    Boybands are not body positive places

    Former Boybander, Ben Adams from late 90’s band, A1, just revealed that for one particular photo shoot he was apparently “too chubby” to take off his vest top, while the rest of his band were photographed without their tops on. This, despite Ben looking as hunky as the rest of his bandmates.

    Taking to social media, Ben shared a throwback picture of him and his A1 bandmates, with him the only one photographed with a top on. The singer was posed with a white vest top on and placed slightly behind Christian.

    The boyband had success during the last few years of the 90s and then in the early 00s, before disbanding.

    Ben Adams was one of the lead singers of the popular British/Norwegian boyband who had huge hits with a remake of 80’s classic “Take On Me” and “Same Old Brand New You”.

    Speaking about the throwback picture Ben wrote how he wasn’t allowed to take off his top because he was “too chubby” writing, “Guess who was too ‘chubby’ to be allowed to go without a vest”.

    Elton John has ended up in a wheelchair after injuring himself, but he won’t let that stop him from seeing some of the world’s top sights.

    Looking glum and down in the dumps, one of the world’s most successful entertainers, Sir Elton John has ended up wheelchair-bound after spraining his ankle, whilst visiting Italy.

    The “Candle In The Wind” singer took to Instagram uploading a picture of him, in a trademark tracksuit, looking down in the dumps, sitting in a wheelchair. The singer was quick to let his loyal fans know that his injury wasn’t too bad.

    However, he said that despite having sprained his ankle, that he wouldn’t let that spoil his fun, saying “Not even a sprained ankle could keep me away from seeing one of the most beautiful museums in the world”. He was visiting the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.

    Rugby player, Israel Folau has come under fire for anti-LGBT+ social media posts.

    Australian rugby player, Israel Folau, 30, is set to be fired by Rugby Australia and the New South Wales Rugby Union after a social media post by the player suggested that “hell awaits” gay people.

    On Wednesday, he posted on Instagram that “drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists and idolaters” should “repent” because “only Jesus saves”.

    In a statement, the governing bodies said, “He does not speak for the game with his recent social media posts, In the absence of compelling mitigating factors, it is our intention to terminate his contract.”

    “Israel has failed to understand that the expectation of him as a Rugby Australia and NSW Waratahs employee is that he cannot share material on social media that condemns, vilifies or discriminates against people on the basis of their sexuality,” the governing bodies said in a statement.

    “As a code, we have made it clear to Israel formally and repeatedly that any social media posts or commentary that is in any way disrespectful to people because of their sexuality will result in disciplinary action.”

    “Turn away from evil”

    In another tweet sent on Tuesday, Folau wrote “The devil has blinded so many people in this world, REPENT and turn away from your evil ways. Turn to Jesus Christ who will set you free”, after Tasmania opted to make a baby’s gender optional on birth certificates in its state.

    Netflix has confirmed that 10 episodes of Chris Lilley‘s brand new show, Lunatics, is coming out in mid April. The show, which looks like it follows Chris’s usual format of a comedy mockumentary following several different characters over a set period is due to stream from the 19th April on Netflix.

    Netflix tells us, “The documentary examines the lives of six extraordinary individuals and explores the idea that people are not what they seem at first. Through documentary interviews, self recorded and fly on the wall footage the six intriguing subjects are observed over a period of months. Their stories unfold with hilarious results. As eccentric and odd as they all are, they are scarily recognisable types and they teach us that it’s ok to just be you”.

    Not taking your shoes off on entry, asking for the WIFI password – and using your mobile phone at the dinner table have emerged as house rules guests break most regularly, it has emerged.

    Research also revealed polite guests should always use a coaster when setting their drink down and always put the toilet seat down.

    Steering clear of private areas of the house, not swearing in the presence of your host and sitting down at the table without washing your hands also made the list.

    Leaving your host to do the washing up is also considered ‘rude’.

    Richard Sinclair MBE, executive director of connectivity at Virgin Media, said: “Wherever we are, whatever we are doing, we always have the urge to stay online.

    “When visiting friends and family, research has shown that asking for the WiFi code is one of the first things people do.

    “As is courtesy when visiting someone else’s home, you should be mindful and always respect their rules to avoid any awkward situations.“

    The study also revealed while 71 per cent said there aren’t any particular rules they have which a guest must follow, those that do said it’s just a matter of ‘respect’.

    It also emerged more than a quarter of British homeowners find it ‘impolite’ when guests ask for the WiFi password during a visit.

    And one in 10 adults have gone to the extreme of refusing to hand out their WiFi password, reasoning ‘they’ve come for a visit, not to sit glued to their device’.

    If homeowners are to give out their WiFi password, they believe guests should wait for up to 30 minutes before asking, according to research carried out among 2,000 adults.

    But those who took part in the study who are frequent dinner guests at friends’ and neighbours’ homes feel strongly that they aren’t doing anything particularly wrong.

    One in five said they need to connect to their host’s WiFi because they feel compelled to check their emails.

    In fact the study found the average Brit can go just 36 minutes after arriving at someone’s home before the temptation to check emails and social media overwhelms them.

    One in ten admitted feeling compelled to check social media, according to the Virgin Media research.

    A further 23 per cent said they go online because there’s something on the internet they want to share with their host.

    And a quarter think being connected to the internet at all times has simply become a ‘habit’.

    A third of adults have visitors over at least once a week, with a tenth inviting guests round ‘most days’.

    Bad Boy Abarth.

    What Have We Got?

    We have here something we shouldn’t have. The Fiat 500 I had booked wasn’t ready, so Tom at FCA offered me the Abarth 595 Competizione. I pondered if I could find more words for another brutal 500 Abarth. We’ve had the 695 Biposto and the 595 Rivale and they don’t get any better than those two.

    It just so happens that I was able to find some words for this model. A model that left me in a bit of a predicament.
    Driving

    From turning the key and switching it on, to arriving at your destination and switching it off, both you and the surrounding area will know of your departure and arrival. The exhaust note from the Monza quad tailpipes of this 1.4 180 hp turbo engine bark and growl their intention.

    And driving is what this car is all about. As for driving aids, you get reverses parking sensors. No frontal crash mitigation, no radar, no auto dip/full beam headlights, no cruise control. You are in total control. What you do is down to you. You literally are at one with the machine.

    Inside

    The interior of the Competizione is taken over by supportive cloth and suede covered Sabelt seats. You can tell they were not designed for the 595. The backrest adjuster is so close to the door that you have to open it to adjust.

    The suede on steering wheel and binnacle was a nice touch. Shame then about the rather drab grey plastic of the dashboard and door cards. You feel a bit of body colour would add to a stripped out racy interior.

     

    Living With It

    Let us forget about practicalities here. The rear seat is no more than a padded parcel shelf and the boot is OK for a car of this size. You do however get climate control and a rather good thumping Beats Hi-Fi.

    So let’s look at living with it as a driving machine. Here is where it excels. The ride is hard, leading to even harder, depending on the road surface. And this is a fun element because with the wide 205/40 tyres on 17” alloys, it tends to tramline quite a lot and this is exaggerated on hard acceleration where the steering wheel fights with torque steer. Hit the TTC button (Torque Transfer Control) and it will put the power to either front wheel with the most grip, and it makes it quite riotous.

    Add that to the power of the engine and the lightning speed it responds to inputs from the loud pedal, and you soon find yourself behind the wheel of a car that you can exploit its high levels of adhesion. It will understeer momentarily until the TTC kicks in and then you find you are flicking it around with gusto.

    The Verdict

    You have to LOVE this car a lot to want one. As an everyday proposition, I can’t really recommend it. It’s not a bad car, quite the contrary, it’s just that it is ‘on the go’ all the time, sport mode on or off. As a weekend toy, you won’t find much better.

    In many ways, the 595 Competizione is the bad boy of the Abarth range. The adrenaline-fuelled addiction borders on lustful cravings and coercion. It’ll lead you into a secluded carpark, shove its hands down your pants, make you do things you didn’t want to do and then leave you wanting more.

    We’re off for a cigarette now. I don’t smoke but I need to gather my senses. I’m flustered and wasted!

    Armistead Maupin‘s Tales Of The City is coming back to life thanks to Netflix, who are giving us a 10 episode series launching on the 7th June 2019.

    The show’s original run was made into a miniseries for Channel 4 and was first broadcast in 1993. The very first mini-series had just six episodes, so the brand new production by Netflix actually adds 4 new episodes to the show.

    Dame Vera Baird’s support for LGBT+ communities recognised by award short-list

    Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Dame Vera Baird’s long-standing support for the region’s LGBT+ community, has been recognised as she is named as an awards ceremony finalist.

    Celebrating the positive contributions made by individuals, organisations and groups, the LGBTQ North East Awards have named Dame Vera in the short-list to receive the ‘Ally of the Year’ accolade.

    Dame Vera is known as a vocal supporter of LGBT+ rights, championing inclusion and understanding for all.

    Her support has included providing funding to train advocates to engage with the police and the criminal justice system to raise awareness of LGBTQ issues. This has involved training officers on the impact of LGBT+ hate crime, and to help sign-post victims to support services.

    The OPCC continues to hold regular LGBT+ advisory sessions to hear the views of the LGBT+ communities on how Northumbria Police engages well with the community and where further improvements can be made.

    Commenting on her award nomination, Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Dame Vera Baird QC, said, “I’m delighted to have been shortlisted for this award. I’m proud to be considered, alongside other fantastic people, as a voice that represents our LGBTQ communities. Together, we’re bringing issues that matter to the forefront and pushing for positive change – I wish all nominees the best of luck.”

  • TV REVIEW | Rupaul’s Drag Race season 11 episode 6: Drag Olympics

    This week the theme was “sport” and the Olympics. Not words you expect to hear in Drag Race, but the Sport was Jane Fonda based and the Olympics turned out to be in fact “The Olympics of Drag”, so any worry soon disappeared.

    For the mini-challenge, we were introduced to a drag friend of Ru’s: Love Connie, who led the queens through a vigorous and funny retro aerobics challenge. For those of you who don’t know: Connie is a rather famous queen, having starred in movies like Legally Blonde. She was also hilarious.

    Winners of the challenge were Plastique Tiara and A’Keria C. Davenport who were told to select teams for the Drag Olympics. At the end of the selections, the queens were split evenly into two teams: those who could move and those who … couldn’t …

    Over to rehearsals of an intricate choreography based on the history of ballroom culture. This is where storylines came into play.

    Yvie Oddly who pushes through the pain because her time is limited: her illness will progress over the years and she knows she may very well end up in a wheelchair (though she knows that still won’t stop her performing.)

    There was also the Scarlet Envy story: most of the queens are looking down on her and seemed gleeful about her struggling with dancing.

    Vanjie is starting to feel depressed and is a lot more subdued. Fighting through tears she explains she feels she isn’t presenting her best self and letting Rupaul down.

    We also saw Plastique Tiara a bit more involved in it all, in Untucked she was actually part of a fight.

    Silky accused her of looking down on her and other queens. This because Ariel Versace left some wigs and hair at her (Plastique’s) station which Silky and others took. Plastique knew it was meant for her but said it didn’t matter as the other queens needed it more. Silky saw that as an insult and claimed Plastique couldn’t know the hair was for her. Ariel confirmed on Twitter that yes is was for Plastique.

    Okay, the Olympics themselves were fabulous with the teams dancing to remixes of Drag Race quotes past. The only cloud over this was poor Yvie’s ankle rolling, still, it was a joy to see Brook Lynn swoop in to carry her so she could take part in the finale.

    The Runway this week was all about gold. Most memorable being Yvie, who used her injury to her advantage.

    The team featuring the best dancers naturally won, with team leader A’keria winning overall.

    Then a sad moment where the losing team all deciding to throw Scarlet under the bus, which saw her end up in the bottom two at a disadvantage.

    Second-bottom two entree was once again Ra’Jah, who miraculously survived again despite Scarlet’s lip-sync being more original and entertaining. This result caused quite the stir on the internet.

    So that’s it for this belated review, hopefully back to normal next week!!

    Yes, Robert Rinder, the star of ITV’s daytime courtroom show Judge Rinder is in fact gay. He married his partner Seth Cumming, a political adviser to former Chancellor, turned Evening Standard editor George Osborne, in a beautiful ceremony in Ibiza in July 2013. The ceremony was officiated by his friend and actor Benedict Cumberbatch at the stunning location. The couple were married for over four years before they parted ways in 2018.

     

    His business buddy and former GAYUK cover star Ivan Massow was at the wedding who shared these pictures of Robert and Seth getting married. Actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who is a legally ordained minister can be seen taking control of the cliff top ceremony which took place at the Hacienda Hotel on the sunny party island of Ibiza.

     

     

    Divorced

    Sadly the pair split in 2018 after 4 years of marriage, although the couple were together for 11 years in total. They announced their split in January 2018. No third parties are believed to be involved in the “amicable” split.
