easier and more enjoyable for the LGBT community.

The campaign includes a video of Virgin Holidays staff revealing stories that sound all too familiar, sharing times in which they themselves were faced with discrimination while travelling abroad.

The study goes on to reveal that a significant 37% of LGBT travellers have experienced some sort of discrimination while travelling – with a further 6% actually being threatened with physical violence because of their sexuality – and two thirds of us LGBT Brits refusing to travel to locations with an inhospitable attitude towards LGBT travellers… quite rightly so.

With a startling 80% of those surveyed feeling that the travel industry as a whole doesn’t do enough to keep LGBT travellers informed of local laws that could affect our rights and safety, Virgin Holidays founder Sir Richard Branson had this to say:

“At Virgin Holidays, we believe everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, has the right to be whoever they are, wherever they are. That’s why it is shocking that in today’s society some of us can’t even enjoy a simple holiday without fear of discrimination. It’s fantastic that Virgin Holidays are raising awareness around this important issue.”

The three-year plan will see Virgin Holidays focus on empowering staff, informing customers, and influencing partners. In fact, as part of their commitment to the cause, they will stage an LGBT equalities conference in conjunction with international tourism partners, encouraging partners in conservative regions such as the Caribbean to adopt more LGBT-friendly policies.

The campaign also sees the travel provider partnering with lesbian, gay, bi and trans equality Stonewall, as a Diversity Champion. This will see Stonewall support Virgin Holidays in auditing the workplace on its LGBT inclusion efforts and provide advice and support on how to make it a better place to work for all lesbian, gay, bi and trans members of staff.

We all love to travel, and we should do as much of it as possible in my humble opinion, but it’s important to be safe while we do so. However depressing it is to think that in 2016 not all countries accept us for who we are, it’s important to make sure that whatever holiday destination we choose, we’ll be safe.

Tell us about your less than pleasant travel experiences @TheGayUK #losethelabels to let others know where is safe to travel.

You can find out more information on the campaign at virginholidays.co.uk/losethelabels.

  • 10 ways to reduce your risk of brittle bones

Did you know that one in five men over the age of 50 will suffer a fracture due to weakened bones?

Osteoporosis is known as the “silent disease” affecting around 3 million people in the UK. It mainly affects older people by weakening bone strength and density making breaks and fractures a lot more common.

Worryingly our bone health starts to decline during our mid-30s but a new simple test of your finger and toenails can help you determine whether you’re at risk of osteoporosis.

    TV’s Doctor Dawn Harper said,

“Osteoporosis is a condition often associated with older people, but our bone health starts to decline from our mid-30s, so early identification and intervention is critical to minimise risk and help manage osteoporosis later down the line.

“Knowing your risk from early on will allow you to make necessary diet and lifestyle changes.

“By combining a nutrient-rich diet, inclusive of calcium and vitamin D, with weight bearing and muscle strengthening exercises such as walking, jogging and Pilates, you can help slow down bone loss, strengthen bones and reduce the risk of a breakage.

“This is especially relevant for those at increased risk of developing osteoporosis.”

Dr Dawn Harper’s Top Tips to Reduce Risk of Osteoporosis

    1) Love your bones

It’s never too early to start thinking about your bone health  – the more you can invest in healthy bones before your thirties, the stronger they will be for life. It’s also never too late to start looking after your bones, so whatever your age, keep reading and do all you can to protect your bones

    2) Go for dairy

Bones need calcium, dairy products are a good source of dietary calcium but so are green leafy vegetables. If you are concerned about your calcium intake, talk to a pharmacist, GP or dietician about ways to increase intake which may include taking calcium supplements

    3) Catch some rays

vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and will also keep muscles strong and help prevent falls in older people.  If you’re not getting enough sunlight in the winter months, eat foods rich in vitamin D which include dairy products, oily fish, fruit, vegetables and cereals or  consider taking a supplement

    4) Watch your weight

if your body mass index (BMI) is too high (above 24.9) or too low (below 18.5) it can put you at increased risk of osteoporosis

    5) Stress your bones

Bones need to be used to stay strong  – do something every day to stress your bones – walking, running or dancing are excellent ways to keep your bones healthy

    6) Count those steps

Invest in a pedometer. We should all be doing 10,000 paces a day and if you have a sedentary job you may be horrified by how short you fall. Making sure you manage those 10,000 steps will mean you walk 7.5Kms a day and this will go a long way to protecting your bones for the future

    7) Ditch the cigs

smoking increases your risk of thin bones, so speak to your pharmacist or GP about smoking cessation services and make it a priority now

    8) Curb your drinking

Stick to recommended alcohol limits which are less than you may think – just 14 units a week. Drinking more will increase the risk of osteoporosis

    9) Watch your fizz

fizzy drinks can leach minerals from your bones making you more prone to osteoporosis

    10) Assess your risk

if you think you are at risk, speak to your GP about whether you would be eligible for a DXA scan or you could consider the Osentia at home testing kit (available online at www.osentia.co.uk or www.superdrug.com)

  • OPINION | 10 things gay guys should stop doing

OPINION | 10 things gay guys should stop doing

From a young age we are conditioned on what is right and wrong, but how does that work for the modern day gay man? With many embracing their sexuality in many different ways it is important to remember that we still represent the LGBT community and there are many things we shouldn’t be doing:

    CREDIT: bigstock
    CREDIT: bigstock

    1. Calm down dear, it’s only a commercial

I remember being on a night out where the music was good. It was nearing the end of the night and Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” began to play. I was standing harmlessly next a gentleman in his late forties who began screaming like a twelve-year-old girl. There’s no need for dramatics, and no need to scream.

    2. You are not a Barbie girl living in a Barbie world

I have strong judgement towards those who wear bad makeup. I understand it is a personal choice and it isn’t a problem if you do, but keep it clean and under control. You shouldn’t have foundation on your chest or neck as it does rub on your clothes when you’re dancing around and it is noticeable.

    3. The bigger they are, the harder they fall

I am not a size queen, but it does annoy me that in modern society everybody is more interested in what is in your pants than in your heart. I remember having a conversation over text with a baker. After asking for a picture of his cake he thought I was dyslexic and had spelt cock wrong.

    4. Lesbihonest

Lesbians don’t bite. What do you think they are hiding down there? A gnome? They have as much right to celebrate sexuality as anyone else. My friend recently dated another girl whose arms were so big she could pick me up like Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing – amazing.

    5. You can’t pull off plastic

I don’t and never have understood the cliques of the gay world. Can’t we all just bake a cake filled with rainbows and smiles and everyone would eat and be happy? This isn’t Mean Girls and you are not Regina George.

    6. Blow kisses, not boys

If you make out you’re a slut by kissing various guys throughout the night and bragging about it, it only makes it okay for other guys to call you a slut. Keep it classy and no one will judge.

    7. Snap Happy

If you want to act like you’re in an episode of Will and Grace, be my guest. Just please don’t think it is okay to snap your fingers at others in rest rooms or smoking areas with a catchphrase such as ‘Hey girlfriend’.

    8. Darling, you cannot act straight

How many profiles have you seen with ‘straight acting’ on them. Firstly, if you are using a dating application/website aimed at homosexual men and women then you are in the wrong place. Are you looking for someone to pretend to be straight for you?

    9. If you want money, date Scrooge McDuck

A lot of people seem to be obsessed with money. Personally, I have never found money attractive and couldn’t imagine sleeping on a bed of thin paper notes. It doesn’t matter what your annual income is or what label clothes you wear. It is all about the personality.

    10. Finally, just be you

I think along the lines of trying to fit in with a stereotypical gay world we forget who we are. For years we have been fighting for gay rights, and for people to celebrate their sexuality. Don’t let that put you down, stand up.

  • ADVICE | How to wax your bum

If you’re tired of a hairy crack and you’re looking to do a bit of waxing then listen up as we’ve got some tips for you!

Last week we gave you tips on how to wax your sack and this week it’s all about the crack. If you want a smooth bum then here are some tips to help you get the most out of your waxing experience.

We asked waxing expert, Fardad Moayeri, the CEO of Parissa, for some top tips on waxing your bum and back in the comfort of your own home.

To do these areas Fardad suggests using leg-body wax strips, you can get these from Amazon

    GET A PARTNER TO HELP

Best thing to do is to work with a partner on the back and crack as they can be difficult areas to access. If you can’t work with a partner, then your mirror will have to be your best friend.

    BACK TO THE MIRROR

Stand with your back facing the mirror and turn your head to determine where you need hair removal.

    DIRECTION OF HAIR

Check out the direction of hair growth…then start applying the wax strips in the direction of hair growth and zip-off in the opposite direction.

    KEEP IT TIGHT

Since you’ll want to keep your skin as tight as possible, you can try either sitting backwards on a chair and arching your back…or just arch your back when you’re standing.

    THREE THINGS TO REMEMBER

    1) The key point that makes all the difference: press-on strips IN DIRECTION of hair growth. Zip-off in the OPPOSITE direction of hair growth.
    2) The quicker the strip is removed the better the results.
    3) If you’ve got long hairs…trim them to about 0.5cm.

We recommend Parissa’s wax strips, which you can buy from Amazon.

  • Can Twitter Predict 2014’s X Factor Winner?

The last couple of years we’ve put together a science based (not really) system that will almost accurately predict the winner of X Factor, it’s called TWATS (Twitter Winning And Theoretical Service)

Based on the fanbases of the contestants (their twitter following) we have almost accurately predict the top 4 of each of the series.

In 2012, we predicted that Union J, Lucy Spraggan, Ella Henderson and James McArthur would be victorious – that instance, James McArthur won and Ella Henderson came 6th Union J came 4th. Lucy Spraggan left the competition due to sickness.

In 2013 the top 4 in the TWATS were Sam Callahan, Nicholas McDonald, Kingsland Road and Tamera Foster. In the end Sam Bailey came first Nicholas McDonald came second, Luke Friend and Rough Copy came 4th. Tamera came 5th and Sam came 7th.

So judging on this year’s numbers:

    Jack Walton 148K

    Stereo Kicks 148K

    Andrea Faustini 147K

    Lauren Platt 132K

    Paul Akister 105K

    Ben Haenow 122K

    Jay James 101K

    Fleur East 68.6K

    Lola Saunders 62.7K

    Stevi Ritchie 43.7K

    So what do you think?

X Factor continues tonight at 8:00PM on ITV 1

  • 10 things you probably didn’t know about Freddy Parker

10 things you probably didn’t know about X Factor’s Freddy Parker

    1) How old is Freddy Parker?

Fresh-faced Freddy Parker is 18-years-old and was born in 1998.

    2) Is Freddy Parker Gay?

Since entering the X Factor competition thousands of people have search THEGAYUK to find out if Freddy Parker is gay or not. Although we’ve researched his social media accounts it looks as though Freddy identifies as straight, but is comfortable to photographed with other guys in just their swimwear. Bravo!

    3) He originally comes from Ashford in Maidstone.

Up until his appearance in the X Factor Freddy was a schoolboy at the Sutton Valence School in Kent.

    4) He’s a huge Lady Gaga fan…

…and why wouldn’t he be! After seeing her in concert he remarked, “I’ve been to heaven.”

    5) He’s a dog lover…

    and gets distracted by them!

    6) He hasn’t had the best luck on the road.

He narrowly evaded going to jail after being handed a 9-month driving ban, reduced from 12 months, after crashing his car while over the legal drink limit. He went on a drink-driving course back in February.

    Freddy said,

“It was such a stupid error of judgement. I was so naive to think I could touch even a bit of alcohol and get behind the wheel of my car.
“I’ve listened to other people’s stories and it horrifies me to think about the damage I could have done.”

    7) He’s got 22,600 fans on Twitter.

Just a baby when it comes to X Factor’s hall of fame on Twitter, but we’re only a few weeks into the show.

    8) Has he got big balls?

Nicole seems to think so! During Motown week, #FreddyBigBalls was an actual trend on Twitter after she told him he had a big pair!

    9) His teeth have been professionally whitened

As with all X Factor contestants, his teeth have been given the Simon Cowell treatment.

    10) He cheated on his words!

Perhaps he thought we wouldn’t notice but during the X Factor audition process, he wrote his lyrics on the palm of his hand!

  • Check out X Factor Freddy’s Body

Have you seen Freddy Parker’s body yet?

Goodness me. We need to have a lie-down. Not only did we discover this week that Bratavio’s Bradley Hunt was hiding a seriously hot body, but blonde hunk Freddy Parker is hiding an incredible body as these Instagram posts from last year reveal.

Usually found hiding his bod behind the piano Freddy certainly has got a smoking hot body and luckily we’re treated to a number of pictures showcasing his poolside look.

For Motown week, the second of the live shows, Freddy got out front behind the piano to showcase his frontmanship. His performance got judge Nicole very excited who exclaimed, “he’s got legs!”
