RESTAURANT REVIEW | Bala Baya, London – A real find!

    ★★★★★| Bala Baya, Southwark, London

A real find in the restaurant scene is Bala Baya. It’s a real find because it’s tucked away in a spot hard to find and it’s a real find because it’s extremely delicious.

A few minutes walk from Southwark tube station in the revitalised railway arches now chock a block full of restaurants and a couple of small theatres is Bala Baya.

Top-notch Israeli food cooked with care and to perfection is delivered to tables with grace and elegance in a space that is uniquely designed to make everything just perfect.

There are many choices on the menu but the best value is the set menu where you’ll share 7 dishes at £42 per person where each dish is so unlike the others.

The Chickpea Hummus (£7 on the a la carte menu) is an excellent blend of mixed spices, pine nuts (superb and plentiful), pickled chillies (for that extra kick), with tomato pulp, and served with two fluffy and very soft pitas. Just superb overall. The Mackerel & Harissa (£13), a dish I would normally never order, was an unexpected delight thanks to the combination of the Sharon Fruit (variety of persimmon), mustard cress and tomatoes which gave the dish a nice zing! While the mackerel was, of course, very fishy, the non-fish portion of the dish pushed it over the edge into delicious category. But what was more than delicious was the Wild Tomatoes dish. Very large (£10) and with each ingredient superb, it consisted of Mooli (white root), pickled red onions, Manouri cheese (similar to feta but cooked and better-tasting), and coriander with blackberry vinaigrette to top it off. Superb, zingy, and beautifully presented, with all the ingredients a great mix. It’s a dish I could eat every night! The Cauliflower & Roe (£13), while not as fabulous as the Wild Tomatoes (it’s hard to beat), consisted of a large cooked cauliflower with harissa, sweetcorn black pepper and cured fish roe on top of acidic vinegar, which, along with the harissa, gave the cauliflower a minor kick but it was an excellent texture. Next up was the Crispy, Sticky and Crunchy dish (£11) of chicken thighs – and all four pieces were of the name, with bitter orange, harissa, kimchi, butternut squash puree, hazelnuts sprinkled on top, and sumac.

While the Kimchi was too spicy, the combination of the rest of the ingredients gave this dish the perfect taste. But what was to come after just topped everything: the Cheeky. It was Ox cheek (a nice round portion, and slow-cooked for 3 hours we were told), with a large aubergine resting comfortably on top, and plum tomatoes alongside with the entire dish swimming in beef and date jus. And if this sounds mouth-watering it’s because it was! A dark brown dish, with the plum tomatoes giving it colour, it was large enough for us to share, but to be honest I wanted more of this dish even though I was getting full! Superb. It’s £18 on the a la cart menu by the way.

Too full is an oxymoron when you know there is dessert still to come. And we had two from the menu: the Burnt Babka and the Malibu Malabi. And if they both sound delectable it’s because they were! The Babka (dough baked into a golden brioche-like bread with added chocolate and hazelnuts and plums) reminded me of a cinnamon bun but with much more flavour. I absolutely loved this dish – and it was up to standard with the mains we had just devoured! The Malabi was coconut, orange blossom, mango, citrus fruit, sumac and rose all compacted into a glass dish.

My dining companion loved it but I was very happy with my Babka! Both desserts are also on the a la carte menu (£9 and £8 respectively).

As mentioned previously, the tasting menus are a bit better value than the a la carte menu. The other tasting menu is £53 per person – you get one more dish but this menu does not include the Cheeky nor the Wild Tomatoes dishes – which were two of my favorites.

As for drinks, it’s a given that Bala Baya has a drink for everyone. Cocktails are fine, with the Flying Camel a standout (Ketel One, Cointreau, grapefruit, sumas and rose), but I need to go back and try the Champagne Martini (yummy!), the Pomegranate and Ginger, and (!!) the Peach (with peach liqueur, lemon and prosecco). The wines are a good value, at two pages you have your pick of white, rose and reds, but as Bala Baya is an Israeli restaurant, your best bet is to jump in with both feet and go for the Israeli wine.

Chef Eran Tibi, a descendant from a Middle Eastern family, successfully brings his family’s cuisine to London. Trained at Le Cordon Bleu and the kitchens of Ottolenghi, the Roundhouse’s Made in Camden kitchen and founding Executive Chef at Zest@JW3, Eran’s passion and creativity are apparent in every one of his dishes.

It’s a slick, cool two-story restaurant with the downstairs in full view of the open kitchen but it’s upstairs where you want to sit. With an overhang of plants in the back, to the high ceilings and the floor to ceiling windows at the front, it’s a very comfortable environment where the tables are not too close to each other. And it’s under the concept of Desert Bauhaus, with interiors designed by the award-winning architect Afroditi Krassa. The wait staff are superb, attentive and very nice, and there is nothing bad to say about this place. It’s just perfect, like a lazy Saturday afternoon on a Tel Aviv Beach.

  • Netflix cancels AJ and The Queen

Netflix cancels AJ and The Queen

It seems as though the numbers didn’t quite add up for the streaming giant Netflix as it looks to cancel a number of shows, one of which includes the RuPaul comedy, AJ and The Queen.

It’s also putting an end to Atypical and Insatiable, both include quite a considerable amount of LGBT+ representation.

Netflix has canned AJ and The Queen just two months after it premiered and RuPaul herself commented on the slay, tweeting

“Thank you for all the love & support. We’re so very proud of the work,”

    AJ AND THE QUEEN

Of course, as it’s Netflix, no official numbers are stated, so we don’t know how well the show actually did on the platform, but clearly not as good as RuPaul’s other venture, you might know it: RuPaul’s Drag Race

Anyway, the show is still available to stream and you can read all our reviews here.

  • This drag queen just reminded us all why Prides need to be more inclusive of disabled people

This drag queen just reminded us all why Prides need to be more inclusive of disabled people

    (C) THEGAYUK

Credit where credit is due and we can all agree that in the last decade prides across the UK have become a lot more diverse and inclusive, but as one drag queen pointed out, you’ll probably not see much representation when it comes to disability.

Sassi Afrika is a drag queen living with cerebral palsy, and she’s determined not to let it define her, but as a Tweet she wrote recently pointed out, you’re probably unlikely to find her (or other performers who are disabled) performing her act at any other pride aside from Warwickshire Pride, because as she says, “LGBT+ people with disabilities get overlooked”.

Yesterday Sassi took to Twitter to write,

“Coming to a Pride near you… Oh hang on, maybe not because LGBT+ people with disabilities get overlooked in favour of crowd pleasers and acts that aren’t even LGBT+. I’ll keep talking about this. Because this is life.”

    https://twitter.com/SassiAfrika/status/1236683472338587648

Daniel Browne, the chair of Warwickshire Pride, a pride which has championed local acts and at least 75% LGBT+ representation on its stage wrote,

“Sassi deserves more respect. And some Prides need to be more representative of the whole LGBT+ community. Less cishet (cis-gendered and hetrosexual) acts. More LGBT+ artists and diversity within that. And stop charging an entry fee.

“An inclusive Pride should be a free Pride.”

    Sassi later added,

“Gurrl I know I’ve been having a moan. But sometimes I gotta keep it real and say it how it is. We should all be more like that. Never put up with shit. Be you and speak the truth. Now, aren’t I looking gorgeous today.”

  • Thierry Alexandre is about to do a non-binary/pansexual/queer night and we’re all in

CRÈME ANGLAISE – THE CREAM OF NON-BINARY BRITAIN!

    -By-

    Sasha de Suinn

Never heard of Thierry Alexandre? Don’t worry, sweethearts – you will! Arguably the uncrowned uber-queen of transhuman London, Thierry gorgeously violates every appreciative orifice wholesale!

Best loosely described as a stormingly pansexual performance artist, Thierry’s triumphantly usurped the f*ck-everything gospel of Leigh Bowery and protégé Transformer, and run with as if his dick’s been sheathed with queer, sacramental fire at the head of a non-binary marathon!

His closest rival, perhaps – if only in sartorial terms – is RuPaul’s latest darling, US drag diva Sasha Velour, but Thierry easily trumps Velour with an infectious lust for life that’s the pansexual pandemic that this dreary, strait-jacketed Brexit Britain is subconsciously screaming for!

And in a sense, Thierry – originally French, though thoroughly queerly baked in England – epitomises the French, national credo of liberty, equality and fraternity. Like some gender-f*cked jump-start cable, Thierry’s ultra-feisty sparks od deviant electricity have kick-started centres of queer civil resistance worldwide.

Drawing on and gaily re-imagining a huge array of disparate, quintessentially contentious sources – among them, clown, Commedia del’ Arte pantomime and – in a linkage that’s game-changingly unlikely – Paul Ruben’s Pee-Wee Herman – Thierry seals his unholy, provocative, queer witch’s brew with the steely, unflinching aesthetic of his adored Butoh dance form.

And briefly, it’s that audacious, impossible-on-paper marriage – fusing child-like innocence, openness and graciousness with the serene but unbending clarity that informs every gesture of Butoh, that ancient, Japanese performing art – that makes Thierry such a unique, irrepressible and fizzing presence in gay London’s crucial, inner circle of bohemians.

So, does he have one talent in particular towering above his poetic, avant-garde dance and kaleidoscopic, sartorial gifts? Certainly, and it’s perhaps one that Thierry himself has overlooked – master facilitator. Arguably, no other non-binary individual in town has energised so many delightful, cutting-edge events with such non-stop, bubbling ebullience, the giddy enthusiasm of a marvellously adult child still in touch with his primal, contagious innocence.

Intrigued? Of course you are, so – without further ado – please feast your eyes, desires and imaginations on Thierry’s self- written manifesto below! Au Revoir,

    Lady Sasha XXX

H from steps just bared his bum and his fans can’t cope

    Ⓒ ITV Plc

Steps superstar “H” has uploaded a rather cheeky photo and fans are loving the sight.

The singer – turned ice-skating sensation took to Twitter to show off his rather pert ass…ets and fans were quick to show their appreciation.

Ian made history this year by becoming part of the first same-sex couple to take part on ITV’s hit show Dancing On Ice.

The dad of two, wrote yesterday morning on Twitter, “MORNING!! I’m feeling cheeky!”

    https://twitter.com/Ianhwatkins/status/1236605089558794240

Before reminding his fans that the last show of Dancing On Ice was due to air that evening.

It wasn’t long before the love with his fanbase started with the well-know Twitter celeb, Auntie Pegg, claiming that Ian was a “saucy bugger” even the social team at London’s Vauxhall Tavern chimed in with “Have a blast, dear”

However, one fan summed it all up perfectly saying “You have a great butt” we couldn’t agree more.

Meanwhile, The Sun, wrote a similar story and managed to get at least two facts wrong. In their story, the journalist wrongly asserted that Ian was standing in a sunbed. With just a quick glance you can see Ian is standing next to a shower and secondly, they stated that he tweeted “late last night” checking the timestamp on the tweet shows that the Tweet was sent at 10:50 AM.

  • CAR REVIEW | Audi A1 Citycarver 30 TFSI 116PS S tronic

    CAR REVIEW | Audi A1 Citycarver 30 TFSI 116PS S tronic

    Driving Out Of The City

Audi has just revamped their little A1 for the city giving it the “Citycarver” moniker. It sits high up in the A1 range and therefore towers above the Sportback model in the range in more ways than one.

What we have here is an Audi A1 that has been lifted a huge 50mm. That’s 2 inches in old money. It’s also dressed up with some black wheel arch extensions like those from Audi’s Q range but this is no SUV.

It’s still Audi’s little hatchback car.

For a start, the raise in rode height should, in theory, make for a lofty wallowing ride when compared to the Sportback that we at THEGAYUK liked very much. In some degree, it does but not in a notably loose way that you would expect. It’s rather less Germanic in comfort terms and it seems to be a trend I’m noticing from the ‘normal’ cars from Ingolstadt. The ride remains faithful to the A1 Sportback in being entertaining on A and B roads while also being just that much softer while retaining a semblance of body control.

This floaty Audi was fitted with the engaging 999cc TFSI 3 cylinder petrol unit mated to a sort of hydraulic dry clutch gearbox. In essence, it’s an automatic with 3 drive modes. Auto, wheel paddles or selected on the gearstick in S mode. All three work well though on the stick shift it always feels wrong when knocking back goes up the gearbox. Many do it the other way around and that feels more natural. This gearbox has come in for some harsh criticisms for its lack of go-go-go when you floor it from a stand-still and I’m happy to report that the hesitation now almost link to this system was well muted. It felt better suited to the city fight for space when pulling out of a side road quickly.

It doesn’t try to be hot hatch despite its identical credentials of the other A1 in the range and it makes for the better car. However, it doesn’t all go its own way. For a start, as a car named for the city, it lacks protection. The city can be a brutal thing. Remember all the trouble Carrie and the girls had trying to navigate their way around Manhattan? It’s like that for the A1 Citycarver. It looks great but those looks won’t last long. The absence of door rubbing strips is noticeable. There isn’t even an option for them. It goes a little way in the fitment of black wheel arch extensions but these are hardly the things to preserve the flanks of the doors in a carpark.

And then there is the interior. It’s just a bit business like inside. You can’t fault the ergonomics and driver comfort but the colours are more suited to a boardroom meeting with a packet of rich tea as the only available snack. Perhaps it was the £575 optional python yellow metallic paint that exaggerated this. The colour was bold and memorable and made a statement wherever it was parked. But the grey inside with the below par for Audi, silver trim across the dashboard just doesn’t cut it, well certainly not in a car that costs just under £23 grand before options.

It redeems itself inside with Audi’s 10.25 inch digitally adaptable facia display and 8.8-inch infotainment screen. This is thankfully angled towards the driver. The interface is easy to navigate around and responds to fingering inputs quickly. Annoyingly the lane keep assist system will always reset after you switch off. Its aggressive tugging can be quickly turned off from the end of the wiper stalk.

Despite my criticisms, it is a rather nice package let down perhaps by Audi being at the business end of the global company it comes from.

A smattering of bright colour dotted around wouldn’t go amiss inside. That said, it’s the engaging enthusiasm the chassis affords you when you get out of the city. Kick-off those high heels and slip into those comfy trainers and your A1 becomes a Carver, cutting up the badly maintained back roads of England with aplomb and this time you’re allowed to keep the ESP off all the time!

It’s just that I wouldn’t want to take it back into the big city without those door rubbing strips. They might be unfashionable but it’s cruel out there!

  • Where is the best nudist beach for gay guys in Europe?

Where is the best nudist beach for gay guys in Europe?

    We can’t wait for summer.

Yes, there are a number of great nudist beaches in the UK, but apparently, if you want to go to the best in Europe you’ll have to travel further afield.

According to Globehunters the best nudist beach for gay friendliness is actually the incredible liberal country of Sweden.

The travel experts point out that Agesta Beach in Sweden is the “best beach destination for the LGBT+ community” and it gives the country a magnificent 322 points on its LGBTQ+ Danger Index.

Globehunter’s LGBT+ Danger Index score was taken from Asher & Lyric’s index of the safest and least safe countries for gay, bi, lesbian and trans travellers, with the highest scores indicating a safer country.

    Chilly willy?

However, if you’re planning to head to Sweden’s premier nudist beach you might want to actually keep some clothes on as the Average summer temperature is just 15.7 degrees – that’s way to chilling for us to get our kit off.

Actually, while you’re at it, have a read of our Editor’s one and only experience of a nudist beach here.

For the best warmth, you’d have to travel transatlantic to either Austin, Texas’s Hippie Hollow or Jamaica’s Ocho Rios. However, Jamaica receives a dismal -98 points on the LGBT+ danger index according to Globehunters.

    And for the UK?

    wilhei / Pixabay

The best nudist beach for the gay community in the UK is Brighton’s Naturist Beach – which has an average summer temperature just marginally better than Sweden – at 16.3 degrees.

  • Grindr is looking for a new buyer and the price tag is hefty

Grindr is looking for a new buyer and the price tag is hefty

    CREDIT: Ryazan / BIGSTOCK

The world’s busiest gay hook up app, Grindr, is about to sell up and the asking price is a lot.

Reuters is reporting that the current owners of Grindr, Beijing Kunlun Tech will be selling off the app immediately and the price tag is reported to be around $600 million.

That’s quite the mark up over what it paid for the app just a few short years ago.

In 2018 a majority stake in the world’s most popular gay hookup app was sold to the Chinese gaming firm in a deal that was worth nearly $100 million.

The tech company is selling up because the Committee on Foreign Investment (CFIUS) the United States, ordered the company to sell off a majority stake in the company in 2019.

The CFIUS ruled that the treasure trove of data held by Grindr would be a concern for the national security of the United States so it effectively forced the sale of the company. The ruling from the Committee on Foreign Investment also ordered that the firm cannot share any data harvested from the app.

The ID of the buyer is said to be San Vicente Acquisition LLC who will have a mound of data on around 4.5 million users.

According to Reuters, the CFIUS will need to approve the latest deal.

  • DILEMMA | I’m concerned about coronavirus, should I stop hooking up?

DILEMMA | I’m concerned about coronavirus, should I stop hooking up?

A reader asks whether he should stop hooking up with guys from dating apps, during the coronavirus outbreak.

    Dear Uncle,

I’m really concerned about the spread of coronavirus and wondering whether hooking up with random guys off grindr is safe.

    What do you suggest?

    Matthew

This article has been updated read the new response here.

    Dear Matthew,

You ask a good question and one that could be applied to any number of viruses or infections that we face every time we make the decision to hook up with someone random off an app.

Every time we decide to hook up with someone we haven’t received an entire up-to-date health scan from (read: basically every time) you are at some risk, but overall we make the call that the risk is worth the play.

So should Coronavirus be any different?

    An agent for change?

    CREDIT: ©-Vadymvdrobot-Depositphotos

I think coronavirus could be a good engine for change or adaptation for our community. It might invite us to start talking more openly about our sexual health, testing and well-being in general and there’s no harm in having a conversation with someone about their health before you hook up.

The more we talk about these things, hopefully, the less stigma there is attached to our health.

    Is coronavirus overhyped?

Despite the massive media attention given to coronavirus, it’s worth acknowledging that every year the human race battles flu, colds and other infections. The LA Times notes that this flu season alone 32 million Americans were infected with influenza, which resulted in 18,000 deaths.

But with that said, it would be prudent to take some precautions.

You could ask the person you’re planning to meet with whether they’re likely to have come into contact with the virus – i.e. have they travelled from one of the places hardest hit with the virus – like China, Iran, Italy or South Korea.

However, given that the incubation period for this virus is assumed to be around two weeks, even someone who isn’t showing any symptoms may actually be carrying the virus.

Be wary of your own heath – do you have underlying health conditions that could lead to complications should you become infected with the coronavirus.

Keep the NHS website in your bookmarks for updates from the medical professionals and make your decisions based on their advice.

Matthew, in the end, it’s up to you. I wouldn’t stop having fun at this stage, but I’d urge you and others to self isolate if you think you’ve started to get symptoms and not just with Corona – don’t hook up with guys if you’ve got a cold, flu or if you’re in treatment for an STI.

    Let’s not spread infections around.

We’re a community that needs to protect each other.

While I’m at it, why not go for a sexual health check-up – ask about PrEP, the HPV and Hepatitis vaccines.
