These are the home improvements Brits are making to try to cut their energy bills

Replacing the roof, upgrading to a modern boiler, installing cavity wall insulation and getting a smart meter are among the ways Brits want to try to cut their energy bills, a study has found.

    ri / Pixabay

A poll of 2,000 adults found more than half long for a new roof to make their home more efficient while another 53 per want to replace their ageing boiler with a newer model.

Four in 10 want underfloor heating, and another 29 percent would love some kind of energy storage system in place.

And 44 percent of people who don’t already have a smart meter want to get one within the next few months to boost their home’s green credentials.

To celebrate Big Energy Saving Week, property guru Phil Spencer spoke about the importance of ‘going green’ in the home.

He said, “As a long-time supporter of taking steps to help the environment, it’s great to see a growing awareness of the importance of making your property energy efficient.

“It’s also starting to have an impact on the price of the property. You don’t need a small fortune to start making effective changes though.

“Installing draught proofing to stop heat escaping outside the house, switching to energy saving lightbulbs and getting a smart meter from your energy supplier to keep track of the energy you’re using are all simple, and low-cost ways to cut down on your usage, and contribute to a cleaner, greener, smarter Britain.”

The top most common ‘green’ items homes already have installed include energy saving bulbs, double glazing, and an ultra-efficient shower head.

One in five have also installed specialist draught proofing around doors and windows.

The research also found millennials put a higher value on making sure their home is energy efficient, as the most likely to pay a premium for a home which benefits the environment and reduces bills.

However, ‘Baby Boomers’ are actually more likely to have energy efficiency measures installed in their homes, with 84 per cent having energy-saving light bulbs installed, compared to 54 percent of those aged 18-24.

And more than three quarters of Baby Boomers have double glazing, compared to just 54 per cent of 18-24 year-olds.

To help you keep track of how much energy you are saving thanks to energy efficient measures, get a smart meter installed at no extra cost, by contacting your energy supplier or visit www.smartenergygb.org for more information.

  • Chris Crocker just started a debate on tipping in the US

Chris Crocker just started a debate on tipping in the US

    How much do you tip?

In the UK tipping in a restaurant is discretionary, but usually most people tip between 10 and 12.5 percent (sometimes that 12.5 percent is actually added on by the restaurant as an option, which you can ask to have removed, but most of us don’t).

In the USA however, tipping in restaurants is essential and it’s pretty steep in comparison to the British way of tipping. When eating out, you are expected to add a whopping 20 percent to your total bill, which can really add to your meal’s total.

Step in, Internet-turned-porn star, Chris Crocker, who opened the debate on tipping, posting a video of him giving a $40 tip on a $14 bill saying, “don’t complain about the tipping when it’s literally part of the dining experience, bitch, if you don’t want to tip, don’t dine the f**k out.

He continued, “We’re not living in Europe where their (servers) hourly pay is built into the situation,” before adding, “Waiters waitresses, bar tenders are juggeling college, children… they’re making $2 an hour, having to split their tips with their co-workers. If you’ve got a problem tipping, sit your ass at home bitch”.

    Minimum Wage

In the UK there is a minimum wage (£8.21 for adults over the age of 25 from April 2019) which employers must pay their wait staff, however in the US employers do not have to pay the $7.25 minimum wage to tipped staff and can go as low as $2.13 per hour, as long as tips equals at the minimum wage.

Well, the Internet came at the situation from all sides.

Man jailed jailed for homophobic and racist abuse at Brighton Pride

A man who was racist and homophobic towards people heading to Brighton Pride has been jailed for more than four years.

Ryan Brown was heading to Pride himself when he threatened to ‘knock a woman out’ and shouted racist and homophobic terms at train passengers.

The incident happened shortly after 5pm on Saturday 5 August 2017.

The 31-year-old from Crawley, West Sussex, resisted arrest in Brighton and had to be restrained by BTP officers.

In his pocket he had a large number of small bags containing MDMA.

He was found guilty of possessing class A drugs with intent to supply and causing fear of violence through racially charged and homophobic language.

Brown was also sentenced at the same time for a separate matter which included affray, criminal damage, and assault with intent to resist arrest which he pleaded guilty to in December 2018.

He was jailed for four years and six months at Hove Crown Court on Thursday 10 January.

British Transport Police DC Imogen Sweeney said, “I would like to thank the victim in this case. She was subjected to a frightening ordeal by Brown, receiving homophobic abuse and witnessing racist abuse.

“She has remained determined to pursue justice throughout this investigation and I have nothing but admiration and praise for her strength.

Brighton Pride celebrates diversity and equality, values that Brown clearly needs education in. I believe this sentence reflects the seriousness and particularly nasty nature of his offending on that day.”

You may remember Bradley as part of the Duo Bratavio… Well he’s back and proving that he can really sing

Singing Leona Lewis’s “Run” is a challenge for even the most accomplished singer, but former Bratavio singer, Bradley Hunt seems to make light work of the epic ballad, in his latest YouTube video.

His fans were quick to agree that the singer had come along way since his time on X Factor in 2016. When the duo first appeared on the scene in 2016 they caused controversy for judge Louis Walsh, who was bombarded with homophobic comments when he put them through to the live shows, with many dismissing the group as a “novelty act”.

BRADLEY HUNT: Giving it his all on Leona Lewis’ hit “Run” which reached number 1 with in 2008.

In 2017 the pair who were as famous for their costumes as their epic public fall outs, said that they actually recieved the most homophobia from inside the gay communty.

Speaking on Simon Gross‘s YouTube The Showbiz Show in 2017, the singing duo, revealed the negativity they’ve recieved from the gay community since they left the show.

The duo said that they never have trouble when they make appearances at straight clubs, but in gay clubs, they say that people snub them and that club-goers shout abuse at them. The pair even fear that they will get pelted with eggs.

However, since leaving the competition, Bradley hasn’t left music completely, in 2017 he released his rather catchy debut solo single, “Side Dish” which he was forced to clarify was not a dis song against his former partner, Ottavio Columbo.

Oh dear, it didn’t take long did it? Piers Morgan has lashed out over a report that a dad from Norway, is the “best dad” because he dressed up as Elsa from Frozen for his son.

Taking to Twitter Piers questioned why the dad, Ørjan Burøe, should be considered any more of a “best dad” than one who takes his son to a football match.

The story was first reported on CBS’s The UpLift website, and shows the Norwegian dad dancing in a full Elsa costume to the hit song from Frozen, ‘Let It Go’ along with his son, who is also dressed as Elsa – because his four-year-old son is the “biggest fan of Elsa”.

Ørjan Burøe said that it was “important to embarrass yourself and let it go,” The video has been watched millions of time on social media.

Piers, however, couldn’t let the video pass without making comment, writing, “Why does this make him any more ‘BEST DAD’ then [sic] one who plays football with his son? Ridiculous.”

It didn’t take long for reaction to Piers’ statement to come in thick and fast, with one user saying, “A fathers love, should never be ridiculed. No matter the circumstances”, while another added, “Creative and make sure his son is happy and enjoying himself.”

Another said, “Because not all young boys want to play football and a lot of stupid uneducated people will look down at this and make stupid comments such as “encouraging him to become gay”.

One user said that it was important to break down stereotypes adding, “I’d like to think it’s a step forward in breaking down stereotypes, and why not put positive energy out into the world rather than twist the words to suit your own agenda”.

Jason Gardiner just ripped Gemma Collins a new one

Mr Nasty took a swipe at Gemma Collins and he didn’t hold back

Living up to his “Mr Nasty” credentials, Dancing On Ice judge Jason Gardiner seemed to slam Gemma Collins for being “mediocre” and described her performance on the ITV show last week as “painful”.

Speaking to The Sun the Aussie theatre producer said, “When I grew up people were bl**dy good at what they did. They were exceptional at something, so you were inspired by people on TV.

“Now we celebrate mediocre in this country. That, it seems, has become the new celebrity.”

He also admitted that he had never seen The Only Way Is Essex, saying that he was “too busy” and that life was “too short” and so he had no idea who the GC was.

He says he was at first excited to see her performance with Gemma’s own self declared hype, saying, “I had heard the hype from her own mouth, how amazing she is and how she’s better than Beyonce.

“I thought, ‘Wow, wonderful, I can’t wait’, I’ve never had anyone that confident on the show at week one”

Paying particular attention to last week’s routine, where Gemma Collins was dressed from head to toe in Gold he described her routine as painful and “uncomfortable” he said,

“I was so excited. But then she came out and did what can only be described as one of the most painful routines I’ve ever had to sit through because it looked so uncomfortable.”

    Oooh errr.

WATCH the terrifying anti-gay, acid attack on London’s streets

Police have released horrifying footage of an unprovoked acid attack on men near one of east-London’s most popular LGBT+ venues

A group of men who launched an unprovoked attack, which resulted in a number of people being sprayed with a noxious substance, on the streets of London have been sentenced. Three victims were left with acid burns to their bodies close to a popular gay venue in Hackney, in May 2018. Last week, nine men have been sentenced to lengthy spells in prison for their parts in the attack.

    Watch the terrifying attack below;

Who were the men who received jail time for their part in the attack?

Huseyin Onel, 24 (30.03.94) of no fixed abode, but from the Hackney area, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for applying a noxious substance causing grievous bodily harm (GBH), plus an additional three years on extended licence. Onel was sentenced to nine years each for six counts of casting a noxious substance and three years for violent disorder to run concurrently.

Mehmet Tekagac, 30 (03.09.88) of Kenworthy Road, E9 was sentenced to 14-and-a-half years in prison for applying a noxious substance causing GBH, plus an additional three years on extended licence. To run concurrently, Tekagac was sentenced to eight years for robbery and three years for violent disorder.

Onur Ardic, 27 (02.11.91) of Frampton Park Road, E9 was sentenced to 14 years in prison for applying a noxious substance causing GBH plus three years on extended licence. He was also sentenced to three years for violent disorder to run concurrently.

Guven Ulas, 20 (21.12.98) of Pultney Street, N1, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for violent disorder.

Mustafa Kiziltan, 30 (10.09.88) of no fixed abode, but from the Hackney area, was sentenced to a total of three years months in prison – 27 months for violent disorder and nine months for dangerous driving. He was also sentenced to three months for failing to stop, this will run concurrently.

Serkan Kiziltan, 22 (03.11.96) of Well Street, E9, was sentenced to 18 months for violent disorder.

Umit Kaygisiz, 21 (26.12.97) of Orsman Road, N1, was sentenced to a total of 28 months in prison for violent disorder and attempting to convey a prohibited item into prison (namely a mobile phone).

Yasam Erdogan, 24 (24.11.94) of Nightingale Road, N1, was sentenced to 18 months for violent disorder, suspended for two years.

Turgut Adakan, 23 (20.06.95) of Roman Road, E6, was sentenced to 18 months for violent disorder, suspended for two years.

All nine were sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court on Thursday, 17 January.

The group launched a ferocious attack

The incident unfolded at approximately 05:15hrs on 5 May 2018, when a verbal altercation began between an unidentified male and Onur Ardic who was part a group of nine men who were sitting in cars on Alvington Crescent in Hackney.

The unidentified male went to speak to Ardic and was quickly surrounded by the group before Mustafa Kiziltan punched him. En masse, the group launched a ferocious attack, punching and kicking the male for a sustained period.

A group of people who had left a nearby club attempted to intervene to stop the attack with one of them – a man in his 20s – filming the assault.

The suspect group took exception to this and attacked the man, kicking him to the ground and attempting to steal his phone. A number of this victim’s group went to their friend’s aid and a large brawl erupted.

During this, Huseyin Onel – a member of the suspect group – entered one of the cars and was seen to exit a couple of seconds later carrying a white bottle. He used this bottle to spray a noxious substance, in the faces of a number of people.

On realising the escalation of events, a number of the victim’s group began to run from the scene but Onel calmly targeted them, spraying liquid at their faces as they attempted to flee.

Other members of the group – Mehmet Tekagac and Onur Ardic – were also involved in the corrosive substance attack on one of the group.

Meanwhile, the vicious assault continued on the victim who had filmed the initial assault and only ended when a bag containing his phone had been ripped from him.

He was left with a fractured eye socket and corrosive burns to his eye, with it initially believed his injuries would be life changing, but his recovery was described by doctors as ‘miraculous’.

    “They Run Hackney”

The suspects then got into three cars and drove from the scene, shouting homophobic comments at members of the group, and that they ‘run Hackney’.

Officers from Hackney, working alongside a crime scene examiner (CSE) attended the scene and began to collate evidence and secure CCTV that captured the vast majority of the attacks.

Officers reviewed the footage and were able to identify the majority of the suspects. They were assisted by the CSE and Met’s Fingerprint Bureau, who were able to confirm which suspects had been holding the white bottle containing the noxious substance, and who had been attacking the unknown victim, which helped strengthen the case that secured these convictions.

Over a four-month period, all nine suspects were identified, arrested and charged.

    “Truly shocking”

Detective Constable David Leitner, of the Central East Command Unit, led the investigation. He said: “Nine violent and dangerous men have been removed from London’s streets today and will now spend a lengthy time locked up in prison.

“The level of violence used in this attack, coupled with the speed that this incident escalated, are truly shocking.

“A group of people who were enjoying themselves at the end of a night out were subjected to a sustained and relentless wave of violence including the use of a corrosive substance – because they acted as good Samaritans to help a male being subjected to a vicious assault.

“The original victim who was attacked by the group has never been traced but I hope he, and all those who were set upon by this violent group of individuals, will take some comfort from the fact that this group has been convicted.”

At Wood Green Crown Court on 21 November 2018, three of the group were found guilty as follows:

Huseyin Onel was found guilty of eight counts of applying a corrosive fluid with intent and violent disorder.

Mehmet Tekagac was found guilty of applying a corrosive fluid with intent and robbery. He had earlier pleaded guilty to violent disorder.

Onur Ardic was found guilty of applying a corrosive substance with intent. He had earlier pleaded guilty to violent disorder.

The six other men earlier pleaded guilty at Wood Green Crown Court to violent disorder.

Jameela Jamil called out a cosmetic company and they actually listened

The Good Place star called out cosmetics company Avon for a “gross abuse of the body positive movement” and they listened and apologised.

Well known for her campaigning on body positivity issues, Jameela Jamil recently took cosmetic giant Avon to task over what she called “gross abuse” with some of their advertising.

Jameela was criticising the Avon #NakedProof campaign which focussed on cellulite on women’s thighs. One of the main images had the caption, “dimples are cute on your face, not on your thighs”.

Railing against the campaign, Jameela wrote, “And yet EVERYONE has dimples on their thighs, I do, you do, and the CLOWNS at @Avon_UK certainly do.

    Embed from Getty Images

She then called upon the cosmetics giant to “Stop shaming women about age, gravity and cellulite” adding, “they’re inevitable, completely normal things. To make us fear them and try to “fix” them, is to literally set us up for failure”

She said that Avon, or indeed any other publication should be ashamed to run this sort of “abusive advertising” adding, “My timeline is full of women saying adverts like these are why they are afraid to be naked in front of lovers, or to wear a swimsuit. You are being robbed of your money and self-esteem.”

Avon UK wiped their hands clean of the campaign saying, “Naked Proof is not an Avon UK Campaign and will not be featured in any of our materials.”

However, AvonInsider, the official account for the US arm of the company did eventually come back to star saying it had “missed the mark” with its messaging, saying, “We have removed this messaging from all future marketing materials. We fully support our community in loving their bodies and feel confident in their own skin.”

The actor, thanked the company, calling their reply “progress” before saying, “But also @AvonInsider please don’t promote a brand that markets itself as “Naked Proof” again. None of us need to be told that anything should stop us from feeling good naked.

“It’s the most natural thing. There is nothing wrong with scars and marks and bumps. We are human.”

  • Did you know that China has banned depictions of gay people on TV?

Did you know that China has banned depictions of gay people on TV?

The world’s most populated country has, since 2016, banned depictions of gay people on Chinese TV.

Ben Mitchell And Paul Coker kiss
Scenes like this kiss in EastEnders between two men would be banned in China. CREDIT: (C) BBC Kieron McCarron

China has a raft of strict regulations on what its people can see, download and transmit. Even porn is forbidden in the country and its citizens have been offered money, lots of it, for turning in to the authorities those who are suspected of viewing or hosting the content.

However, even darker and more problematic is that the depiction of gay people is forbidden and the language used in that enforcement is incredibly worrying. In fact the ruling saying that content that ‘exaggerates dark side of society’ is banned. This includes homosexuality, but also adultery, earrings on males and even, yes, cleavage.

In fact, it was reported that an earring was blurred on a reality TV show because the contestant, Jing Boran, is male.

    “Vulgar and Immoral”

Even the relationship and first gay kiss in Star Trek between Lt. Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Chief Medical Officer Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) would be banned in China.

The Chinese government’s ban is part of a crackdown on “vulgar, immoral and unhealthy content” and was first reported in 2016 and is nothing more than a government-backed, systematic cleansing of gay people from society.

The government outlines that TV shows shall not “show abnormal sexual relationships and behaviours, such as incest, same-sex relationships, sexual perversion, sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual violence, and so on.”

This ban, according to the Guardian includes smoking, drinking, adultery, sexually suggestive clothing, even reincarnation.

This clampdown on content has increased since Xi Jinping, China’s president, came into power in 2012.

This means that content readily available in many countries across the globe that incorporate same-sex relationships would be forbidden. In fact, streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and the BBC’s iPlayer are not available to view in China.

At a time when relationships that stray away from the normative, like the same-sex relationship in Netflix’s Star Trek Discovery or even a same-sex kiss in EastEnders may never actually be seen in China.

In April 2018, Sina Weibo, China’s largest social network said it would remove “homosexual” content from its platform. Sina Weibo said in a statement that it had begun a “clean-up campaign” to remove “illegal” content, including “manga and videos with pornographic implications, promoting violence or (related to) homosexuality”.

Weibo reversed its ban, but only after a huge backlash against the platform.
