  • 5 Ways To Achieve In 2016

5 Ways To Achieve In 2016

Can you believe another year has gone by and 2016 is upon us? The year seems to have flown by, but right now it’s the perfect time for reflection. How was your 2015?

As one year ends and another begins, many people’s attentions turn to what they’d like to achieve over the coming months. The dawn of a New Year is the perfect time to introduce a new you to the world, or so we think. With so much focus on resolutions and what we should be achieving in 2016, here is my guide to surviving the pressures of New Year and making sure you achieve the things you want to.

I remember reading somewhere ages ago that around 80% of people don’t actually achieve their New Year resolutions. It makes me wonder why people bother if there is such a high failure rate, but of course many of us are pre-programmed to put huge amounts of pressure on ourselves and conform to what society tells us we should be doing. It doesn’t need to be that way though. If you want to survive New Year and achieve your goals in 2016, here’s how to go about it.

    1. A New Year doesn’t have to mean a new you!

What’s wrong with the old you? Nothing of course; you may just want to work on achieving a few goals. From my perspective that’s more of an improvement than a complete reinvention. Try telling yourself that the New Year will mean an improved you rather than a new you. Something as simple as considerately choosing the words you use can have a lasting impact on how you think and feel. Self-improvement is also a lot more achievable than a reinvention. We’re not all Madonna.

    2. Make sure that your goals for the year are SMART.

To give yourself a better chance of achieving, think about your goals and be sure that they are:• Specific – What exactly do you want to achieve? If you want to lose weight, how much weight? Be as specific as possible.

    • Measurable – How will you know when you have achieved your goal?

    • Achievable – Make sure your goal is realistic. For example, if you want to be cast as the next Bond girl opposite Daniel Craig, you may end up disappointed.

    • Relevant – Be sure that your goal is something you actually want or need to do.

    • Timely – Set yourself a deadline, but give yourself some breathing space. If you want to lose six stone in weight, don’t give yourself just six weeks to do it. Take your time, don’t put pressure on yourself, and you’ll soon get there.

    3. Be your own champion.

If you’ve noticed that there is something in your life that you would like to change or improve, acknowledge the fact that you’ve noticed it and thank yourself for it. By having that initial self-awareness you’re already taking a step in the right direction. By being your own champion you’re providing yourself with the best form of support you can receive; self-confidence and belief in your ability to achieve. You can now let your own positive thoughts and inner wisdom guide you to making the positive change or improving that certain something about you or your life. If you’re planning on a resolution for 2016, make sure you’re not too hard on yourself and don’t judge yourself if you don’t achieve instant results. Tell yourself that you can do it and let those words become your belief. That belief then becomes action, which leads to you achieving.

    4. If you’re happy with your life and don’t feel you need any self-improvement, don’t bother.

That’s right, I did just say that. If you’re ok with where your life is at and how you are within that life, why change anything? If you’re happy to continue with the way things are then I say carry on. If a tendency towards alcoholic beverages and the eating of cake is something you enjoy, why give it up? Don’t feel you actually have to make New Year resolutions or do anything revolving around self-improvement in January just because it’s what we’re supposed to do. Which leads me to my final point…

    5. Do what makes you happy.

As New Year arrives we’re fed images and articles about what we should be doing to improve ourselves and what our resolutions should be. My advice to you is not to pay attention to any of it. You will know in your mind and in your heart what it is you feel you need to achieve. You will realise for yourself what the positive changes you need in your life are. Once you know what you want and need to do, create an action plan and get going with it. You’ll end up happier and more likely to achieve your goals this way, as you’ll be subscribing to what you want to do rather than what we’re told we should do.
I wish you a very happy and prosperous New Year.

  • LEGAL CLINIC: Renters What Are Your Rights

It is a fact of modern life – a vast majority of us rent our accommodation. This is the first in a series of articles dealing with your rights as a renter. This week we deal with retaliatory evictions.

One of the worst aspects of renting is the lack of stability – private landlords can evict you for no reason. All they have to do is give you two months’ notice (although there are strict rules as to the date on which the notice should expire).

Most people would agree that a landlord should be able to evict a tenant when there is unpaid rent, or where the tenant is trashing the property. However, some landlords will evict you on unreasonable grounds. They may try to evict you because you have complained about the property being in a poor state of disrepair. Or they may decide to do so because you are LGBT.

    Complaining about the property

Some landlords may decide to evict a tenant if he or she complains about the state of the rented property. Here we are putting ups with dodgy boilers, out of date gas certificates and missing smoke alarms (which are now required by law in rented properties) because we are afraid we may be evicted if we complain. It also means that landlords evict tenants and get new ones in, rather than solving serious faults with the property.

All that changed on 1st October 2015. Now, a landlord’s ability to evict you for making a complaint about a “hazard” at your rented property is restricted. In order to obtain this protection, you need to involve your local council. The first method is easy – complain to your local council, and if they tell the landlord to rectify the situation then the landlord cannot serve you with an eviction notice (called a section 21 notice) until six months later. That gives you the right to stay for at least eight months (the six month period plus the legally required two month notice period) in the property, from the day that the council complains to your landlord.

However, you may think it makes more sense just to write to the landlord to complain. If you do this and the landlord attempts to evict you as a result, you will need to inform the local council who should, if they agree that the property is in need of repair, tell the landlord to rectify the issue. This then gives you protection against retaliatory eviction.

    LGBT tenants

It is disappointing for LGBT renters that there is no framework to prevent retaliatory eviction as a result of a landlord discovering that his renters are LGBT. It is illegal for a landlord to discriminate against someone for being LGBT when initially renting out property (unless it is a lodger in the landlord’s home), but this does not, it seems, apply once an LGBT tenant has moved in.

However, most landlords are far more concerned with getting regular rent payments than with gender identity, sexual orientation or ethnicity, so once you are in situ this is unlikely to be an issue. A landlord can still evict you if you fall into rent arrears and cannot repay them before he gets to court. But if you stay up to date with rent and comply with your tenancy agreement, the landlord will probably ignore any personal gripes he may have about your actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity, and leave you to enjoy your home in peace.

  • PROBLEM AUNTY: Should I Ask Him To Marry Me At Christmas?

A reader asks if you should ever propose at Christmas… Aunty’s not impressed.

    Aunty,

After how many years should you propose to your man at Christmas?

    Rob, Dundee

    Dear Rob,

Never. Christmas can be depressing enough without someone telling you they want to spend the rest of their life with you. Till death do us part. Forgoing all others? Bugger off. Buy him a gift he’ll really want, like a Playstation 4.8 or whatever the gamers are playing these days.

I may be without festive cheer at the moment readers as I sit here watching melted snow fall from the sky. Reminding me of years past when I once was a blushing bride. It’s true. Literally hours of planning in my local boozer had gone into the big day. Then, that Christmas Eve, when the church had been decorated to await our arrival, the bells slightly ringing in the breeze and a moist quiver coming over me, he told me. Told me that he had a secret and he couldn’t keep it from me any longer.

He started tugging away at a wig piece whilst telling me he’s a distant relative of Noddy Holder. This hairy monster was revealed before me and I screamed. Ran out into the pouring rain, casting aside my headdress and flicking my fag ash over passing carollers. I had to leave readers. Imagine the children. My stunning good looks and his hairy elf like existence. It was an act of mercy for the un-conceived. A Christmas miracle if you will. No woman should ever have to go through labour thinking she’s giving birth to an old sheep poking out arse first. So I urge you. Whilst you’re enjoying a few festive tipples, don’t go offering folk your hand in marriage for a free round of vodka-Babychams. Glazed eyes are never best to say “I do” through.

In case I don’t see you beforehand in Chariots, have a wonderful Christmas and New Year. xx
