  • X Factor is back and with the worst ratings since 2004

Oh dear, Simon Cowell won’t be happy!

    x factor ratings are down

X Factor is back and apparently has suffered the worst launch ratings since 2004 with an average of 6 million people tuning in, according to Digital Spy.

The 14th series launched on Saturday with judges, Louis Walsh, Sharon Osborne, Nicole Scherzinger and Simon, a usually winning combination, but it failed to get the numbers in – with the show’s audience rivalling that of the 2004 launch. Last year’s launch had 6.8 million people watching.

Those ratings are expected to rise after all catch up streams are accounted for.

But it must be a worry for ITV bosses as the BBC’s rival, Strictly Come Dancing hasn’t even started yet!

It’s a far cry from the near 11 million people who would tune in during the show’s peak and, we’re sure,  it won’t be long before people are calling for the show’s axe.

  • Journalist Dean Eastmond passes away aged just 21

Dean Eastmond, who created the HISKIND magazine has passed away aged just 21.

Dean, who had become a bit of a social media legend because of his epic and brave battle against cancer, has sadly passed away at the age of 21. He had been sharing his journey on Twitter – receiving hundreds of messages of support from fans and celebs alike.

Dean was diagnosed with cancer last year at the age of 20 when he was studying at University. He had been suffering from Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone and soft tissue cancer. Twelve months on and his valiant efforts to keep upbeat during his many treatments made him a social star.

During his treatment, Dean created the HISKIND magazine, to bring attention to the stigma and discrimination that many LGBT+ people face when diagnosed with cancer.

In July, Dean, got the surprise of his life when a video message was broadcast in front of thousands in Trafalgar Square at Pride In London.

Speaking about discovering he was living with cancer he wrote for the Guardian,

“In mid-Jun, I was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma – a rare soft tissue cancer growing off my ninth rib. I first noticed a problem after my housemates and I decided to have a party to celebrate making it through our first term of uni. The morning afterwards, I felt an excruciating pain in my side. I took a couple of paracetamol and shrugged it off as a drunken bump from the night before, but when I noticed a prominent protrusion of a rib a few months later, I knew something was clearly not right. Within a few weeks, my life went from normal to a series of scans, tests and biopsies, leading to a swift diagnosis”.

The news of his death has shocked many in the LGBT+ community, with stars and fans of Dean’s work, paying tribute to the writer.

  • COMMENT | We need to stop saying “I already knew” when someone comes out

We Should Applaud Those Brave Enough to Come Out, Not Tear Them Down…

Seeing the trolls was obviously disappointing, but not surprising.

Discovering that many of the trolls were other gay people was even more disappointing…

With the news that Olympic athlete Colin Jackson has come out as gay, I logged on to Twitter to see what people were saying about it. Although there were some congratulatory tweets and well wishes, the majority of the comments I saw were putting Jackson down and criticising him for only coming out now, having spent years denying his sexuality.

Seeing the trolls was obviously disappointing, but not surprising. Discovering that many of the trolls were other gay people was even more disappointing, but again not surprising at all. That’s because we live in a world where trolls regularly tear people down online. These days I’m more surprised when someone is nice.

It’s not just Colin Jackson who has been in the firing line recently. You only have to look at Aaron Carter’s coming out to see an example of people saying hateful things instead of being more understanding and supportive. The same can be said of Barry Manilow’s coming out earlier this year.

I think the thing that disappoints me most about all the negativity that gay people write about famous people coming out is when they say that they already knew, or it was hardly a secret, or even that they are coming out for publicity. Maybe, just maybe, it’s actually because they now feel comfortable enough to come out. It’s easy to see how difficult it must be for them, given the reactions of other gay people when these famous folks do pluck up the courage to be open about who they are.

Much of the issue that people are taking with Colin Jackson coming out is that he has denied being gay in the past. That may be true, but that shouldn’t detract from the fact that he now feels able to be open about who he is. I’m guilty of denying my own sexuality in the past due to fear of being rejected and attacked for being gay. I have no doubt that countless other people have also hidden or denied their sexuality for the same reasons.

The common theme among the trolls tweeting about Aaron Carter was the opinion that he is probably gay and just saying he is bisexual to soften the blow.

In Aaron Carter’s case, the stigma around being bisexual is huge. The common theme among the trolls tweeting about Aaron Carter was the opinion that he is probably gay and just saying he is bisexual to soften the blow. Others were saying that he is coming out as bisexual to resurrect his career. It’s this kind of biphobia that keeps bisexual people in the closet. That stigma attached to being bisexual is the reason why there is such a lack of bisexual visibility, although the fantastic Bi Pride UK team are about to change that. As the Stonewall saying goes, some people are bisexual… get over it!

What’s clear to me is that because someone is famous, they are somehow fair game when it comes to mocking and judging them when they come out. However, we need to be mindful that those famous people are human too. They are just like the rest of us and go through the same struggles as we do. We all have our own journey and so do they.

What I’d like to do is call for more kindness. I applaud Colin Jackson, Aaron Carter, Barry Manilow and anyone else who feels brave enough to come out and be who they are. I just wish other gay people would be more supportive of that. With LGBT+ people facing so much hatred in many countries around the world, we should all be sticking together. This infighting and putting each other down does a disservice to those who fought and continue to fight, for our rights.

  • FILM REVIEW | Patti Cake$

    ★★★★ | Patti Cake$

    FILM REVIEW | Patti Cake$

Can a white overweight girl from New Jersey become a rap star? You bet – and her name is “Patti Cake$”.

Danielle Macdonald plays Patricia Dombrowski, an unemployed 23-year-old who has been given the nickname ‘dumbo’ by her contemporaries.

There’s very little opportunity for her; she’s been fired from her most recent job, her mum is an alcoholic, her grandmother is confined to a wheelchair, and she’s a dreamer about hitting the big time. But when she gets together with her friends, including pharmacist Jheri (Siddarth Dhananjay), she’s no longer just plain Patricia, she’s Patti Cake$.

When an opportunity arises for them to enter a rap contest, Patti has doubts, not only because the competition will be fierce, but also because she lacks the confidence which she never got from her own mother (Bridget Everett), who is always trying to show her up. But where there’s a will there’s a way, and Patti and her gang (now called PBNJ) must prove that they’ve got what it takes. And this makes Patti Cake$ a sweet and engrossing tale of a misfit girl who can and will make it.

Australian Danielle Macdonald is superb as Patti Cake$. She nails it as the rough around the edges but very soft to the core Patti who will have the audience in her corner. Everett also has a showy role as Patti’s mother, always trying to look good for potential male suitors. New Jersey native and music video director Geremy Jasper showcases the real New Jersey in this film and brings us a sweet tale of a girl who has larger than life dreams and tries to make them happen.

  • This is why you should DEFINITELY NOT use the kettle in your hotel room

You might want to think again before downing a cup of packeted Nescafe…

So apparently some totally gross people are using their hotel room’s kettle to boil their underwear. I mean WTF people.

    I mean WTF people.

Now you might assume that boiling water kills off bacteria – but apparently, not all microbes and bacterium are killed off by simply boiling water.

A senior lecturer in Molecular Biosciences at Massey University in Aukland, Dr Heather Hendrickson, spoke to Gizmodo to say that indeed, boiling your underwear in a kettle was just not cool.

    She said,

“It is super super super super gross,”

Apparently, some bacteria form spores that are highly immune to temperatures up to 120 Celsius and over a long period of time. Botulism causing Clostridium botulinum spores are a good example of this…

That cheapy hotel kettle just isn’t going to cut it!

    She continued,

“These don’t cause sickness if they are consumed, but their presence in certain environments can encourage them to produce a toxin that can be deadly.”

People… please don’t use your kettle to boil your undies – use the laundry service – that’s what it’s there for.

  • DILEMMA | My husband cheated on me with male sex workers, whilst I was in prison

This week a reader finds out that her husband of 14 years cheated on her with male sex workers, whilst she was in prison. He also bugged her phone and continues to see escorts, even when their two kids are in the house.

    Dear Dr Dannii

I have been with my hubby for 14 years and I know I was his first love.

Recently I was incarcerated and did six months in jail away from my love and he cheated on me with a sex worker, who turned out to be male. We have two children under 10 and I know he’s been bringing in sex workers and drug users into our home whilst the kids are there.

He also has hacked my phone, so he can listen to my conservations, even when I’m not using it. I haven’t cheated on him so I have no idea what to do next.

I feel every time I go out he cheats on me and I don’t want him to pass on any STDs to me. We’ve talk about working this through and he says he’ll change, but I can’t and don’t want to live with a guy who can’t be faithful.

    Sandi,

(Message edited for clarity and length)

    Dear Sandi,

Your message was long and a bit unclear in some parts, but I understood what you were trying to say, and how much you have been through.

Please do not stay in the situation that you are in. You are clearly unhappy and it is obvious that your partner has no consideration for your feelings at all. I am sorry to be so blunt, but this will not change. I believe I understood you have children, if so this can not be a healthy situation for any young people to be in.

Please try and get the necessary help (including any protection you might need!) and build a new life for you and your children and stop waiting for others to change.

Your first stop should be to social services or give Family Lives (0808 800 2222) a call to talk through your problem. It sounds like you need some guidance from people who can help tackle your issues head on. It might be good check out the woman’s website over at Shelter, who have some brilliant advice for women in need of refuge.

The other thing to consider and it all depends on your family and friendship connections – but do you have parents, family or friends you can call on to help you, even if it’s to leave the house with your children for a while and get them out of that toxic environment?

If you are concerned about your sexual health, you should book yourself in with your GP or a sexual health clinic.

You have dealt with so much already, so you are strong enough to make it through.

Have you got a dilemma you’d like to ask our experts?

  • This guy wants to ban the Rainbow flag because it’s offensive to straight people

All those pretty colours are sooooo offensive.

A radio host in the US has called for the ban of the international LGBT symbol, the rainbow flag to be banned because… it’s offensive to people, just like the Confederate flag and argued that you couldn’t ban one – without banning the other.

Bryan Fisher was speaking on American Family Radio about the controversy surrounding the removal of Confederate flags and monuments before launching into a tirade about how offensive the rainbow flag was.

    He said,

“There’s a lot of attention right now to get rid of the Confederate flag. There’s a public school system in North Carolina that’s completely banned the confederate flag because it is divisive.

    “So, no more Confederate flag.

“There’s another symbol that is just as divisive… If we are going to ban the Confederate flag because it is divisive, how about we ban the LGBT flag at school?

“If we are going to ban the Confederate flag at school because it creates division because it is offensive to people, I propose that everywhere the Confederate flag is banned… at the same time the LGBT rainbow flag be banned, at exactly the same time for exactly the same reasons.

“It is offensive, it is contrary to our most deeply held values, it divides people, it does not bring them together.

“It’s time to have the LGBT flag banned right alongside the Confederate flag. If we’re going to ban one, I submit we need to ban the other.”

    So there you have it.
