Piers Morgan apologises after referring to Sam Smith as a “he”

Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan has reached out to Sam Smith after using the wrong pronouns for the singer. In a tweet Piers’s referred to Sam as “he”

Piers Morgan was criticising Sam Smith after the star took part in a menswear fashion campaign – after coming out as gender non-conforming last month.

In his original Tweet Piers wrote, “Mr Smith came out as a gay man 5yrs ago, then as non-binary gender neutral 6 weeks ago, now he’s advertising ‘Man’s Concept Menswear’. It’s hard to keep up!”

However, Piers was called out for “misgendering” Sam Smith – with many taking exception to Piers using the pronouns “he”.

Sam Smith asked that people use “they, them and theirs”.

Piers offered an apology directly to Smith saying,

“CORRECTION: ‘their’ & ‘they’. My sincere apologies to @samsmith for misgendering him as male after he advertised ‘Man’s Concept Menswear.’

However, Piers still used “him” and “he”.

  • GAY TRAVEL | Malta: Gay Pride in Europe’s most LGBT-friendly country

GAY TRAVEL | Malta: Gay Pride in Europe’s most LGBT-friendly country

Gay pride gatherings, festivals, and parades are a fantastic opportunity for the LGBT+ community to come together and fly the flag with pride, hence the name.

Still, they are also a chance to highlight issues affecting the community in particular and the world as a whole. S

uch celebrations are slowly, and sometimes with difficulty, spreading across the globe, but there is one place that always feels like the heart of Gay Pride, and that is Malta. For Malta to be honored with the title European Capital of Culture in 2018 says a lot about its open-mindedness when it comes to arts and culture. Still, it may surprise some people to find that the island has some of the best rights and attitudes towards the LGBT+ community, anywhere! Add to this the fact that the island is a beautiful blend of Mediterranean landscapes, gorgeous beaches, picturesque towns, and historic architecture, and you have to ask the question, why would you celebrate it anywhere else?

And so it was inevitable that I was going to find myself in Valletta in early September for the Allied Rainbow Communities’ Malta Pride Parade and Celebration Week. Following a record number of participants and visitors last year and ARC’s vow to push the numbers even higher this year, I had to join the celebrations again.

It is safe to say that the event takes over Valletta. Still, as invasions go it has to be one of the most colorful, fun and friendly in history and thousands of revelers, bystanders, onlookers and allies of the LBGT+ community squeezed into those sun-kissed and historic streets to both celebrate their lives and make a stand in solidarity of each other; the frivolous and the fantastic, the poignant and the political (with a small p,) side by side, hand in hand.

And while the parades with all their glitz and glamour are what make the headlines, the week offered all manner of related events and attractions too, from pool parties to films, from talks and discussions to bars, beaches, and nightclubs. From the social to the serious, there was something for everyone. And all this comes together under a neat umbrella, undoubtedly a multi-colored one with some added glitter, to celebrate the right to be different. And whereas some such events are being side-tracked by consumerism and marketing opportunities, Malta’s heart is very much in the right place. To this end, it was great to see an increased number of youths accompanied by their LGBT+ guardians experiencing the celebrating this great event, many getting right into the spirit of the occasion, and sporting the unwritten uniform of bright colors and fun accessories.

Malta in early September is a sun-worshippers paradise and the week sees the whole island on heat…take that whichever way you wish…and with this in mind the parade was pushed back to 5 pm to allow for the slight cooling of temperature, but a Pride Parade always manages to turn up the heat both physically and metaphorically! Flights with Air Malta are direct from London.

This year’s event even coincided with the grand opening of Valletta’s elegant Rosselli Hotel, which threw wide its doors and welcomed esteemed guests such as Malta’s Prime Minister, and of course yours truly. The hotel made for the perfect base of operations, easy walking distance to all the main activities, and a luxurious 5-star stay.

The hotel offers a touch of sophistication with high-vaulted ceilings and spacious rooms which mix old-school class with modern comfort. And with an outdoor pool, roof garden, and relaxed lounges, it made for the perfect retreat to balance the energetic fun of the day.Pride gatherings are becoming part and parcel of many significant cities calendars across the globe, but nowhere does it quite like Malta.

Not only does ARC throw a great party, they are reminding people precisely what Pride events are all about. Roll on 2020!

  • Gay-friendly bar in Uganda raided, 125 arrested

Gay-friendly bar in Uganda raided, 125 arrested

According to a report, a bar in Kampala, Uganda known to be LGBT+ friendly was raided by police, resulting in the arrest of 125 people.

The OutRight Action Internation campaign group a gay-friendly bar in the Ugandan town of Kampala was raided by police on Saturday night. According to their report around 125 were arrested and charged with drug possession which OutRight says is an indication of “an intentional and growing persecution” of gay people in the country.

The bar in question is an LGBT+ friendly bar and has been used by local activists for community events for over seven years. It was the only bar raided on the evening in question, indicating a clear targeting of gay, lesbian, bi and transgender people. According to Kuchu Times, the people arrested are due to appear in court within the next couple of days.

Kasha Jacquelin, a Ugandan LGBT activist, told OutRight:

“The past has shown that it is difficult to prosecute anyone for being LGBT. Using trumped-up drug charges is a new and frightening tactic; one which is really hard to tackle and will make our battle even tougher.”

Persecution of LGBT+ people has increased in Uganda in recent months, as rumours of the so-called “Anti-Homosexuality Act” which would impose the death penalty for same-sex relations have resurfaced.

At least four people have been killed in suspected hate-motivated attacks. Arrests of LGBT+ people have also increased. Prior to the raid carried out on November 10th, 16 people were arrested and charged with “trafficking in persons” and “carnal knowledge against the order of nature” at the end of October.

    Increasing hate and stigma

Jessica Stern, Executive Director of OutRight Action International, commented:

“The resurfacing of the anti-homosexuality bill in a country which already prescribes life imprisonment for same-sex relations could only have had one intention – to increase hate and stigma against LGBTIQ people, putting them at heightened risk of arbitrary detention and attack. That is exactly what is happening. The growing intensity of arrests, the clear targeting of an LGBTIQ friendly bar, makes it painfully clear that a witch hunt is being mounted against LGBTIQ Ugandans.”

Is sex between men illegal in Uganda?

Sex between males has been criminalised in Uganda since British colonial times. At the turn of the century, the law was extended to include sex between females.

Articles on “unnatural offences” and “indecent practices” have been retained in the Penal Code since independence. “Carnal knowledge against the order of nature” between males carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The so-called “Anti-Homosexuality Act,” prescribing a death penalty for gay sex, was first passed by the parliament of Uganda in 2013 and signed into law by President Museveni in early 2014. It was invalidated by the Constitutional Court of Uganda on procedural grounds the same year.

According to local activists, the Minister of Ethics and Integrity of Uganda, Simon Lokodo, has indicated an intention to reintroduce the bill.

  • DILEMMA | Can I use lotion for lube?

DILEMMA | Can I use lotion for lube?

A reader asks whether it’s safe to use lotion instead of lubricant during sex.

    Dear TGUK,

Can I have sex with lotion as lube?

    J

Using the right lube is key to having comfortable and enjoyable sex. (C) BIGSTOCK

    Dear J

There are many liquids you can use as lube, but lubes designed for sex are the best lubes to use.

While lotion might feel good your penis, it might actually have chemicals in it that will irritate the inside of your arse – which will lead to painful sex or even a burning sensation.

When it comes to sex, the wetter the better. Always use lube when having anal sex. It will make it more comfortable and better protect you against tears and pain. Madeinitaly / Pixabay

Also, a word of warning, particularly if you’re using condoms during anal sex, you should really only use water-based or silicone-based lotions. Lotions and lubes that are oil-based could actually destroy a condom, leaving you unprotected from sexually transmitted infections.

Do yourself a favour and buy a lube which is longlasting and feels good for your ass and dick!

  • DILEMMA | Why do I feel so sad after sex?

DILEMMA | Why do I feel so sad after sex?

    Dear Uncle

“Why do I feel so sad/empty after sex?”

    Alex

    Dear Alex

Firstly thank you for reaching out and I’m sorry to hear that you experience sadness and emptiness after sex.

Firstly, don’t fret, many people experience all sorts of emotions after having sex – sadness and emptiness can be felt by many. Sex is a highly emotional and intimate activity – that sometimes, we as men can forget to check in with how we’re feeling about the sex we’re having.

You don’t go into detail about the type of sex you’re having or if you’re having it with multiple people or just one person, so I’ll try and be broad with my answer.

There’s a couple of questions I’d like you to think about – and perhaps that can help you get into a happier place when it comes to the sex you’re having.

Why do I feel sad after sex?

SEX SADNESS: Is the sex you’re currently having the sex you actually want?

To explore this further – are you able to advocate fully what it is you want from your sexual partner(s) and are you getting that?

Sex can be complex – there are many factors to take into consideration and everybody who’s taking part needs to be on the same page – to get to this place you need to have a conversation about what it is you want, what they want and whether you’re both compatible. Conversations about sex needn’t be complicated or awkward. Be upfront and honest.

If you feel you’re unable to communicate properly then you may be having the sex you don’t want – which could be leading to the feelings you’re having.

    CREDIT: Yastremska-bigstock

What kind of sexual encounters are you looking for?

And are you getting those? For instance, if you’re looking for a deeper connection but you’re only having one night stands this may be causing you to feel empty. It can be very difficult to get emotionally intimate with someone you’re hooking up with for a one night stand, although we do have some tips here.

    Do you actually want sex?

Sometimes we can feel pressured into doing things we don’t want, and it can be difficult to say “no” particularly in the highly sexualised world that we all live in.

We’re bombarded with images and articles about the sex we should be having and how often we should be having it. Step back and ask yourself – is this what I really want? It’s absolutely okay to not want sex or have actually have sex – especially if it makes you sad.

Check-in with yourself and see how you’re doing.

Anyway, I hope this helps somewhat, write back to me if you want to explain a little further about your feelings.

  • Quick Drive. VW T-Cross Diesel reviewed

Quick Drive. VW T-Cross Diesel reviewed

    What Have We Got?

In May, THEGAYUK was invited to the launch of the new VW T-Cross. A compact SUV corssover based on the Polo’s MQB platform.

We were surprised to learn that there was to be no diesel available for this model. So it was a surprise that just 5 months later, a diesel option had been added to the T-Cross.

Has the addition of a diesel engine been worth the somewhat short wait and the extra £1675 asking price? We took one for a quick drive to find out.

    Driving

VW have a great back catalogue with their diesel engines so I had high hopes for this T-Cross. Fitted with the 95PS 1.6 litre diesel engine, its lowdown grunt on paper looked appealing. It produces 250Nm of torque between a lowish 1500rpm to 2000rpm.

Sadly, on the road, it just didn’t transpire in the way I had hoped for. Compared to the similar outputs of the 1 litre petrol, the diesel engine made the youthful looking T-Cross feel a little flat. It had lost its brio of enthusiasm and I couldn’t get over that disappointment.

The chassis has great ability to carry itself well over various surfaces and the handling is more on the safe and predictable so but nonetheless, it is still worthy of piloting around with gusto. However, in having lost its jolly enthusiasm, there was little encouragement to enjoy the handling of the MQB platform in this guise.

    Inside

Inside, the T-Cross is the same as before. You wouldn’t expect any changes to be made this short in its production life and to be fair, there isn’t anything that needs changing. It is all useable stuff with rear sliding seat that alters the size of the boot or rear legroom.

Depending on spec, the dashboard and fascia can be jazzed up with colour making it a rather pleasant place to be.

    The Verdict

I’m a fan of the diesel engine. There is still a place in the market for the manufacturing of them. Not so in the T-Cross. It would seem unless outright miles to the gallon are your thing, then this will fit the bill.

According to the WLTP combined figures, it’ll manage 52.8. A whole 7 more than the petrol. For those 7 miles you get a great car with lacklustre performance and I can’t see the benefit of that. It’s a saving of around 2 pence per mile. If I’m to be seen as less of a villain for not liking this car, I will say that the DSG gearbox is better suited to the diesel engine than the bigger petrol option.

    The Lowdown

    Car –  Volkswagen T-Cross 1.6 TDi 95PS DSG

    Price – £23,980 (as tested)

    MPG – 52.8mpg (WLTP combined)

    Power – 95PS

    0-62mph –  11.9seconds

    Top Speed –  112 mph

    Co2 – 140 (WLTP g/km)

Who will win the race to 10 Downing Street – will Boris keep his premiership or can Corbyn or even Swinson knock him from the top spot?

With our 3rd General Election in 4 years just around the corner, THEGAYUK.com undertook a flash poll to understand where its readers were thinking about putting their “X” when they visit the voting booth in December.

THEGAYUK.com asked its readers which way they planned to vote with the choices being Conservative, Labour, Lib Dem or “Other” which could include Nationalist parties like the SNP or single-issue parties like the Brexit Party.

There were only four options permitted – this the maximum number of choices Twitter allows its users for polls.

In total, nearly 360 people took part in the survey, which lasted just over two days via a Twitter poll.

Labour comes out on top – but only just

Overall Labour, led by Jeremy Corbyn, came out on top with 38 per cent of the vote but was closely followed by the Liberal Democrats, headed by Jo Swinson. The Conservatives, with the incumbent Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, managed to grab hold of 15 per cent of the vote, while “other” which would you include parties such as the Greens, UKIP, The Independent Group For Change, Brexit Party, Plaid Cymru

    How will you vote?

While the survey is in no way scientific or wholly representational of the LGBT+ community in the UK, it does give some insights into which way THEGAYUK’s Twitter followers are planning to vote come December 12th. Discuss politics and more in our politics forum.

  • REVIEWED | Bowie-Boy BLITZKREIG!

    REVIEWED | Bowie-Boy BLITZKREIG!

    ★★★★★| Bowie-Boy BLITZKREIG

Lady Sasha is transfixed by the imminent, Second Cumming of Bowie 2.0, AKA Sven Ratzke, the Male cabaret doyenne supreme, brilliantly – and quite breath-takingly – reimagining Bowie’s classics for the ages! Intrigued?

Don’t dawdle – be there 10th/11th November @ Crazy Coqs, Zedel Brasserie, Piccadilly Circus Tube. 5 stars!

Do you worship the final breaths of Bowie as regurgitated by his slavish tribute ghosts?

FFS, why? Where’s the dignity – and taste – in kissing the flaccid butts of barely-capable sycophants laughably chasing evasive, glam-rock god mystique?

Who needs tribute toss-pots lazily hi-jacking the star-power of dead pop princes? Not me, but way too many clueless clowns – AKA the brain-dead, general public – are gluttons for the non-stop, shameless, and – more often than not – shockingly poor acts of fawning, musical necrophilia called tribute shows.

But – in a bitter and ludicrous irony – the worst purveyors of tribute tripe are, most often, the original singers of modern standards themselves. Frankly, there are few spectacles on planet earth more pitiable than some pathetic ghost of a former icon grasping at – but spectacularly missing – their totally extinct charisma.

The worst offender? Arguably, Minelli, petulantly petrified in a lifestyle amber of raging mommy issues, cheesy pastiches of faux-decadence, deadbeat drama-queening and flaccid, grand-folly flings with chancers and confidence trickster train-wrecks. If nothing else, Liza’s a textbook lesson on how not to idolise your musical muse, which, quite disastrously, was her mom; who the f*ck needed a raging reincarnation of Judy’s manias, especially heightened by a seemingly obligatory, 1970s celebrity coke culture?

Mercifully, some tribute acts have both style and dignity. Meet Sven Ratzke, a name inexplicably underexposed to UK audiences, but an interpreter of Bowie – and other, equally strange and maverick talents – par excellence. And why does Sven’s artistry tower far above bland, Bowie-by-numbers clones like the thoroughly glib and unengaging Dusty Limits? In a word, panache; Sven both respects Bowie’s repertoire and treats it with the semantic intimacy it deserves, making many of Bowie’s finest songs – Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide or Heroes, for example – riveting disclosures and confessionals, not the flayed symphonies of raw, passionate yearning found on Bowie’s untouchable run of 1970s masterpieces.

Imagine – if you can – a towering, 6ft 4 Nordic male Maria Callas, the incomparable opera diva who captivated music lovers – (and, tragically, the coarse, greedy and unappreciative lust of future husband Aristotle Onassis) worldwide. Better yet, Sven – all ethereal, golden locks and seductive yearning – perfectly embodies mime and maestro Lindsay’s Kemp’s first impression of Bowie; ‘It was as if the Archangel Gabriel suddenly appeared and took my breath away…’

Indeed; Sven’s voice soars with the power, passion and sheer, jaw-dropping beauty of an androgynous eagle, his stage presence uncannily ramping the unearthly joys, sorrows and metaphysics of Bowie’s songbooks to unguessable – and previously unsuspected- heights. In the compact, Art Deco intimacy of Zedel, Sven’s stage presence shines with the incandescent intensity of a huge, stadium performance, completely derailing tepid expectations of tired – and shockingly clichéd! – cabaret angst.

And the effect of Sven’s approach? More exhilarating than a full-body blow-job; quite effortlessly, he captures the instantaneous magic sparked – and as quickly extinguished – by a chance, sexually-explicit whisper from a random street doorway. Never been hit on that way? How sad; I have, and it’s uniquely arousing, and often, in the darkened, midnight pavilions of Rue Saint-Denis, Paris’s immemorial hive of prostitution, husky female sighs inviting instant intimacy have sunk immediate fish-hooks in my suddenly thrilled, barely-remaining male flesh.

And similarly, at Zedel – the ideal, faux-Art Deco setting for radical retromania – Sven’s radiantly seductive aura turns massed, gay male heads from the get-go. All zip-up, double-breasted, violet gabardine jumpsuit and Cuban-heeled, turquoise-glitter knee boots, he’s a textbook Aryan uber-jugen. And there are very few performers – straight, gay or magically in-between – who could convincingly rock a frosted, Farrah Fawcett-Majors feather-cut, but Sven simply transcends time-capsule retro-chic, his storming charisma making his sartorial choices seem intriguingly timeless and non-specific.

It’s a heady, visual ambiguity he also brings to his singing, especially his hauntingly beautiful take on Where Are We Now, but Sven’s no one-note Bowie copyist; rather, he’s a startlingly inventive, improvisational raconteur who skewers reckless hecklers – like one obtuse, British jerkenstein at Zedel – with a word.

In a seamless, utterly immersive framing narrative, Sven shares riveting memories of his magical, aural seduction on first hearing Bowie, and punctuates the songs with luscious anecdotes of Cold War Berlin diva Romy Haag, Bowie’s transsexual muse. Enchantingly, he’s bashfully modest regarding his own, very considerable songwriting chops – his song ‘The Torch’ brilliantly recreates the glamour of lost Berlin – and, like every truly exceptional talent, closes his short, taut show leaving the audience simply pleading for more!

And, guess what? Excitingly– for his new mountain of instantly converted fans – Sven’s back in London, this weekend, at Zedel Saturday and Sunday, an unmissable to catch a world-class talent on the cusp of global adoration! Meanwhile, don’t despair – just feast on his superb, self-penned and interpretive album Homme Fatale and his equally fine, newest release Where Are We Now.

Don’t delay – book your tickets today! This is truly the Second Cumming of Sven!
