“Letâs admit right now that we
hate each other as a community”
Taking to Facebook Lady Bunny said,
âLetâs cancel gay pride! Instead, letâs just fight over the f**king flag this year! Letâs fight over the correct terms for everybody. Letâs dismiss everyone who doesnât want to transition as a privileged cisgender. Letâs spar over the name of our own damn communityâis it gay, LGBT, LGBTQ, LGBTQIA or did we bring back two spirits yet? I also saw a Y in there recently and have no idea what that even is.
Letâs admit right now that we hate each other as a community, and that weâre too ungrateful to celebrate the freedoms which we do have once a year. Letâs compartmentalize ourselves into bears, twinks, butches, femmes, trans, tops, bottoms and those who claim they have no gender to further divide an already small community which does not have rights to equal housing and employment. And weâre even barred from using the bathrooms of their choice in some states!
“Letâs boil it down to the tiniest arguments
which will mean nothing in six months or even six days.”
Thatâs a surefire way to make sure weâll never get equal rights. Letâs boil it down to the tiniest arguments which will mean nothing in six months or even six days. If we took the energy and vitriol we reserved to pounce on one flag variation in one city and turned it on those who seek to destroy our rights, weâd be running the world tomorrow and weâd all have gorgeous new hairstyles to boot.
And in our supreme jadedness of which I am also guilty, letâs try and remember that there are young members of our own tribe who have gotten nothing but soul-destroying messages from their schoolmates, their churches, and even from their families. Do they need our help? They need to see large groups of their own tribe in a festive environment so that they donât feel so alone. They need to see happy and proud gay, lesbian, transsexual and every color of the rainbow folk actually liking and supporting each other.
Or would youth even want to join this community if they saw the way weâve been acting lately?â

âThereâs no point in denying that working with the DUP makes me personally uncomfortable,â said James Sean Dickson, a British-Irish dual citizen and Conservative Party Member. Dickson, however, has not resigned his membership and is a tad more optimistic about any deal struck between his party and the DUP. âIt is quite clear that LGBT+ rights are not up for negotiation.â Former Conservative MP Ben Howlett â who lost his seat at the General Election â also made it clear that any deal needed to draw a hard line between the Tories and the DUP. âThe message needs to be loud and clear that there will be no backtracking on LGBT issues in the UK.â He expressed an optimism that the deal could, in fact, give the government some leverage in pushing for further LGBT rights advances in the province. âI think this is a good opportunity for the UK government to negotiate a better deal for LGBT rights in Northern Ireland,â he said. âIt is an opportunity the government should not pass up.â
Chris Taylor, a party member since 1995 who served as a London Councillor from 2002 â 2014, was more unconcerned than some of his fellow party members. Taylor, who describes himself as âideologically centrist,â says he feels, âcompletely comfortable in regards to any deal with the DUP.â âIt is important to remember that although I do not share the social beliefs of the DUP, they are the democratically elected majority party of Northern Ireland, and were seen as perfectly legitimate prospective partners for the Labour Party back in 2010.â He pointed to Labour leader Jeremy Corbynâs own support for Sinn Fien, the nationalist republican party in Northern Ireland, as well as Corbynâs support for what he calls âsome Islamic fundamentalist groups that advocate death to gaysâ as evidence of the hypocrisy around the deal.
Dickson expressed a similar feeling on the perceived hypocrisy, saying that, âif Labour Party members are displeased by this election outcome they ought to ask themselves whether their leader should have utilised Press TV (the Iranian state-owned news channel) to air his views in the past, given the troubling Iranian LGBT* rights record.â Cautioning that, âwe must not allow ourselves to be taken in by a bogeyman caricatures of the DUP,â Dickson told me that the party âis no longer the fire and brimstone expressionâ it once was.
Still, the partyâs record has many people nervous about what this means for the Tory brand and for LGBT rights. I reached out to LGBT+ Conservatives for comment, but they instead referred me to a HuffPost UK blog by their chairman, Matthew Green. (In the interest of disclosure, the author of this piece is also a HuffPost UK blogger.) Â âLet me be clear from the outset,â Green wrote, âthe DUP and some of its MLAs hold some pretty appalling views on LGBT rights.â However, he adds the caveat that âgiven the need for stability ahead of the Brexit negotiations,â he â and it is assumed LGBT+ Conservatives, endorse a âloose co-operationâ with the DUP âto ensure that Britain is able to get the right deal as it prepares to leave the European Union.â
Brexit was brought up by the individuals I spoke with, as well. âEven if [the DUP] wanted to, which they donât, there is no time available to change equalities legislation given the timescale of Brexit,â Ben Howlett assured me. Chris Taylor agreed, saying that âwe need to move forward, in a stable manner, [to] deliver a successful BrexitâŠâ And James Sean Dickson also stressed that âwith⊠days until Brexit negotiations begin, working with the DUP is the surest way to secure stability.â
Not everyone within the party agrees, though. James Wharton, the openly gay ex-soldier and author of Out in the Army, resigned his membership from the Conservative Party last week. âIâve left on a point of principle,â he told me. âI canât happily continue to spend money on my membership and willingly support the party when it spends that support on partnerships with political organisations who make peopleâs lives less enjoyable than they might otherwise possibly be.â
In a statement posted on Twitter and sent to his local Conservative Association, Wharton stated that, âas an active LGBT activist, proud of the direction our party has taken since 2010 where LGBT rights are concerned, Iâm upset to see Theresa May establish this arrangement with an organisation so vehemently against gay and trans equality.â
He accused Mrs May of âthrowing thousands of LGBT party members under the bus.â âHow am I supposed to convince gay and lesbian friends of mine to support a party so in-bed with homophobia, intolerance, and discrimination? The answer is, of course, that I cannot,â he adds.

The perfect antidote to election fatigue is coming to a town near you. Miss Hope Springs the former international Las Vegas showgirl is currently touring the UK with her new show The Devil Made Me Do It. Illuminating the stage with sequins and bringing a ray of rainbow sunshine, Miss Hope Springs has a black humour and intricacy of lyrics which will resonate with anyone who has clawed their way to the top and chipped every manicured nail on the way back down.
More than drag, Hope Springs is a composer, lyricist and comedy cabaret act, with a performance harking back to the good old days of variety shows. A civilised evening of intelligent entertainment, witty, comedic and heartfelt songs, Miss Hope Springs will treat you to belly laughs and teary eyes in equal entertaining measure.
A five-star evening out for anyone looking for a break from the norm.
Shuggie Hughes delves deep into Miss Hope Springs Below:
I think every woman should, at least once in her life, try getting in touch with her deepest inner parts. If, like me, your husband wonât help out then get a professional in to help. Itâs good to blow away those cobwebs. My husband Irving said Iâm a born psychologist, or is it psychopath? Well I know itâs something to do with the mind.
I always have a thing for men with that understated masculine energy. Like Noel CowardâŠand your Julian Clary. He really does something for me! Liberace was just adorable. His subtle sense of style…A little on the macho side for my tasteâŠbut still.
Youâll have to come and find out for yourself at one of my shows darling. The Devil Made Me Do It is a tell-all musical romp down my own personal memory lane through my original songs and revealing stories from my Ritz to the pits life. And trust meâŠitâs not always a pretty sight!
‘Theyâll never buy the cow if they can get the milk for free’. I donât know what it means âŠbut I like the sound of it. My grandmother Elke Seltzer used to say it to me all the time when I was a little girl growing up in Paradise, Nevada (a trailer park) just outside Las Vegas. She was a stripâŠI mean exotic dancer.
Well as you know I am a composer and lyricist and my tastes are pretty broad. My influences go from Cole Porter and George Gershwin to bands that are totally ‘down-with-the-kids’ such as The Beatles and The Carpenters. No one can say I havenât kept up with the times.
Itâs a heavy torch to carry sometimes. Especially when youâre doing a quick dash round Lidyl in sequinned kaftan, huge sunglasses and matching turban-kitten heels combo, you know…when you just want to be incognito. People keep staring at me and pointing, often shouting things like âThere she goes…I saw her she shove half a dozen of them down her Spanx.â You get used to the attention though. I think itâs rather sweet. I donât know where Iâd be without my fans…
Funnily enough. A bucketâŠCan I have a spade and a plastic crab too? Oh and one of those little flags? Seriously though. I plan to win a Daytime Emmy, an Oscar and the Nobel Peace Prize.
Vaseline, a macrame plant holder and a crate of Cif.
‘Carlos! Open the Sauvignon Blanc and it better be chilled to perfection or else.’ (Carlos is my husbandâs delightful hairdresser pal. We all share a camper van in Dungeness. When Irving told me he was getting a little camper I was like âI donât think thatâs possible!’
To start lying about my age sooner. Once I started it was too late to go backwards. Iâve been 39 for 30 years now and I think it might be wearing a bit thin. ListenâŠIâm no angelâŠbut I get byâŠand one word of advice for those of you who may find yourself in any kind of troubleâŠjust say Hope told you to say The Devil Made Me Do It!

Okay, it’s only for television but it totally makes our day.Check out this first look promo from e4.
Speaking about working with Duncan, Adam said in a recent interview,
“Itâs been funny – Iâve known Duncan for years. When I first got the part and they mentioned that Kyle would be gay, I was like, âOh, thatâs fine as long as itâs not with Duncan…â because he was such a good mate. They were like, âErm⊠well it is with Duncanâ. [laughs] In some respect, you think itâs going to be really awkward because Iâd known him for so long, but then at the same time it was really good because heâs such a nice guy and we are good mates! So, my first ever boy-on-boy kiss was with Duncan from Blue! Thatâs definitely a benchmark! [laughs]”

Justin Trudeau entered into power as Canada’s 23rd Prime Minister in November 2015. Since his time in power he has been at the forefront of LGBT+ equality in Canada has been a clear advocate for the LGBT+ community.
He made history by walking in Vancouver Pride, the first Canadian Prime Minister to do so. He issued a sweeping apology for historic gay convictions and his Government is also considering gender neutral ID card for its citizens. In March 2016 Canada became the third country in the world to approve the anti-HIV drug, PrEP, for use in the communities which need it the most.
In 2016 the pride flag was flown for the first time from Parliament Hill.
During his premiership, a vote took place on the gender bias of Canada’s national. A bill passed by 225 votes to 74 to change lyrics of the anthem.  The line âTrue patriot love in all thy sons command”, will be scrapped and replaced with, âTrue patriot love in all of us commandâ.
As a side, he’s also been voted the world’s sexiest Prime Minister!
HAPPY COUPLE: Justin Trudeau picture with his wife. They have been married since 2005 and have three children together.
Justin Trudeau does not identify as gay and is married to a woman called Sophie Grégoire. They married in 2005 and have three children together, Xavier James (born October 18, 2007), Ella-Grace Margaret (born February 5, 2009) and Hadrien Grégoire (born February 28, 2014).

To our knowledge, there have not been any openly bisexual or transgender leaders. There have been five openly gay and lesbian leaders.
Iceland was the first country in Europe to elect an openly lesbian leader with JĂłhanna SigurdardĂłttir, she served from the 1st of February 2009 until the 23rd May 2013. She was part of the Social Democratic Alliance in Iceland. She is married to JĂłnĂna LeĂłsdĂłttir. They have been together since 2002.
Belgium elected Elio Di Rupo was Prime Minster from the 6th December 2011 until October 2014. Di Rupo came out as gay in 1996, during a press pack conference in which he was asked if he was gay, he responded, “Yes. So what?” He is the first openly gay man to lead a sovereign state, and the first openly gay man to win the position in his own right pursuant to an election
Luxembourg was the next country to elect an openly gay man with Xavier Bettel being elected on 2nd December 2013. He is still in power.
On the 13th June Ireland made Leo Varadkar Prime Minister. He is the youngest Prime Minster of Ireland.
On the 15th June, Serbia got its first lesbian and female Prime Minister, Ana BrnabiÄ. MsBrnabiÄ is a 41-year-old graduate of the University of Hull.

It takes a brave man to put your first date with another guy on television – especially when it doesn’t quite pan out how you imagine it would.
First Dates recently broadcast this clanger between John and Greig. However after John came back from a smoke outside he admitted to Greig, âIt sounds really bad, but I donât find you attractive,â
âYouâre a really genuine guy and we seem to get on, but I just donât have that connection with you.â
âWhatâs the point in staying and having the main course and dinners?â
Ouch.
Even the waiter felt the burn.

Clearly taken aback Greig cancelled his main course and left the restaurant, leaving John to finish his steak and chips alone.

Serbia has just got an openly lesbian Prime Minister in a duo of firsts.
President Aleksandar VuÄiÄ announced the appointment of Ana BrnabiÄ today, the second openly lesbian head of Government and the fifth openly gay head of government in the world. She is also Serbia’s first female Prime Minister.
MsBrnabiÄ is a 41-year-old graduate of the University of Hull. The news comes hot on the tails of Ireland’s brand new Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar.

Serbia has a relatively poor history on gay right’s matters, having only legalised same-sex sexual activity in 1994. The country does not have any recognitions for same-sex partners and gay marriage is constitutionally banned.
