TV REVIEW | American Horror Story
Horror doesn’t get much more terrifying and much gayer than “American Horror Story”. Last year’s runaway success from FX is now available to buy on DVD and Blu-ray and is the perfect viewing for dark October nights.
Created and produced by the team behind “Glee” this series is slick, sexy and scarier than a right wing homophobe. Ben (played by the hot Dylan McDermott) and his wife Vivien move to a newly restored mansion in Los Angeles with their teenage daughter. Things turn nasty when they realise that their house is a “murder house” where numerous killings have occurred over the years.
Uptight dysfunctional gay ghosts, a rubber gimp suit and a freaky surgically enhanced neighbour (played by Jessica Lange) all add to the tongue in cheek camp horror. This isn’t just kitsch though. It’s a genuinely horrifying experience and is totally immersing. I found myself checking the doors were locked more than once after seeing the first episode.
There are echoes of “Rosemary’s Baby”, classic Hitchcock and the modern slasher movie. It’s also set in a gorgeous house. It’s a real roller-coaster of a series and is compulsive viewing. Buy it now on Amazon if you have a strong nerve:
