It’s not all gay men, but, as the documentary tells us, it’s but a few who go on drug binges, coupled with lots of unsafe sex, that last all weekend. And it’s these men who are more than likely to become infected with HIV.
We meet several of these men. One of the first is Dick, who is not shy to tell us about his sexual exploits, while on drugs, and freely admits that he’s just taken drugs before the camera crew arrives (a couple of the guys interviewed admit to this). We also meet clean cut Simon, a well-educated man who happens to be a geneticist. He’s had a hard time beating the temptation to take part in drugs and unsafe sex. He also admits that he’s HIV+, but he’s also a denialist who doesn’t believe that he’s got it. We then meet Enrique, a 30-something good looking Spanish man who says he was a commercial banker for 10 years but lost everything because of his chemicals habit.
After losing pretty much everything, including his job, he resorted to prostitution to make money. More importantly, we meet David Stuart, Substance Use Lead, GUM/HIV Manager at Soho’s 56 Dean Street Clinic. We see his discussions with Simon, who he tells to try to go a week, and two weeks, then another without taking drugs. Stuart is the voice of reason in ‘Chemsex.’ He’s there as an advisor, and also as a friend, to many of his patients. Stuart bluntly says in the film that him and a friend used to regularly do cocaine while he was hooked up to a IV drip while he was close to death with an HIV illness many years ago. No doubt his experience with both HIV and drugs enables him to relate to his patients at the clinic. And his program at the Clinic is one of its kind and is being used as a model for clinics in the country.
It’s a disturbing documentary. Not only after hearing about these men’s behaviour but also to digest the fact that there are organised private parties for men who want to combine unsafe sex and various types of drugs. We meet one party organiser who opens up his home to the cameras, and we see the men who are there, engaging in unsafe sex all around the house, with most of them openly taking drugs, mostly provided by the host.
Of the estimated 107,800 people living in the UK with HIV, 24% are undiagnosed and possibly spreading the virus. And men who have sex with men have the highest risk of infection in the UK and, in 2013, they accounted for 54% of new diagnoses. One in 11 gay men in London is living with HIV. And a record high of 3,360 gay men were diagnosed with HIV in 2014. It’s statistics like these that make you wonder why gay men partake in drugs and unsafe safe, with Chemsex being the term for this. Statistics in a chemsex study from 2014 by 56 Dean Street Clinic showed that 3,000 gay men accessing the clinic each month are using recreational drugs, though not necessarily wishing to address their drug use. 100 new gay men access specific ChemSex support each month; 70% of these reported no ‘chem-free’ sex in previous six months while 98% had never accessed statutory drug use support.

Speaking exclusively to THEGAYUK former X FACTOR star Janet Devlin, who is currently promoting her Christmas EP, December Daze, has spoken out about the lack of bisexual visibility in mainstream media.
The singer, from Northern Ireland, who came out on ASK.fm in 2013 as bisexual, said,
“If you look at the media there’s no such thing as someone who’s bisexual, because it’s very black or white, you’re either gay or your straight.”
She went on to joke,
“What’s the difference between a unicorn and a bisexual? One of them is actually portrayed in the media.”
Speaking about her brand new EP, Janet said,
“I’m actually really excited this year, I’m not going to lie. Probably the most excited I’ve been about Christmas since I was a toddler.
“The whole point of me making the EP was to try and make myself like Christmas, so I definitely think I’ve achieved that. Every other year I’ve been so grinchy about it, this year. I’m just so pumped about it.”

Azealia Banks, who is known to take to social media to call gay men faggots has been blasted by Drag Race star Michelle Visage who said the rapper needed to check her attitude and stop using the word.
Speaking to THEGAYUK in the latest issue, Visage said,
“All of my gay friends call each other the ‘F’ word.
“I don’t, and she being a female shouldn’t. It’s wrong and it’s offensive.
“If she were a gay man and said it with the same venom it would still be offensive.”
She added,
“I wish her well but I don’t know what she’s doing with that attitude.”
Banks is well known for her homophobic language towards gay men and most notably Perez Hilton and often defended her choice of words
In tweets she sent last year she claimed that gay men needed to “check” themselves, saying,
‘Gay men be saying the most misogynist sh*t, but as soon as you call them a f*ggot they wanna get upset.
‘Somebody gotta check these f*ggots man. I don’t give a f*ck!! NO MAN Is going challenge my femininity. It’s not happening.
‘Gay men can call you a bitch, and talk about YA hair and YA nails, but as soon as you call them a f*ggot, all sh*t breaks loose’
Recently Banks hurled homophobic abuse at a Delta flight attendant after he stepped into end a scuffle between the rapper and other passengers.
A white glove bottom is a guy who won’t bottom (be penetrated by another guy) unless he’s completely sure he’s completely clean if you get our drift. So basically he’s the type who will most probably douche or use an enema before penetration to ensure there’s no mess… ever.

The F in the LGBTF initialism stands for “friends” sometimes also known as Allies – although Allies might have a little more activism element to them. Friends are those people who don’t identify as being Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender but want to be supportive of the LGBT rights movement.
It’s not that common to see LGBTF and is a relatively new addition to the LGBT initialism. There has been criticism of the term with some asserting that friends or allies do not need to have a letter in the LGBT initialism.

Of course, there is always the counter argument, that there is a beauty in its brutality, that it is as much a mental contest as a physical one. And certainly as a business, it can draw crowds and money. The richest prizefight of all time was held in Las Vegas in May this year between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao, with prize money of an estimated $200 million. And that’s before we even stop to think about the hundreds of millions the TV rights for the big fights went for.
As a sport it thrives on big characters to bring the big cash in. And controversy. But over the last couple of decades, even die-hard boxing fans have had their patience tested. The confusing and fractured competitive landscape created by having four sanctioning organisations, with no single governing body, allegations of greed and corruption, too few household names, and growing competition from mixed martial arts such as UFC have taken their toll.
The lack of big names, with a few exceptions, has seen average TV revenues decline. For example, in the UK declining viewing figures versus expensive television rights has meant that boxing has very rarely been shown on terrestrial television in the past few years.
Plus of course, there are the frequent calls for boxing to be banned due to the risk of severe injury or fatalities during a fight. It is a sport that often finds itself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
And now we have Tyson Fury. The new heavyweight champion. Certainly, he looks presentable enough on the poster to keep the sponsors happy and won the world title after going in as the underdog against Wladimir Klitschko. So far, so Rocky. But then there is the homophobia and bigotry.

Here’s the thing that all professional boxers have in common; unshakeable self-belief. So while Fury and his people have retreated into public relations disaster retreat mode and claimed, predictably, he was misquoted, this is a sportsman that has made the leap from the back page to the subject of opinion pieces like this one and dominated social media.
The petition to remove Tyson Fury from the nominees for this year’s BBC Sports Personality of The Year has been widely publicised in the past few days. And I have the feeling that Fury’s management are secretly delighted. Because guess what? Now everyone knows the name of the new world champion.
So what if he’s been widely derided as a homophobe? Boxing thrives on controversy and now with his bad boy credentials turned up to the max, Fury can safely go into his next fight as the kind of edgy, divisive figure that boxing has long thrived on. It may be a cynical view but I suspect that Fury and his team will not be too upset if the BBC bow to public pressure and strike his name from he ballot. Because the increased public profile and the new status as a hate figure is exactly what promoters and TV networks will pay the big bucks for.
He has his views which I’m fairly sure are not shared by the vast majority of boxing fans. The truth is that now his infamy has grown to a point where being a hate figure actually helps his career. Because who doesn’t want to see the villain get taught a lesson by the next challenger that comes along? By tapping into the public desire to see him get what’s coming to him, Fury will potentially be bigger box office and make a hell of a lot more dollars.
Yes, Tyson Fury should not be considered for the title of Sports Personality of The Year. He is guilty of nothing less than hate speech and the BBC should never be seen to endorse that. The sad thing is that for Fury, the storm will only push his price up. He’s not running for public office. His job is punching people for cash. And to earn the big money for that, political correctness is not in the job description.
