  • 10 facts you probably didn’t know about Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury died on the 24th November in 1991. Today we celebrate his life with some great facts you may not know or may have forgotten.

    10. His real name was Farrokh Bulsara and he was born in Zanzibar. He had a wealthy childhood until he and his family had to flee a bloody revolution. His family are Parsees, followers of the Zorastrian religion whose ancestors came from Persia.

    9. He changed the lyrics of “One vision” to “fried chicken” to the last line when dared by his lover Jim Hutton. He sang it on every version since.

    8. Freddie was an accomplished ballet dancer, even performing with the royal ballet in 1979.

    7. Despite only revealing his illness days before he died, he dropped many hints about his failing health during his last 1986 tour, most famously in a brief speech before performing “Who Wants To Live Forever” at Wembley.

    6. By 1986 Queen were fed up with each other and took a break. In 1988 Freddie’s illness was the main reason to regroup and record albums The Miracle and Innuendo.

    5. Freddie wrote various songs for his cats: ‘All Dead, all dead’ was about the death of a beloved cat, while Delilah and Bijou were dedicated to the cats that kept him company during his last days. Meanwhile the song “Cool Cat” was about a man who reminded him of a cat. Freddie was a big cat lover and at one point owned up to ten cats. Freddie had portraits painted of his cats and called them daily when on tour.

    4. Freddie felt he performed at his best when he was unhappy in love, and seemed to seek out partner accordingly in his early years. Partner Bill Reid was the course of much heartbreak and fights: before one concert Reid bit Mercury’s hand so hard that it left teeth marks and bled profusely. Another fight left their hotel room with a layer of broken glass and plaster on the carpet. Showing that fights did not always led to great performances: one shouting match with Reid left Freddie so hoarse he could barely get his voice back in time to perform at Saturday Night Live.

When dating Tony Bastin Freddie became aware that he was seeing someone else behind his back. As a punishment, he flew him all the way over to the USA, met him up at the airport told him it was over and then put him on the next plane back to London that day. He also kept Bastin’s cat, Oscar.

    3. Freddie first met future duet partner David Bowie in the summer of 1970 when he co-managed a stall in Kensington Market, with Roger Taylor. Freddie tried to sell Bowie a pair of suede boots. While he tried them on Mercury quizzed him about the music business. David was very unhappy about the music industry at the time and asked Freddie, ‘Why would you want to get into this business?’

    2. Freddie helped Princess Diana disguise as a man so she could go to gay bars with him and his best friend Kenny Everett. The trio also loved watching “Golden Girls” together at the home of close friend Cleo Rocos. Says Cleo: “Kenny turned the sound down on the television and we improvised the voices, but with a much naughtier storyline. Kenny was Blanche, Diana was Dorothy, Freddie was Sophia and I was Rose – we were uncontrollable with laughter.”

    1. Freddie was guarded about his sexuality, but did at one point speak about his love for partner Jim Hutton. Saying: “I’m very happy with my relationship at the moment and I couldn’t ask for better. So now I’ve finally found a niche that I was looking for all my life.”

  • This American anti-gay group criticised two girls kissing and it spectacularly backfired

Anti-gay, ultra-conservative group, ForAmerica tried to shame NBC and Macy’s for showing two girls kissing in the annual Thanksgiving Parade and they got slammed by Twitter.

ForAmerica says its aim is to “reinvigorate” the public with the principles of exceptionalism: freedom, prosperity and virtue, but when they criticised broadcaster NBC and famous department store Macy’s on Twitter for showing a lesbian kiss, they got their asses handed to them.

The tax-exempt, not-for-profile organisations said that Macy’s and NBC had blindsided parents in order to push “their agenda” on them.

ForAmerica‘s original tweet was commented on over 8700 times, most of which were lambasting the organisation, while it received a meagre 1800 likes and under 500 retweets, at the time of publishing.

Many commentators used examples of current politics in the US to shame the organisations. User Stephen Spin wrote, “President cheats on wife w/porn star – OK! President constantly belittles & bullies others – OK! President defends murderers like Putin & MBS – OK! Nazi salutes – OK! Active shooter drills – OK! 2 adult females kissing – OMG, THE WORLD IS ENDING”

While Morgan Jon Fox reminded ForAmerica that “Millions of small children will grow up to be gay & have families,” before reminding ForAmerica that what they witness was “called love”

Many called for ForAmerica to reevaluate its morals

However, this user seemed to have the best suggestion yet:

  • This is the thing that’s ruining your sex life

This is the thing that’s ruining your sex life

A poll of 2,000 adults found the cold and dark winter months result in an increase in illnesses, a lower mood and an overall lack of motivation.

But millions also see their sex life suffer with almost one in twenty saying their libido nosedives during the winter.

Others also have less energy, struggle to wake up, have sore and achy joints and muscles and are more likely to consume unhealthy or sugary foods than in the summer months.

Dr Meg Arroll, a psychologist on behalf of wellbeing brand Healthspan, which commissioned the research, said: “This shows that many of us do feel down in the dumps when the weather turns colder and days get shorter.

“Some of this may be due to the lack of daylight and perceived unpleasantness of being out and about in the wind and rain.

“And of course, there are more coughs and colds during winter months which affect both how we feel physically and our mood.

“But the heartening aspect of this survey is that over a quarter of respondents state they take active steps to protect their health and wellbeing in winter.

“This is the key to good health as we may not be able to control the weather, but we can control how we think and feel and take action to improve our overall outlook.”

    Can’t face the cold

The study also found 46 per cent of Brits think winter is bad for their health and it really impacts on their appearance.

Forty-one per cent stated they are more affected by colds and flu during the winter months, while 31 per cent believe they suffer more from dry skin.

Three in 10 have less energy and feel more tired while 22 per cent believe they are more likely to gain weight than they are in the summer.

Almost six in 10 say their mood is generally lower in winter than at any other time of the year, with 66 per cent blaming the dark morning and evenings.

Another 64 percent put their bad mood down to the cold weather while 17 per cent say it’s because they always feel ill.

It also emerged the nation’s health takes a hit in the winter with half saying they are more likely to be ill during the season than any other time of year with around two colds and two days off work from September to February.

To add to this, 47 percent of Brits feel more motivated to exercise in the summer months, spending an average of four hours and 29 minutes in the gym. This drops to 3 hours and 20 minutes in the winter.

    It’s all the diet

Researchers from OnePoll also found 52 per cent see their diet change as they mover into the winter months.

Almost two-thirds turn to comfort food as the temperature drops, while 56 per cent eat less salad and 35 per cent consume more sugary treats. Others eat more fast food, less fruit and vegetables and drink less water.

But 27 per cent do take extra steps to safeguard their health and appearance during the winter months.

Half of those polled 50 per cent take health supplements and use extra moisturiser to combat dry skin, 33 per cent go to bed earlier, and 23 per cent try to improve their diet.

Dr Sarah Brewer, Healthspan Medical Director, said: “Diet should always come first, so focus on obtaining at least five-a-day fruit and veg for immune boosting vitamin C, plus two servings of oily fish per week for omega-3 and vitamin D.

“Clinical trials show that sucking zinc acetate lozenges significantly reduces symptoms of the common cold compared with placebo.

“Zinc acetate lozenges shortened the duration of nasal congestion by 37 per cent, scratchy throat by 33 per cent, hoarseness by 43 per cent and cough by 46 per cent.

“Sucking zinc acetate lozenges also shortened the duration of muscle aching by 54 per cent.

“Taking Zinc and Vitamin C tablets to prevent colds is also a popular strategy during winter months.”

  • Celebrity Big Brother star Rodrigo was offered a lot of money to remove ding dong

Celebrity Big Brother star Rodrigo was offered a lot of money to remove ding dong

Rodgrigo Alves could have had a lot of wong for his dong, except the offer was actually a cruel joke.

Celebrity Big Brother star, Rodrigo Alves AKA the human Ken Doll was made to believe that a film production company wanted him to remove his penis and offered over £3 million to complete the drastic cosmetic surgery, according to the Daily Mail. Although the star is not shy about having procedures done to his body, apparently lopping off his dick was a step too far, before finding out that whole situation was a stunt for an Italian stunt show called, Hyenas.

The prank show created an elaborate ruse, including hiring a fake producer to trick Rodgrio into thinking that a huge Hollywood studio wanted him for a starring role – that needed no visible genital outlines, just like the real Ken doll.

But Rodrigo wasn’t down for the surgery, despite the insane amount of money offered.

Rodgrio told the Daily Mail, “My well-being and dignity will always come first and I would not stand for that. I said no straight away but I completely believed it was real”

“I cannot be bought for any sum of money so I was not happy at all when they made the request.”

Rodrigo has spent in excess of $500,000 on plastic surgery in the last few years in order to get the perfect Peter Pan look.

The 35-year-old star has had 62 ops so far, in a bid to be “perfect” and delay the ageing process in order to be “Peter Pan young forever”.

In fact, he’s allegedly spent over $500,000 on surgeries in the last few years to complete his aim. Having his penis and testicles removed would have been the 63rd.

Earlier this year, the plastic surgery fanatic took part in Celebrity Big Brother but was removed from the house within days for poor behaviour. The show attracted a huge onslaught of complaints from viewers when Rodrigo used the N-Word repeatedly on the first night.

Following his exit, Rodrigo took to Instagram to say, “It was a great experience while in the #cbb house thank you all for the love and support. After @realmissnatalienunn Natalie left I started to think how I was getting seen by the public after making a language mistake while DRUNK. I am deeply sorry to have let the viewers down and my Fans now I just need to have some ice cream and rest and life goes on….”

However, Dan Osbourne revealed to The Sun, that there was an unaired incident, saying, “There was an incident in the house, it was just something inappropriate, I didn’t appreciate it.”

Marlene Dietrich has been called to duty – and lucky for us it’s in London.
Dietrich, star of many a stage and film, as well as many a front line during WWII, was a legend, was a humanitarian, and was perhaps one of the most famous women of the 20th Century. Now, for a second time this year, we can bathe in her presence, and voice, in a show called Dietrich Natural Duty: A One (Wo)man Show now playing at the almost gorgeous as Dietrich venue Wilton’s Music Hall.
In a stunning, shimmering, glittery beaded golden sequin dress, Dietrich (played to perfection by Peter Groom), takes us back to the time when she, in 1942, amidst the battlefields, turns her back at the country of her birth, Germany, and helps to rally, and excite, the troops. Through a mix of song, wit, curves, and a voice to die for, Dietrich Natural Duty is an irresistible and breathtaking show where Groom just about channels his inner and outer Dietrich to shear perfection. • Plane crash forced Paula Abdul to take SEVEN YEARS off from performing

Pop icon and former American Idol judge, Paula Abdul explains how it took her seven years to recover following a plane crash.

    ©-Jean_Nelson-Depositphotos

Paula Abdul was at the height of her fame when tragedy struck. In 1993, a small plane carrying her from St. Louis to Denver crashed. Unfortunately Paula wasn’t wearing her seatbelt, apparently, it snapped, at the time of impact.

Part of the plane went up in flames and the pop star was left with multiple injuries, which required an extended recovery period and many spinal surgeries.

Ms Abdul was known as much for her dancing and choreography as her singing. In fact, she was hired by the Janet Jackson to choreograph some of her hits.

The recovery from the crash meant that she was unable to continue her career in dance

“I had to disappear for seven years to recover from a plane crash”

Speaking with Vic Gerami for THEGAYUK.com, Ms Adbul said, “You know, at the height of my career, I had to disappear for seven years to recover from a plane crash. I was touring and it was toward the end of my tour, we were leaving St. Louis to go to Denver on a 7-seater private plane.

“I wasn’t wearing my seat-belt and we crash-landed and part of the plane went in flames. I sustained multiple injuries and had to have many surgeries and rehab. So I spent seven years getting better, than this show came along, American Idol. In fact, I had one of my surgeries while judging on American Idol”.

Writing for THEGAYUK.com Vic Gerami wrote, “It’s been thirty years since her first mega-hit, seven-time platinum album “Forever Your Girl” captured us, with singles such as “Straight Up”, “Forever Your Girl”, “Cold Hearted”, and “Opposites Attract.” But Paula was no stranger to the entertainment industry before becoming a mega-star. Her mother was a concert pianist and she studied ballet and jazz at a young age. While in college, she was a Los Angeles Lakers cheerleader, which led her to be discovered by the Jacksons. She was signed to do the choreography for the video to their single “Torture” and eventually several videos for Janet Jackson and various other artists”.

  • Southampton student union president resigns after 21,000 people sign petition for her to go

A student union president who threatened to remove or destroy a world war one memorial which depicts only white men has resigned from her position.

Over 21,000 people signed a petition calling for the resignation of Emily Dawes, after she wrote a Tweet in which she said she would remove a memorial mural painted by Sir William Rothenstein in 1916 to remember students who served in the war. It was presented to Southampton in 1959 by the artist’s son. The picture depicts a young soldier receiving his degree.

On Twitter Ms Dawes, who uses the pronouns, she and her, wrote, “Mark my words – we’re taking down the mural of white men in the uni Senate room, even if I have to paint over it myself.”

The student president had previously apologised for the remarks.

The petition, which was launched by Daniel Lake explains, “Emily Dawes, the University of Southampton University Student Union president is expected to make comments and suggestions on the subject.

“Dawes vowed to remove the wall in the university Senate room, threatening to vandalize it to the depicting ‘white men’.

The mural in fact of the young men who left Southampton University to fight during the First World War.

“Not only that, but it is a memorial to all those who died during the conflict. Dawes’ comments, fuelled by the simple fact that the men in the wall are white, are unacceptable and offensive to the vast majority of students who choose to support remembrance. Therefore, this is an unacceptable abuse of an elected position”

    “Best if I step down”

Writing about her decision to step down, Ms Dawes said, “After careful consideration I’ve decided that it’s best if I step down from my role. I sincerely apologise for the offence and disrespect caused by my earlier comments, which were misinformed. I acted impulsively and as such fully accept how careless and hurtful my words were.

“I’ve had a wonderful time as President and am sad to be leaving.  All my thanks go to everyone who has supported me throughout my Presidency, and I wish the team and the Union all the best.”

The university Tweeted,  that it respected “Emily’s decision and will continue to provide her with support.”

Adding, “The University will continue to work closely with the Students’ Union, the elected team and staff.”

Anne Hegerty, also known as the Governess on the game show, The Chase, might just be the runaway success in this year’s I’m A Celeb, but who is she and more importantly people want to know if she’s dating anyone or married. This is the new gay podcast you need to subscribe to

Strong language, time travel and gay men – what more could you possibly want from a podcast?

Jack and Jacob are two gay men, and met through working together as writers and comedians in London. Their mission statement was to create a podcast that was funny and entertaining with top quality comedy content, but also one that was unapologetically and joyfully gay.

The Hole Seekers is a podcast by and for the gay community, and a small contribution to the canon of LGBT+ entertainment. Jack and Jacob’s weekly adventures as time travellers are all narrated through a lens of their own perspectives and experiences as gay men, and each week sees them navigating their way through the world of love, sex and dating as gay men and proud members of the LGBT+ community.

Through frank conversation and comedy, Jack and Jacob hope to provide an affectionate, inclusive and humorous exploration at what being gay means to them, using the podcast to open that conversation up to the wider community and hopefully making people chuckle along the way.

Sliding in and out of holes is – as Jack and Jacob quickly discovered – a messy business that’s far better digested aurally. The podcast is, first and foremost, a comedy show and the focal point of each 30 minute episode is a long-form, on-the-spot improvised conversation between Jack and Jacob and their guest. Each guest takes the form of a character met by the boys after they’ve travelled through a hole in time, and is played by a different comedian every week. Before recording, Jack and Jacob do not know when or where in time each week’s hole will take them or who they’ll meet when they arrive at their destination.

  • THEATRE REVIEW | Briefs, Leicester Square Spiegeltent, London

THEATRE REVIEW | Briefs, Leicester Square Spiegeltent, London

    ★★★★★ | Briefs

The Briefs boys are back and they’re being extra naughty!

You know the boys – they are the burlesque troupe from Australia who, annually, bring us fun, frolics, and huge loads – of sexiness – to the Underbelly tent in the Southbank every summer season. Well this year they’re giving us a extra dose of themselves – they are putting on their act in Leicester Square!

Headlining two shows in the Leicester Square Spiegeltent (the first show at 7:30 and a second at 10:15), Briefs: Close Encounters take us into outer space with the sexy guys who wear all sorts of space attire (and luckily for the audience the attire comes off!) in a show that can be described as too sexy for space!

The cast, and pretty much the show, is very similar to their show at Underbelly – but the space theme is a twist in the right direction! The Briefs boys, led by fabulous emcee Fez Fa’anana, includes one of Australia’s leading circus showmen Captain Kidd; acrobat and clownish time-hopping rabbit Dale Woodbridge-Brown; superstar aerialist Thomas Worrell, defying gravity and tying himself in knots above the crowd; and the youngest member of Briefs, the loveable rogue and boy wonder Louis Biggs, as well as performance artist Harry Clayton-Wright.

They perform their circus skills, raucous comedy, and display their unique disrobing skills for the audience to enjoy. But stop press – the 10:15 p.m. show is even more racier, more raucous, with more genitalia on display, and isn’t that what the world needs now?

And after the 10:15 p.m. show the tent becomes a disco where you can dance and boogie with the stars of the show! Having attended both shows last week, and then stayed on for the disco, we had an excellent time. With this, we are definitely buying tickets for their New Years Eve Extravaganza, which will be the place to be in London. It will be guaranteed trash, disco, glamour and nudity!

Briefs: Close Encounters is an encounter I want to experience again and again!
